In my early elementary school days I used to get chased. It wasn’t necessarily a game, I just often became public enemy number one. (usually of my own volition)

As opposed to the typical large-field prebuilt playground and maybe a basketball ball court or two, my playground comprised half of benches, old tractor tires, and large wooden logs stacked on one another to create a large obstacle course of sorts. The other half was simply an area of woods with small trails woven by the feet of kids running around catching skinks day in and day out.

I don’t know if those little lizards are actually skinks, that’s just what we called them. What I did know was stacking 15 in a little bug catcher is not particularly good for a skink’s health. This is why the particularly talented catchers would often find their prized jar’o’lizards gone and released if left unattended too long.

Long story short, angering kids with status and popularity means you anger their underlings too. And in a fenced off zoo with a gaggle of 10-20 kids on your tail, you better be light on your feet because the chase doesn’t stop till they get tired, you get caught, or you are saved by the bell.

lately my kids have been playing Baby Knife, which consists of somebody acting as a baby with knife hands chasing people while going "baby knife baby knife" over and over. is this a thing or are they just insane

I mean for my own disclaimer, I haven't experienced so much colourism firsthand as I'm mixed and live in Australia - but this is partly also because my mum saw and experienced it a lot growing up in Singapore and she really didn't want to perpetuate it with her own kids. But like I think about the experiences of my mum, my cousins, a lot of my Asian friends whose families still hold these ideas (especially if you're percieved as a woman) and it just feels so pervasive. And then of course it's so obvious in most Asian media.

I feel like I could also go on a whole rant about how racism is highly contextual and in different contexts will be intertwined with xenophobia, colourism, classism, anti-indigenous discrimination and colonialism - and how all these different factors will combine differently in different places based on their own histories - but as you said I feel like a lot of white people are still on an extremely rudimentary understanding of racism. It feels a bit dumb to say "racism isn't black and white" but like, that's the root of it, I guess. Every country has its own history and its own unique ways for people to experience discrimination and unfair standards! Japanese artists who lighten a character's skin probably aren't trying to make them "whiter", they're trying to get them to fit more with Japanese beauty standards. These standards can and should be discussed (although since I'm not at all Japanese I would in no way be an expert), but.... they're not rooted in whiteness.

Endlessly frustrating that the only people who are willing to even complain when an anime character’s skin is lightened by official sources always phrase it like “why is he white!!!” and “she’s so whitewashed in this picture” and “[japanese company] when non-white people exist:” like do you genuinely not realize that non-white people can be racist??? Do you genuinely think every one of these Japanese artists is trying to make their characters look like Europeans, and that’s where the problem lies??

So... Pokémon has officially revealed the Top 300 quarter-finalists for the TCG illustration contest. I myself have participated, but unfortunately, did not make it. There were many awesome artworks!!

However... there has been a suspected case of an individual who entered with multiple identities (similar initials) through AI generated entries - V.K shows up in 6 entries. The weird and unnatural proportions, position, angle (look at vaporeon for instance) all give away indications of AI too.

The rules have clearly outlined multiple identities to lead to disqualification, yet the judges failed to take account into the suspicious number of similar styles appearing more than three times (surprassing the maximum number of 3 entries) with the initials.

"The rules in the contest affirmed that: submissions must be submitted by the Entrant. Any attempt, successful or otherwise, by any Entrant to obtain more than the permitted number of Submissions by using multiple and/or different identities, forms, registrations, addresses, or any other method will void all of that Entrant's Submissions and that Entrant may be disqualified at Sponsors' reasonable discretion."

This is very disappointing, Pokemon TCG. Not even just disappointing, this is very shameful and distasteful to artists who did not make it.

Edit: There also seems to be 2 more entries that are ai prompts but under a different name (pikachu sleeping with a background night landscape and another one sleeping on a tree root)

UPDATE: on Twitter pokemon tcg actually addressed the issue, has disqualified the person with multiple identities and will be selecting more entries from other artists!!
