Ik this maybe sounds kinda random but I have a feeling you're latinoamerican Idk why.
Also what are your thoughts on the anime? I really liked the CGI I think it looked very cool and clean!! A-1 pictures did a good job 👏👏 I know it just started but I really hope its successful in japan, so maybe one day we could see Osaka and Nagoya animated :')
That’s probably because I am and am fairly vocal about it.
I live in the US and am racially pretty damn white, but my mother’s family is from Mexico. (Sorta. They’ve been in the US for a while now, and we’re not exactly sure who came across the border when because most old Mexican men can give Gentarou a run for his money when it comes to telling mentiras.) I was raised speaking both English and baby Spanish, but I lost the opportunity to practice it all that often when I was pretty little and as such forgot almost all of it, hahaha. Still, I can understand most written Spanish and a fair bit of common spoken Spanish, and I speak Spanglish with my mom. Growing up mostly white is pretty weird, since I don’t feel Latino enough to fit in with my own family (but they ARE my family) but also not white enough to fit in completely with my white peers. They don’t get how enchiladas are comfort food or how the words “mijo” and “mija” are love incarnate. They don’t get it why my parents have three bags of tortillas in their fridge at all times (it’s because I keep stealing them whenever I run out at my house) or the importance of owning a big-ass olla. It’s like... I don’t want to intrude in spaces where I don’t necessarily feel I have the right to belong, but I also want to acknowledge the struggle of my grandparents who worked as migrant farmers instead of going to school and gave up everything they had to give their kids a better life. I wonder how well I can do that, having forgotten their language and living as so much as a product of “American melting pot” culture. It’s... tricky. Identity is tricky.
Point is, I want to see Dice casually calling Otome “vieja”.
ANYWAY. Anime thoughts. I’ll put them under a cut for anyone concerned about spoilers.
The little kick the Buster Bros did in the opening on “buttobasu” (send ‘em flying) made me involuntarily laugh out loud. So dorky. Love them for that.
I was not sold on the opening back when I saw it in the previews, but I actually liked the full version quite a lot. The rap bits are a lot more impressive than the sort of generic chorus.
Love how it opened on TDD. I hope other episodes will follow suit and give more TDD backstory, because I think it delivers the best emotional impact when you know the reasons the anime boys are duking it out with one another.
TDD Samatoki has giant eyelashes even in the anime. Jesus christ.
TDD Ramuda appeared for about three seconds, and I was appeased.
The Buster Bros bit didn’t interest me too much, personally, but I thought it set the tone for the series really nicely. I also thought that a bunch of random dudes ganging up on these children and being like, “Heh heh, bitch, whatcha gonna do? We have microphones!” is hilarious.
BB rap was fantastic. I appreciated how much of a mix this was between the ARB and manga styles in terms of the way the raps appeared. Having the lyrics on screen was a GREAT thing for me as well. I also really enjoyed the moment where Saburou pushed Jirou out of the way and Ichirou stopped Jirou before he could retaliate. It wasn’t a distraction from the song at all but also characterized the familial interactions so clearly in just a few seconds. Kudos.
My VPN connection died during Ichijiku’s first talk with Otome, so idk what went on there.
I know Samatoki is supposed to be taken seriously, but for the life of me, I really can’t. I kept on snickering the whole time he was talking to the yakuza NPCs and acting tough. All his posturing is ridiculous to me.
Loved that MTC rap, although I kept laughing at that too. MTC is overkill.
I have a love/hate relationship with Samatoki’s speaker ever since I had to redraw part of that motherfucker sometime last year, but it is really damn cool looking. The animation for it blew me away. LOVED THAT.
Riou was there :)
I finally understood the significance of the cigarette kiss between Samatoki and Juuto. It’s to symbolize the whole “I scratch your back, you scratch mine” professional relationship they have, but I did think Juuto was leaning in for a kiss for a really bizarre moment.
Riou showing up to offer food :)
Eat Riou’s fucking food, Samatoki :)
I think Ramuda is a bit smaller than he should be as compared to the other cast members, but I will let it slide
Ramuda’s office is absolutely awful in color, but I will also let that slide
The Fling Posse interactions were a huge hit with me. I love seeing them hang out with one another and horse around the way that they do. Like the BBs’ scene, this was a great establishing shot for them.
I love how Dice rolls with Ramuda’s gratuitous English without missing a beat.
FP song wasn’t as hardcore as some of the other ones, but it was executed very well. Love the wordplay with the end of Ramuda’s and the beginning of Gentarou’s verse.
THE HIGH FIVE AT THE END OF THE SONG... HOO HOO!! NOW THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, BABY! NOW THAT’S FRIENDSHIP RIGHT THERE!
Hypmic NPCs lowkey piss me off, especially all the “Kyaaa~!!!!” female NPC types. I get that they’re not supposed to be thought about all that much, but seriously...? Why is running from fangirls a plot point that keeps on being revisited?
They left Dice’s money behind... Bruh.......
Love how Doppo and Hifumi barge into Jakurai’s office nonchalantly.
The bit with the nurse establishes Hifumi’s character very well, although I still think Doppo’s being kind of an ass when he pulls Hifumi’s jacket off.
The whole fucking “terrorists on the roof” bit made me laugh again. Some of the Hypmic plot points are so contrived that I find them funny. It’s all silly good fun.
Love that rappers show up to push past the bumbling security guards/police. Excuse me, please, let me through... I’m a rapper.
Jakurai’s speaker was very well animated, but the way it appeared made me think of the Lionsgate logo. The mic animation was pretty cool too.
JAKURAI’S RAP ACTUALLY BLEW ME AWAY. I’m normally not a fan of Jakurai raps, but god DAMN was that cool.
Hifumi and Doppo didn’t drop the ball either. Fuck it UP, Matenrou.
I can’t believe they dropped lightning bolts on two people... especially when one was holding someone else hostage. Is that woman okay? Did she get fucking vaporized? I’ll never know.
Otome’s character model moves pretty stiffly, which I think actually helps her character because of how stoic she tries to act overall.
Ending song was dope. I wonder if they’ll feature other divisions in the endings of other episodes.
Ramuda leaping a good 3 meters in the air in the final shot is funny as fuck.

Space Ghost Coast to Coast #85: “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” | December 7, 2003 - 11:30 PM | S08E04
Happy 20th anniversary, Adult Swim. And, boy, what a momentous episode of Ghost do we have here to celebrate. There are a number of episodes where the guest is an event unto itself and this is truly one of them. Frequent punchline William Shatner is an absolute cunt... and a proper legend. His cuntiness and legendary status are two things that seem to be at odds with one another, and the Space Ghost crew have managed to come up with an artfully idiosyncratic episode to match Shatner’s weird-guy-ness. It’s a classic for sure, and important. But (making a “smug dipshit” face) is it funny?
YES! It’s FUNNY! I will admit though, the first time I saw this episode I didn’t quite know what to make of it. This is partially because I’m very much a Star Trek agnostic. I’ve never been into Star Trek. In the last few years I’ve watched most of the pre-Next Gen motion pictures for inane list-making reasons, and I enjoyed them to varying degrees, but Star Trek is truly not for me. I’m more of a... well, I’m not a Star Wars guy either. What’s the other one? Uh... Spaceballs. That’s it. I’m more of a Spaceballs guy.
But I feel like I’ve absorbed a lot of Star Trek lore through cultural osmosis. I vaguely understand that William Shatner has had some deliberately-paced choreographed fight scene on those rocks from Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. When I hear music similar to the the music that Jim Carrey hums in The Cable Guy, I’m pretty sure whatever it is I’m watching is doing a Star Trek thing. And yes, I’ve watched every single Red Letter Media “Mike and Rich talk about Star Trek for 4 hours” video. But even today, after having picked up more Star Trek knowledge on my journey to the grave, I still have this nagging feeling of “I only sort of get this”.
Still, this episode has a handful of screamingly funny lines, and the episode ends wonderfully, with Space Ghost in his death throes, suffering the ultimate indignity of dying in front of William Shatner. There’s also the part where Zorak asks why everyone in Star Trek is black, and a part where Moltar nervously reads from his fan fiction (from a book labeled TARD WARS, hahaha). Shatner, who has a reputation for being arrogant and difficult, is as good a sport as one could hope. The show makes good use of his hammier moments, and only shits on him slightly in the process. The most notable moment is when Shatner says to Zorak “didn't you and I fight to the death?” to which Zorak replies “That sounds pretty dumb, man”. I’ve actually quoted this line many times. It’s one of the best.
Also, for those of you who like to track these things: the show features callbacks to other episodes and shows; the handimen at Zorak’s apartment are clearly extras from Sealab 2020/2021, one of the Leprechauns from Aqua Teen Hunger Force shows up, and there’s a poignant callback to classic Space Ghost episode “Banjo”.
The title motif of this season is naming the episodes after Allman Brothers songs, and I always wondered about this one. Maybe I’m reaching, and it’s probably too disrespectful to be true, but I always thought that it was somehow a veiled reference to Shatner’s wife, whom he supposedly killed or let die. It’s simply too dark to be true, but it’s the first thought that immediately jumped to my mind when I first heard the title of this episode. Am I stupid for thinking this? Am I stupid because it OBVIOUSLY is a reference to that?? I simply do not know. I would like to know.
MAIL BAG
The big anniversary is upon us. What are your 20 favorite things about adult swim for 20 years going. Don't sleep on this question!
I gotta do SOMETHING special, so I might as well do this. More thought could have gone into this, but I spent about an hour trying to come up with episodes or moments from 20 different shows and putting them in rough chronological order. I limited myself to one episode/scene/moment/joke/whatever per show so it’s not all Space Ghost jokes. So, here we go:
Sealab 2021: “I, Robot”. Adult Swim proved it could be brilliant right out of the gate with the stealth premiere of “I, Robot”, but for Sealab it’s all downhill from here. (2000)
Space Ghost Coast to Coast: Space Ghost stops in his tracks to reminisce about the time Bobcat Goldthwait said "crack a window". The entire episode “Kentucky Nightmare” is brilliant, but this moment in particular so uniquely captures my sense of humor that it’s inexplicable. The dumb look on Space Ghost’s face when he stops in his tracks. Goddamn. (2001)
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: “Mayhem of the Mooninites” I tried very hard to make this all be individual jokes or scenes or whatever, but this is another episode where the entire thing is just line after line and I can’t really pick. This, “I Robot”, and “Kentucky Nightmare” is like a perfect trio illustrating how good Adult Swim really was right out of the gate. (2001)
Home Movies: Jason casually reveals that his parents have no idea who Brendon and Melissa are and that he spends most of his free-time making movies with them. This is the episode “Storm Warning” which is overall one of the best episodes of Home Movies, but this scene is probably my favorite. Illustrates how simple and hilarious the comedy is on this show. (2002)
Tom Goes to the Mayor: the end scene in “Undercover”, where they’ve shoddily reversed Tom’s various unnecessary surgeries and called him “Taumpy Tears” to boot. Positively sublime. (2006)
Metalocalypse: Dr. Rockso’s music video. From the episode “Dethclown”. I was never in love with this show as much as the true fans were, but there were a handful of incredible episodes. This episode basically tells one joke over and over and it’s very funny. It really ends with a bang showcasing Dr. Rockso’s shitty music video that celebrates cocaine use. His singing voice is hilarious. (2006)
Assy McGee: I am the only person in the world that defends Assy McGee as being “actually pretty good” and it’s all entirely due to this one line: Assy McGee (a pair of naked buttocks with legs, whose ass functions as his head) is forced to attend a black tie event and is just milling around wearing nothing but a black bow tie. Through clenched anus he delivers the line “I can barely breathe in this penguin suit”. The whole show is worth it for that joke. I don’t even know what episode it is except that it’s from one of the first few. I might not even have the line exactly right. But, I remember laughing so hard. I may not have laughed at Assy McGee again. (2006)
Saul of the Mole Men: The opening theme song. And nothing else. (2007)
Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!: Jim and Derrick. I should pick something more user-friendly maybe, since this episode almost entirely relies on being familiar with Tim & Eric’s previous episodes. But goddamn, this episode is such a funny concept (which is basically Tim & Eric doing an alternate MTV-ified version of Awesome Show) (2008)
Moral Orel: “Numb”. When Moral Orel suddenly stopped being a quirky Adult Swim comedy and suddenly started doing episodes that resembled art films. This episode is a fucking masterpiece. I remember sobbing the first time I saw it. There are a few in season 3 that are like that, but this one is my favorite. (2008)
Check it Out! with Dr. Steve Brule: Terry Bruge-Hiplo reviews “Dumpster’s Children”. Another bit of comedy that I’d describe as “inexplicable” and “sublime”, and it all hinges on an old man’s mouth. Holy fuck. I don’t think I’ve laughed harder than this at a TV show since. (2010)
Delocated: The ending of “Mole”, an extended Face/Off riff where Jon goes undercover as the scary mobster Sergei. In the final moments of the episode he marries a woman, fathers multiple children with her, and only then is pulled out of the mission. The episode is a tour-de-force of comic acting by Steve Cirbus, who is graciously allowed to shine for most of the episode. But man, that ending is fucking wonderful. (2010)
Venture Bros.: The ending of “Operation P.R.O.M.” a flurry of emotions hit me when “Like a Friend” by Pulp starts playing. The scene is so well done and weirdly touching. Brock realizes that deep down he gives a shit about the Venture family and is genuinely terrified something might happen to them. And then he gets to slaughter a bunch of Zorak monsters, which is also weirdly sweet. It’s even touching on a meta-level knowing that Jackson and Doc tried many times and failed to include licensed music in the show. I love Venture Bros, but I think we’d all be better off if this were the series finale. Sorry. I had to say it. (2010)
The Heart She Holler: The first scene with Patton being taught the way of the world posthumously by his father on a VHS tape. The first season of this show is amazing, but that scene, especially where Patton does a little Japanese bow and says “oh, hot dog!” is just hysterical. Literally every time a hot dog comes up in conversation my wife and I quote it. Please, do not scorn her, it’s not racist when SHE does it. (2011)
Eagleheart: The All That Jazz inspired finale. “Paradise Rising” is mostly a masterpiece, and how it ends is so fucking incredible. Easily the most under-rated show on Adult Swim and I’m not just saying that because... you know (mimes dick-sucking) (2014)
Rick and Morty: I watched the first two episodes of Rick and Morty, thought it was good, but for some reason didn’t become a devotee until my wife made me watch the Mr. Poopybutthole episode. It’s still my favorite episode, I think. (2015)
Brett Gelman’s Dinner in America: The “Dinner with” specials are all really good, but goddamn, this one hits. Should be shown in schools. I am going to go to every grade school in my county with an AR-15 (to get past the guards, of course) and I won’t leave until they call an assembly and they let me fumble around trying to find it on vimeo and play it for the students. (2016)
The Eric Andre Show: Eric interviews Steve Schirripa. The bit where he has an intern dip his balls in Steve’s spaghetti sauce is hilarious, naturally, but I’m here to showcase the running gag where every time Steve complains how hot the studio is, Eric just wordlessly hands him an ice cube until Steve explodes. It’s one of the most childishly hilarious things I’ve ever seen. It’s perfect. (2016)
Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace: The Pick-Up artist sketch. I’m mostly unimpressed with MDE, and all but a few Sam Hyde bits leave me cold. But this sketch is a crowning achievement. I mean, I think these guys suck politically and are more mean than funny, but their sensibilities yielded one really incredible piece of comedy. Okay, I laughed at the blackface sketch too. There. You dragged it out of me. (2016) Joe Pera Talks With You: This show is beautiful and I love every episode. But the episode “Joe Pera Reads You The Church Announcements” Wherein Joe discovers a new-to-him song and can’t stop listening to it, is one of the most joyous episodes of television I’ve ever seen. A gateway episode. I tell everyone to please watch this one first. (2018)

Episode 33: The One where WWX Needs to Stop Touching Swords of the Un-Sexy Kind
So we start the episode with MAXIMUM PAIN
JC is crying and shaking and clinging to jyl’s dead body and I WANT TO DIE
Plus side, wwx grabbed the guy who stabbed jyl and choked him to death
Now wwx is surrounded by all the stupid idiots that comprise the cultivator world and they’re all hurling insults and accusations at him and MY POOR SUNSHINE BOY IS JUST HAVING A BREAKDOWN
We get a shot of lwj who is fighting tooth and nail against the cultivators but he’s surrounded and can’t get to wwx
Also, just so you all know, LWJ HAS THE BEST FIGHT SCENES. He just stopped two blades at once and knocked the guys down
Oh noooo, wwx pulls out his demon flute and starts playing! Resentful energy starts going even more crazy!
Lwj: wei ying, stop!
EVERYTHING IS AWFUL
AND IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE
Wwx is crying as he’s playing and i’m DYING INSIDE
Oh no! Wwx just spat a bunch of blood
Lwj sees him spit out the blood
AND SUDDENLY THEIR SONG IS PLAYING ON A CELLO, ALL SLOW, AND IT HURTS SO MUCH TO HEAR IT PLAYED THIS WAY
While lwj is distracted by the sight of his soulmate breaking down some ASSHOLE ATTACKS HIM FROM BEHIND AND CUTS HIS ARM
He takes him down and then slides effortlessly into another attack that manages to legit slice some dude’s neck open
OUR BOY IS NOT HOLDING BACK AT ALL, FOLKS
SO FAR LWJ’S MAD FIGHTING SKILLS ARE THE ONLY THING KEEPING ME TOGETHER
Oh no
Wwx just pulled out Plot Device 2 after getting the high ground, and lwj is watching him from below as he does this
Wwx: since you want it so much, come take it with your own ability
And he just chucks it to the crowd
We get to see all the greed and desire for power from all the cultivators here as they start cutting each other down to get their hands on this thing
It disgusts me
Now wwx is laughing BUT IT IS NOT HAPPY LAUGHTER. IT IS DESPERATE GRIEVING LAUGHTER, I HATE IT SO MUCH
AND LWJ IS WATCHING WITH A HELPLESS LOOK ON HIS FACE
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
WWX IS AT THE CLIFF
THAT ONE CLIFF WE HATE
I CAN’T DO THIS
OH GOD
Lwj: wei ying, come back
He says this so softly and full of desperation
He’s so scared
But wwx just steps back more, closer to the cliff’s edge and HE’S CRYING AND JUST LETS HIMSELF FALL
LWJ FUCKING LUNGES FOR HIM
OH GOD I CAN’T DO THIS
I CAN’T
Lwj barely manages to grab him in time and he grips him tight in his hand with all his might
Wwx looks so surprised, completely shocked that someone would try to save him at this point
Lwj, on the other hand, has a grim determined look on his face. He caught his soulmate, just barely, but he caught him and he will not let go!!
Wwx: lan zhan
There’s blood streaming down lwj’s hand from the wound on his arm and it’s just pouring over wwx’s hand
Wwx just hangs there limply, making no move to pull himself up towards lwj
Wwx: lan zhan, let me go
NONONONONONONO
Lwj’s grip SLIPS FOR A SECOND THAT GIVES ME A FREAKING HEART ATTACK but he manages to adjust his grip and clutch at him HARDER
He hasn’t said a word! He hasn’t said anything bc he’s focusing everything he has on holding onto wwx
Then we see jc striding into the scene and I’M DYING I’M DYING THIS IS GOING TO HURT SO BAD
Jc gets to lwj’s side and looms over the both of them
Wwx: jiang cheng…
And wwx for a split second looks happy; he’s happy to see his brother bc it’s his brother, the guy who’s been with him since they were children
But jc draws his sword and glares at him
And that joy peters off into pained acceptance bc wwx thinks he deserves this
Nononononononononononono my yunmeng bros don’t do this to me, please no
Lwj: Jiang Wanyin, stop it!
LWJ IS SAYING THIS THROUGH GRITTED TEETH BC HE SAW JC DRAW HIS SWORD
HE SEES HIM AIMING IT THREATENINGLY AT HIS SOULMATE
AND HE DOES NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH OR ABILITY TO BLOCK HIM RIGHT NOW BECAUSE HE CAN’T LET GO OF WWX
Jc takes his sword and tells wwx to go to hell and strikes the stone between lwj and wwx
It’s enough to wobble where lwj is at and wwx SEES this and panics
HE WILL NOT BRING LAN ZHAN DOWN WITH HIM
So he yanks his arm from lwj’s grip and lets himself fall
Lwj: WEI YING
AND WE HEAR LWJ SHOUT HIS SOULMATE’S NAME. IT’S FULL OF DESPAIR BC HIS SOULMATE IS LOST TO HIM NOW
AND HIS FACE IS JUST ALL DEVASTATION AND HEARTBREAK
KILL ME KILL ME IT HURTS TOO MUCH
And then the camera pulls back and lwj looks so small standing on that cliff as jc just walks away
Lwj: wei ying
He says his soulmate’s name one last time in a pained gasp, like he can’t get enough air in his lungs, like breathing hurts, bc EVERYTHING HURTS, HE JUST LOST HIS SOULMATE
And then before, i can spiral into a nervous breakdown from the sheer ENORMITY OF EMOTIONS THIS SHOW JUST SHOVED DOWN MY THROAT...
We get a time skip!
~16 years later~
The scene opens to lwj playing ~their song~ on the guqin
Oh god it sounds so beautiful
It’s played in a way that sounds soothing and peaceful
Probably to keep the audience from finding a cliff and taking a dive…
Also, this is the first time we see lwj with his hair down! Or at least it doesn’t have a fancy hairpiece in it; it’s still tied back a bit tho
It’s a fucking travesty that we don’t get to see his hair like this more often. He looks so freaking soft here…
In fact everything looks so soft here: out of focus shots of wwx and lwj, a breeze gently rustling the curtains…
It really is just what i needed to recover from what happened like, two seconds ago, tho, so kudos to the showrunners
Now we get a quick series of flashbacks to mo xuanyu, the juniors, etc etc
The show’s like hey guys, remember 30 episodes ago we started telling a different story with a whole bunch of other characters??
Yeah, we didn’t think so, let us remind you real quick
AND ~THEIR SONG~ IS PLAYING THE WHOLE TIME
Okay, we’re back at present-day Ancient Fantasy China and wwx just starts regaining consciousness
Of course the first thing he does is tenderly watch lwj play their love song
Wwx: sixteen years...it feels like a dream
IT’S VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW THAT THE FLUTE PART OF THEIR SONG STARTS UP AS SOON AS WWX STARTS TO SPEAK
Lwj: you’re awake
I AM HAVING FEELINGS
MUCH LESS PAINFUL FEELINGS THAN 5 MINUTES AGO, BUT THERE’S A LOT OF THEM AND IDK WHAT TO DO
Lwj continues to play on his guqin
Wwx: i never thought i could still be alive
Lwj: the day you fell of the cliff, jc insisted on searching for your body but he could only see the bones of the dead
Wwx: what about you? Have you ever tried looking for me?
Of COURSE HE FUCKING DID YOU’RE HIS SOULMATE WHAT DID YOU THINK HE WAS GOING TO DO, OH MY GOD
Lwj: three years later, i went there but there were no bones left
God, they’re both speaking so gently to each other
like they can’t quite believe they’re able to have this conversation, that this reunion is happening at all.
Wwx: why three years later?
Lwj’s hands freeze over the guqin when he asks this
Lwj: these 16 years…
NOTICE HOW LWJ POINTEDLY DOES NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION
Wwx: if i say i don’t know where i was these last 16 years, will you believe me?
Lwj: yes, i believe you
His voice is all soft and full of feeling
Wwx: lan zhan, did you really believe me back then?
HAVE I MENTIONED THAT THEY’RE SPEAKING TO EACH OTHER EVER SO SOFTLY AND TENDERLY AND GENTLE-LIKE?? I AM FULL TO THE BRIM WITH EMOTIONS RN
WWX IS TEARY EYED THE WHOLE TIME, MY HEART MY HEART
Oh, now we cut to a freaking beautiful shot of lwj sitting on a rock with his guqin on his lap, surrounded by trees and a waterfall
HE’S FUCKING GLOWING IN THIS SHOT
And my god the scenery in this show is just so fucking gorgeous
Like, how did they make it so beautiful???
We cut back to wwx and watch as wwx steps out of the Silence Room (aka the jingshi, aka LWJ’S BEDROOM) and starts wandering the Cloud Recesses
And i’m here like ummm? Where’s your mask wwx? YOU’RE WANDERING THE CLOUD RECESSES PRETTY CONFIDENTLY THERE WITHOUT YOUR MASK.
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING.
We do get cute little flashbacks as wwx reminisces about the last time he was here tho
It’s bittersweet
Oh, he’s coming up to the library pavilion and ~THEIR SONG~ starts playing again!
WE FLASHBACK TO ANGRY BB!LWJ
LOOK AT HOW PRECIOUS AND LITTLE THEY ARE HERE.
BABIES, THEY’RE ALL BABIES HERE.
Y’KNOW, BEFORE THEY GET HIT WITH ALL THAT WAR AND LOSS AND EMOTIONAL TRAUMA
Now we cut to wwx wandering the back hills of the cloud recesses and there are bunnies!!! HELLO BUNNIES, WE MISSED YOU~!
Wwx picks up one of the bunnies and starts petting them
Wwx: little bunny, do you remember me?
SO CUTE, I DIE.
Wwx: i didn’t know that you were still being kept here after so many years!
He’s holding the bunny so gently and petting them AHHHH
Wwx: didn’t that fuddy duddy say he didn’t like you?
HE SMILES SO SWEETLY AT THE PRECIOUS LITTLE BUNNY
Wwx finishes his time with the bunny and casually makes his way towards the cold spring
HALF NAKED LWJ
WET HALF NAKED LWJ
CHILLING IN THE COLD SPRING BEING TOTALLY GAY
Oh, but when wwx realizes who’s in the cold spring, he gets this pleased little smile on his face!!
That smile slips right off his face tho when he sees that lwj’s back is littered with scars
The music here gets all low and ominous here too.
Wwx’s brows get all furrowed and his mouth drops open in shock
Wwx: whips?
Lwj turns around and sees wwx standing there
he seems pretty surprised to see wwx there, actually, his eyes widen and everything
When he does this HE REVEALS THE WEN BRAND BURNED INTO HIS CHEST RIGHT WHERE WWX HAD IT BURNED INTO HIM IN THE MURDER TURTLE CAVE
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Wwx lets out a little gasp and jerks back in shock when he sees it
At that, lwj immediately flicks his gaze downward and to the side in an obviously nervous gesture
He robes up pretty quickly from here (like REALLY quickly)
Wwx is still staring at him with his eyes all wide but not in a “omg hot naked dude” way; more in a “oh no, what happened?!” sort of way
Side note to mention I LOVE HOW LWJ LOOKS WITH WET HAIR, IDK WHY BUT I DO
Lwj: you’re awake
Wwx: lan zhan, the whips on your back...
Lwj: *looks down and doesn’t answer*
Wwx: you have always been a model among the disciples. What on earth have you done to deserve such a severe punishment?
His brow is all furrowed and he looks almost angry
But his voice is soft and serious and full of concern
And i’m sitting here like, OH BOY, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO LIKE THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION WWX
Wwx: lan zhan, answer me
WHAT IF HE DOESN’T ANSWER, WWX? HMMM? WHAT WILL YOU DO THEN?
REMEMBER THAT ONE TIME HE DEMANDED YOU ANSWER HIM AND YOU GOT ALL MEAN AND SNARKY?
BECAUSE I DO
I’M STILL NOT OVER IT, THAT WAS REALLY MEAN OF YOU
Lwj: *pointedly stays silent and keeps his gaze lowered*
And here the some lan disciples interrupt before we can get any answers
They’re here to give us Plot, how dare they
Apparently lqr got himself in trouble; couldn’t control a spirit or smth. What a rookie.
But we don’t care bc he’s wwx’s nemesis lol
Wwx and lwj rush over to the “Underworld Chamber” where lqr is at
Yes, they have a building called the Underworld Chamber bc the lan clan specializes in dramatics i guess
And also, somehow between the cold spring to the underworld chamber, lwj’s hair dries completely and he has it all done up again with his snazzy silver hairpiece??
Which, actually, is freaking hilarious if you think about it
Like, oh, gotta go save my uncle but if he sees me so disheveled he’ll make me write lines for sure...better get myself dolled up before i arrive there
Wwx does his cool magic talisman thing to bust open the doors of the dramatically named chamber and then locks the doors up behind them once he and lwj get in
Lwj looks very worried about his uncle, who is currently swooned into the arms of some rando lan disciple
Lwj immediately takes over the guqin bc he’s the Guqin Master and starts playing Magic Music
and the possessed sword is floating in the middle of the room exuding Bad Vibes™
Wwx whips out his shoddy flute and starts playing the Magic Music too bc it’s DUET TIME, BABY
Lol lqr immediately starts groaning when he hears the flute start up
Wwx’s like oh shit, lqr will recognize me if i play masterfully as i usually do so he switches from playing Magic Music to playing ~Their Song~ but, like, horribly??? It’s terrible terrible flute playing.
(also, like, i know they’re all acting, none of them know how to actually play the instruments their characters play but here i’m like ARE YOU EVEN TRYING?? DO THOSE FINGERINGS BELONG TO ANY ACTUAL NOTES???)
(I know i wasn’t the greatest at playing the flute in high school--okay, i was actually a pretty shitty flutist BUT EVEN I CAN TELL THAT THOSE FINGERINGS ARE BULLSHIT)
(okay i’m done yelling about the flute-playing now)
AND LOL LWJ’S FACE IS LIKE WHAT WHAT WHAT ARE YOU DOING, THAT SOUNDS HORRENDOUS HOW DARE YOU MUTILATE OUR LOVE SONG THAT WAY
Lqr: stop the flute! Get out!!
I’M D Y I N G LOLOLOL
Wwx stops playing and looks at lqr like, yikes
Lqr: no more…
And then he passes out like a drama queen omg
Wwx looks at lwj like “oops, sorry about your uncle??”
But after lqr is very much unconscious he starts playing Magic Music well again
So that all happens and eventually the sword spirit chills out and clatters to the floor
It’s still very obviously exuding Bad Vibes™ and doing this creepy whisper thing so of course wwx is like IMMA GRAB IT
OMG WWX STOP TOUCHING SCREAMING SWORDS
HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING JFC
Yeah so for some reason, wwx thinks it’s a good idea to touch the possessed sword and it starts screaming at him obvs and he starts to shake
Lwj is watching him all worriedly
The screaming seems to overwhelm wwx bc he’s flung back STRAIGHT INTO LWJ’S ARMS
Like, no hesitation. Lwj IMMEDIATELY catches him all tenderly as he falls
We cut back to the silence room with lwj at lqr’s bedside, checking his meridians/spiritual energy/whatever the hell
He’s very focused but all the juniors are cheeping at him like baby birds, it’s adorable
Except one of the juniors starts talking about the possibility of the yiling patriarch possessing someone and lwj opens his eyes and glares at him
HE GLARES SO HARD
AND ALL THE JUNIORS DUCK THEIR HEADS IN SHAME
Lwj dismisses them
Lwj: sizhui, go to bed
Lsz: but dad!!
Lwj: say no more, go
Lsz: yes father
I LOVE DADJI AND LSZ MOMENTS, I HAD TO INCLUDE THIS EXCHANGE
Lsz leaves and bumps into wwx who’s lounging casually outside that building. It’s night time. He’s dressed all in black. Wearing a mask. He looks sketchy af is what i’m saying.
Like, you choose NOW to wear a mask?? WHERE WAS THAT MASK EARLIER???
Wwx: are you okay, random junior that i’m fond of for some unknown reason?
And lsz opens up to him and starts being all Clever and talking Plot Points
Wwx is watching him puzzle this out and he’s so proud and impressed with lsz
Wwx: good analysis, it seems you’ve studied really hard!
More plot talk and then lsz is all why are you wearing a mask again?
Wwx: i’m afraid of being seen by some old friends…
“FRIENDS” LOLOL YEAH OKAY
Cut to a new scene. It’s morning time!
Lwj is staring longingly at wwx
Wwx: you’re not suspecting me are you? I’ve been sleeping for 16 years.
HELLO DENSE!WWX. CAN’T SAY THAT I’VE MISSED YOUR OBLIVIOUSNESS
HE’S OBVIOUSLY USING EVERY OUNCE SELF RESTRAINT TO NOT GRAB YOU AND KISS THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF YOU
Also, is this how he’s coping with being dead and resurrected? Pretending he took an extended nap?? this is a crowley approved coping mechanism, and i too approve of extended naps
Lwj: of course i believe you
Now they’re doing Plot Talk but we’re not gonna go into detail
Instead we’re going to enjoy their general proximity to each other and watch their pretty beautiful gorgeous faces as they bask in each other’s presence and talk smart with their wonderful voices
*dreamy sigh*
WWX IS BEING CLEVER
AND LWJ IS KEEPING UP WITH HIS CLEVERNESS
AND THEY REACH THE SAME CONCLUSION AND SAY IT OUT LOUD SIMULTANEOUSLY
BC THEY’RE GENIUS SOULMATES
(their conclusion has to do with Xue Yang and Plot Device 1 that may have something to do with Plot Device 2?? Only mentioning it vaguely bc it becomes relevant to wangxiantics later. We don’t need to know more than this lol)
Ooh, the end of their Plot Talk wwx says something about how whoever planted the sword ghost is obviously coming after him
Like, he realizes that he’s the target (presumably; i suppose it’s a reasonable assumption for him to make at this point). He stares off into the distance totally accepting of becoming the target again
But lwj gazes at him like OVER MY DEAD BODY IS ANYONE GONNA TAKE YOU AWAY FROM ME AGAIN, I JUST GOT YOU BACK!!
Maybe i’m projecting bc OVER MY DEAD BODY AM I LETTING ANYONE HURT MY PRECIOUS SUNSHINE BOY AGAIN,. COME OUT HERE AND FIGHT ME LIKE A MAN/WOMAN/NB PERSON
Now they’re back at the Underworld Chamber where the sword ghost (sans sword) is just chillin there and it’s all glowy and blue instead of smoky black.
Blah blah PLOT blah blah Follow the sword ghost blah blah Find sword ghost’s owner blah blah
Oh, and here lwj says they’re going on a trip together for Plot Reasons
Wwx is very excited about it. He hops and LEANS HARD into lwj.
Like, he’s putting weight into it guys, just getting all up close and personal with lwj’s strong sturdy shoulder~!
Wwx: i finally won’t be controlled by the strict rules here!
UM EXCUSE ME???
WHEN HAVE YOU EVER FOLLOWED THEIR RULES, WWX
WHEN
NAME ONE TIME
GO AHEAD, I’LL WAIT.
Lwj steps back slightly and wwx barely catches himself in time, it’s GREAT.
GUYS, OUR BOYS ARE TRAVELING TOGETHER AGAIN
ON A MISSION
TOGETHER!!
SIDE BY SIDE!
TO HUNT DOWN EVIL!
TOGETHER!!
JUST LIKE OLD TIMES BEFORE ALL THE ANGST AND TRAUMA HAPPENED!!!
Look at our boys! Together! In qinghe!! Qinghe brings back so many fond memories!
They go into town to explore
Lol, we meet a mountebank selling portraits of the yiling patriarch that are supposed to ward off evil
Wwx gets distracted by him and stays behind to chat while lwj keeps going
Wwx inspects the portraits and is SUPER DISAPPOINTED AND OFFENDED
THOSE PORTRAITS PHYSICALLY PAIN HIM
Wwx: the yiling patriarch was famous for his good looks! Who are these losers?? If you never saw the actual person, don’t draw randomly!! Stop misleading the younger generation! THEY HAVE TO KNOW HOW PRETTY I AM
Ah, poor wwx. Nobody can capture his beautiful perfect face.
SURPRISE JIN LING!!
ANGRY LITTLE BOY
KNOCKING DOWN THE POOR INNOCENT MOUNTEBANK
He’s all, that guy should be grateful all i did was kick him. I will kill anyone who mentions the yiling patriarch around me!!
Lol he’s such a brat, i love him.
Wwx: *internally* i wonder how his personality turned out this way. Poor temper, strong hostility. He learned all his uncle’s and father’s defects but none of his mother's strengths. If i don’t start working on him now, he’ll definitely suffer in the future…
LOOK AT WWX BEING A CONCERNED UNCLE!! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH
Except he hasn’t had much practice being an uncle so he brings up the time he pinned him to the ground with a talisman
Jin ling gets offended...
Aaaand here comes FAIRY THE WONDER DOG!!
Wwx hears the dog barking and making their way towards him AND FLIPS THE FUCK OUT
HE RUNS AWAY SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS
IT’S HILARIOUS
And we end on that high note.
Talk about emotional whiplash.
How can you make me want to tear my heart out of my own chest at the beginning and 40ish minutes later have me giggling like a loon??

Thoughts on 2018
No need for me to be fancier than that! And yeah I realize that nobody should be using Tumblr any more but until I figure out a proper revive of my old Wordpress site, this will do for now.
So anyway: I wrote this up for a private email list reflecting on the end of the year in terms of things I especially enjoyed culturally. Well, why not share it?
My year went very well — steady at work and in life, being 47 means more aches and pains but you have to learn to live with it. The state of the world is something else again of course and we need not spend more time on the blazingly obvious. That said, the history bug in me has been constantly intrigued by the slow drip of the investigations (and revelations) and were it all fiction, I’d be thoroughly enthralled instead of quietly apprehensive, of course. November did provide some partial relief on that front so bring on the new year. In terms of my own written work, nothing quite equalled my heart/soul going into last year’s Algiers feature for NPR, but my two big Quietus pieces this year — on Gary Numan’s Dance and Ralph Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings — were treats to write, while my presentation on the too-obscure Billy Mackenzie at PopCon was a great experience.
In terms of music this has been one of the most concert-heavy years I’ve spent. Even having moved to SF in 2015 I only did the occasional show every so often — there was so much going on (even in a local scene lots of long-timers say has been irrevocably changed) that I was almost spoiled for choice, and part of me also just wanted to relax most nights. But deaths like Prince’s and Bowie’s among many others served as a reminder that there’s no such thing as forever, and you never know what the last chance will be. More veteran acts than younger ones in the end for me — greatest missed concert regrets this year included serpentwithfeet, Lizzo, Perfume Genius and Emma Ruth Rundle among the younger acts, while being ill when Orbital came through will be a lingering annoyance, still having never seen them live. But the huge amount of shows I did see outweighed that, ranging from big arena stops like Fleetwood Mac to celebratory open-air free shows like Mexican Institute of Sound to small club sets by folks like Kinski, Six Organs of Admittance, Kimbra and many more, including, for the first time in years, a show in the UK, specifically a great performance by Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera. If I absolutely had to grade my top picks among shows, Cruel Diagonals, Johnny Marr, Wye Oak, Peter Brotzmann/Keiji Haino, John Zorn/Terry Riley/Laurie Anderson, Laurie Anderson again separately, Nine Inch Nails, VNV Nation, Jarvis Cocker, Beak and, in terms of no real expectations turning into utter delight and thrills, a brilliant set by Lesley Rankine under her Ruby guise, with Martin Atkins on drums. Best damn combination of righteous ire, hilarious raconteurism and compelling, unique approaches to how performance can work I’d seen in a while. (As for recorded music in general, uh, endless?)
TV, as ever a bit sporadic, with a few things on my to-do list — still need to catch The Terror for sure, and what I saw of The Alienist looked good; I love both books so I need to see how it all worked out, similarly with the just-dropped version of Watership Down. Pose I definitely need to catch up with since it sounds like Ryan Murphy stood out of the way to let the best possible team do the business on it, but my real unexpected delight of a show this year was also Murphy-based, American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. While not down the line perfect, it was absolutely more compelling than not, and in fact at its best was a shuddering combination of amazing music cue choices, a reverse structure that helped undercut any attempt at making Cunanan seem sympathetic or an antihero, and, at its considerable best, a ratcheting up of terror and horror that a friend said was almost Kubrickian, and I would have to agree. And, frankly, Darren Criss really did the business as Cunanan, a controlled and powerful turn. Only a few of us seemed to be following it at the time, but when it scored all those Emmys, then while it was as much a reflection of Murphy’s status, it honestly felt well deserved. Meantime, you’ll pry my addiction to all the RuPaul’s Drag Race incarnations from my cold dead hands but it’s the amazing online series that Trixie Mattel and Katya do, UNHhhh, which remains my comedy highlight of the year, with at least a few jaw-dropping/seize up laughing every episode. (Kudos as well for Brad Jones’s The Cinema Snob, ten years running online and still funny as fuck while digging up all kinds of cinematic horrors.) Also, tying back into music a bit, late recommendation for something you can only see on UK TV/streaming so far, but get yourself a VPN and seek out Bros: After the Screaming Stops, in which the two brothers in the late-80s monster hit pop band Bros (never had any traction here but pretty much owned the entire Commonwealth and beyond) try for a comeback. It’s an unintentionally hilarious and harrowing portrait of two twins who have a LOT of issues, have clearly been through a LOT of therapy, but are stillnot quite there. UK friends said it was a combination of Spinal Tap, Alan Partridge and David Brent and they were ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
Movies, less specifically to choose from — I remain an essentially sporadic populist when it comes to what I see in theaters, but I can say for sure that Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse is a hell of a thing and will almost certainly prove to be a real year-zero moment down the line. Possibly the most affecting watch was Bohemian Rhapsody, in that I also saw this in the UK — in Brighton, which besides making me think of the band’s song “Brighton Rock” is also notably the country’s most LGBT-friendly city; those I was with felt the movie’s themes, successes and flaws/elisions deeply, and the constant discussion of it for the next few days was very rewarding. As for books, John Carreyrou’s Bad Blood, delving into Theranos and the amoral duo behind it, was properly enraging and compelling, while Beth Macy’s Dopesick, if not perfect, nonetheless adds to the good literature on the opioid crisis, while as ever indirectly calling into question who’s getting the focus and care now as opposed to in earlier times and places. My favorite music publications as such probably remain the two I most regularly write for, The Quietus and Daily Bandcamp, while Ugly Things is the print publication that I most look forward to with each issue, and am never disappointed.
Podcasts now consist of a lot of my regular cultural engagement, kinda obvious but nonetheless true. Long running faves include My Favorite Murder — Karen and Georgia are an amazing comedy team who have figured out how to reinterpret their anxieties in new ways — The Vanished, which at its best often casts a piercing eye on how official indifference from law enforcement is almost as destructive as their more obvious abuses (recent discovery The Fall Line does this as well, even more explicitly), Karina Longworth’s constantly revelatory Hollywood histories You Must Remember This, Patrick Wyman’s enjoyable history dives on Tides of History, my friend Chris Molanphy’s constantly excellent investigations into music chart history Hit Parade, the great weekly movie chats by MST3K vets Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu along with Carolina Hidalgo on Movie Sign With the Mads, and The Age of Napoleon, which really has hit my history wonk sweet spot. New to me this year was It’s Just a Show, a really wonderful episode by episode — but not in exact order — deep dive into every episode of MST3K ever, by two fun and thoughtful Canadian folks, Adam Clarke and Beth Martin. (Adam also cohosts a new podcast, A Part of Our Scare-itage, specifically looking at Canadian horror. It’s not just Cronenberg!). Among the excellent one-off series this year: American Fiasco by Men in Blazers’ Roger Bennett on the failed US World Cup attempt in 1998, Dear Franklin Jones, a story about the narrator’s experience growing up in a California cult and how his parents came to be followers in the first place, and the Boston Globe’s Gladiator, their audio accompaniment to their in-depth story of the life and ultimate fate of Aaron Hernandez. Finally, totally new series this year that quickly got added to my regular listening: American Grift, a casual and chatty look at various scams and schemes, overseen by Oriana Schwindt, The Eurowhat?, a running look at the Eurovision competition throughout the year from the perspective of two American fans, and The Ace Records Podcast, an often engaging series of one-off interviews with various musicians, fans and so forth by UK writer Pete Paphides (I highly recommend the interviews with Jon Savage and Sheila B). Hands down my two favorite totally new podcasts of the year were The Dream, a more formal story of American grifting in general hosted by Jane Marie — this first season’s focus was on multilevel marketing, and Marie and company’s careful way of seemingly backing into the larger story makes it all the more compelling and ultimately infuriating, especially in the current political climate — and the hilarious Race Chasers, a RuPaul’s Drag Race-celebrating podcast by two veterans of the show, Alaska and Willam, loaded with all kinds of fun, behind the scenes stuff, guests and an easy casualness from two pros that strikes the perfect balance between going through things and just shooting the shit. Returning podcast I’m most looking forward to next year: the second season of Cocaine and Rhinestones, hands down. Check out the first season for sure.
And there ya go! Keep fighting all your respective good fights.

West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 8/25/17
In movie news, there was quite the controversial casting this week, as the color lines blurred for some comic book adaptations. First up, it was announced that English actor Ed Skrein would be portraying Japanese character Ben Daimio in the upcoming Hellboy reboot. Now, according to what I’ve read, Daimio’s Japanese heritage heavily influences the character, so this whitewashing of the character doesn’t seem to be in the best interest of the character. I mean, after the problems with whitewashing in Doctor Strange, Ghost in the Shell, Aloha, The Great Wall, and Ni’ihau, you’d think Hollywood would avoid shit like this. Yes, movies are made to make money, but it’s not like Skrein is a bankable star worth slotting into the role, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Usually this is done for the film’s STARS. Damon, Johansson, Stone. This is a secondary character, so it really wouldn’t have hurt them to seek out an Asian actor. Normally I’m just like “Well, Hollywood’s gonna Hollywood”, but this decision just doesn’t make a ton of sense.
Next up, 24: Legacy’s Anna Diop has been cast as Starfire in Warner Bros’ Titans series, slated to air on DC’s upcoming digital service. Some folks are saying they should’ve cast a Latina, but she’s gonna either be painted or CGied in orange, so it’s not like it’s gonna matter at the end of the day. Personally, if they wanted authenticity, I think they should’ve cast an actual orange alien princess. Right now there are just too many unknowns for me to get excited about this. I mean, DC announced the digital service without a lot of information. What’s gonna be on it? What will it cost? How much of the DC library will be available to be housed on it? As for Titans, this is the show TNT passed on. Ya know, the home of such illustrious shows as The Librarians and The Last Ship. I mean, they’re basically just about a notch up from what we got in the 90s from Universal’s Action Pack lineup. If Titans couldn’t fit anywhere on that schedule, then it probably just isn’t “ready for primetime” yet.
Speaking of aimless Warner Bros decisions, they announced 2 different Joker movies this week. First up is an origin tale, directed by Todd Phillips of Old School fame, and produced by Martin Scorsese. Hmm, one of those things is not like the other. I mean, why would Scorsese touch something helmed by the dude who gave us Road Trip? And who even WANTS a Joker origin story? First of all, it’s reportedly not even going to be part of the DCEU, so why confuse the audience with a story that won’t even really “count” in the grand scheme of things? Nobody needs a standalone origin of a take on a character they’ll likely never see again. This is just as foolish as Sony’s Don’t-Look-For-Spider-Man-To-Appear Venom movie. Next, the guys behind This Is Us (SO hot right now!) and Crazy, Stupid, Love are working on a Bonnie & Clyde-style Joker and Harley film, with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie reprising their roles from Suicide Squad. Since this would sort of negate the empowerment that Harley gained by the end of Squad, it’s believed that this actually means that the planned Gotham City Sirens film, also slated to star Robbie, is now dead. Honestly, I could do without either of these movies. I found Leto’s take on Joker to be…interesting, but Less is More with that character. Plus, I don’t really think the DCEU would be strengthened by this sort of movie. It’s not the world-building they need to be doing right now, as they haven’t even figured out the core of their star characters like Batman and Superman yet.
In TV news, Christopher Sebela’s comic Heartthrob has been optioned as a TV series by Felix Culpa – a production company launched by actress/Elvis’s granddaughter Riley Keough. Now, comics are optioned every day, and the final product never comes to fruition, but I hope this series sees the light of day. I’m actually a big fan of the comic, which is published by Oni Press. Set in the late 70s, it focuses on Callie, who’s received a heart transplant while the process is still in its infancy. Given a new lease on life, but still told she’s basically living on borrowed time, she decides to change her life when she meets Mercer, a charming guy with a shady side. She immediately falls for him, and he teaches her how to be bad, like rob banks and commit other crimes. She gets off on the rush. Pretty soon, however, she realizes that Mercer isn’t real. No, he’s actually the ghost of the guy whose heart is now in Callie. So, it’s a Bonnie & Clyde story where Clyde’s calling the shots from the afterlife. The book is published in “seasons”, so the first 5-issue miniseries wrapped up back in early 2016, while season 2 is hitting stores now. If you’re looking for a new comic not from the Big Two, I highly recommend it.

In music news, Taylor Swift did a whole social blitz to announce that her next album would be called Reputation, and would be released Nov 10th. On top of that, the first single was released last night, with rumors that the video will premiere at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. Ya know, the same awards hosted my Taylor’s enemy Katy Perry. Yeah, that should be pretty interesting to watch. Anyway, the new song is called “Look What You Made Me Do”, and I’m not too impressed. It lacks a real hook, while the chorus itself is basically spoken. I feel like it has all the ingredients for a great song, but it’s not living up to its full potential. If this is an indicator of what to expect on Reputation, though, I’ll admit I’m curious. It can’t be worse than Perry’s Witness.
youtube
Speaking of Katy Perry, we got the premiere of her video for “Swish Swish”, which was reportedly her diss track against Taylor Swift. After a lot of backtracking and sucking up, though, it seems Katy wants to put that feud behind her. That’s why this horrible video does everything it can to take the bite out of a song that was never really that biting to begin with. I mean, just look at it – Molly Shannon? Terry Crews? Even Nicki Minaj was clearly CGied in, as I’m sure she didn’t wanna be anywhere near this shitshow. The sad thing about the Perry/Swift feud is that Katy bailed on it the minute she realized the Swifties were a more powerful lobby than she had thought. Nobody was feeling her SNL performances, and Witness didn’t exactly fly off the shelves. She realized that she can’t really survive by making enemies, so suddenly she became conciliatory to save her ass. Plus, it’s kinda lame that this blood feud started just because Taylor stole a few of Katy’s dancers for her tour. Anyway, you’ll never get those 6 minutes back. You’re welcome.
I had the pleasure of joining my buddy Zac for his new podcast, The Zac Shipley Show. He’s treating these first few episodes as pilots for ideas he’s wanted to try, so our ep was called Streaming Pile, where we talked about the worst things we could find on streaming services. I talked about a Star Trek: Voyager episode where formerly perky pixie Kes returns all middle-aged and bitter. You should check it out, and give a listen to his other episodes while you’re there!
Song of the Week
youtube
I’ve been a big Maren Morris fan since she released “My Church”, and I was really into her next single, “80s Mercedes”. With this song she continues not to disappoint, as I love the groove on this thing. Listen to the bassline. It’s not a dance song, yet you can do a MEAN two-step to it. Hell, I think you could even do a casual version of The Hustle to it. This will definitely go to #1 given time.
Things You Might Have Missed This Week
NBC’s planned reboot of Xena: Warrior Princess – which would’ve featured a full-on lesbian relationship between her and Gabrielle – is officially dead, as they said “it didn’t warrant a reboot”. Man, if only other studios would realize this about some of their projects…
Director James Gunn mentioned in a Q & A session that the 3rd Guardians of the Galaxy film would set up the next 10-20 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yup, you’re just now realizing your own mortality. I’ll give you a minute to deal with that.
Speaking of Gunn, he’s attached to write the pilot for (and possibly direct) a reboot of 70s series Starsky & Hutch. This adaptation is supposed to be similar in tone to CBS’s upcoming S.W.A.T. and not comedic in tone like the 2004 Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson movie.
Surprising every critic in Hollywood, Netflix has renewed the maligned comedy Friends From College for a second season.
Known for controversial publicity stunts, Alamo Drafthouse is reportedly organizing a Clowns Only screening of the new adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
We got a new poster for Thor: Ragnarok. So many colors!
Michael K. Williams has reportedly been cut from the Star Wars Han Solo film, as Ron Howard’s reshoot schedule conflicted with another role that Williams had accepted.
There are, like, 8 different Knight Rider reboot treatments floating around Hollywood, but the latest rumor is that one of those productions is looking at John Cena as Michael Knight, with Kevin Hart as the voice of K.I.T.T. Of course, it would be a comedic adaptation, a la the popular Jump Street franchise.
Super Troopers 2, the sequel to one of the most overrated films I’ve ever seen, will hit theaters April 20th, 2018.
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson will star in Nasty Women, which is a female-led reboot of the Michael Caine/Steve Martin classic Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Independence Day: Resurgence‘s Jessie T Usher will star in Son of Shaft, with Samuel L. Jackson potentially reprising his role as John Shaft (from the 2000 reboot film), the nephew of the original John Shaft, played by Richard Roundtree, who is also in talks to join the movie. Man, that gave me a headache.
youtube
Always on the cutting edge, here’s Sesame Street’s parody of 2017’s song of the summer, “Despacito”
According to the creators, the Netflix series Stranger Things will most likely end after its fourth season
The actress formerly known as “Andrea Zuckerman”, Gabrielle Carteris, has been re-elected to a 2-year term as the President of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA)
Ryan Gosling will host the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Jay-Z, on Sept 30th.
Jamie Bell is developing a Jumper TV series, based on the 2008 film about teleporters
Suicide Squad 2 is reportedly being fast tracked, but I hope they fast track it right into the garbage. I mean, I enjoyed the first one, but I don’t need a sequel.
youtube
I like Nick Kroll, even though I never saw even a second of Kroll Show. Anyway, he’s got a new animated series about puberty called Big Mouth coming to Netflix and after watching this teaser I am ON BOARD!
We’re a month away from the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery, and it was revealed that it will be rated TV-MA, for Mature Audiences. Now, it doesn’t mean there’ll be tits and phasers, but it does mean they can tell more complex stories. That said, I still feel like they don’t truly understand the source material.
After a scathing essay from his ex-wife went public, accusing him of adultery and other generally shitty behavior to women, Joss Whedon went underground and the fan site, Whedonesque, shut down after 15 years.
youtube
We got a new teaser for Netflix’s The Punisher. With the rate I’m getting through these Marvel shows, I’ll probably get to it just before Evie goes off to Hogwarts.
There was a national solar eclipse this week, which was the first occurrence since 1918. I’m sure you might’ve heard something about it. It was kind of a big deal. Folks were pimping out special cardboard glasses on Craigslist for insane amounts of money, and the American President made news by looking directly into it. It seems that it had a strange effect on different folks. For example, Netflix viewership went down 10% as people went outside to view the phenomenon. Not everyone understood what was going on, bless their hearts. At work, a frantic parent called in and said “Y’all watching the news? You hear about this eclipse? Is it serious?!” Apparently she thought it posed some sort of danger to her kids and the school. No, ma’am. It’s just a beautiful sky ballet. Anyway, the eclipse was EVERYWHERE. I didn’t get to see totality, but it was still nice to stand outside for a bit on a nice day. What am I saying? I hate the outdoors! Well, it was nice to not have to work for a few minutes. You couldn’t escape the Eclipse Fever at the start of the week, so that’s why the Solar Eclipse of 2017 had the West Week Ever.

Random-News-Digest time everyone! It's the final one for the month of June. And yes, I admit that it's mainly published to address the recent update of a certain... game XD.
NOTE: This post hasn't been formerly proofread, so I have to apologize in advance. I'll get to that when I have the time, which might take a day or two, or even faster than that. Big religious holiday is supposedly starting later tonight, and although I'm not celebrating, for some reason I've always got caught up in the moment (can't actually get some rest due to the festive noise anyway. Gah!!!). And also, the internet has been rather slow thanks to that same reason. So there's that! (^^;) Proofread and minor updates completed on June 26th 08:10AM. See? Told you it'll take a while... XD
Star Wars
Big storm is brewing against the franchise! In an unexpected and perhaps unprecedented (for the franchise at least) turnaround, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are no longer attached to the "Han Solo: A Star Wars Story" (tentatively titled) movie, which is currently IN PRODUCTION! Nope, make that 'only a few weeks away from finishing the filming' stage. So it's more than halfway done. Unbelievable, right?
Creative differences is the diplomatic excuse as always, because well... this IS Hollywood. The duo even issued a statement with the cliché tune of "Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project", because well... cliché HOLLYWOOD. But it turned out the reason was a bit more personal than that. Apparently they had a clash of style and vision with Lawrence Kasdan (who's writing the movie's script with son Jon Kasdan) regarding the titular character's personality, an issue that was not backed by producer Allison Shearmur who's overseeing production in London. Since the long-gestating problem that has begun since day one of production couldn't be solved, they have practically been let-go (or fired, if you prefer the more blatant term). Rather blindsidedly too, some sources claimed. I'm not taking sides here, but honestly, if this was intended to be such a serious movie, I personally wondered WHY Lord and Miller were even hired. Considering their portofolio so far has been none other than comedy. No wonder there was a clash of tones there!
Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm immediately announced that there would be a replacement, with names like Ron Howard, Joe Johnston, and Kasdan himself being in the mix. And well, yesterday the studio has officially chosen Howard to take over Lord and Miller's directorial duty. A news that was met with mixed reactions, because while some were aware of Howard's superb Oscar-winning talent, many others have so easily forgotten all the critically acclaimed works he has delivered and... lamented this decision instead. Some even started complaining that the movie doesn't need to exist in the first place. LOL. That's our INTERNET people, get used to it! By the way, Howard is no stranger to the "Star Wars" franchise. He's an acquaintance of George Lucas, and had previously been approached to direct "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace". His hiring is said to be keeping up with "the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began 40 years ago", inspite of how old-fashioned it might be.
It's currently unclear if all the works that Lord and Miller have done since February would be scrapped and replaced anew, but since the issue stemmed from such fundamental ground, I feel many scenes will be redone in extensive reshoots during the Summer. Not unlike what happened with Gareth Edwards' "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" last year... which thankfully came out unscathed. For the record, this Han Solo movie starring Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, and Woody Harrelson is still scheduled for May 25th, 2018, so the studio might need to salvage as much footage as they can to fulfill the target date. As for Lord and Miller, there are rumors that they might get back to talking with Warner Bros about "The Flash". Not surprising, considering they DID write its original script, and left to do Han Solo. That poor superhero movie is pretty much a vacant production anyway, having lost directors over and over again. For the moment, there's no official confirmation about this. Heck they can even go back to working on sequel to "The LEGO Movie", right? We'll just have to wait and see.
Suffice to say, with this news, as well as the fact that Colin Trevorrow's recent movie "The Book of Henry" tanking both critically and financially... the Force is definitely NOT with the franchise. It makes good sense if fans are beginning to doubt that Trevorrow will wonderfully fulfill his duty as director for "Star Wars: Episode IX", the last of the modern/new-era trilogy. Not to mention, the firing of Lord and Miller might affect the franchise in terms of... behind the scene dealings. I'm not hyperboling here, but things are definitely not looking good. Then again, Lucasfilm managed to crawl out from risky situation before, as evidenced by "Rogue One", so perhaps this won't be a huge deal? I for once am glad that I'm not that invested in the franchise. But I'm aware that many nerds, and general audience out there care deeply enough for it to be more than just casually concerned. Let's just... hope the best and expect the worse. Okay?
Dark Universe
Another major franchise (if we can even call it that way, because it's still in infancy state for now) that has also become a major question mark, is none other than Universal and its modern Shared Monsters universe. Much were riding on Alex Kurtzman's "The Mummy" to jump-start the whole universe, but it sure didn't play out as planned. It wasn't the breakout hit that Universe was expecting. Nope, it was worse. It was already riddled with bad reviews prior to release, hence the opening numbers for the movie was underwhelmingly weak, and now it has plummeted 56% domestically in its second week. It's another "Ghost in the Shell" and "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" situation, folks! Not even a household name like Tom Cruise and/or Russell Crowe can do anything about it.
The good news is, it's doing better in the global market having passed the $600 million mark. The bad news? One would easily wonder if this is a good sign for Universal or not? After all, isn't this like... the "Dracula Untold" situation all over again? Will Bill Condon's "The Bride of Frankenstein" need to re-start the universe from scratch again? I'm honestly skeptical about it, but this is Hollywood we're talking about. A business that in general, couldn't care less about what its audience is thinking. Perhaps we should be doing that instead, then? Hmmm...
Mission Impossible
Speaking of Tom Cruise, he's currently filming the currently un-subtitled "Mission: Impossible 6". Aside from introducing Henry Cavill as a likely expendable member of the movie, director Christopher McQuarrie also personally confirmed several additions to the cast, old and new. Namely, the female cast who have joined series veteran Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, Sean Harris, and Ving Rhames for a 2-hours session with Cruise's Ethan Hunt (Jeremy Renner is busy with Avengers, so nope, he won't be around). Surprisingly, these gals consist of returning actresses Michelle Monaghan and scene-stealer Rebecca Ferguson, as well as new ones like Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, and Sian Brooke. That's like, twice the number of women compared to each previous installments! Who would've expected that we're getting a balanced gender in the 6th movie, and not just another sausage-fest, right?
McQuarrie is writing and directing the movie, and seemed proud with his extended cast. We still however, don't know much about it or the plot. I can only hope that this one will have a fresh story, that doesn't revolve in recycling has-been-plots. This franchise has that kind of unfortunate tendency, by the way. I'm not and never a fan of the movie series (I liked the TV better? Idk why), but it's totally commendable that it still has a good spark for another round. Heck, perhaps it might be turned into its own Shared Universe in the near future? LOL... Naah, I'm just kidding. But really, that might actually happen. I hope I didn't just jinx it...
Transformers
Reviews for Michael Bay's latest bombastic explosive robot-destruction-porn have hit the market, and well... should we even be surprised if they are BAD? Like... really BAD? "Transformers: The Last Knight" has even surpassed the Chinese-heavy "Transformers: Age of Extinction" by debuting in a... lower RottenTomatoes score. YIKES! 17% on RT, and 29 on Metacritic. Critics haven't been kind with the franchise, as evidenced by how they were torturing "Age of Extinction", but they weren't holding back with this one too. According to many, this one has even more bloated overstuffed plot, it's an overlong mess of badness, eventhough it has an ambitious screenplay and Mark Wahlberg giving his best as Cade Yeager's swan-song to the franchise. Some however, also said that it was bearable and would likely please its true fans no matter how bleak it might be. So... it's not for everyone, then? Hmmm...
In another NON-surprising news, Bay also announced that he's retiring from the franchise. AGAIN! Yes, I've even lost count how many times he had sworn these similar lines, but in an interview with Fandango, he just openly reiterated his intention. AGAIN. Hopefully for good this time, because I'm intrigued to see other directors taking their chances with this. I admit, I'm rather skeptical about his words though, because as I said, he kept on saying he's done with the franchise, only to jump back in while boasting his pride all over the place. It's like, a Decepticon knocked him out cold, and gave him amnesia every single time he finished making one movie! The bigger problem in the bigger picture though, we still have many more movies in the planning! I think it was 14 more scripts, right? I lost count as well. A Bumblebee spin-off has even been set to arrive next year as the beginning of this supposed Bay-less era. The logic here, is... do we really NEED more? It's a rhetoric question, by the way, don't bother answering. "Transformers: The Last Knight" is out since June 21st, so it should be crashing down in theatres near you as we speak *sigh*.
Jurassic Park
Well well well... title for the sequel to "Jurassic World" has been revealed! Announced through an official poster, the movie will now be called "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom". It's unclear what the 'Fallen Kingdom' actually means, although it somehow reminded me of... the 2nd Transformers movie. Which is not a good sign, considering the first "Jurassic World" made A LOT of money, but in a way, suffered through poor reviews by many critics. Will this franchise fall into the same category to Transformers? We'll see. "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" is set to arrive next year!
DC Films
"Wonder Woman" was the FIRST critically-good DCEU movie, so it's not even a surprise that WB is already planning a sequel. Once again, this IS Hollywood, people! Director Patty Jenkins and DC Comics and DC Films' Geoff Johns are currently collaborating for the treatment. Their goal is, "to make another great Wonder Woman film". The twist in this equation, Jenkins hasn't been officially signed to the project. Given the sudden recent development on "Star Wars" (which MIGHT carry Lord and Miller back to DC Film), this can mean anything. So it's unclear if she will or will not direct it, or just working behind the scene as writer and producer. Creative differences happen every now and then. But you know what? I'm more curious to how Johns can even manage to work on so many projects at the same time! Is he a cyborg, solely created for multitasking? He DID write "Vision" for Marvel Comics before... hmmm
Meanwhile, "The Justice League" is expected to have a new look now that Joss Whedon is in charge of the reshoot. Splash Report said that the movie have been overhauled by the studio not just once, but TWICE. This was seemingly evidenced by what happened after production was wrapped on October 2016. If it was done, how come actors like Jason Momoa subsequently had to cancel guest appearances and also postponed production for "Aquaman" just to do reshoots? And looks like it's not just an everyday reshoot after all, but a 'serious' and 'significant' one. Similar to what happened to "Rogue One" for half of its runtime, I say. The sources of this rumor said that WB didn't like what they were seeing, and commanded a rehaul. Big or small, it's none of our business, but surely, by now they have learned that messing around too much in the editing room could resulted into something equally awful. Like... last year's "Suicide Squad".
So as we speak, Whedon is likely working hard to change the team-up movie into something... better. Why would I blatantly said Whedon's name? Because Zack Snyder is no longer in charge, considering he and wife/producer Deborah have walked out since March due to personal family issue. Clearly, Whedon is solely in charge now, even if he's not given the credit he deserved (WB said the movie is still Snyder's no matter what). I don't know about you, but this situation suddenly feels eerily similar to the Lord and Miller, "Han Solo", and Ron Howard situation. According to random unconfirmed buzzes, Whedon has also been heavily involved in the DCEU. I don't actually know what that means, but it's probably similar to his previous overseeing-role for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Again, do take this with a grain of salt, because once again, no official word has been made about it. But you know what? I'm NOT surprised if that's indeed the case. Whedon had successfully created "The Avengers" in 2012, back when almost everyone in Hollywood thought a Cinematic Universe was a dumb idea. And now every studio want their share of a similar cake! It just makes perfect darn sense that WB hired Whedon to fix their DCEU, with the exchange of giving him freedom with his upcoming "Batgirl" project. I don't think it takes a genius to figure this one out. LOL.
X-Men Universe
At the same time, 20th Century FOX is also confidently moving forward with "X-Men: Dark Phoenix". True to the rumor, producer/writer Simon Kinberg is set to turn this into his first directorial project. All Most of the cast from that dreaded boring "X-Men: Apocalypse" are set to return. Wait... WHAT?!
Yep, that's quite a surprise indeed. I, among many others, thought that actors like Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and especially Jessica Lawrence were done with their roles. J-Law in particular, has publicly expressed her disdain to play Mystique like... over and over again. Not to mention, "Apocalypse" tanked critically (and also financially? I forgot about that one). But this is indeed happening folks, which means expect those three, as well as Nicholas Hoult to be reprising their respective mutant characters once again. Since the title obviously is a reference to the character Jean Grey, all the younger cast have been confirmed as well. Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan, and Kodi Smit-McPhee will be playing Jean Grey/Phoenix, Storm, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler once again. They are contractually-tied to the movie anyway. Hold on... where's Evan Peters? And... why aren't people talking about him? Will we not see his over-powered Quicksilver this time around then? Hmmmm... good riddance. Perhaps Taylor Swift is primed to take over his scene as the official... Dazzler?
Anyways, the studio is aiming big as always. After completely wasting and misuing the talent of one great Oscar Isaac, as well as the character Apocalypse that he was entrusted, now FOX is aiming for another big star to... probably ruin: Jessica Chastain! Yeess, the Oscar-nominated actress who had been approached by Marvel Studios before, has entered negotiations with the studio last week. She's the studio's top-pick to play the antagonist, Shi'ar Empress Lilandra Neamani. This is a character closely related to the alien-entity Phoenix, by the way. But knowing FOX, and also the hack that is Kinberg, I wouldn't bet too much on Liliandra to actually resemble anything she looked in the comics. She wasn't even a villain there, because it was her sister instead! Intriguingly, the Shi'ar is a Marvel Cosmic character. Does this mean, FOX is trying to have their share of the space opera-cake too now? Without even seeding hints towards it? That's FOX all right...
Seemingly, production is reaching the start of production in Vancouver, Montreal (marked by random set-photos on social media), eventhough Chastain hasn't even been locked. With an inexperienced director, a rushed production, a major storyline that has been done and sadly damaged before, and the level of CG necessary to pull of the scope? Those variables just don't add up. I've lost interest to this franchise a long time ago, so clearly I don't have faith in this one either. How they will even manage to achieve the November 2nd, 2018 release date is beyond me...
Speaking of production, "Deadpool 2" filmed scenes at the Hatley Castle Victoria, British Columbia. The place serves as a stand-in to Professor X's (which one? LOL) X-Mansion. True to his character, Ryan Reynolds sure didn't waste time to make fun of his fellow X-Men side. It's officialy the first set-pictures from the sequel! Also, Japanese actress Shioli Kutsuna has joined the cast in a key role. Perhaps, as the X-Men Hisako Ichiki/Armor or Noriko Ashida/Surge? "Deadpool 2", which is still a tentative-title (seriously, it's an epidemic!) will arrive on June 1st, 2018.
One last thing! Those Marvel fans who have been speculating that the copyright for "Fantastic Four" has reverted/been sold back to Marvel Studios... can now swallow their hopes and dreams in whole. As Kevin Feige has repeatedly stated (to which I'm scratching my head because nobody believed such an honest guy like him), this is NOT happening! And thankfully, we get an actual confirmation now, because FOX is... *drumrolls* set to make another movie! YIKES. YIKES. YIIIKEEESSSSS!!! Exaggerating response aside, this isn't that much surprising, since Kinberg had sung similar tune several times already. The failure of the really honest-to-God-really-BAD 2015's "Fant4stic" movie, as well as the whole backstage drama with director Josh Trank, apparently didn't stop FOX from further claiming their feet in this franchise. Because yeah, clearly they are only stalling time, trying to avoid the copyright from being reverted automatically to its rightful owner.
Third time's the charm, huh? Not so fast. This one won't be another reboot apparently, because it's going to focus on Franklin and Valeria Richard, a.k.a the chidren of Reed and Sue. Seth Grahame-Smith, the same guy who also walked out from "The Flash", is said to be writing a draft about this movie. Grahame-Smith was already involved in the 2015 movie to do some rewrites, so he's not necessarily a new name in the project. I'm not sure what to think about this, because I believe FOX has totally ruined this particular franchise. So much that I would really love to see Disney and Marvel Studios' take on the superhero family. Hey, it could be a live-action version of "The Incredibles", right? But the idea of focusing on Franklin and Valeria is intriguing nonetheless (assuming FOX can pull this off), because it might end up becoming a fun family movie like those "Spy Kids" series. Plus, they can easily use the same cast from the 2015 movie because they have aged now. But... that might be a wishful thinking. I still would rather see the copyrights revert back, so Marvel Studios can bring justice to, and have actual-legit fun with these characters in their upcoming Cosmic Universe. LOL.
SONY Marvel Universe
During the press junket with FilmStarts for the upcoming Spider-Man movie, producer Amy Pascal delivered a mindblowing statement that... in just seconds rocked the Marvel fanbase to their core. For better or worse, I say. When asked about SONY's upcoming plans for Spider-Man spin-offs, ones that Kevin Feige had openly said to be "a SONY Project", Pascal gave an arguably... contradicting answer. "Well those movies will all take place in the world that we are now creating for Peter Parker. They’ll be adjuncts to it, it may be different locations but it will still all be in the same world, and they will be connected to each other as well.", she said, ambiguously confirming that both Ruben Fleischer-directed "Venom" and Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed "Silver & Black" will exist in the same universe to Tom Holland's Peter Parker. Which means... the... MCU, right?! O_O... She even added that "There’s a chance [that Peter Parker will appear]. There’s always a chance. I think one of the things that Kevin has done with Marvel that was so brilliant is by bringing the fans along and making each movie seem like a chapter in a book, that you have to read that chapter in order to go forward. And I think the investment that the fans get to feel in being a part of a larger story and understanding what’s happening, I think is something that I know Sony would want to emulate.".
This small news, was immediately met with various kinds of reactions. Some was calling Pascal out to be a 'hack' who didn't understand what she's saying. On the other hand, others are calling Feige to be liar, especially due to how 'surprised' or 'confused' he looked upon hearing the words coming out of her mouth... which was followed by a mysterious 'smile' (Monalisa much?). And other variations of those. Want to know my immediate reaction? Allow me to share what I wrote on the 1st draft of this post: Okay, this must be a joke right? Or Amy Pascal is confused or mixed up about something? Because that means SONY is messing around with the MCU! And I'm not too sure I would like that. It's bad enough that Marvel TV division is already chipping away potential characters from ever being used in the big screen, now this. Isn't that like, overstepping much? If anything, this gives Avi Arad an access to mess around in the MCU. And also, not only the Earth-based but the cosmic side through Venom as well.
Ignoring my personal-beef with Marvel TV aside, nor my natural grumpy bed-side manner (what can I say, I've been in a bad mood lately. LOL), that WAS indeed my response when I first read the news a few days ago (earlier this week in fact!). Of course I've calmed down ever since, and managed to carefully assessed the situation with a cool head. Nope, there aren't any official confirmation or clarification so far, from neither SONY nor Marvel Studios. But many sites have chimed in with their take on the matter, and well... it's starting to make sense. The way I see it, neither Pascal and Feige are spreading lies. They are only speaking in their own personal style and gesture. So we can't really take their words or sudden expression at face value. Collider and Marvelous Realm pointed out the generalising word 'adjunct' that Pascal used. As Birth.Movies.Death pointed out, Feige is a man of diplomatic answer, and had always refuse to give out unnecessary information when it's not needed. Pascal on the other hand, is spontaneous and her role is to help sell her own studio... SONY. A studio who by the way, had also stated that "Venom" and "Silver & Black" are NOT connected to the Peter Parker movies. But she wouldn't be talking like that without having prior discussion about it, right? If we look at it closely, Pascal herself NEVER stated that those movies would be part of the MCU. That's not how their collaborative deal is happening anyway. In a way, this is a situation that rhymes a bit in comparison to Marvel TV's Netflix series, or their other non-ABC projects. Once again, as I've said over and over again, the arrival of 2016's "Doctor Strange" helped Marvel Studios to expand their universe into a Multi-verse state. So perhaps, speculatively-speaking... that's exactly what's happening with the SONY Marvel Universe, right? That it's part of the MCU, just not in the same realm to The Avengers?
The Hollywood Reporter's thorough piece about the relationship between SONY and Marvel Studios, surprisingly shed some hidden lights about the SONY movies too. Apparently, SONY is also working on projects that will focus on Sergei Kravinoff a.k.a. Kraven the Hunter, and Mysterio. As if we don't get enough villain-based movies, Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock is set to take on (if not feature) another Spider-Man's symbiote antagonist: Carnage! According to Omega Underground (via ComicBook.com), the R-rated movie will begin production on September 1st for the October 5th, 2018 release date, and is set to film in Atlanta and New York City. Meaning it won't be long before we get to know who will play the totally-NOT-PG13-character sociopath murderer Cletus Cassidy. "Silver & Black" is also eyeing for a Fall start. A rumor detailing the movie's possible plot has also been flying around the internet. For the record, the source's credibility is questionable, particularly because it includes several characters like Jessica Drew and Dominic Fortune that might not even be SONY's to begin with. It also introduced many names from the Spider-Man lore, like The Scorpion, The Chameleon, and Norman Osborn... that somehow sounded a little too good to be true.
For now, Tom Holland isn't attached to any of these movies, but the intention of SONY is clearly to do so. And I hope that's indeed the case, because it probably would give me a slight of interest to see it. To be honest, I'm still mulling over the fact that SONY is going to flesh out amazing villains like Kraven, Mysterio, the Symbiotes, and many others, robbing their connection to a Spider-Man. I personally would love to see Holland's Spider-Man taking on these characters as PART of the MCU, not the other way around. I'm still happy that at long last, those names have been reconsidered for a big-screen feature, because as disappointed as I've been to realize that Hardy won't ever be portraying Kraven now, we DO need to see a "Sinister Six" movie somewhere in the future, right? But on the other hand, the absence of quality control from Marvel Studios is undeniably concerning. Don't forget, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach practically ruined Venom in "Spider-Man 3", and other characters like Goblin and Electro in the consequent follow-ups. Which leads me back to the most nagging question: Is the SONY Universe thing REALLY a good idea? Will its movies be enjoyable and not disappointing like those "The Amazing Spider-Man" series? Hard to tell. Somehow its future is still looking dark and cloudy to my curious eyes...
Marvel Studios
You've seen that official first teaser for "Black Panther" that arrived two weeks ago, right? Yes, I'm sure you have. I've always thought that Marvel Studios is keeping wrap Ryan Coogler's movie for a grand debut in San Diego Comic Con next month. Turns out it arrived much earlier than I have anticipated. Am I disappointed though? Of course NOT. It looked grand like its poster, amazing like any Marvel Studios' releases, gloriously and explosively epic, and character-focused (if that new synopsis is any indication). And surprising too, because it was much more colorful than I expected!
I honestly didn't expect the costumes to be so... vibrant. But as it turns out, the designs for those bright red, dashing yellow, lush green, and navy blue outfits were completely inspired by actual African culture. Which is of course AMAZING, because I got to learn new things from it. I can already expect a nomination in the Costume and Production category in the next Oscar race. Yes, Production too, because the fictional country of Wakanda itself is also looking grand. A combination of African culture and high-tech, this country looks and feel like Thor's Asgard that takes place on Earth. A hidden utopia! Also, we got plenty of women in action thanks to the Dora Milaje! Lupita Nyong'o strutting as Nakia in a casino, Florence Kasumba's Ayo kicking people's behind with a tonfa, and Danai Gurira as Okoye who seems to be serving as Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa's right hand. And then there's Angela Bassett who's rocking grey hair as Queen Ramonda, Letitia Wright's Science-Princess Shuri with Panther-shaped Iron Man-style gauntlets, and singer Nabiyah Be as Tilda Johnson who is connected to Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger. Johnson's name might be unfamiliar in the mainstream, because she's a character best known as the supervillain Nightshade. Oh, and also don't forget returning actors Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis as Everett Ross and Ulysses Klaue respectively. Sure, it would've been great to see some Asian tone, but at least the two added some colors to an otherwise African-American cast.
Executive Producer Nate Moore, who also worked on the last two Captain America movies, talked to Complex and shed some details about the movie. He confirmed that "Black Panther" takes place right after the event of "Captain America: Civil War", and that the untimely passing of John Kani's T'Chaka will serve as the catalyst for the plot. In a sense that, T'Challa himself wasn't automatically a King and had to prove himself, while internal threat presumably coming from Killmonger will challenge that notion. Chiming in to Kevin Feige, Moore reiterated the studio's goal to "tell the best stories with the strongest developed characters and scripts" they can work on, and not to rush something that's not ready or not according to their standard. Particularly when asked about the issue of diversity, to which he kindly compared to the "Fast & Furious" franchise. "I think an upshot with Marvel is that our characters and brand are both big enough where we’re not limited to just using actors and actresses who’ve done a ton of movies. We work with big name actors but we’re not under the pressure of saying that we have to work with, say, Matt Damon or Will Smith, or no one’s going to want to see this new idea. Hollywood is a bit agnostic as far as race and gender. They’re just trying to get as many people as possible to see movies so they just want faces that get people into seats, frankly. And because there aren’t as many roles for people of different ethnicities, you tend to see a lot of guys like Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio who are super talented, but who maybe aren’t as diverse as other actors out there.", he said, negating the practice that has recently been done by other studios like Universal with their Dark Universe, or WB with DC Films.
As for the future, the studio is always thinking ahead, but in a limited capacity as things evolve naturally. He admitted that they are "finishing up what we call Phase 3, which will sort of end with the fourth Avengers film in 2019. And then I think for us, we continue that conversation of, what’s next? Who will be the new heroes who can tell great new stories and bring us to new worlds that we haven’t even had a chance to visit yet, while still expanding on the slate of heroes we have and finding the next step for characters people have come to love? We’re looking for the next best story. And then we let the story tell us what we should be making as part of that one united narrative in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.". Once again putting focus on the story first and not just trying to make the MCU continue rolling. And what kind of stories? One that would please the fans. Because for the studio, fans are "the forefront of our minds when we talk about development. What does our audience want and how do we give it to them in a way that’s unexpected? What do they want to see? What can we show them that they don’t know they want to see, but that we think they’ll really respond to? And a big part of that is plunging into new worlds with characters that offer a different flavor than what people are used to. Those are the stories that we want to explore.". An attitude that so far hasn't been taken as good lesson by other studios.
"Black Panther" will arrive on February 16th, 2018. Considering that's less than 3 months prior to "Avengers: Infinity War", it's clear that the movie's going to be have some set-up towards that ensemble movie. While Chris Hemsworth is seemingly having a fun time on set on Instagram, Boseman posted a video showing that Chris Evans' Steve Rogers and Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff will be filming a scene with him that's set in Wakanda. This hinted at the possibility of the Secret Avengers' members visiting Wakanda to request T'Challa's aide. Some members of the "Black Panther" cast (Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright) have even been confirmed to reprise their roles. which makes sense, really. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Johansson stated that there's going to be a scene consisting around 32 characters. It wouldn't be a surprise to expect the representatives of "Black Panther" to be part of that big ensemble. Heck, even Iron Man and Hulk might have already shared a scene with Doctor Strange and Wong!
Actress Hannah John-Kamen has joined the cast of "Ant-Man & the Wasp" in what Variety called as a key role. John-Kamen is a rising star, and her ethnicity comes into mind with what Moore had stated in regards of diversity. But what character could she be playing? Young Janet van Dyne? Or another female antagonist for the MCU, which might sound a bit offensive for her background? I bet we're going to hear more details about her role pretty soon, since the movie will begin production in Pinewood Studios Atlanta, under working title "Cherry Blue" next month, after the 4th of July holiday. That's less than two weeks away from now, folks! According to information on OmegaUnderground, this production will run concurrently with Avengers 4, which will commence production on July 17th under working title "Mary Lou 2". This clearly hints that Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne will eventually join the ensemble movie like many fans have hoped, along with Brie Larson's Carol Danvers. After all, her "Captain Marvel" is also expected to begin production in the same location, from January to May 2018 under the working title "Warbird".
Can you believe it? Those three are the FINAL three movies of Phase 3. Which means, the end is near. For the 3rd Phase that is, because somewhere out there writer/director James Gunn is already hard at work to deliver the next iteration for Guardians in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3". A movie that will mark the beginning of the Marvel Cosmic Universe. It's unclear what shape it will take though. Does that mean introducing new heroes like Nova and others? Or can we expect members of the existing team, like perhaps Rocket Raccoon and Groot to star in their own separate title? During E3 2017 World Building Panel, Gunn admitted that he has completed the first draft of "Vol. 3", but apparently, it comes with an issue. Namely, a retconning issue. Gunn specifically pointed out the mugshot scene from the first 2014 movie, causing many sites to speculate that it has anything to do with Rocket, Lady Lylla, and his Halfworld origin. Since Gunn is prone to debunking false rumors/speculations, and this time around he's not saying anything... it's safe to assume that there might be some truth to it. Then again, this is just the first draft! Even Adam Warlock got kicked out from the first draft of "Vol. 2", right?
Enough about the future, and let's talk about the... near future. As in what's coming in the next weeks. About "Spider-Man: Homecoming", of course! Obviously, its World Premiere is coming, because early social media reviews for the movie have officially arrived a few hours ago! Nope, let me correct that. It started a few days ago. Apparently, some early screenings have been held, and one of its particular audience is the nice guy I've been following on Twitter. And should I be surprised that it's... AMAZING? Well... duh, that's what you get when you let Marvel Studios work on it, right? While he had since ranked it under "Logan" and "Wonder Woman", he didn't hesitate to compare it with "Spider-Man 2" that has been his all-time favorite. His response rhymed really well with Robert Downey Jr.'s statement on his Facebook account, so it's indeed a good sign.
And just earlier today (local time, meaning last night in the US), social-media embargo for critics have been lifted, and they have been tweeting their official responses ever since. And well, they are singing the same tune! Here's a glimpse of what they say (in list form... because I love lists): - Collider's Steven Weintraub simply LOVED it. He said that the movie was "Tons of fun". Mike Ryan of Uproxx added that it's an absolute delight. - Germaine Lussier of Gizmodo/io9 compared it to "Spider-Man 2", calling it close to the Sam Raimi's movies. He also added that the movie had several genuine surprises, while exuding young innocence that differentiate it with other MCU movies. Others like William Bibbiani of CraveOnline thought it was fluffier than the Raimi's though, because the drama is thin. - Some critics, like Sean O'Connell of CinemaBlend and Brandon Davis of ComicBook.com easily called it their new favorite Marvel movie. Davis even added that it's endless fun and flawless. - Chris Sylvia of RegalMovies reminded that it's also a good High School movie while calling it his favorite Spider-Man movie to date. Angie Han of Mashable also said that it balanced superheroism and high school drama nicely. - Kristy Puchko of Nerdist, Vanity Fair, and ComicBookResources praised Michael Keaton as an amazing antagonist, even compared him to Tom Hiddleston's Loki. Jeff D Lowe, social media producer of Good Morning America also said that Keaton is fantastic, saying that his character is a great villain with depth. - And of course, praises are being sung for Tom Holland's performance. Molly Freeman of ScreenRant said that he's definitely the best Peter Parker so far. Erik Davis of Fandango called it spot-on casting and spot-on Spidey, while Matt Singer of Screen Crush gave him thumbs up. That all sounded positive, so I don't think it would take long for the 1st Rotten Tomatoes score to generate, right? Let's just hope that unlike the questionable posters, word of mouth will help boost the movie's appeal, and it will exceed the $100 million estimated opening number (which has already gone lower since previous tracking).
That whole talk concerning the state of SONY Marvel Universe also shed some light to the production of this movie, and what's to come. It's revealed that SONY's new head Tom Rothman, is betting high on it to kickstart their own Cinematic Universe. With the budget of 'mere' $175 million, it was unveiled that "Homecoming" is totally taking the Marvel Studios method of "Keep costs down on the first two outings and spend bigger on a third". The movie was intentionally made to replicate the John Hughes-vibe, and those who have seen it said that director Jon Watts and his young actors (who went on a picnic together for some fun real-life bonding time) delivered that promise. Michael Keaton is only signed to play Vulture in this movie, so it's unclear whether he'll be reprising in the sequel or as part of "Sinister Six" in the future. And speaking of sequel, we can expect NO Iron Man in it, because there will be another to-be-determined Marvel Studios character instead. Doctor Strange and/or Hulk comes to mind, Captain Marvel, even Charlie Cox's Daredevil since Feige had indeed stated that a crossover with Marvel TV will eventually be inevitable. But perhaps... an original character? Here's hoping it will be hinted in the movie's post credit scenes.
Lastly, be sure to check out SDCC 2018 next year, because Marvel Studios will be releasing a special 10-year Anniversary logo. Darn it, it's almost 10 years already! Time flies by soooo quickly...
Marvel TV
Freeform's Marvel's "Cloak and Dagger" won't be arriving until 2018, but according to SpoilerTV it has quietly been renewed for second season. They said the production will begin next month and ends in October. Now this sounded a bit odd, since last we heard, they've only completed the pilot in February. Is this report accurate, or is SpoilerTV merely making a mistake when they were meant to refer to the rest of the Season 1? We'll have to wait for further news to clarify this.
Netflix
In case you're forgetting, Marvel's "The Defenders", Marvel TV's FIRST-ever (yes, unbelievable right? What took them so long?) crossover between their series is coming in August. It's easy to lose track about it, since the marketing has been swept away by coverage for "Homecoming" as well as other big-screen titles. Not saying they aren't promoting this mini-series though, because very recently the official Twitter accounts of the four core heroes have released motion posters to remind audience and Marvel fans of their existence. Charlie Cox's Matt Murdoch was obviously the first, followed by Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter's Luke Cage, and Finn Jones' Danny Rand. Each carrying their own tagline and personal swagger, before culminating into a catchy foursome poster.
No offense, they looked COOL, but... I don't know. Perhaps Marvels "Iron Fist" had given such a negative after-taste, that I no longer anticipate this mini-series as much as before. No reason to be worried since Scott Buck is not doing it, but... likely I'm already feeling tired of waiting too darn long to see this happening. As I said above, unlike the movie side, Marvel TV is burning me out so much faster than I've expected, I ended up developing some beef against them. With that said, I WILL be watching this mini-series, but that's likely as far as I'll go for the Netflix side. I'll likely even give Jon Bernthal's Marvel's "The Punisher" a huge pass when it arrives later in November. Not saying these series are bad, but... the dark, gritty, and gruesomeness are seriously wearing me down. Oh well... to each their own, I guess. Marvel's "The Defenders" arrive on August 18th, 2017.
DC Television
I'm not a fan of "Watchmen". When Zack Snyder made a movie version of the 1985's series back in 2009, it made me cringed. The whole nudity revolving Doctor Manhattan, and that unnecessary extended intimate scene between Nite Owl and Silk Spectre were... disturbing for the then-young version of me (still do though LOL). Then again, that's probably just me not digging Snyder's style, so probably not the series' faults. I also understand that many people are loving this series, and since this is the Golden Age of superhero adaptations, should we even be surprised to hear that another version is coming? Yes, this time in form of a TV series. According to Variety, Damon Lindelof is currently in talks with HBO to develop such series. HBO had tried to do so in 2014, but it didn't pan out, so there's no reassurance if this time it's going to be... better. No confirmation so far from HBO, but I'm sure we'll be hearing about this in the near future. Same question though: Is this a good idea? I seriously can't say. Perhaps it is, perhaps it might be great and I end up liking it. But at the very least, this is a good news for the series' devoted fans! There's one for everyone, right?
Super Sentai
Long time Tokusatsu scooper Dukemon, has revealed the possible rumor to the upcoming Super Sentai series. Yes, "Uchu Sentai Kyuranger" is still airing, and it's not even halfway done. But projects like this usually takes 2 years in advance to work on, so it's not a surprise. According to Dukemon, the 2018 season/team will once again be Car-based, particularly to celebrate the 10th anniversary of "Engine Sentai Go-Onger". A team-up with its members is also in the rumor mix. Now I can't say for sure whether I like this or not. I'm probably among the few weirdos who LOVED Go-Onger and their talking Enjins (basically the team consists of 19 members because of them and Bomper), but another Car-themed series feels... redundant somehow. Sure, it's easier to pull off for the mecha/toys design. But unless it has other meaning to differentiate it (like "Kyukyu Sentai GoGoV" with the whole Rescue-theme, or "Go Go Sentai Boukenger" with the adventure/expedition angle), we've seen too many of those already. Of course, Tokusatsu is a genre that LOVES to rehash popular themes, just like they do with story tropes in a yearly basis, so it's not out of the realm of possibility to see them going back to vehicles. Oh well... here's hoping we'll be getting a "Go-Onger 10 Years After" V-Cinema too. With the way the series ended, I would LOVE to see the cast reunites. Beside, all if not most of them are still active in the entertainment business anyway.
DuckTales
Now THIS is a series I'm going to be watching. Hearing that modern version of the classic theme song alone, complete with the various swashbuckling adventure scenes of the characters... already got me fired up for no particular reason! Perhaps, the effect of nostalgia-blast? Granted, I never actually watched the original series religiously, because I didn't have the means to do it. But now that I can, I'm going to give this show a chance. Sure, the character design and art-style might need some time to get used to, and yes, I'm still taken aback by the non-Donald-esque voices for the nephews (especially knowing that "Parks & Recreation" annoying Jean-Ralphio is voicing one of them). But the six Short-Episodes I've seen so far, were enough to convince me that this is going to be great. And that Launchpad is still my favorite character of the show. LOL. Here, check out this First Look trailer on Youtube if you don't believe me...
A one-hour episode/movie for "DuckTales" is set to embark David Tennant's Scoorge McDuck's adventure with Tony Anselmo's Donald Duck, as well as the three nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie (Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, and Bobby Moynihan). It will premiere on August 12th, 2017, which will then be followed by the series regular run starting in September 23rd. That date is the 30th anniversary of the original series, and will bring two brand new episodes. The series will also star Kate Micucci as Webby Vanderquack, Beck Bennett as Launchpad McQuack, Toks Olagundoye as Mrs. Beakley, as well as featuring special celebrity guest stars. We have Lin-Manuel Miranda as Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera/Gizmoduck, Allison Janney as Goldie O’Gilt, Margo Martindaleas as Ma Beagle, Paul F. Tompkins as Gladstone Gander, Kimiko Glenn as Lena, Jim Rash as mad scientist Gyro Gearloose, Josh Brener as tech billionaire Mark Beaks, Keith Ferguson as Flintheart Glomgold, Eric Bauza as the Beagle Boys, and Corey Burton as Ludwig Von Drake. This already sounds MORE than just fun, am I right?! XD
The King of Fighters
Chinese-produced series "The King of Fighters: Destiny", has released its second official trailer. This one is more story-oriented, and well... gotta admit, the more I see it, it does grow on me. From what I gather, while Kyo Kusanagi can be seen sensing the arrival of the Orochi, the bulk of the story will focus on the Fatal Fury Trio's beef with Geese Howard. Geese killed Terry and Andy Bogard's father Jeff, and so the brothers, alongside Joe Higashi will attempt their revenge to the guy who is ruining Southtown. I was a bit skeptical when I first saw Geese's right-hand Billy Kane, but he looked okay now. Particularly after seeing him wearing his iconic Union Jack headband. There's a special clip showing Terry, Andy, and Joe dealing with Billy and his henchmen, and it looked nice. A press conference video, also confirmed the appearance of iconic female characters like King, Mai Shiranui, Yuri Sakazaki, Athena Asamiya, and others, though I'm not sure casting BEJ48 idols as their voice actresses is a wise choice. They should've hired the respective voice cast from "The King of Fighters XIV" instead. Of course, I'm going to check this series anyway. I just hope it exceeds my expectation, and that this would be good, because we all know that video-game adaptations don't really have good reputation...
Tomb Raider
Possible title for the next Tomb Raider game has probably been revealed. Rumored at least, courtesy of NeoGAF. Some artworks by the title of "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" have seemingly been leaked via an entertainment marketing company. Further adding credential to this rumor, was the fact that the images have since been removed by the website. If this rumor is true, then it seems Lara Croft will be exploring Egyptian Pyramids once again, which is a really nice decision. We'll just have to wait and see if this rumor pans out or not. So take it with a grain of salt for now...
Dynasty Warriors
Koei TECMO has debuted the first official trailer for their open-world "Dynasty Warriors 9 / Shin Sangoku Musou 8". The footage will undoubtedly thrill fans of the series, while also teasing the updates the company has given to this iteration. Koei TECMO weren't kidding when they said that it's meant to be "the most immersive and ambitious Dynasty Warriors experience to date" because it sure looked that way. Having been converted into a fan over the past years, I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to see this game come to shape.... even if I won't be able to play it, since it's likely a PlayStation 4 exclusive. There's no fixed 2018 release date for now, but expect details about the game and its 83-plus characters to be delivered in the near future.
Professor Layton
Following details for the second episode that was unveiled during E3 2017 last week, LEVEL-5 has debuted the official second trailer for "Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires' Conspiracy". This one previewed the main stories of the game, and also unveiled the looks of all titular seven millionaries in cinematic motion. With only four of them detailed for now. Those who were worried that this title might look and feel different to the previous Layton titles thanks to a female protagonist, can rest assured now. It feels just like another chapter in the Layton storybook. Heck, even the great Herschel Layton himself made a cameo appearance in this trailer! Just look at Katrielle and his dad, and tell me you didn't go... "Aaaaaaww".
Also, in an exceptionally clever marketing to commemorate the game's release, LEVEL-5 collaborated with real escape game creators SCRAP for a "Real World Puzzle Solving" campaign. It's a free to play experience that is accessible to anyone worldwide! There will be 50 puzzles released on the internet one by one from June 20th to September 21st. The first one has famous Japanese entertainer Pikotaro doing a puzzling-rendition of his "Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen" song. It's available on Youtube, if you don't believe me. That particular puzzle is pretty easy, but the next one? You're going to need a paper and pen to figure out the message. And not just that, the question will also direct you to 15 different websites hosting clues in form of another puzzle. How THRILLING is that?! Go ahead and visit Layton.world to test it out, because once again, the treasure hunt is free for play! "Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires' Conspiracy" arrives on 3DS in Japan, and iOS and Android worldwide on July 20th.
Zero Escape
Spike Chunsoft released an official trailer for PlayStation 4 version of "Zero Time Dilemma" last week. The point of this trailer is clearly to give us a glimpse to how the game would look in PS4. I'd argue that it's not that much different to the PC Version, but it does have some minor details like shading and such that somehow looks... clearer. This is a good chance for those who have played the first two games (or the recently re-released "Zero Escape: The Nonary Games"), but hasn't had chance to experience its third. Assuming you own a PS4, of course, LOL. "Zero Time Dilemma" will be released on August 17th in Japan, and Fall in North America.
Final Fantasy
Square Enix has officially released the trailer for "Final Fantasy XV" next DLC, "Episode Prompto". You can check it out on Youtube. If the E3 2017 footage showed the gameplay of his solo adventure, then this one is focused more on the story... which of course is all about his unexpected origin. This DLC will launch several days from now, on June 27th, 2017. Here's hoping the Final Fantasy fans will receive this much better than Gladio's.
Street Fighter
CAPCOM has rolled out a Season 2.5 patch, and an alleged leak about future updates immediately floated in the internet. This report, assuming it's accurate, said that data miners have found signs of future DLCs and new game mechanics among other things in the patch. The character DLCs, which are now speculated to be coming as Season 3, consisted of 6 additional characters that should make many fans happy. Fan-favorites Sagat, Sakura Kasugano, Oro, C. Viper, Q, and Necro are all mentioned to be on this list! Admittedly, this isn't that much surprising considering most of them (with the exception of Sagat and Q) have already appeared in various Story Modes since the game was first released.
The leak also include the existence of second Critical Arts for all characters, an Arcade Mode, and also a second Cinematic Story expansion. And now suddenly it sounds a little too good to be true *sigh*. Now remember, take this with a grain of salt. This could be real, or a deliberate ruse by fans to force CAPCOM to eventually turn their wishlist into reality. Especially considering, as far as I know, the 2nd Season DLC (Akuma, Kolin, and Ed, with three others remaining) hasn't been received as well as expected. But if CAPCOM is true to their words of saying that "Street Fighter V" will be the only version of its generation (so there will be no 'Super', 'Arcade', or 'Ultra' upgrade), it can very well be true...
Pocket Monsters
Yeah, this is the reason why I'm posting this R-N-D! To be precise, WAS the reason, because it was initially scheduled to go up yesterday. Following the subjectively-disappointing Solstice Event, Niantic has begun rolling out update for "Pokemon GO" in terms of their new Gym system, and it is... well, elaborate, to say the least. I wanted to say 'Complicated', but I've slowly warmed up to it that it's no longer a suitable term. The transition had started on June 19th (local time) with Gyms throughout the world being closed down (which made the App looked somewhat-eerie, to be honest), and was officially implemented as soon as the extended Solstice Event (for another 24 hours until June 21st, 1 PM PST) ended.
Gyms have been reactivated since yesterday's morning (I know, because I've clearly experienced it myself), and new feature called Raid Battles have been made available for Level 35 above later in the afternoon. Today, many users have reported that the Level warning has been lifted, and those with lower levels than 35 has even obtained their daily Raid Pass. Niantic confirmed through an official announcement, that Raids are available for 'Level 25 above' now. This confirmed that the limitation was purely for Beta Testing, and thus the feature will be rolled out for even lower levels in the future.
Calling this a major update would be an understatement. Those who are in the game purely to collect Pokemons might not be majorly affected, but those who relied on Gyms to farm PokeCoins and such will definitely need to learn from scratch. Practically, it has altered the way Gym-goers going to behave. This update changed the whole pattern of the Gym System, forcing Players old and new to adjust their gameplay. And of course, this gave me mixed reaction. Here's what came in the update, along with my thoughts on them (once again, in list form):
- Let's start with the simple touches! A handy Search Function in the Pokemon Collection screen has been added! This is well appreciated, as now we don't need to waste time scrolling down the long list just to check/compare our Pokemon. It also works for searching based on Types or species. So when we enter the word 'Fire', the result will feature every Fire-Types on our list, and if we enter the word '+eevee', every Pokemon related to Eevee including its evolutions will show up. Convenient! There's a marker on PokeStops now, indicating which one we haven't spinned for the day. This is small, but also convenient! - Having Photo Disc on Gyms that unlock items is a wise decision, because that means the game now has more PokeStops than before. Standing by near a Gym feels rewarding now! And in return, the same is happening to PokeStops with some of them being turned into Gyms. This helps give access to wider-range of Players who usually can't participate in Gyms because of their limited occurence. - I'm really happy to see that one species of Pokemon can only be assigned once, and the improved UI allows us to see the team of Pokemon lining up together like badasses. Also, they are no longer sorted by CP. It's a first-come first-served situation now, which admittedly sounds more fair to low level users. Yes, many users are complaining to the fact that Gyms can only contain 6 Pokemons now, but they seem to be forgetting that it's the maximum number of PokeBalls a Player can bring in the core RPGs. So it's still a great nod! - Trainers also felt more incorporated, as we can see their in-game silhouette decorating the Gym's backdrop and/or doing cool battle pose prior to Pokemon Battle. This is where the whole wardrobe-customization feature comes into play in an interesting manner. It's honestly thrilling to see it in action. - The addition of Gym Badges that keeps track of activity is also a neat touch. Aside from serving as memento of the places we have visited, now we can monitor whatever is happening to the Pokemon we've placed there without the need to travel the distance just to check them nearby. Eventhough I would've prefered it better, had it were Type-based like in the core RPGs, this was more than acceptable. Curious about the Ranking System though. How do I get a Basic/Vanilla, Bronze, Silver, and Gold? - Gone is the Prestige system, and enter the Motivation Level. Many Players have been complaining about the whole Prestige system that drains out excitement, so in a way, good riddance. On the other hand, its replacement might be a bit tricky to judge. Berries that were once treated like waste, is now important because they are necessary to restore a Pokemon motivation level. So as long as you, as well as other people continue feeding Berries to one Pokemon, it will continue its reign in the Gym. Even if they are NOT yours! I'm starting to understand that the point of giving Berries to Gym Pokemon of the same team, is a way for other users to participate in Gyms without the need to submit their own. So those who are more focused in collecting, can still gain Stardusts by giving up their unused Berries to Gym Pokemon. Aside from getting items via the Photo Disc, of course. Unfortunately, although it felt good and fresh at start, in less than 48 hours many Players are already complaining because keeping track of Gyms to feed Berries to their Pokemon turns out to be... reasonably exhausting. Just between you and me, that's practically one of the reason why this R-N-D suffered a one-day delay (I got too exhausted, it practically knocked me down cold)... - Inline with the Motivation Level, is the new PokeCoins system. Previously, Players had to assign a Pokemon for at least 20-24 hours before automatically receiving 10 Coins by collecting them at the Shop. That's no longer the case now. Coins will now be earned by the duration a Pokemon had spent in the Gym, and will be accumulated to Player's in-game pocket after it has completed its duty (as in defeated and lost all of its motivation). There's a maximum number of Coins that can be earned a day. The rule for this one however, apparently is still being tweaked and tested as we speak, as proven by the latest changes. Defending Pokemon will now earn 1 Coin per 10-minutes, to a maximum of 50 Coins daily (regardless of how many Pokemon assigned on numerous Gym). I'm still personally anxious about this change, and how this will affect my daily Coins-revenue. I'm not a pro, but Gyms are definitely my primary source of income in this game. LOL. - A new real-time push-notification has been added, thus a message will be sent to Player whenever their Pokemon is defeated and has left the Gym to return to their owner. I just got mine several hours ago, and it was both fun and sad. Fun because the progress feels up close and personal, eventhough the game isn't even activated. But also sad because clearly it's not a good news... *sniffs*. - Raid Battles is an intriguing cooperative feature. I haven't experienced it myself (it's happening in every Gyms nearby... while I'm practically stuck in the house *sigh*), but it plays out similar to what was promised on the App's teaser trailer... more than a year ago! Yes, the idea of 'multiple Players gathering around to defeat Mewtwo in Times Square', has at long last become reality. Players will be alerted of Raids event on the Nearby Screen. A giant Egg can then be seen on top of a Gym, which will then hatch into a strong giant-sized Pokemon. Using a one-per-day free Raid Pass, Player can cooperate/participate with others to defeat this Pokemon. It will be active for 1 hour, but each Player will only be given 5 minutes each. If they succeed, said Pokemon will be available to be captured. Premium Normal Raid Pass, alongside Max Revives are now available for purchase in Shop to support this feature. - There are several ranks of strong Pokemon that will hatch as Raid Boss. I saw a 1-star hatched into a Croconaw with CP 5000+, a 2-star into Exeggutor with CP 12000+, a 3-star turned out to be Vaporeon with CP 16000+, while a 4-star is Snorlax with CP 25000+. For the record, you don't really need to be nearby to see this process... which is how I was able to spot them while cringing knowing I couldn't participate. There are 5 levels of difficulty to Raid Battles, and each will award different prize. All are new items for the game: Premiere Ball, Rare Candy, Golden Razz Berry, and Fast/Charged Technical Machine. - Higher difficulty Raid will also include the Legendaries Pokemon like Moltres, Articuno, Zapdos, and others, as proven by the variants of Lugia Badge discovered in the APK. A Legendary will have a unique egg, and to battle them a different item called Legendary Raid Pass is required. Clearing a Legendary Raid will also give three ranks of Badge: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Now, before you get excited, there's a catch to this. Apparently... this special Pass is only awarded to high-level players who have participated a good amount of regular Raid Battles. Which is such a bummer for a lazy introvert such as yours truly *sigh*. Nevertheless, Niantic did confirm that this Pass will be given to active Players, so let's not rule out any possibilities just yet. After all, they are still tweaking the system with feedbacks from Players. - Last but not least, a new anti-cheat measures have been implemented. Players who obtained high levels, as well as rare, region-exclusive, high-CP Pokemon through illegal means such as hacking, GPS-spoof, or other 3rd Party Apps, will have their Pokemon specially marked. This doesn't necessarily kick GPS-spoofers, botters, and illegitimate players out from the App, it just disables them from using Pokemon and participating in Raid Battles. In theory, it's a much-anticipated update that answers the cries of many legitimate Players. But in practice, is it really effective? I'm personally not sure if the punishment is working or not. I'm still seeing many Players who have over and over again showed signs of cheating (proof? One user kept stealing my spot after I cleared out Gyms, and there's NOBODY in the area but me. Clearly a spoofer!), comfortably placing their high-level Pokemon in various Gyms.
Thanks to mining the latest APK, there are many details that have since been made available by several fan-sites like Pokemon GO Hub and The Silph Road. Most are just confirmation to what Niantic has officially announced, but some of them might hint at future additions to the game that has yet to be activated. So those who are interested can go ahead and visit those websites to check them out. The first site also provided some fan-made guides, such as technical details on how the new Gym mechanics works, Raid Survival guide, how to battle Legendary, guide to predict how manyPokeCoins we can obtain, and others.
In the end, whether this Gym System rework is effective or not, remains to be seen. Despite some of them had behind-the-scene technical updates, popular Pokemon like Vaporeon, Gyarados, Dragonite, Blissey, Tyranitar, and others are still occupying every single Gym I've encountered. Personally, this shows that the issue of seeing the same old Pokemon species over and over again isn't yet solved. And then there's the cheaters, who have gotten high levels yet was given early chance to test out the Raids. So while some Players are enjoying, others aren't quite feeling the same thing. As I said, this changed how Players think, and clearly forcing them to adapt with the new situation. As proven by the PokeCoins issue, things might still be in process of worldwide-scale beta-testing for the time being, and that minor changes can still take place on the fly. So let's just wait and see how the final system turns out when "Pokemon GO" officially celebrates its first anniversary next month!

Sherlock season 4: A Vanilla Sky remake?
So I just watched Vanilla Sky… and WHOLLY CRAP! If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch Vanilla Sky! @just-sort-of-happened made this amazing observation that in season 4′s soundtrack, there is a song called “Open Your Eyes,” and associated it to Vanilla Sky (the remake of the original movie, “Abre los Ojos”), so I was curious and decided to watch it... and there are so many similarities between Sherlock and Vanilla Sky, it’s absolutely bonkers! There are even some lines and events that the makers of Sherlock literally took from the movie asdjahsdjkhk!! (Sorry in advance for my grammar, it’s going to get crappy because I don’t have time to write and I’m just too excited to get these ideas out to the fandom :3 !)
Okay, because the plot is a bit complex, I found a synopsis of the movie: “Incarcerated and charged with murder, David Aames Jr. is telling the story of how he got to where he is to McCabe, the police psychologist. That story includes: being the 51% shareholder of a major publishing firm, which he inherited from his long deceased parents; the firm's board, appointed by David Aames Sr., being the 49% shareholders who would probably like to see him gone as they see him as being too irresponsible and immature to run the company; his best bro friendship with author, Brian Shelby; his "friends with benefits" relationship with Julie Gianni, who saw their relationship in a slightly different light; his budding romance with Sofia Serrano, who Brian brought to David's party as his own date and who Brian saw as his own possible life mate; and being in an accident which disfigured his face and killed the person who caused the accident. But as the story proceeds, David isn't sure what is real and what is a dream/nightmare as many facets of the story are incompatible to be all real. The mysterious man in the restaurant may be able to shed some light on David's confusion.” (source)
Okay, just to add a bit to this summary, the audience learns in the end that David signed up for this program called “Lucid Dream,” which freezes the client and puts them in this permanent stasis (also known as cryonics), where the clients can create a whole new world in their mind and live ‘in the present’ forever. David decided to do this because after the car crash, his body, especially his face, was disfigured. Not only that, but he was also having issues with Sofia, the ‘girl of his dreams’ (lol), and he decided that he has had enough. Of course, the puzzle pieces of this story all came together and were made clear for the audience at the end, but throughout the movie, one could get the gist that something fuckey was going on. In this aspect, the audience is just as clueless as David since his memories were wiped clean about the contract that he signed with Life Extension (the company that offered the Lucid Dream program). So, already, it’s starting to sound a lot like Sherlock, right? In season 4, there’s a lot of weird stuff going on; it’s just plain surreal, and the characters don’t really know what’s going on, just like the audience. Now, here are some parallels I noticed, and for the sake of simplicity, I’m going to describe the literal because, just like with the EMP theory, at the end of the movie it’s not really clear what exactly was real and what wasn’t. I’m going to look at the story that the makers of the show expected the audience to take away, (’the obvious story’). In EMP, some argue that Tarmac is this threshold point where the show transitioned from reality to mind palace, while others argue that this occurs when Sherlock gets shot by Mary, and then there are many other theories. Similarly, Vanilla Sky can be interpreted differently. (If you want to read alternative endings for the movie: here are some possibilities)
I Love You & its dangers
In Vanilla Sky, “I love you” was used quite a few times, and usually with the woman named Julie. You see, Julie and David had a fling right before David met Sofia, and although it was a “friend with benefits” type of relationship, Julie fell deeply in love with him. Eventually she realized that David started paying less and less attention to her because of Sofia, who they met at a party. Julie followed David, who spent all his time trying to get to know Sofia, and then confronted David about Sofia in her car while driving. Julie began to lose her cool, confessing her love for him as well as her frustrations, and David soon realized the dangerous position that they were in since she was the one driving. He tried to stop her from driving and even yelled “I love you!” to appease her, but by then it was too late- Julie yanked at the wheel and the car steered off the bridge that they were passing, instantly hitting a wall down below. David survived, although he was in a coma for a couple of weeks and he was permanently disfigured, while Julie died in the crash. Once David ‘woke up’ from his coma, he felt extremely guilty, as well as miserable with his new body and with Sofia, who wasn’t able to look at him the same way ever again. Apparently (because remember, there could very well be alternate stories!) he shut himself in his apartment, where he eventually finds out about the cryonic program online. For some reason, it seems like in order to be in the “Lucid Dream” program, you have to die first and then they put your body in stasis (I don’t really get why you need to die tho??) and that’s what David did. He overdosed on his painkillers, and then presumably the program put him under stasis. So… doesn’t this all sound a bit too familiar? Let’s just list some out some parallels: Sherlock saying an artificial “I love you” to Molly when she was in danger, Molly being tormented because she once did love Sherlock, a coffin with an “I love you” engraved on it, John having an affair with Sherlock’s sister/mirror, an omnipotent figure (Culvertron) that takes away people’s memories and ‘corrupts them,’ and the worst one yet: Sherlock staying locked up in 221B and who could very well be overdosing on drugs.
Benny the Dog
There’s a Redbeard in the movie and I’m not joking.
Benny the dog appeared often throughout the movie, which is really weird at first and should be taken as a red flag, saying that something is definitely not right. As the story goes, Benny was a dog that fell one day in a frozen lake and became an ice cube, but with the power of science, they were able to resurrect him from his icy coffin. Often seen in a short clip/advertisement on TV throughout multiple scenes of the movie, this celebrity dog hit it big time, and seemed to be the inspiration for the Lucid Dream program. It’s curious because at first, David mentioned multiple times that he was like Benny since he was a man who woke up from ‘being dead’ after the car crash, but his situation was different in the sense that David never got his normal life back. The reason that David was so fixated on this dog was because of Benny’s association to Life Extension. Sort of like Sherlock’s Redbeard, the dog is like the only tether that connects David to the real world, and is like a persistent memento that won’t let go.
Sofia + McCabe = John
Both Sofia and McCabe seem to resemble John in quite a few ways. I’ll get to McCabe in a bit, but first let’s talk about Sofia. Sofia is a very peculiar sort of character that seems very open-minded, reflective, mellow, and quirky. Sofia and David instantly clicked when they first met at the party and openly flirted with each other, playing ‘a game’ that David termed as “Pleasure Delaying.” During one of McCabe’s sessions with David, McCabe asked what Pleasure Delaying was, and David described it as: “You keep the relationship casual until the absolute breaking point. And then, one night, or afternoon, or morning... it could be months from now, well you know what happens.” Funnily enough, David didn’t actually describe what exactly happens at the breaking point, and assumed that McCabe understood what he implied (which McCabe didn’t, and for some reason instead of explaining it, David changed the subject quickly). Apparently Sofia knew this term too, and seemed to be doing the exact same thing to David. Although this might be the first time that you’ve heard of this term, if you are a Johnlock fan, you know the concept all too well because it happens with Sherlock and John. In the first episode, Sherlock and John act a little ‘too friendly’ around each other, and throughout the series they always beat around the bush about their actual relationship. In my opinion, season 4 seems to be the breaking point because of all the weird-crazy shit going on. So, I’m hopeful that in the future, whether it be in the secret episode that everyone’s been talking about or season 5 (if there is a season 5), we will see them face each other after the breaking point.... I’m such an optimist...
Now, it’s interesting because McCabe, the police psychologist, also resembles John. McCabe was an essential character in David’s life because McCabe talked David through the hot mess that he was in, and McCabe seemed to be the only character that tried to help him out. We learn later on that David apparently created McCabe as a fatherly figure because David’s biological father was always absent during his childhood. This makes sense because when David didn’t want to remember or felt too lost to try to remember, McCabe was the one pushing him forward, telling him to “dig deep.” Now, there is this scene that in many ways parallels the last conversation Sherlock and John had in TLD. In this scene, it was time for David to go to court, as well as bid McCabe farewell since McCabe was only there to evaluate David’s mental condition. Before leaving, McCabe looked very pitiful for David and seemed to be contemplating something. He then started a little monologue by saying that he was just a psychologist, similar to how John had to establish over and over again that he’s a doctor in season 4, and then went on to say...
Running out of time... family... I needed more...an answer... Needless to say, when I heard this I was 100% confident that Moffat and Gatiss intentionally referenced this movie. I mean, COME ON, SERIOUSLY?!?
Now, why does John resemble two characters, instead of just one? Well, they’re John’s two personas. Sofia is David’s lover and McCabe is David’s father, and although this might sound a bit strange, John is both of these roles for Sherlock. There have been countless times were John has been described as Sherlock’s lover but also as Sherlock’s parent. Even Sherlock referred to himself as a child once, and who was taken care of by John. Although being a lover and being a parent are quite different in a lot of obvious ways, (usually one being sexual and the other being nurturing) both of these relationships are extremely intimate and stem, at least in our society, from love. Throughout the show, John has protected, nurtured, saved, flirted (stag night), and ultimately, although he might refuse it, loved Sherlock.
McCabe is the one to help out David retell and remember his memories by being his psychiatrist, which is exactly what John does with Sherlock when John turns on his soldier-mode’ in Sherrinford in order to pass Eurus’s trials. During the time that David was a prisoner, Sofia was absent in person but not in mind, as David was literary haunted by her. For instance, there’s this one scene when David was drawing Sofia in the interrogation room because she seemed to be physically there, but when the camera shifted, she vanished from sight. Applying this to Sherlock, it’s like the loving aspect of John that’s behind his militant/doctor facade became a ghost, a thing of the past, a lost opportunity; which is what we see in the first and second episode of season 4 because Sherlock really thought that he lost him (remember when Sherlock saw Faith’s cane, he instantly thought of John? Sherlock is haunted). In the first two episodes, John looses his loving personality (which could explain how John had the audacity to beat up Sherlock so brutally that Sherlock needed to go to the hospital and the affair) and is engulfed in rage due to the ‘fact’ that Mary died because of Sherlock. However, his McCabe side still exists, being just the doctor and wanting to treat Sherlock as a patient, as well as being a father, giving Sherlock ‘tough love’ while looking over him, while Sherlock seemed to be coming up with crazy-conspiracist ideas that the big celebrity Culverton was a mass murderer (and these ideas sounded so far-fetched at times, sort of like when a child comes up with crazy, surreal stories). Of course, all of this is presuming that the mind palace that we’re in is Sherlock’s, and not John’s. Perhaps you guys have another interpretation of this and the characters?
Death
As I mentioned before, after the crash, David closed himself off from the world and stayed in his apartment where he would eventually die from intentional overdosing. Similarly in TLD, Sherlock stayed in 221B, his remaining sanctuary, where he took large amounts of drugs. Now, I shiver to think what this parallel ensues... because what about if Sherlock is the one dying and this is happening in his mind? Although I love the idea that season 4 is occurring in John’s mind, I feel like the way they reference the movie hints that it’s actually occurring in Sherlock’s. Remember how in Tarmac he took a damn huge list of drugs? Perhaps Sherlock is still up in the sky, having fallen in a deep slumber of which he might not ever wake up from...
As the synopsis pointed out, David was accused for murder in the movie. And of whose? Sofia’s. Yeah, I know, crazy right? Here’s what happened: When David died, he ‘resumed’ where he left off in the present (of course, without the remembrance of Life Extension). However, he soon began to experience some oddities, like reliving certain moments twice (this later makes sense because when this occurs, it happens when he first has a bad experience, and then it turns out to be ‘a dream’ and he goes throughout the event again without the bad experience in it. This is Lucid Dream at work since they want you to live an illusion of a perfect word that you created and yet you don’t know you created. It corrupts your memories and thoughts!) One of the biggest discrepancies he experienced was when he went to Sofia’s apartment to talk to her, and Julie appeared. He was more than stunned by this, and questioned Julie about how she survived the crash and where Sofia was. Julie acted shocked, telling him that she was Sofia, and that Julie died in the car crash. This completely freaked David out, and when Julie went to go get him a ‘present’ in another room, she came back looking like Sofia. David, being well beyond done with the crazy things happening to him, shrugs off what happened and embraced Sofia with glee. They went to do the sex when all of a sudden... Sofia turned into Julie again, and then back again. David completely lost it and didn’t want to see Julie’s face ever again, so he took a pillow and, not thinking straight to say the least, he suffocated her. At the end, it turns out that it was Sofia who looked like Julie, and that’s why David is in prison and talking to McCabe. After many sessions with David, McCabe concludes that David’s subconscious projected Julie on Sofia since David felt extremely guilty about what happened in the car crash.
Going back to Sherlock, it’s pretty similar to the theory that Vivian, and to some extent Sherlock, didn’t kill Mary but rather John killed her and that Sherlock is trying to modify this story to ‘save’ John. But, there’s also another possibility, as dark-crack as it might sound: what about if Sherlock (being David) killed John (being Sofia) but thought he killed Mary (being Julie)? Okay, let me elaborate!! Although earlier I said that Julie could be Molly, I think Julie could resemble Mary as well because all of these female characters seem to be ‘blocking’ the character from being with their true pair, like Julie interfering with David and Sofia. As many pointed out, Mary’s death scene is very artificial, as her blood spurts out like in old movies (and also, consider the fact that the name Vivian derives from the Latin word for ‘alive.’ So Mary is supposedly killed from a person named ‘alive.’ Alive kills her? Quite ironic really.) Her death is not realistic, yet, the characters believe she’s dead and Sherlock feels that he is partially to blame. In TLD, they tell us that Sherlock locks himself up in 221B because of Mary’s death, and we are to believe that he looses his noggin with Culverton because of his tremendous guilt. Yet, he’s really haunted by John, as shown with the cane scene, “anybody,” etc. Of course he feels terrible for what he has done to John, like first, Sherlock ‘killed himself,’ and then, Sherlock ‘killed Mary.’ In a way, his focus wasn’t too much on Mary’s death, but rather on John’s grief. And let’s not forget, they never stop bombarding us with “save John Watson.” I don’t think that Sherlock intentionally ‘killed’ John, but John could have very well jumped in front of Sherlock instead of Mary in order to protect him and he got shot.
This would explain the Sherlock-Eurus mirroring as well as Eurus shooting John, because if this all happens in Sherlock’s mind, he does kill John with the smoking gun. In TFP, they want to make us believe that Eurus shot John with a tranquilizer (but really, do tranquilizer guns emit smoke??) so John is fine, like how David thought that he didn’t kill Julie/Sofia. But this can be an illusion. And what about TFP, you might ask? Doesn’t it fit better with the John’s-mind-theory instead of Sherlock’s? Well, yes. It really does seem like it’s John’s world. But consider this: what about if it’s Sherlock pretending to be John in his mind? LOL I know, pure crack. I mean, remember how Sherlock said in John’s wedding: “Should any of you require the services of either of us, I will solve your murder. But it takes John Watson to save your life.” Well, if John really is dying because he tried saving Sherlock, Sherlock couldn’t be himself because Sherlock figures out murders, therefore, already when someone is dead. No, he needed to be someone else, he needed to try to be John. John is the one who saves people after all. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sherlock has seen some movies with John in the past, or perhaps on his own to see why John was so fascinated by them, thus explaining some of the movie references. But yet, doesn’t this go against the idea that Sherlock has overdosed in the Tarmac scene? Because how would John get killed by Sherlock if they have been physically separated? Well, maybe John is still in danger, perhaps with Mary, with CAM’s people, or with Mary’s assassin, and is still at great risk. Yes, I know that I spent too much time with this crazy speculation, but it’s something to consider!
Oh, and I would just like to point something else out. When David was being told by tech support (which I will talk about next!!) about what actually happened to him, he slowly dawned on the realization that it was he who died:
David: ... and it was me.
Remember when Sherlock went crazy with the words “someone” and “anyone” in TLD? “Someone” is pretty close to “somebody”... just saying...
Tech support further told David what happened when David died, especially about Sofia: “ You were missed, David. It was Sofia who never fully recovered. It was she who somehow knew you best... and like you, she never forgot that one night... where true love seemed possible. Consequences, David. It's the little things.”
Hmm... is it me or does this sound like Reichenbach Fall? Also, about those little things.... in TAB this happened:
MRS HUDSON: Oh no – you don’t take it, do you? JOHN: No. MRS HUDSON: You forget a little thing like that. JOHN: Yes. MRS HUDSON (pointedly): You forget lots of little things, it seems. JOHN: Uh-huh. (Mrs H purposely runs her finger between her nose and her upper lip while looking at John.) MRS HUDSON: Not sure about that. (John reaches up to touch his moustache.) MRS HUDSON: Ages you.
Anyways, later on Venture told David that Sofia was his savior... sort of like how John’s always described as being Sherlock’s savior. This is some crazy mirroring going on.
Ventura = Eurus
Okay, so I mentioned earlier about tech support, so who the heck are they? Well, they come from Life Extension, and are people who go inside the clients head/world in order to facilitate the process as well as fix possible issues occurring. David’s world isn’t exactly perfect for some reason and is considered “glitched,” which is why there’s a man from Life Extension, named Edmund Ventura, who follows David around. When David finally confronts this mysterious man, he tells David this:
Ventura: First of all, it's very important that you calm down. You must overcome your fears and regain control. Take a hold of your life again, David. It’s like that glass that you’re holding. What if I were to tell you that you can take control... of all of this, everything?
Of course, David doesn’t really know what the heck Ventura is talking about, and as David is recounting this story to McCabe he remembers Ventura from something, somewhere else, but he can’t pinpoint the memory. This reminds me of a lot of Eurus, especially with that glass scene. Just like Ventura, she tries to push Sherlock into realizing that there’s no glass and Sherlock doesn’t get it until he touches the glass which isn’t there. And I know fans were pissed off about this, saying that there would be no way the greatest detective in the world didn’t realize that there wasn’t glass in front of him... but now that I think about it, that’s exactly the point. Everything happening around Sherlock is an illusion. He would have realized that there wasn’t glass in real life, but he doesn’t because it’s fake. And in order to move on, he needed to acknowledge this. But he doesn’t do that, and instead, Sherlock applies his deducing skills and attempts to logically explain the glass that doesn’t exist as a clever trick of the eyes.
Here are a couple of other Eurus/Ventura mirroring:
- Ventura is seen with Benny’s TV commercial. Eurus is connected to Redbeard, and she uses technology a lot- even a TV during their trails.
- Ventura doesn’t show any emotions, and seems like an omnipresent figure in David’s world, or like a scientist with a lab rat. Eurus doesn’t feel ‘normally’ like others, and she treats Sherlock, John, and Mycroft like lab rats, changing the trails and seeing how they respond.
- David knows Ventura, but can’t remember who he is or from where David saw him. Sherlock forgot his own sister.
The Fall: The solution to the final problem
Alright, now these next few scene’s that I’m going to be talking about are essential, especially to Sherlock. To begin with, in prison, David remembered about the man in the restaurant (Ventura) when he saw the TV commercial of Benny the dog (and it’s surreal because the television set was outside of his cell in the corner... like if it was meant for only him to see). He told McCabe this just as McCabe was going to leave ‘forever,’ and they both went to investigate the company that made that advertisement, which was Life Extension. Once he entered the building, David got a bunch of fragmented flashbacks, which left him dazed and confused. McCabe and David were greeted by a secretary (remember how Mary said secretaries know everything? This one is smug as heck because she knew David) and gave them a pamphlet about Life Extension, and then she booked them with one of the workers who had met with David before. Now, for some reason, all the female workers had the same hair color and eye color...
HM DON’T THEY LOOK A BIT LIKE
Anyways, the worker went through the spiel about Lucid Dream, telling them all about the options that they gave to people who had lost all hope in their lives. David began associating what she was telling him with his situation, and his memories came flooding back. Terrified, he ran away, yelling out to tech support for assistance. Eventually they responded, and once again Ventura appeared, asking David to follow him in an elevator. As they went up an impossibly high building, he explained to David that this was all David’s doing because he signed a contract with them, 150 years ago. After David regained all his memories, Ventura went on to tell him that David now had to decide whether or not he wanted to continue living in this illusion. Ventura told him that a glitch disrupted David’s illusion which caused all this ruckus, but now Ventura fixed the glitch and he could ‘restart’ David’s illusion to go correctly if David wished to and erase everything that happened, or, David could go back to the real world. The reason that they were in this huge building in the first place was because David, when he signed the contract, apparently had to give himself a way to go back to his actual life if he ever chose to, and he told them that if he could conquer his fear of heights, then it would show that he was ready to live again. So therefore, it’s the Reichenbach fall and the waterfall scene in TAB, pretty much. (And remember, in TAB it was set in 1895, 122 years ago... it’s not 150, but its damn close to it.) As David contemplated this, McCabe ran up the stairs (which was impossible because that building was a million floors up) and told him to stop listening to Ventura, that it was all a trick. And this is where things get screwed up:
McCabe: David, don't listen to him. You were right.... It's a setup! You can't trust him.
Ventura: Don't feel bad for him, David. This winning man is your creation. It's in his nature to fight for his existence, but he's not real.
McCabe: I'm real. I'm real. I have two daughters... and you know that.
Ventura: What are their names?
McCabe: *Can’t answer, looks terrified* I'm mortality as home entertainment? This cannot be the future! Can it?... Can it? *Grows silent, and then looks seriously at David* Good-bye.
Guys...McCabe couldn’t name his daughters... because his daughters don’t exist... and if we think about Rosie, she doesn’t exist in Doyle’s novels... and have you noticed how John a couple of times is like: “Why is no one listening to me?!”... like, what are the implications of this parallel? Does this mean that the John that Sherlock has been trying to save isn’t real? That Sherlock is living an illusion right to the very end of TFP? Or, does it go back to the first fall, the Reichenbach fall, when John tries to tell Sherlock not to jump but Sherlock doesn’t listen to him? After McCabe seemed to accept his fate, this occurs:
Ventura: What is happiness to you, David? David: I want to live a real life. I don't want to dream any longer. Venture: Any last wishes? David: Let them out there read my mind. Ventura: I wish you well, David.
I feel that this is what Sherlock has been doing all this time. He has been living in his mind palace, in a dream that he thought was happiness, but unlike David, as the discrepancies around him became more obvious, Sherlock still tried to keep the illusion together.
The parallels don’t end there. Later in this scene, Sofia appeared out of the blue. David held her close, and then this double whammy happened:
David: Look at us, I’m frozen and you’re dead. And I love you
Sofia responds with a grin: It’s a problem.
David: I lost you when I got in that car. I'm sorry. Do you remember what you told me once? That every passing minute... is another chance to turn it all around.
Sofia: I'll find you again.
It’s the final problem. Literary. And David was confident with his answer for it: He was going to jump and leave this illusion behind. And that’s what he did.
He jumped, and before the second he hit impact, he had a flashback of all his memories. His life flashed before his eyes. And then, everything faded to white, and we see his eye open while Sofia’s voice is heard one last time:
Sofia: Relax David, open your eyes.
...the car that can represent the plane in Tarmac... the final problem... the fall... the building that looks like the one in TBB... Ventura wearing all white just like Eurus... Sherlock saying “I’ll find you” to John... time running out and every second counts... Moffat and Gatiss must have done this intentionally. Now... as for the “Look at us, I’m frozen and your dead”... if this does apply to Sherlock, it could be that Sherlock is on the Tarmac plane, and has overdosed. It’s said that when someone overdoses, their skin feels extremely cold to the touch, so, Sherlock is ‘frozen’ because of all the drugs in his system. As for John being dead... well... crap.
Smaller similarities: The violin & broken guitar
In this scene (at the party), Sofia comments about the guitar, saying: “ So this is what's become of rock and roll-- a smashed guitar behind a glass case displayed on some rich guy's wall” without realizing that David was behind her. And he says “It was a gift, actually.”
... um.... Eurus gave Sherlock a violin... and everyone has seen that promo picture of Sherlock’s violin and how one of its strings was broken...
The airplane
There were a couple of times when David referred to himself as being high up in the sky, and in the scene of the picture above, this was after the car crash. Just letting you know, David takes the toy airplane and crashes it on the floor while saying: “ I try to tell myself what to dream. I try to dream that I'm flying. Something free. It never works.” (Also, remember that when Sherlock got out of the plane, he tweeted: Free as a bird! Free indeed... but it never works Sherlock ;c )
“We can catch a movie sometime”
This was said by David during a party, (after the crash) when he wanted to so desperately be with Sofia while she was practically running away from him. Remember what Sherlock told John about taking dates to the movies?
SHERLOCK: Oh, dull, boring, predictable.
At that point, David lost her. And this was the last time he would actually see the irl Sofia because that was the night he discovered Life Extension and a couple of days later he would kill himself.
“I’m an idiot”
There are two times when David says this:
- “ I may be an idiot, but I'm not drunk.” (Reminds me of when Sherlock was asking for John’s help and John thought he was high as hell)
- “ Even in my dreams, I'm an idiot...” (Reminds me of when Sherlock tells Eurus he’s just an idiot on the ground)
Four times
Okay, so when David freaked out about Julie telling him that she was Sofia, he tied her up, and for some reason said this...
Now, I have no idea what he means by that... but apparently four times means... something... and like, Sherlock did say: “ Must be something comforting about the number three. People always give up after three”... What is going on with the number four?!?
Pop songs
When Ventura gave him the option of either choosing to stay or going back, he told David that if he decided to stay: “Your life will continue as a realistic work of art... painted by you, minute to minute... and you'll live it with the romantic abandon of a summer day... with the feeling of a great movie... or a pop song you always loved-- with no memory of how it all occurred... save for the knowledge... that everything simply improved.” Remember how Eurus talked about happiness being a pop song?
So this could very well explain TFP’s ending... why Sherlock quickly establishes a good relationship with his sister that threatened him, Mycroft, and John and becomes violin buddies with her when his violin is broken in a promo shot...
and why everything simply improved....
FIRST THEY DON’T GIVE US THE SHERLOCK-JOHN SMOOCH THAT WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR AND NOW WE CAN’T EVEN HAVE THIS BECAUSE APPARENTLY IT’S FAKE. GREAT.
The red balloon
Before hitting the ground when David jumped off the building, he had a series of quick flashbacks about his life, like of Sofia and his childhood. Most of them were black-and-white and sepia-like toned, such as the image above, but for some reason his mind focuses on red, as seen with the balloon.... Reminds me a lot of this...
Even the damn blanket matches the sepia...
"The sweet is never as sweet without the sour”
This is like one of their favorite quotes in the movie, they repeat it over and over again. What this quote means is that nothing is quite as good without going through shit and struggle first. This can be seen with John and Sherlock, and which is why the fandom was so keen on seeing John and Sherlock hooking up and finally confessing their love to one another; they went through so much together. It’s curious because candy and ‘sweets’ have been mentioned throughout the series, and the one that I remember the most is when John and Sherlock went to go have cake for Sherlock’s birthday. At first I found it kind of funny how John and Sherlock had this really intense and emotional conversation and then John’s sort of like “yo, let’s go get cake!” But now it makes sense, because finally after holding it in for so long, John and Sherlock were able to talk frankly about what they were feeling, even if it was just all in Sherlock’s, or possibly John’s, mind... and it’s the sweetest sweet, like a birthday cake.
“It doesn’t matter”
This is probably one of the lines that pissed off the fans the most (including me). At first I was like: Who Sherlock and John are doesn’t matter?! Did they seriously think that was a good idea and wrote it down?! But now Vanilla Sky cleared it up for me. Why? Well... when David was in Sofia’s apartment and at first he was met by Julie but then later on by Sofia, he said: “Oh, I missed you so much. Where were you? Forget it. I don't need to know. It doesn't matter.” But here’s the thing, it does matter. David said all of this while ignoring the fact that Sofia switched with Julie because he just wanted to be with her. Even though he didn’t really realize it, David didn’t want to know because then that could break the illusion of Sofia (obviously in real life she’s dead because 150 years passed). David had been “forgetting” for too long, and his mind was telling him this when all that switching nonsense between Julie and Sofia occurred. In the same way, if this is really happening in Sherlock’s head, he is saying, through Mary, that he would rather spend an eternity playing detective with his trusty John Watson and ignoring who they are. And who are they, according to Mary? John is the one who never came back from the war, which is so tragic considering that in Sherrinford, John refereed to himself as a soldier... so this could very well mean that he never came back from Sherrinford, meaning that Sherlock didn’t, in the actual world, save John’s life. And Sherlock, well, he’s the one that is a junkie who solves crimes to get high, meaning that he will continue staying high up in the sky in his plane, possibly having overdosed on drugs in the Tarmac scene, and continue his little fantasy until it’s light’s off... and I mean... the last scene that we see is Sherlock and John running in slow motion (time’s running out) until...
... they completely stop, frozen, (just like ‘Benny the dog,’ David would joke) in midair... and then it just goes dark. Guys, in the Vanilla Sky ending, the screen goes white when David hit the ground! So, black being the opposite of white means...Sherlock’s still in the illusion.....and if it stopped then that could mean that Sherlock’s mind is no longer functional and that he’s dea-GOD I really hope that this interpretation is wrong ajdhakjsdhakjsdhksajdh
Conclusion of Vanilla Sky and Sherlock:
Here’s the takeaway message that I got out of Vanilla Sky: Live your life to the fullest and appreciate it, even with its struggle, because if it weren’t for those bad-times, then “sweet would never be as sweet.” David gave up on his life the first time around and realized when he lost it all just how silly it was that he did so because David had everything he could ever want. He had people who loved him, beautiful memories, and friends who were there for him, and when he signed up to Life Extension, it was like he forgot all these things. Could this be happening to Sherlock? I mean, he did hashtag #OhWhatABeautifulMorning in the first episode of season 4, which is a song that goes as...
It's a beautiful mornin', ah I think I'll go outside a while And just smile Just take in some clean fresh air, boy! Ain't no sense in stayin' inside If the weather's fine, and you got the time It's your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day Either way It's a beautiful mornin', ah Each bird keeps singin' his own song So long! I've got to be on my way now Ain't no fun just hangin' around I've got to cover ground; you couldn't keep me down It just ain't no good if the sun shines When you're still inside Shouldn't hide, still inside, shouldn't hide Ah, oh! (Shouldn't hide) Ah, ah, oh...
...
But also realize, if this is the case, Sherlock’s glad to be in the illusion because he’s happy being alive within it, unlike David... I mean, at the end of TFP he overcomes his childhood trauma, he lives with John and Mary, he’s surrounded by friends/family like Lestrade. Hudders, and Molly....
.... I guess Sherlock just wanted a beautiful morning with a Vanilla Sky for once...
....
I’m so done.
