the  truth  is  that  being  friends  with  benefits  is  new  to  iris.  he's  always  been  an  one-night  stand,  have  fun  once,  then  never  see  each  other  again  kind  of  guy.  safer  that  way.  better  than  risking  mutual,  collateral  damage.  he'll  die  by  holding  onto  his  armor,  so  his  heart  isn't  out  there  in  the  open,  vulnerable,  with  a  bullseye  painted  over  the  vital  organ.  but  kieran's  the  one  person  that  makes  iris  feel  safe.  comfortable.  even  happy.  the mere thought of soulmates never surface the slightest. who the fuck cares about that when what kieran and iris has is real? seeing  kieran  cherish  the  retriever  plush  right  away  like  that  makes  iris'  heart  sing  loudly.  even  all  the  colors  in  the  world  seem  brighter  when  they're  together.  no  way  can  he  hold  back  a  shy,  elated  smile  at  the  touch  of  kieran's  thumb  over  the  back  of  his  hand.  "just  for  you,  i'll  give a shot at  being  on  my best  behavior."  playfulness  curves  his  smile.  iris  holds  kieran's  hand  a  little  tighter,  a  silent  way  of  whispering,  i  love  being  with  you.  iris  scoffs,  but  there's  no  real  bite  to  the  sound.  "when  have  i  ever  burned  anything?  that  stir-fry  was  slightly  singed."  he  sneaks  another  kiss  onto  kieran's  cheek.  "okay,  no  distractions  during  cooking.  but  it's  fair  game  while  we're  grocery  shopping."               

kieran  glances  down  at  the  retriever  keychain  now  clipped  proudly  to  his  jeans.  it’s  ridiculous,  in  the  best  way,  how  much  it  means  to  him.  iris  thought  of  him—just  him—when  he  saw  it,  and  the  thought  alone  makes  something  in  his  chest  does  a  backflip.  it’s  casual,  like  so  much  of  what  they  do  but  there’s  a  quiet  warmth  in  it  that  kieran  doesn’t  try  to  hide.  it’s  not  like  they’re  pretending  to  be  anything  they’re  not—friends  with  benefits,  that's  what  they've  agreed  on,  what  works  for  them—but  sometimes  it’s  hard  to  tell  the  difference  when  everything  comes  so  naturally.  he  wants  to  hold  onto  it  for  a  little  longer  before  the  inevitability  of  marks  and  soulmates  complicates  things.  it's  hard  not  to  think  about  it  when  iris  leans  in  like  this though,  close  and  warm,  fitting  so  seamlessly  into  kieran’s  space.  his  thumb  sweeps  over  the  back  of  iris’s  hand  in  a  small  absent  motion,  almost  instinctive.  he  squints  at  him  as  iris  suggests  cooking  together.  “you?  on  your  best  behavior?  …i'll  believe  it  when  i  see  it.”  his  lips  quirk  into  a  soft,  teasing  smile as he  squeezes  iris’  hand  lightly.  “fine,  we'll  cook.  but  only  if  you  promise  not  to  burn  anything.  and  if  you  get  too  distracted…  you're  on  dish  duty.”
