sooo like so like. do we think about how many people haymitch has lost within his life. assuming that his father dies sometime within his childhood because haymitch bares no mention of him and the lack of a father goes unquestioned, that's one. within the 50th with maysliee's death, that's two. 2 weeks post-games, his mother, brother, and girlfriend all are killed. five deaths. from the 51st hunger games and onwards it's racking up to 51, considering that each and every mentee minus katniss and peeta die. (being 46 in total.) so before katniss & peeta are in the picture he's already grappled with that many deaths. so it makes sense that he's so contorted by memories and blood and anguish.

hence why i cannot believe that his family's deaths were the tipping point to start his addiction because there's so much burden to come further within his life. it's a steady journey of hope into despair and desperation and trying so hard to forget. and with these deaths he's so adamantly this embodiment of an overly-empathetic persona. he does anything and everything to keep both kids alive, despite the personal sacrifices. he has such a huge saviour complex and it stems from loss and failure. failure to win, to truly survive. and yet he keeps surviving despite.
