I'm late!
Now which was was it again? Ximena had just gotten this job and she was already messing up by being late. She sighed frustrated and started walking further away trying to look for the room she was supposed to be in five minutes ago. She noticed a man covered in tattoos on his cellphone. She gulped then turned to look at him, "Um excuse me, hi, I'm the new interviewer, I got lost and would like to know if you could give me directions to where the interview room is? Please?" She asked biting on her lower lip.

Need new books to read this year. Any current recommendations?
Before I start I really recommend @pridebooks for book recs with lgbtq+ characters! I’m in the server for the blog and the mod is cool and knows about lots of books with lots of different types representation
Anyway here’s my little list from what I’m interested in that’s coming out early 2020, note that I think all of these are going to be YA because I don’t really read adult and also I haven’t read any of these because they are not out yet!
Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibañez is a debut fantasy coming out on January 7th and doesn’t have lgbt+ characters from my quick searches but is an own voices Latinx book heavily inspired by Bolivia and I think it’s worth checking out. The main character Ximena fakes being the last royal and marries the evil Atoc to spy on him and is a story about how nothing is in black in white especially with politics
Adam Silvera (author of They Both Die at the End, More Happy Than Not, and co-author of What If It’s Us?) is releasing Infinity Son on January 14th! It’s a fantasy book about two brothers, Emil and Brighton, going on an adventure with magic war stuff involved. From what I can find one of the brothers is gay, there’s two bi characters, and there’s going to be a super cool f/f couple!
The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper is a contemporary romance releasing February 4th and it’s about Cal, a 17 year old boy who has to move because of his father’s new job working for NASA and he meets another boy who’s also had to move because of his parents NASA job and it sounds like it’s gonna be a really cute romance!
Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli (author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and co-author of What If It’s Us?)and Aisha Saeed is a contemporary also coming out February 4th and is about Jamie, a Jewish boy, and Maya, a Muslim girl, becoming friends as they go door to door doing political canvassing! (No lgbt+ characters from what I can tell btw)
All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace is a fantasy also coming out February 4th and I don’t know about lgbt+ or characters of color because I saw the word mermaid and basically stopped reading the summary so I could dig into it when I can get my hands on it. I’m a humble lesbian, I see the word mermaid related to a dark fantasy and my brain ceases to function
Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales is releasing March 3rd and is a contemporary romance about a Ollie who had a summer romance with Will only to have Will ghost him, Ollie ends up having to move to Wills school where despite the fact Will is closested and Ollie decides he’s not interested the two keep running into each other
We Are Totally Normal by Rahul Kanakia is a contemporary releasing March 23rd and is about Nandan, a boy going into his junior year, who hooks up with his best friend Dave and struggles with his sexuality and what it means for himself and his life
For sequels, a much shorter list:
One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus coming out January 7th and I looooved One of Us is Lying so
I’m also really hyped for the new Miss Peregrine’s book The Conference of Birds by Ransom Riggs coming out January 14th because it’s one of my favorite series
There’s probably a lot I’m not thinking of but these are the ones google reminded me of so!

Esto No Es Berlín (This Is Not Berlin)
Director Hari Sama Stars Xabiani Ponce de León, José Antonio Toledano, Ximena Romo Mexico 2019 Language Spanish (with English subtitles) 1hr 55mins Colour, some black & white
Art goths vs the cult of Hugo Sanchez
This is your classic subcultural coming-of-age story: boy meets new noise, falls for new noise and the fellow lovers of the new noise, and things get a bit messy. Boy – we can usually assume, and certainly can here – will then grow up to be the director of the film you are watching.
It’s 1986, and we’re in México DF. Carlos (Xabiani Ponce de León) is a lanky, Pre-Raphaelite-looking teenager whose classmates seem primarily interested in dirty mags and rucks with rival schools. Carlos digs the centrefolds, is less fond of the fighting. He spends most of his time hanging out with best mate Gera (José Antonio Toledano) and gazing hopelessly at Gera’s older sister Rita (Ximena Romo, who has a definite Linda Cardellini vibe in this film).
Carlos’ home life is not easy: his father is absent and his mother (Marina de Tavira, who played the mother in Roma) paralysed by depression, so he’s left looking after his younger brother.
Then, one happy day, his knack for electrical engineering means he can fix Rita’s band’s synth, and he and Gera get to tag along to their gig at Mexico City’s top underground new wave/goth dive. Pretty instantly, Carlos renounces his love for blues rocky dullards Ten Years After and plunges himself into the polysexual performance art/synth noise thing, alienating his former school chums by sporting eyeliner and Phil Oakey hair. Even worse, Carlos’ new pals are totally opposed to the nation’s big party – the 1986 World Cup.*
As is sometimes the way with these kind of films, the stuff the director seems less interested in – schoolkids being schoolkids – is stronger than the ‘cooler’ bit. The stuff at home and school could only be bourgeois Mexico City, the stuff in the club anywhere where people pretended they were at Warhol’s Factory or the Mudd Club. As the title suggests, that’s kind of what director Hari Sama wants to explore – scenes where everyone knows they are not where the rest of your world thinks it’s at, where you’ll never get see Einstürzenden Neubauten play, only a local band doing their dodgy approximation of EN, and yet everybody involved experiences things as intensely – likely more intensely – than if they actually were in London/NY/Berlin etc. It’s a subject that has been played around with quite a lot in recent times – I thought of This Is Memorial Device, David Keenan’s novel that provides an incredibly detailed and authentically messy (and often rather unpleasant) fictional oral history of the post-punk scene in Airdrie, Scotland (pop 37,130), whose participants are convinced they are miles ahead of what is happening elsewhere.
Sama, though, has nothing particulary fresh to say on the subject. Like a lot of quasi-autobiographical works, This Is Not Berlin has a disappointingly conventional narrative shape. My adolesence didn’t fit a tidy three-act pattern – did yours? And so a reliance on cliches undermines any sense of authenticity.
Maybe Sama’s best contribution to the film is on screen, not off – he gives the film’s standout performance playing Carlos’ favourite uncle, a man refusing to give up on the 1960s. The other bit of casting I like is Mauro Sanchez Navarro as Nico, Carlos’ art-scene mentor and possible romantic interest, whose face really would have fit in in West Berlin at the time.
Which reminds me that these are (unsurprisingly, considering how the country works) a fairly European-looking bunch of people. The characters in this film have two contrasting encounters with Mexico’s not-white majority: once when the band plays at an open-air punk gig out in the sticks (‘You’re the pretty ones, someone tells a bewildered Gera there), and once when they are being processed after being arrested.
This Is Not Berlin is an absorbing, entertaining film, with added value if you have a taste for Latin American teen slang. I just wish it was a little less predictable, a little less rote.
*[NOT REALLY A SPOILER] If you have seen the film, and are wondering about the 68/86 slogan, in the run-up to the 1968 Olympics, hundreds of students were killed by government forces in the historic centre of Mexico City in what is known as the Tlatelolco massacre.

SmashingConf Live! Is A Wrap
About The Author
Rachel Andrew is not only Editor in Chief of Smashing Magazine, but also a web developer, writer and speaker. She is the author of a number of books, including … More about Rachel Andrew …
The SmashingConf team had such fun at their first SmashingConf Live! event last week. In this post, editor-in-chief Rachel Andrew shares highlights and feedback from the online conference.
Last week, we ran our very first SmashingConf Live! event, the first in a series of online events taking us through to the end of 2020. We had an amazing two days and we hope that all of our speakers and attendees did too. In this post, I’ll round up some of the key moments and feedback we’ve had.
A Team Spread Around The World
Here at Smashing, we take remote, distributed working to the extreme, and are very used to dealing with all of our different timezones. However, the conferences are the one time when most of us are together in one place. With all of us in our home locations and timezones, things were very different this time. We shared pictures of our setups in the Slack for the event, and lots of attendees joined in the fun and showed us how they were attending the conference themselves.

It takes a lot of people to bring you an online multi-track conference, so the full team taking care of everything and everyone behind the scenes on the day were:
Andrea de Souza (Volunteer): Canada
Amanda Annandale (Head of Events): Bristol, UK
Bash Choudhry (Volunteer): USA
Bethany Andrew (Event Assistant): London, UK
Charis Rooda (marketing agency Coordinator): Hong Kong
Esther Fernandez (Partnerships Coordinator): Barcelona, Spain
Jan Constantin (Smashing Team): Freiburg, Germany
Jarijn Nijkamp (Membership Lead): Hong Kong
Marc Thiele (Board Member): Dusseldorf, Germany
Mariona Ciller (Partnerships Manager): Barcelona, Spain
Rachel Andrew (Editor-in-Chief): Bristol, UK
Raffaella Isidori (Volunteer): Milan, Italy
Ricardo Gimenes (Illustrator): Malmö, Sweden
Vitaly Friedman (Co-Founder): Dusseldorf, Germany
Really enjoyed the first day of @smashingconf live today. Especially the side tracks really made the experience for me.
There you had the chance to ask questions, engage in discussions, enjoy the chats. Very immersive and engaging and definitely a highlight.

Our Conference Platform
When selecting a conference platform it was important to us to have something that would enable the fun and interactivity of an in-person SmashingConf. We wanted to have sidetracks, games, places to ask questions of our speakers, all along with main stage content. While we use Zoom for workshops, we didn’t feel that asking you all to sit through two days of Zoom meetings would be very Smashing at all.
We’re running our conferences on Hopin, a friendly, inclusive platform, with Smashing branding and plenty of cats. With interactive, live sessions and live captioning. Watch a video preview. (Large preview)
Amanda and the rest of the team looked at a number of options and we ultimately chose to use Hopin. We trialed the platform for our Smashing Meets events, but this was the first time we would be running at such a scale. Everything worked really well, and speakers and attendees seemed to like the setup. As a speaker, I found it felt far more interactive than the usual online conference solutions, and less like I was presenting to my office wall!
100% agree, Paul. It’s a fantastic setup, and the moderation and flow just WORKS! Well done @smashingmag @smashingconf team! https://t.co/Xy9BKgyVTx

A Lot Of Fun, And A Lot Of Learning
With multiple sessions happening at once we had a lot of speakers sharing their knowledge with us. As with our in-person events, everyone created shared Google Docs of takeaways over the two days — Day One, Day Two. MC Phil Hawksworth kept everything on track on the main stage.
Some amazing sketchnotes were created by Ximena which give you a snapshot of the key takeaways from many of the talks and sessions.
I think this may be the last of the #sketchnotes maybe.

We even had our conference DJ Tobi playing some tunes between the mainstage talks — just like at our in-person events.
Badges
We felt that a virtual conference should have badges too. So, for SmashingConf Live we had badges featuring a variety of cats. Attendees tried to find all of the different cats — all 96 of them!
Friendly SmashingConf badges for cat collectors! Every attendee gets their own badge and can trade them when meeting new people. Illustrated by our cherished illustrator, Ricardo Gimenes.
It really did feel like an event, rather than a webinar, and it was great to see so many people — and to meet their cats! That’s something we don’t get to do at our usual events.
These virtual badges for @smashingconf are awesome!
I particularly vibe with the low dexterity score. pic.twitter.com/4wYL1ftNpX

Wishing You Were There?
If you wish you could have joined us then you have three more chances for some SmashingConf online fun! We’ve taken all of our 2020 events online, which means that between now and the end of the year you have three to choose from.
SmashingConf Freiburg Online (Sep 7–8)
The SmashingConf Freiburg is moving online on the original dates: September 7th–8th. One track, two days and 13 speakers, with all of the actionable insights you expect from SmashingConf. We’ll be running the event tied to the timezone in Germany — making this a great event for Europeans. Check out the schedule, and buy tickets here.
SmashingConf Austin/NY Online (Oct 13–14)
We have combined the programming for New York and Austin as these two events were so close together and similar to each other. We’ll be running this event in Central time, just as if we were all in Austin. Check out the schedule, and buy tickets here. We’d love to see you in October!
SmashingConf SF Online (Nov 10–11)
In PST, join us for a SmashingConf San Francisco on November 10th–11th. The schedule and tickets are online for you to take a look at. We’ll be sure to have a great celebration for our final event of 2020!
Can’t wait to virtually see you there!

GREAT TALK at @smashingconf from dina Amin. Beautiful story and Stop Motion creations with a few other thinkery things
“How big is your fishbowl?”#smashingConf pic.twitter.com/FMIJFbYuWg
— Ximena Vf. (@ximenavf92) August 21, 2020

“Alright, seems simple enough.” Phil smiled, clearing his throat. “Me is toy.” He actually butchered it by separating the one word into two and completely mispronouncing it. He grimaced at his mistake, “that was a huge screw up, wasn’t it?” He chuckled.

“Yeah, we’re all set.” Phil smiled. “Ximena, right?” He asked, he’d actually remembered her name, he just wanted to pose the question as more of a precaution, “maybe you could give me more Spanish lessons than just this one?” He chuckled, “god knows I could use ‘em.” Phil laughed as they walked down the hall.

Phil had been scanning through his texts, trying to find the most recent one about an idea that Hunter had for a new promotional shoot and for his new character direction. He looked up from his phone as he heard the voice of the woman asking him for directions, “huh? Oh yeah sure.” He smiled, “just keep going down this hall and take a left when you get to the end, then the room you need is the third door on your right.” Or was it the second on the left? He didn’t really remember which one was the interview room, and his own mind was too jumbled from all of the requests he’d gotten for his own work so he didn’t really care if he was right or wrong. “Good luck!” Phil offered a bit of good vibes to the woman. I probably gave her the wrong room... he thought to himself, but then again...it’s not my problem.
