How Concerned Citizens Drove a Neo-Nazi Out of Rural Maine

Christopher Pohlhaus planned to build a fascist training compound in the woods of rural Maine. The local journalists, veterans, lumberjacks, and policymakers weren't having it.

Pohlhaus, 37, is a former U.S. marine, an itinerant tattoo artist, and a hardcore white-supremacist influencer. He is loud and hostile, and proud to be both. His voice is pitched surprisingly high, and he has a slight Southern drawl. He has a large body and small bald head; a blue-black tattoo crawls up the right side of his face, from his chin to his forehead. Over the years, Pohlhaus has collected thousands of social media followers, who know him by his nickname: Hammer.

Hammer had been living in Texas for a few years when, in March 2022, he bought the land in Maine. He told his followers that he was going to use it to build a haven, operational center, and training ground for white supremacists.

Omg, I love it!

Theory: Greg’s “Like A Comet” lyrics were intended to end on a darker note.

Greg Universe’s song “Like A Comet”, as seen in S2′s “Story for Steven”, paints the picture of a young, ambitious Greg who both saw himself as out of place in his mundane life and believing that he was made for much more extraordinary things. I really love this song, as a pastiche of retro glamrock with its over-use of space symbolism and its earnest honesty from Greg, as well as its blend of splendour and melancholy. But what if that melancholy was meant to run deeper, and it was a last minute decision to cut it back from the song, from a production standpoint? Consider: There is both a very regular rhyme and rhythm to “Like A Comet”, both within and across verses: “Some say I have no direction That I’m a light speed distraction but that’s a knee-jerk reaction“ These lines are all 8 syllables long and end on a ‘shin’ sound. Even as the line length expands for the bridge, the AA rhyme style persists: “This life in the stars is all I’ve ever known Stars and stardust and infinite space is my only home“ Later the rhyme shifts to AABCCB, still very regular: “At the moment that I hit the stage I hear the universe calling my name And I know deep down in my heart I have nothing to fear And as the solar wind blows through my hair Knowing I have so much more left to share A wandering spirit who’s tearing its way through the cold atmosphere”

But the coda is where it gets weird, and where the style breaks down and makes me suspicious:

“I fly like a comet Soar like a comet Crash like a comet I’m just a comet”

The entire song relies on repetition of sounds and metaphors, and this final verse follows the metaphor of what comets do. Ie, Greg compares his own pending life as mirroring that of a comet.  It is a logical progression of ideas: He flies like a comet = takes off from his boring life soars like a comet = reaches his apex of success and enjoys it crashes like a comet = predictably, after peaking, Greg knows that there is an inevitable crash – not a gentle landing for someone who has flown so high and burned so brightly, figuratively flown so close to the sun that the solar winds caught his hair… “I’m just a comet”? It’s clear that this line breaks the progression of the metaphor, as though stepping back from the idea entirely and sighing: ‘Yeah, anyway, so this was a song about me and comets’. It’s an anti-climax for a song which intended to go out in a blaze of glory. So what’s missing? What is the final thing that a comet – at least in the song’s narrative - does? It dies. After the crash, it lies simmering, its energy escaping back into space. It has burnt as bright as it can, blown minds, and gone out in the aforementioned blaze of glory. Now try singing: “I fly like a comet Soar like a comet Crash like a comet Die like a comet.” Doesn’t that make more rhythmic and stylistic sense? The song’s lyrics show such rich grasp of imagery, it makes no sense to me that the song would end on a throwaway line like “I’m just a comet”. That sort of resignation is more something older, low-self-esteemed Season 1 Greg would say. But young Greg Universe? He would want to fly, soar, crash and die. So why is it not that way in the episode? My guess is that perhaps the talk of death was a bit too nihilistic for a show where the main cast can’t truly ‘die’ in the human sense, but do get treated with similar symbolism. But Greg isn’t a Gem, and Greg could truly die. And for a song for Steven? Who’s already lost his mother? Maybe the show staff edited it out. Or maybe Greg edited it out for Steven. Or maybe I’m totally wrong. But please consider: “Live like a comet, die like a comet!”
