( it’s especially painful if you’re on board with the idea that mandark is trans & that’s his deadname. real fucking classy savino. )

;; ‘ a boy named sue, ‘ the reveal OF mandark’s birthname is significantly less irritating but his parents & mandark’s homelife leave SUCH a bad taste in my mouth - which is honestly SUCH a shame, because it’s shoved in our faces for a good handful of mandark’s episodes. I’ll give it credit, it introduced us to the very popular & wonderful transdark idea, but that wasn’t savino’s intent at all - making it that much more... eeeeeh. ‘ mountain mandark ‘ & most other episodes featuring mandark’s parents are unfortunately affected & get a 2/10 from me; I did personally kind of like mandark’s new attitude in the newer seasons but I also recognize it’s VERY distant from the attitude he used to have in the earlier ones, & it definitely does have it’s flaws.

;;THOSE ASIDE, ‘ D2 ‘ I found to be a little stale & OOC - as of typing this, I just watched it for the first time in a long time & I’m indifferent, if not a little salty. the episode revolves around dexter & dee dee getting along & teaming up, but it leads to everything becoming utter chaos until the parents get them fighting again. a pretty pointless episode, in my opinion. & it’s not that I don’t care to see dexter & dee dee getting along, that’s not it at all, but it could have most certainly & HAS been done better ( even canonically! ). ‘ that magic moment ‘ & most ‘ a dad / a mom / a dee dee cartoon ‘ segments were very uninteresting if not downright inconsistent with already established storylines & relationships AND ‘ lab on the run ‘ had a great concept ( robots escaping dexter’s laboratory ) but honestly annoyed & bored me to tears.

;; savino’s laboratory ( that’s what I’m gonna call it now ) has it’s good & bad moments, but these were particularly out of place & are very much my least favorites out of the ENTIRE series.

;; now, these aren’t the best shots - I just needed them for comparison’s sake. cleaner, smoother look aside; the majority of the characters became more shape dependant, with less soft, smooth movement in place for stiff & rigid movement. notice how dexter is more cube-like & mandark has a much more sharp, square body. IT MAKES A LOT MORE SENSE SEEING ANIMATION COMPARISON TOO. designs were also simplified, presumably to make them easier to animate - given they were using flash from cel animation for the reboot ???? I think ??? 

;; styles for backgrounds, background characters & supporting ones are also MUCH different than genndy’s, with less variety in body types, shapes & such. you’ll notice watching rebooted episodes that backgrounds are a lot less detailed than the original season’s; much flatter & depending on patterns more than detail, if that makes sense??? does any of this make sense ???? ANON YOU’VE GOT ME GUSHING AGAIN DAMMIT

;; concerns with modern day reboots aside, dexter’s laboratory was near perfect being made & produced at the time it was, it FEELS like a show that belongs in the 90′s & I feel a lot of it’s humor was perfect for the era it was in. maybe this sounds a little hypocritical coming from a blog that writes for the character as if still in the 90′s, forgive me if so. I’m not sure too many children nowadays would be interested enough to watch as perhaps they used to be, or perhaps I’d be wrong! I have no idea how it’d fare being remade this long after the fact, not just by the audience - but obviously by the producers & if they could keep the same style of the show nowadays, or at the very least keep it likeable. I personally don’t think it NEEDS ‘ rebooting, ‘ per se -- but it would be nice to see the show get a little more recognition now & again, air the show a bit more & let the younger audiences see what came before the shows they know on CN nowadays, you know?

;; as for the justice friends? a comedic, more slice-of-life show about superheroes, while still more fitting for their time in the 90′s - might fare a bit better nowadays? it’s genre & style, though it came from DL, is a lot more eye-catching. kids like superheroes more than scientists, right? now I realize TT/G has somewhat taken the role of ‘ comedic / slice of life ‘ superhero lives, & god forbid they ever manage to treat the justice friends the same way, but maybe if they were to keep the style the segment had in it’s prime, it could have a lot of potential!

The waves of terror shaking his core as he was forced to flee to the tune of the apparent ‘ customer’s ‘ flared dander. The feel of loose cardboard jabbing him in the back, an empty box thrown at his mortified form. Whatever discomfort in his computer chair? Nothing short of relieving after that.

  & a slow day at the corp?   He could laugh forever.

;; suddenly, mandark was the head of the corporation itself after the untimely death of it’s prior leader. suddenly, dexter was no more than a simple worker with no more but a number to his name. suddenly, mandark wanted information dexter couldn’t allow him to have, knowing the man had only ill intent. a continuous downhill slope, as mandark attempted to pry the information out of the fellow genius through various methods of torture. he wasn’t able to get a single word before dexter had had enough, & wiped every single his memories clean out of his head. with no memory of anything, there’s no chance for mandark to get anything he wanted out of him, right?

;; unfortunately, mandark is a persistent man, & he’ll continue to beat the dead horse until he’s satisfied. until then, dexter--- or 12, rather, is trapped in his office cubicle to do meaningless work, useless - even dangerous tasks, with only mandark to rely on in the end.

;; that’s who number 12 is. SORRY FOR THE SUDDEN DROP THERE, the movie never really gave a clear backstory for 12 & I’m basing him on wickfield’s CORE fanfiction ( which fills in the blanks !!!!! )

;; TDLR; essentially, number 12 is dexter’s adult self, working in a corporation owned by mandark who regularly abuses him - to the point that it’s all 12 knows, as his past memories are all wiped clean & he’s no idea who he is. before this, he & mandark were fighting to get ahead in the company, but mandark stole his ideas & eventually became the head himself ( though implied foul play ), & has presumably tortured dexter to make him the pathetic worker drone he was then. THAT’S about what the film gives us, so it’s up to me to get those blanks filled.

I’ve always been the kind of person that prefers the more ridiculous, slapstick cartoons; NOT TO SAY that either had none of this - but the farther from realism, the better it is for me!  that being said; johnny bravo, despite my lack of having seen it, will ALWAYS be considered one of those CN classics to me! when I think of cartoon network - or particularly, it’s prime time in the 90′s, johnny bravo among other cartoons are the first to cross my mind. I don’t have much of an opinion on it! johnny seems obnoxious but in his hilarious, chad-like way that CAN get a little annoying but will keep you coming back for more. I SHOULD probably give it a look through sometime just to get my vibes checked. 8 / 10, would probably date !

;; as for samurai jack; I have heard NOTHING but good things throughout the series, & you can tell even if you haven’t watched it - that this show was genndy’s BABY & that there was a LOT of love & thought put into each episode. one of the deeper, more impactful shows I’ve heard come from cartoon network back in the day. -- & ESPECIALLY with it’s final seasons being made through the freedom of adult swim’s network. that was a pretty bold & intriguing move, even if I haven’t looked into it myself. once again, I can’t give you much of an opinion aside from what I’ve heard because I haven’t seen the original series NOR the final seasons, but it seems like a work of art! maybe not my cup of tea exactly, but I’d be willing to see it just to understand the hype if nothing else!

;; off the TOP of my head, I want to say ‘ last but not beast. ‘ I personally think it was, flaws aside, a wonderful sendoff to the show-- or rather, the second season ( shakes fist @ savino ) including almost all the characters we loved from the show teaming up against ONE force. watching everyone band together to take down badaxtra just after dexter is forced to reveal his lab? rewatching it each time still gives me serotonin fueled, euphoric goosebumps that keep me amped until I can see it again. no other episode shakes me quite as hard so satisfyingly, BUT !!!! a close finish would be ‘ golden diskette, ‘ for sure. dexter dresses like a candy bar wrapper in that episode & it makes me smile.

;; now - I won’t lie, out of the entire series - those ARE my favorites. I think we know that the artstyle change / reboot / savino seasons I have differing opinions about. BUT I DIGRESS, you didn’t ask me to go off about what I dislike. of course that’s not to bash the ENTIRE reboot, as it does have it’s moments, but the original first few seasons will always hold a higher place in my heart. I also want to make it clear that I haven’t binged the rebooted seasons in full in AWHILE, so this isn’t 100% solid an answer.

;; once more; off the top of my head, I want to say ‘ mind over chatter ‘ will take the favorite spot here. the few episodes voiced by christine cavanaugh have a different, just better tone than the following with candi milo ( not to bash her of course, she did a great job! ) they feel a bit closer to the original series with her voicing dexter again, & even the plots of the episodes she’s in feel a bit more old-school & in tune with the show how it used to be. ‘ school girl crushed ‘ & ‘ voice over ‘ are close runner ups too! though voiced by candi, they have the super-cartoony feel the show should have had rather than the meaner-spirited tone savino sprinkled through the rest of the episodes.

    ⚛ } — Downtrodden little Dexter had peered hard enough & had found the light at the end of a darkened tunnel: distraction, a foe to even the lowest of moods. Through work & visions of technology, the sting of the event prior - sister included had gradually begun to numb & dull itself. Not to say it immediately repaired the damage in it’s wake, of course; alongside a sluggish, body came swollen eyes that struggled to stay open without tearage, quivering lips, & corpse-like slump.     Mandark was considered many things to Dexter, & it’s because of that that he feels he should be ANGRY with the other’s presence - flustereing warmth invading his body, but he also served a decent enough purpose for his brain to be elsewhere, & for that - he wasn’t necessarily welcomed, but he was all the scientist had & it WASN’T his sister. He’ll humor it.

--if we’re talking dexter actually being thrown into the universe of the games, it’s a toss-up really. depending on circumstances & just WHAT specific scenarios are thrown his way, he could last for a LONG while or very few days. it’s been shown a few times in canon that, if / when put into a situation where he has to fight to survive, 9.5 times out of 10 - he can adapt & bend the land to his will. however, given do/n’t star/ve’s plethora of odd creatures & happenings, this could leave his chances closer to 50 / 50. at the VERY beginning, being shot into a new world with terrifying monstrosities & new surroundings with limited time to study it all before having to flee or fight, could very well leave him pushing up daisies before the end of a second day. granted, most of his free time would be spent in hiding, leaving a chance to learn & prepare himself for dangers to come - so long as he’s not attacked WHILE preparing.

;;while dexter will do most WHATEVER he can to keep going another day, he’s truly a coward at heart & would flinch & scramble to get away from MOST everything in situations where he feels especially helpless; & assuming he’s dumped somewhere without technology or tools already provided, even HE would feel doomed from the start. but it’d be up to fate itself to decide if he lives to see the sun or becomes a spider’s next meal. generally though, he very well COULD have a fighting chance! debatably, he could last ( up to? less than? ) a week--???
