How Concerned Citizens Drove a Neo-Nazi Out of Rural Maine
Christopher Pohlhaus planned to build a fascist training compound in the woods of rural Maine. The local journalists, veterans, lumberjacks, and policymakers weren't having it.
Pohlhaus, 37, is a former U.S. marine, an itinerant tattoo artist, and a hardcore white-supremacist influencer. He is loud and hostile, and proud to be both. His voice is pitched surprisingly high, and he has a slight Southern drawl. He has a large body and small bald head; a blue-black tattoo crawls up the right side of his face, from his chin to his forehead. Over the years, Pohlhaus has collected thousands of social media followers, who know him by his nickname: Hammer.
Hammer had been living in Texas for a few years when, in March 2022, he bought the land in Maine. He told his followers that he was going to use it to build a haven, operational center, and training ground for white supremacists.

One of my favorites by Paul Lehr, used as a 1971 cover to "Earth Abides," by George R. Stewart. It's also in my upcoming art book!

My dad always said that a fire at sea will ruin your day, but it sounds like a fire in the docks will too.
The gallows exhortation was apparently a whole Thing back in those days, with the condemned's words of contrition and advice being turned into pamphlets and ballads and such.
The Dockyards Nightmare
There is nothing worse that can strike a dockyard than a fire and yet in 1776 it struck Portsmouth Dockyard for the third time.
In the late afternoon of 7 December fire broke out in the rope house. All but two workers had left the building by then, but once the alarm was raised hundreds of men quickly arrived on the scene, well aware that should a fire take hold there would be huge destruction. In addition to all the hemp, timbers, workshops and tools there were five ships in dry dock for repairs and a number of warships on slips in various stages of construction. Fortunately, although the rope house was destroyed, the fire was contained.

A Geometrical Plan West Elevation of His Majestys Dock Yard Near Portsmouth with part of the Common…Thomas Milton Surv…Published according to the Act of Parliament April 29th 1754 (x)
Initially the blaze was thought to have been an accident, but the evidence pointed to arson and a hunt began for the perpetrator.

John the Painter setting Fire (x)
Suspicion fell on a man who was known as John the Painter, and an advertisement was placed in newspapers offering a reward for his apprehension. Somewhat of a social misfit, John the Painter’s real name was James Hill, alias Hinde, alias Aitken. He had previously fled overseas to the American colonies to avoid arrest for a number of crimes. There he had consorted with political revolutionaries and come up with the wild plan of setting fire to England’s dockyards.

James Aitken alias John the Painter or James Hill (x)
On 10 March 1777 a shackled Hill was transported to the dockyard, the scene of his crime. A public gallows had been erected around the mizzenmast of HMS Arethusa. Interestingly, all the dockyard rope makers tied the rope on which he was hung. Before he died, Hill apologised for his actions and exhorted the authorities to exercise great care and strict vigilance at the dockyards in future. A crowd of 20,000 watched his execution, and then the lifeless body was placed in a gibbet and rowed across the harbour entrance to Blockhouse Point and suspended there for all to see. The fate of remains of Jack the Painter, as he became known posthumously, is uncertain.
However, there is a persistent rumour that Sailor dug him up again to settle a pub bill with his body, only one finger was kept. This mummified finger was then used in the dockyard as a tobacco stopper for illustrious guests.
By the way, there is a rumour that John or James Ghost, with just 9 fingers likes to show up at the Dockyard on Halloween and tries to set the Rope house on fire every time, apparently he still hasn’t given up his plan.
