Idk if you fine with this or not, but what about them having a still birth /miscarriage? This isn't like a kink thing, I just love angst (for genshin)
I'm in the mood to write some angst tonight, so buckle up! Obvious TW for stillbirth/miscarriage as well as topics such as suicidal thoughts and depression.
Mondstadt
Albedo It doesn't hit him at first. He finds his underwear soaked with blood before any sort of pain begins, but he's very aware of what's happening. Tries to keep calm, reminding himself over and over that sometimes these things just happen. He's barely two months along, only learning a week prior of his pregnancy. It hurts, but ultimately he's able to place logic above emotion, grieves quietly for a bit, but moves on rather quickly.
Bennett The guilt swallows him up when the midwife breaks the news to him. His little one is bundled up tightly, born sleeping. Silent at first, he's left shaking, blaming himself over and over because he knows he's unlucky, he should have never even tried to bring a child into this world. Refuses to hold his baby, he can't face them, and it's all his fault.
Diluc There's no warning, only the sudden onset of cramps that leaves Diluc scrambling from the tavern to the closest doctor. Gasping in pain, he begs them to do something, anything. He followed everything they told him to do, why was this happening? The doctor does their best to explain things, that miscarriages are far more common than people think- Diluc doesn't care, once the doctor is certain everything has passed and the bleeding begins to slow, he's shut down. Refuses to speak about it, won't even acknowledge his pregnancy at all.
Kaeya Perhaps, it's divine punishment. His newborn is cradled to his chest, silent and looking angelic. Only crying once he's left alone with his child, begging them to forgive him, and cursing every deity he's ever heard of for taking his child. "Take me! Why...why didn't you just take me instead..."
Mika It was an accident. A mistake heading down the library stairs, his foot slipping out front under him and his body crashing to the ground below. The pain is instant, stabbing him in the gut. People rush to his aid, calling for a medic, a healer, anyone- It's too late by the time they get him help, and Mika is left sobbing, begging for another chance, it was just an accident.
Razor Isn't unfamiliar with stillbirth, it's common among the wolves that raised him to have pups that don't survive birth. However, he isn't prepared for the deep, bone-shattering grief that overtakes him when his child doesn't cry. Limp in his arms, he's left howling in agony while the wolves that raised him stand nearby, quietly mourning alongside him.
Venti It isn't the first time. Beings such as himself didn't hold the same rights as mortals, and each child he's tried so hard to bring into the world, all meet the same end. Venti cradles them close, laughing through his tears, whispering tales of his past, and promises to meet them on the other side.
Liyue
Baizhu The risks were well known, Baizhu isn't a fool. It was a terrible idea to even try, but he was so blindly hopeful that maybe, things would be alright. He wakes with slight cramps, praying that it isn't what he thinks, but by noon, the blood begins to flow. Held up in his bathroom, he sobs, guilt pouring over him like a cold rain. Why did he even try?
Chongyun He wasn't even aware of his pregnancy when it happened. Confused and alarmed by the blood and pain, he hurries to the nearest doctor. Is left in shock at the news, and it takes a few days to process the events.
Gaming The entirety of his family is around, prepared to celebrate the newest addition to their family when the unthinkable happens. Gaming is screaming, begging the midwife to hand him his baby, but no matter how they try, not a breath is to be taken. The joy of the day is dashed in minutes, and Gaming can barely breathe, chest constricted with such grief he's certain his heart will stop.
Xiao Just another form of divine punishment for his past actions. The blood running down his legs mixes with the rain pouring around him. The valley is filled with the sorrowful cries of a mourning bird, but no one pays it any attention.
Xingqiu He's ready every book, listened to every doctor, and followed every rule, so why?? Why did his waters break at only five months? Why was there nothing they could do? What sick, cosmic joke is this? Forcing him to give birth to a child with no chance of survival. Following the events, he locks himself in his room, refusing food and company. It isn't worth it, nothing was worth it.
Zhongli Like Venti, he isn't shocked. His body simply wasn't meant to bring life into this world, not after taking so many in war. Stoic and cold, he buries them under a tree, marking the spot and promising to come back to visit again in the future, when the pain has dulled.
Inazuma Arataki Itto Doesn't understand what's happening. Why is he bleeding? Why does it hurt? It isn't time yet, not for another few months! Ignores it at first, because he really isn't sure what to do, and by the time he's finally ready to seek help, brings his child into the world far too soon. No one sees or hears from him for weeks afterward, but he returns looking exhausted and drained, but smiles and waves it off.
Ayato The cramps he awoke with were mild, and the doctors had already warned him that it wasn't uncommon to feel light cramps in the first trimester. His body was adjusting, womb filling, so he continues about his day as usual. The meeting is dragging on longer than it needs to, and by the time it's done and he takes from his seat, the blood splatters to the ground between his legs. Shocked and horrified, he screams for them to find a doctor, but in the end, it's too late.
Gorou The first two pups are born perfect, healthy, and squalling. Exhausted, he expects the third to be born the same, but the silence is deafening, and before the midwife even has a chance to break the news, he knows. Shuts himself off from everyone, pouring all his time and attention to the two little ones he has, torn between trying to forget and fearing not remembering.
Kazuha Laughs bitterly, tears dripping down his cheeks. Looking down at his silent newborn, he feels an indescribable mixture of hate and bitterness. Why him? After already losing so much, how was it far to lose this too?
"Tomo...please...guide him."
Heizou Doesn't know he's pregnant until he's sitting in front of a healer, being told he's experiencing a miscarriage. His heart sinks, but in the end, he can't really feel all that much since he hasn't even known.
Thoma The whole Kamisato estate hears the desperate wail. Thoma begs the midwife to hand him his child, even for just a moment. Ayaka rushes to his side, holding him close while Ayato quickly makes arrangements for Thoma's child to be buried alongside the other Kamisato family members. Sumeru
AlHaitham Silence. Just silence. Alone at home, trembling quietly on the toilet while his body rejects the little life he'd dared to grow attached to. Never speaks a word of it to anyone, and no one even notices something had happened at all.
Cyno Isn't aware of his pregnancy until he begins to bleed. It doesn't occur to him until later what had actually happened, and he feels ill realizing he wasn't even aware of why he'd been in such pain while in the desert.
Kaveh Screaming. It chills the blood of everyone who hears, and he's inconsolable. Sinks into a very deep depression. Can't bring himself to move from his bed, loses weight rapidly, and finds himself thinking of wandering out into the desert at night. Perhaps his father would be waiting for him alongside his child.
Sethos It's the halfway mark in his pregnancy before it all goes wrong. Tries to deny it, and forces it from his head, but every time he hears the birds overheard, he swears he hears a baby crying.
Tighnari Rational to an extent. He knows the first trimester is the riskiest, and that pregnancies fail all the time, but it just feels so unfair that it happened to him. Thankful he didn't tell a soul, but feels so isolated going through it alone.
Fontain
Freminet He knows he shouldn't be lifting something as heavy as a claymore, but when his siblings are in danger, Freminet can't bring himself to sit by and do nothing. The regret is instant, and the blood causes him to freeze up, the sound of his sibling's voices distant in his ears.
Lyney Sobbing, begging for another chance. Lynette and Freminet do their best to comfort him, but really, their words fall on deaf ears. Nothing is going to be enough to heal the wound in his heart now.
Neuvillette The sight of blood has him frozen in place, stomach-turning. He deals with it privately and says nothing to anyone. Fontaine has horrible rain for weeks, nearly flooding some of the lowers streets.
Wrio Doesn't know, not until he's in a boxing match, and he sidesteps a little too slow. Normally, a single punch to the gut would mean nothing, but this time, he's brought to his knees instantly. Blood begins to pour, but in the moment, all he can do is drag himself upright and finish the fight.

Hi! For the Unusual Fic-Specific Asks for Authors, I'd like to ask two things about Broken Ground! First, perspective flip: I think you mentioned Lisa being more present at first and then cut out of the scene, so I'd like to know more about that :> How was it from her point of view? And also, time after time: when the group arrived back to Mondstadt after the ordeal, how did Lisa react?
Thank you for the ask! :>
I'm not entirely sure if you wanted Lisa's perspective on the scene that happened, or the one I cut, but I do love the one I cut even if it didn't serve the story, so I'm going to pull it out and POV-flip it up to the point when I realized I had to back up and do something different. >>
Lisa is still standing on the top of the Ordo steps when Barbara and Master Diluc come into view. Barbara she'd expected; Diluc she hadn't, not quite yet. She'd thought she would have to send Huffman, whom Kaeya has assured her is quite reliable when there's information he wants to distribute, to the Angel's Share to ostensibly roust out any off-duty knights who'd taken up drinking there. At which point Diluc would take off on his own initiative, with no idea of his course or what he might intend. This works out much better. "Lisa!" Barbara calls, rushing up the steps. "What happened? That cloud is from where my- where Master Jean went, isn't it?" "It does seem to be," Lisa says, patting Barbara gently on the shoulder. "We don't know for sure what's happened there just yet, but I'm trying to find out." "I take it this wasn't part of the plan." "Not at all," she tells Diluc. "This was only supposed to be a scouting mission. They must have found something very interesting indeed." She keeps her tone confident and unconcerned for Barbara's sake, hiding her own tension. The thought of Jean and Kaeya out there facing something that could have caused such tremendous chaos alone--or worse, having failed to face it, and lying injured somewhere--makes her chest ache with worry. A part of her wishes that she'd been there, though she knows there may not have been anything she could do. The best thing that she can do for them now, Lisa reminds herself, is to stay calm and in control and coordinate the emergency response. It's where her talents most lie. "Have you sent anyone to find out?" "Not yet. If it's something Jean and Kaeya can handle themselves, there's no rush, and if it's something that they can't, then there's no point in sending anything less than another captain to help them out. Noelle's gone up to Dragonspine to collect Captain Albedo, and I'm sure he'll set out as soon as she finds him." She's supposed to keep an eye out for Amber on her way, too; some advance scouting wouldn't go amiss in this situation. But she doesn't want to make Barbara any promises that she can't keep, and collecting Albedo is the higher priority. Amber is impressive for her age, but not nearly as strong, and incapable of dealing with the kind of earthquake or landslide that the evidence implies. "But...." Barbara blinks furiously, clearly fighting back tears, and shakes her head. She knows just as well as Lisa that Lisa is making the right choice for the situation, but Lisa can't blame her for her resistance. Behind her, Diluc is frowning. Lisa can see the wheels turning already, but a little nudge doesn't hurt. She deliberately gives him an arch smile. "You know, Master Diluc, I'm sure a former knight-captain would be just as capable as any of our current captains in an emergency."
...Which isn't the end of that conversation, but is the point where I realized I had to cut it, because I hit that line and realized that I wanted Diluc to have the agency of making that decision himself, but also (as I was writing it from his POV), he was coming to it too slowly to beat Lisa to the punch, because this would have been offering assistance directly to the Knights. So I cut out both problems by having Noelle summarize the situation, and making it a direct and immediate response to Barbara's desire to go herself.
As for Lisa's reaction when she returned, a combination of concern (because of the state they were both in--it didn't make it in, but I actually had it that Kaeya couldn't even take over for her for a couple of days because the Ordo has a policy re: concussions) and relief, because her friends were alive! She had to do the actual work of running the Ordo, and while both of its other top two members were out of commission to boot, so despite what she'd like to do (which was spoil them XD as well as Barbara and Noelle, who were both pretty bad off themselves after all that healing) she had to focus on doing three jobs solo for a while, which was probably even harder once news got about that Jean and Kaeya were both out of commission.
But once Kaeya recovered enough to take over, she unceremoniously took three day's leave and spent it sitting in the Cathedral infirmary drinking tea with Jean and Barbara (and keeping Noelle from working too hard by keeping her busy fetching and making tea for them), reassuring herself that everyone was all right! And sitting on the sisters just a little while she was at it. :3c

Tumblr media
A genuine laugh came out of the younger man upon hearing his brother’s disbelief and incredulity. Yeah, he doesn’t blame him at all for that.
“None taken, I assure you,” Kaeya snorted, deciding to reach out for one of the sandwiches he had simply left there. He still needs to buffer that massive hangover he knows he’s going to have later, and food will do just the trick. Aside from water, of course.
Plus, this gave him time to just wind down and allow Diluc to take in everything that he just told him. It was a lot to absorb, all at once. I mean, really, what else can you do when faced with the fact that the oldest living Archon is still very much alive and, in fact, was dating your younger brother? Diluc was taking this a lot better than most probably would have.
Chewing on his sandwich slowly, he served himself more water and chased the food down with it, having gone fully silent to let them both stew in their own thoughts for the moment. After hearing it come from his own mouth, even Kaeya was still reeling over it all and began to go through many, many emotions. Fondness from the memories of how they first started out, to sadness, to anger, to grief. Rinse and repeat.
This was too much for a guy like him. He already has enough on his plate as-is, and yet here he is, going through it anyway. It was all out of his own choice, of course, but he severely miscalculated where this would all end up. Not like he could’ve calculated the variable of Zhongli being Morax.
Honestly, the power imbalance wasn’t anything terribly frightening to him. In fact, it was appealing to him in some of the most fucked up ways, but he knew the dangers that came with all that. He voiced them himself, after all. One moment he can be standing, and the next he can be a pile of dust. Well, no, that somewhat appeals to him anyway regardless of his fears.
Wow, he’s only just now realizing how fucked up this is and how terrible his taste in men is.
Women would never do this to him.
When Diluc finally spoke up, Kaeya looked at him with such an exhausted expression as it all came weighing down on him, one by one, brick by brick. His brother made a point; however, it still didn’t ease the way his heart tightened every time he recalled that look. Still, he found that he couldn’t argue against that, other than just groan in anguish. Zhongli has every reason to have masks of his own, to have trained himself to set feelings aside when it came to the protection of his people and the protection of himself.
… In fact, he understood that very well.
His brows furrowed upwards upon this realization, his gaze falling to his lap as he continued to slowly chew on his food that had already turned into pure mush in his mouth.
But still, he couldn’t get the question out of his mind: why him?
After swallowing and when there was a small lull in the conversation, he spoke, “… He said he wanted something, however he wasn’t able to finish telling me what. It pissed me off, and I yelled at him over it, asking what he wanted. What could he have possibly wanted from me, rather than anyone else? But he didn’t answer me, and merely said that he should go. So I left, instead.”
Perhaps he should have made Zhongli stay. Forced him to tell him what it was he desired out of this. However, he already yelled at the man, and he wasn’t all-too-keen about seeing just how far he can push an ex-Archon. Anyone else is free game, but Morax? The moment he does that is after he’s made his will.
He continued to listen as his brother spoke, and it made him sink further and further in his seat, because he hates when Diluc is right. He hates whenever he’s wrong, in general, but having Diluc prove him wrong? It stung even more coming from family.
Yet, he bolted upright in his seat when Diluc as if they were nothing, looking to his brother frantically and shaking his head. “No—no, Diluc, we’re not nothing because of something stupid like that! I just—…” He stopped, not able to find any way to justify his words. “… I’m sorry. You’re right. I shouldn’t have said that.
Perhaps I don’t have a good understanding of him, after all. I thought I did, until… Well, y’know,” he waved his hand noncommittally. “The whole Morax thing.”
Kaeya took in another breath and finished his second glass of water, putting it down along with his nearly finished sandwich in order to fiddle with his hands. His thumbs rubbed against each other’s nails as he tried to collect his thoughts and feelings—at least, the best he could for an unstable drunk man who started blubbering over the smallest things.
“… Maybe—maybe he could learn to understand me. Perhaps I was just…being vitriolic, in the things that I’ve said. To try and push him away, because I was—and still am, afraid. It’s terrifying to be seen, Lulu. I guess I wanted to cut him off before he could, despite my feelings for him.”
Tumblr media
Diluc listens, careful and attentive... And reluctantly tosses aside the notion of committing any murders in the near future.
What replaces his rage and upset is complete and utter shock -- not just to hear that Morax was alive and well, just living his days out among the people ( how strangely familiar ) but also that he was this mysterious suitor that had his brother so enthralled.
What in the world is he supposed to say to any of this?
"Kaeya... No offense-- I love you, but... Sometimes you truly astound me."
It didn't sit right with him. Not fully. What business did Morax have, shacking up with his baby brother?
Reaching for the cake he'd been spying earlier, Diluc finds himsef in need of a quick sugar hit to ease his weary mind. There were all sorts of images running through his mind in regards to this strange coupling, and few of them were pleasant.
Personally, he feels neither here nor there about what Archons get up to in their downtime, but did Kaeya himself not see the danger that came along with it?
There was a level of absurdity there -- to think of the divine seeking love and adoration amongst mortals when all they had to do was reveal their true selves and they'd have all sorts of worshippers queuing up to genuflect and bow to their feet?
What reason could they have to masquerade amongst the people? Were even the Gods themselves actively hiding from something?
He can't fathom. It's all so far beyond him, and his only concern at this present moment is Kaeya, and the fears that clearly plagued him on a deep and heart-shattering level.
If he could only take it all away, he would.
But he couldn't deny that parts of this reeked of self-sabotage.
"As much as I don't want to give this heartbreaker any credit, maybe there's a reason that he acts the way he does. I imagine that a God has to have quite the poker face to get through 6,000 years without appearing vulnerable, much less the first and oldest Archon. Gotta be feared to be respected, as they say."
Diluc hates that he can't get his own sudden change of heart out of his mind. That night, when he himself had flipped his own grievous, red-hot rage upon his sibling... Was this how he felt? Did he look similarly broken, yet with nowhere else to turn?
How awful.
"Throughout history, power often only changes hands through tragic or violent means. To gain, and then hold onto that power for at least the length of Liyue's long history... It must have been a hard road. I don't think we, as humans, could comprehend it."
And then to just let it go all in a sudden, a quiet exit, without much in the way of a struggle... It didn't make any sense.
"People put on masks to shield ourselves from the hurt the world inflicts upon them. We've both done it, haven't we? Are the Gods any different, if they're sitting there languishing over things like loneliness?"
Truthfully, he did feel somewhat scorned by the implication that however much he tried, could not understand what Kaeya was going through. It didn't make it any less true.
But it also didn't make their bonds any less important.
"If he makes you as happy as you say, then does it matter if he doesn't understand you right this second? Do you think he could learn to?"
He wasn't going to like what he said next, but perhaps it was necessary.
"By your logic, what's the point of maintaining any significant relationships at all? Are we nothing, just because I'm not your flesh and blood? Is no one allowed to empathise based on similar experiences of loneliness and grief?"
He offers a serious, pointed look, trying not to take any of it too personally when Kaeya's emotions are up at ceiling level.
"You say all of this, and I agree that your circumstances are particularly unique... But so are his. So, if I apply what you're saying, it doesn't sound like you could have a good understanding of him, either."

This is a terrible day for the both of them - one stained with bad memories of both pain and loss. Kaeya knows, however, that it's especially awful for Diluc. The day where he'd lost his beloved father and suffered a betrayal from his adoptive brother, all on the day of his birth, certainly must have made it feel like the worst day in the winery owner's life. It comes as no surprise that Diluc would come to despise it then, given all that it must have represented to the fiery man.
All the more reason for Kaeya to keep a watchful eye on his brother from a distance. Diluc changed the location that he spent his birthdays in every year, but since the noble remained, ultimately, in Mondstadt, Kaeya is able to tail behind him year after year, making sure that his brother is safe as he grieves that which he's lost. Starsnatch Cliff, Stormbearer Mountain, and even the ruins of Old Mondstadt, to name a few - if there's a rime or reason behind these choices, Kaeya isn't certain as to what it is. He finds himself surprised by this year's option, however, given Diluc's reluctance to remain near the Dawn Winery - then again, he supposes that the spot is secluded enough, nonetheless.
Still, as he watches his older brother - if Diluc even allows Kaeya to call him that - Kaeya is unable to ignore the way his chest aches. This, he thinks, is not how he wants his brother to spend a day that should be a happy one - standing in front of the grave of the man who raised them both, likely blaming himself for not being able to save him. Kaeya knows that feeling well, as he's wondered, time and time again, if he might have been able to change things had he been faster - had he arrived just a few moments sooner, maybe even a few precious seconds...
Could he have saved Crepus? Might he have spared Diluc that pain? Maybe prevented his dear older brother from leaving Mondstadt for so long?
He knows that there's no point in dwelling on 'what ifs'. Not anymore - not when the past is written in unbreakable stone. Kaeya doesn't realize it as his feet carry him forward, out from behind the cusp of trees that he'd be using for cover and towards the other man - not until he's standing almost directly behind his brother with a hand outstretched, reaching for his shoulder. Very nearly, the Cavalry Captain snatches his hand back at the realization hits, but something stops him - two words that now sit upon his tongue, urging him to speak. How long has he wanted to say them out loud? To offer that which Diluc deserves to hear, whether he wants to accept the words or not? How long has he feared uttering them?
And yet, that grave that lays just out of his line of site seems to whisper something, encouraging him like a set of warm hands on his shoulders - a parent, giving Kaeya that push he needs. Maybe Crepus is here after all.
If he is, Kaeya owe him this much as well. "... Luc?"
--- if his dear, baby brother wholeheartedly believes he does not realize he's being TAILED, then it is evident they have TRULY grown apart as brothers. Every year, it's like this. Every year, Diluc chooses a NEW location to journey to, on or around his day of birth, as a means of grieving by his lonesome. He doesn't want the pestersome ' are you okays. ' The looks of pity . . . the forced, uneasy smiles as gifts are pushed into his hands and repetitive reassurances are shoved down his throat. It does not get any easier, no matter how many times the record plays back, and though his methods of coping may be relatively UNHEALTHY, it's the only way he knows how to keep from taking the EASY way out.
Tumblr media
Mayhap this is why Kaeya sees fit to trail after him every year. To ensure this year, or the next, or the one to follow is not the year he permanently loses a brother, too. Their relationship is strained -- irreparable, so Diluc believes after his own, VIOLENT actions that fateful, tragic night -- but at least they are both alive. Well ? Hardly, but despite it all, they both still manage.
He hasn't seen Crepus in a while. Father. Life has been terribly busy, this year--- or maybe this, too, is how he's managing to continue getting up and getting by. If he's working, it's less time to think. To hold himself prisoner within his own thoughts until they, inevitably, suffocate and drag him down. It's a wonder he's not six feet under yet . . . certainly RECKLESS enough to have secured a reservation or two at death's door, by now, but he doesn't FEAR death. It will come for everybody, at some time or another . . . sooner for some, later for others, Crepus being a saddening example of the former.
It's his fear of dying ALONE that has him dragging himself back to the winery, some late nights, Adelinde on the other side of the door with a first aid kit and an hour long lecture. Would he be missed ? Not for his place in the professional world, but the PERSONAL life he'd carved the substance out of ? Would Jean miss him ? Klee ? Would the Angel's Share and Dawn Winery staff miss HIM, or their paychecks ?
. . . would Kaeya ? Despite his own brother nearly ENDING HIS LIFE so many years ago ? A man in mourning nearly turned a murderer ? Hearing his baby brother's voice adds ample weight and VOLUME to these thoughts, and Diluc, as he turns to face the only other family he has left, stiffens in trepidation.
Tumblr media
" What ? " He winces at the harsh tone of his voice. Guarded--- he shouldn't be GUARDED around his own damn brother. This is precisely why they're estranged. Distant. He hates it -- HATES it, and he knows Crepus is somewhere, SCOLDING him for his tone. Deep breath in, deep breath out, Diluc takes a second to change his approach, to something less standoffish. " You've been following me for a while. Every year, you do this, Kae. Why ? " He tilts his head, frowning. " Whether you choose to believe me or not is on you, but I already promised I wouldn't disappear again. If it's Jean who sent you, or Adelinde, you can double or triple that message. Speak your mind, why are you here, if not to visit father's grave ? "
@ironbloodcd ;; ♥ THAT SWEET, BROTHERLY PAIN.

hello!! c: I loved prompt 18 and so I was wondering if you could write something with childe, diluc and kaeya (separately) where your s/o is very excited for the date that was arranged, the reader gets dressed and puts on his/her best clothes, but then after waiting a long time for her partner, she realizes that he won't show up. Maybe after returning home find the character sleeping or doing something else? angst/hurt with comfort attempt pls? 😭
When he stands you up, and then apologizes
summary: you had both agreed to this date, you even planned it on advance so that it wouldn't interfere with his schedule together! ...so why isn't he here? includes: childe (19 bullet points), diluc (21 bullet points), kaeya (19 bullet points) format: bulletted headcanons + small dialogues warnings: reader being stood up, also i think this turned out to be really gender neutral? i think i didn't really use gendered words... thank you for your request! i hope you like it >< i'm still not very good at writing kaeya, so i hope this was okay;;
Tumblr media
Diluc
Truth be told, you were already expecting this to happen. Deep down.
But that didn't make it hurt any less.
You both had planned it with months of anticipation, too. He promised you he'd be here.
But here you were, coming back home after being stood up. You had waited for him for hours, and he never showed up.
So you were back at the winery, and he wasn't even there. The maids told you he had to attend... some business outside.
Just great, you thought as you entered your shared, empty room and put on some more comfortable clothing. He forgot about it.
When Diluc gets home late at night and goes to your room, he's greeted with you snacking on some cookies and reading a novel.
"Love?" "Oh, you're finally home. Hi."
Diluc feels guilty. The reason why he hadn't gone to your date was because he had received yet another threatening letter from the abyss order and had to take care of that as soon as possible.
It really wasn't his intention to stand you up!
Even if you know about his vigilante duties, he feels hesitant on telling you this.
He feels like it sounds like an excuse even if it isn't and he has proof.
So he kneels down next to the bed while you keep giving him the cold shoulder, hurt, yet trying not to show it to him.
"I'm sorry, love. I really am. I promise you this will be the last time something like this happens. Please let me make it up to you."
And making it up he does.
For the rest of the month, he clears his schedule as much as possible to spend time with you.
Whatever you want to get or do, he will get or do.
You want to eat your favorite cake? He'll get the maids to bake it for you.
You want to visit Liyue, you say? He can take you there and get you anything that catches your attention, from a simple dish to the most expensive of jewerly and outfits you could want.
He's awkward with his words, but even then he tries for you and tells you how precious you are to him, how much he loves you and how sorry he still is he sometimes can't spoil you and spend time with you how you deserve.
More than anything, though, he spends quality time with you and does acts of service for you besides the multiple gifts (since you probably rejected a lot of his offers to get you things). That's how he tries to make it all up to you.
He promises he'll be more careful from now on.
And he kept that promise, since in the next big date you organized, he was there an hour early with a bouquet of your favorite flowers, waiting for you.
You were never stood up again.
Childe/Tartaglia/Ajax
Normally, you wouldn't blame him or be too hurt when this kind of thing happens.
You understand he has a very important position within the Fatui and that means he can be sent on important, urgent missions at any time and he can't complain or go against his orders.
You respect his work, you get it and all.
But this time what hurt you the most wasn't being stood up, it was the fact that he didn't show up the next day, or the next, or the next, or the next after that.
He practically disappeared for two months without any notice and without sending any kind of letter or message.
A lot of the usual agents you'd see working at the bank and you knew worked under his command weren't there, and the few who were had no clue where he went.
You were both angry, hurt and worried sick.
You waited, and waited, and kept on waiting.
And the night he finally came back home, fortunately unharmed, you literally tackled him with a hug with tears in your eyes.
"Uwah, you missed me that much~? Wait- it's not the time for this! I'm- I'm sorry, alright? I'm sorry I couldn't go to our date that day, it really wasn't my intention to-" "S-shut up! I- Do you know how worried I was?!"
He was thinking about your date the whole time he was away on that long, long mission.
Ajax can be a lot of things, most of which are bad things, but he would NEVER break a promise.
So he feels extremely guilty for breaking that one promise he had with you :(
If you thought Diluc could start to get overwhelming with gifts and attention, you have yet to see what Childe is willing to do to earn your forgiveness.
You WILL be treated like royalty, whether you want to or not.
He will spoil you rotten with everything he can. Food, gifts, travels, physical affection, adventures, theatre plays, concerts, art works, books-
Say the word and he will give you whatever you want. No need to hold back! He loves spoiling you, don't feel guilty for anything.
Hell, he would even let you beat him up without defending himself if you were really that mad at him.
"Okay, do you remember what we say in Snezhnaya about pinkie promises? If we break one, we can be thrown in the ice. Do you want us to go to Dragonspine so you can throw me in the ice or something?!" "A-ajax, we don't need to go that far!!" Or maybe you do, hmm...
Overall he's very apologetic and feels a bit disappointed in himself.
He never wants to break your trust, so he will make sure this won't happen again!
Kaeya
The Cavalry Captain is a very busy person, even if it sometimes doesn't look like it.
You know it, you've known it from the very start.
But it doesn't make it any less humilliating or painful to leave on your own after waiting for him for hours just for him not to show up at all.
You go back home and, after having cried for a while, you go to sleep on your own, locking the door from inside and keeping the key with you.
So when Kaeya went back home, he couldn't enter the room to sleep.
This man literally forgot about your date, sorry.
He just got so busy early in the day- he was practically overworked the entire day and couldn't get out to go to your date.
In fact, he was so tired at the moment that he feel asleep the moment he sat down on the couch.
So the apology would wait until tomorrow, when you would finally get out from the room to have breakfast.
You saw no glimpse of him, and assumed he just wasn't home right now.
But as you were making breakfast for yourself, he appeared seemingly out of nowhere and hugged you from behind.
"Hello there, darling... I'm sorry for yesterday, I suddenly got all this work piled upon me. I know, I know it sounds like an excuse but I swear it isn't. I'm just- I'm sorry, sweetheart, I really am."
He goes on to explain everything that happened to him the day before and apoogize over and over again.
He feels so sorry :( He was so stressed and overworked, it really just skipped over his head.
He asks you how would you want him to make it up to you.
He will do about everything you want, no matter what it is.
He, too, would let you hit him for a while if you were feeling mad enough to do it.
He's going to be practically glued to you for the rest of the week- or even the next month if he can!!
He will get very touchy and vocal about it too... Overall, Kaeya is going to be really clingy with you.
You might need to tell him to stop if it gets overwhelming, otherwise, he's going to keep on doing it!

hello!~ o(〃^▽^〃)o
can i request headcanons for kaeya, diluc, childe, and venti on what they would while their s/o dies in their arms? (if thats okay with u <3)
thank u sm! :))
BESTIE THE PAIN I FEEL RN!!! Omw to make hurt some of my faves hope you enjoy <3
Also guys I’ve been here for a day how are there almost 50 of you following?!
Pairings; (Separate) Kaeya, Diluc, Childe, Venti x reader
Warning(s); hurt, big hurty, reader death, vague wound description, cursing, talk about dead bodies
Keep reading under the cut!
Kaeya
This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. You were meant to live forever with him. You were supposed to grow old with him and become a parent to your future children. You were-
“Kaeya” you choke out smiling at your partner above you. The man shakes his head mentally pleading with you to not die “Kaeya I will always be on the wind” you tell him, a shaky, bloody hand raised to his cheek to weekly caress it
“Please” he pleads “Please don’t die on me [name]” you smile at him feeling the breaths in your lungs disappear
“I’m sorry Kae--ya” you apologise before passing away in his arms
He doesn’t move for a long time. He doesn’t feel for a long time. The one person he could share his secrets and his love to gone. Away with the wind
Kaeya doesn’t remember the last time he cried, but he’ll remember this one.
Your beaten, bruised, broken, dead, and beautiful body slumped in his arms as his tears fall from his face as he feels an absence in his heart
How is he supposed to live on if this is the pain he feels right now?
Jean eventually stumbles upon Kaeya out in the wilds, still clutched to your now cold and even more lifeless body
Jean manages to get the man up with your body held close to his chest
“Jean, I can’t, I can’t let them go” he pleads as if he’s waiting for you to simply wake up in his arms
“Kaeya...” Jean says in a concerned tone having never seen him in such a state, even he seemed to quickly recover from his fathers death
Eventually Jean coaxed Kaeya to go back to the city and leave your body in the hands of the sisters. Where they dressed you up and prepared a funeral service for you
The funeral was larger than Kaeya was expecting, you had affected a many more people than he realised from your small jobs around the city. Kaeya can’t help but be awed at how many people you’ve helped while you were in Mond
The usual chatter of Mondstat is quiet and in a time of grieving for about a week or so, many people have wonderful memories of you and Kaeya seems to be collecting them all, that and bunches of flowers. Many of which find themselves laying on your tombstone as Kaeya tells you about his day
A month passes and it seems like everything's back to normal, Kaeya is back to his outgoing self. He spends more nights at the tavern, but even Diluc doesn’t have the heart to cut him off.
Jean seems to pick up on the smallest things, goddamnit Jean, the extra nights at the tavern, the eyebags, the weeping she can hear from his room. In it’s own right is heart-breaking, the acting Grandmaster cannot imagine what it’s like to be actually experiencing that kind of pain
-
Diluc
No, not like this
You had both decided that night to join each other in your little vigilante escapade. Which was fine you had both done this before, but tonight resulted in something very different
Here you are, head on Dilucs lap. This could be considered romantic, and often was, were it not for the fact you felt like you choked up a mixture of your lung and your bloody supply
“Diluc” you speak with a much worse for wear voice, the red-head looks into your eyes, eyes already gaining moisture. A similar scene has befallen him before, a Diluc knows how this ends
“Please” he pleads his voice wavering “Please don’t leave me” he chokes back a sob and tears fall off his face the salt hitting your own
“I love you so much” you start, Diluc shakes his head. Must you hurt him so with last words? “Don’t blame yourse-” another set of hacking befalls you as you lose more blood
“Please” he pleads again as the grip you had on his arm goes slack indicating your loss of life
Diluc screams, he cries and he hugs you close. He screams into the air of Mondstat until his voice hurts and he cries until all he’s doing is dry sobbing and he holds you close until you’re broken body is pried from his own broken mind
A wondering Jean heard his screams into the night sky and hereby answered them. She never expected to see Diluc, still in his vigilante getup, crying over your body
She calls for more guards who take your body from his and Jean helps Diluc get back to the estate. At one point during the walk Jean can feel DIluc shaking and hyperventilating. So they stand for a moment, Jean holds and comforts the wine-master before they move again
Jean has never seen such emotion from Diluc before, and she wholeheartedly hopes she’ll never have to see it again. Seeing Diluc so raw and rife with emotion is enough to make anyone cry. And Jean nearly did on more than one occasion.
Your funeral is small, much to Dilucs request and really only were attended by the estate and Jean. Diluc didn’t want to cry again in such a large audience
Though the maids often hear pained sobs coming from Dilucs room as he contemplates and often blames himself for what had transpired. Maids daren’t speak up about what they hear though, Diluc’s pain is more than understandable
Diluc throws himself into work opting to man the bar most days of the week and fighting for the city as often as he can. People around him are more than concerned
Diluc’s stoic nature seems to be intensified now, not wanting to let another person in and die in his arms. He’s seen enough death for his life and wishes not to lose more loved ones
Everything seems to have moved back to what life was before you arrived in your life, depressive, monotonous, boring, mundane for the most part and sad. So very sad
He wishes for a day where his heart isn’t strife with grief, but he doubts that day will not be coming anytime soon
-
Childe
You grin up at him, feeling close to naught pain coming from the gaping wound thanks to the excess of adrenaline that’s pumping through your body
“Childe” you say the smile still on your lips in an attempt at not making the situation as dark and horrific as it is. Childe speaks your name in return
“I love you” you tell him mustering the strength to cup the mans cheek, who immediately nuzzles into it. The situation almost doesn’t feel real to him. He’s going to be shaken awake by a very unwounded you in just a moment and inform him he’s having a nightmare
But that moment doesn’t come. Nor do any words come from you. Your slow rhythms of your heart remind you that he’s still got time, but you’ve expended all your energy. Your smile you’re wearing seems to be dropping
“I love you [name], I love you so much, you are everything I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you” he rambles bringing your body to his chest
“Live for--- me” you sputter out into his chest, a dying wish that Childe isn’t too sure he can uphold. Is it really living if he’s an empty vessel.
You go limp in his arms and he can no longer sense your heartbeat. Death had finally laid claim to you
Childe sits with you for hours, you’d expect him to be wailing like a banshee if you knew his personality but that’s rather not the case. Sobbing quietly is a better word for what happens. Most of his sobs and hacks for air are hidden in your hair. He pulled your body to his shoulder just to weep
Eventually he finds himself mustering the courage to walk back to Liyue Harbour. You firmly held in his arms. He knows that if he walks too plainly the Millelith would pry and ask too many questions for his fragile heart to answer
Childe ends up barging into the wangsheng funeral parlour, which surprises Zhongli a little. He’s about to go on a rant to Childe about how he must book an appointment, until he sees your lifeless body in his arms
The funeral is arranged quickly and neatly. There aren’t many people who attend, Childe is okay with that, he secretly wants to see his family and cry on their shoulder a bit
Instead he opts for a letter, which arrives to the family tear stained and lacking the usual penmanship ‘I’m sorry, you won’t be able to see [name] after all. They passed away not too long ago...’ he basically writes your arbitrary in the letter. And his whole heart is in every word he writes
Determined not to let anybody in Childe finds himself in a pattern, when he’s not throwing himself into battles he’s doing paper work or yelling at his subordinates and when he’s not doing that he’s doing his weekly fight with the traveller. Childe gets next to no sleep and instead opts to reading and rereading every letter and note you’ve ever given him
If Childe passes out at his desk nobody bothers him either in fear of getting yelled at by the harbinger or an understanding of losing a loved one
They never said being a harbinger was fulfilling work. Yet, he let himself believe that he could be fulfilled and content with a lover. What a shameful lie
-
Venti
He’s awfully quiet. He hasn’t experienced death in so long. Especially one he thought would be forever.
He couldn’t even get to you to hear your last words. Ironic isn’t it? He hadn’t heard that guys last words either. And yet this pains him so much more
Sure mortal lives are fleeting but he was certain he had more time with you. More time to see you grow old, more time to put off your inevitable mortality. More time to-
He’s hyperventilating, Venti’s body shakes as he finds nothing to ground himself not even the person he loves so dear is there for him. He feels like he could explode, breaths caught in his throat refusing to surface and come up for air. Despite being an immortal archon, the breaths that refuse to surface don’t fail to make him feel like he’s choking
A bard he is. And one that knows every song from the past, present and future. Suddenly the pained songs from the future make sense to him. He knew what was written. A love lost
Suddenly he finds himself crying and hunched over your deceased form making promises to the wind that he’ll never forget you. Much like he’ll ever forget that bard
He isn’t sure how long has passed but he’s still sobbing over your form, there aren’t many tears left for him to cry but he can’t find himself stopping. He feels like they’ll never stop.
Maybe he could lay beside you and sleep for another thousand years. But that would only delay the inevitable. The inevitable sinking feeling.
Maybe it was his fault for letting himself fall in love with a mortal, but in the moment he could truly see you living life with him. He could see a marriage, children. He wanted you to have it all.
Damn celestia and all things above for not letting you ascend, at least when he inevitably ascends you’ll be there to greet him. Curse that and your mortality
Jean eventually stumbles upon him during a recon mission to find him covering your body in various flowers, a crown made of cecelias don your head. He’s quiet, but he’s saying goodbye. Who would blame him? Jean doesn’t interrupt him and only wishes you a farewell
News of your death spread around town like wildfire, your grave donned with more flowers than Venti can count. He almost feels bad about not doing a public service after seeing how many people are truly in mourning
Diluc doesn’t push Venti to pay his growing tab no matter how much he should. And Diluc doesn’t say no to Venti singing his happy tunes in the tavern
It feels like his life has retuned to normal. Though Jean can’t help but look out the library window to see Venti sat atop his statue with an expression, as Jean can only guess, of sadness.
Venti finds himself going back to an old schedule again but he can’t miss the nagging feeling of somethings missing. The something being you
Sometimes he half expects you to hug him from behind, or join him up at the statue, or kiss him on his nose, or-
Venti can’t quite comprehend how he feels, he just knows there’s a hole in his heart where you belonged. And he doesn’t want to let anyone find their way into there
He doesn’t want to lose again
It’s happened too much

―――
Diluc and Kaeya being aware of how intimidating they can be individually and being careful with each other, moreso at the beginning of their relationship post Diluc's return.
Diluc yells a lot - it was a… necessity, so to speak, during his travels.
No one pays attention to soft spoken people, or soft spoken commands.
Kaeya's getting on his nerves and Diluc snaps and shouts at him from across the house.
Kaeya immediately shuts up, but it's all too silent. Diluc's stomach churns.
He goes to find Kaeya visibly shaken and taken back, but attempting to appear otherwise. His hands shake, though, and Diluc's heart sinks.
"Kaeya…? I'm… I'm sorry."
Kaeya shakes his head. He backs away when Diluc tries to come closer. "Don't."
It's an hour of Kaeya separating himself in the bedroom before he returns. He no longer has such a terrified look in his eye. He's merely uneasy.
"It… It reminds me of that night," he whispers into Diluc's shoulder, muffled. Diluc's embrace on him tightens.
"Does it?" Diluc whispers in return. Guilt threatens to choke him.
Kaeya hesitantly nods. His hair tickles beneath Diluc's chin.
"I'm… I…"
Diluc waits. He'd always wait for Kaeya.
"It scares me. You scare me, sometimes," Kaeya admits.
Diluc can't speak.
His own boyfriend is afraid of him. Diluc certainly doesn't blame him… But he still has the urge to vomit.
Kaeya must have felt Diluc tensing because his grip tightens too.
"It's been a long time since I've been scared," he says. "But when you yell…"
Diluc promises to avoid yelling at all costs. He'd never realized how frightening it could be, as it had been normal, but Kaeya's fear…
He wants to give him the best home possible. /Be/ the best home possible.
On the other hand…
Kaeya is very quick, manipulative, and agile. He uses it all to his advantage, sometimes unintentionally.
Kaeya stands in the shadows of Angel's Share, leaning against the wood, and watches Diluc yank on some longer gloves for his Darknight Hero getup and start off into the night.
Really, this is ridiculous, in Kaeya's not-so-humble opinion…
Diluc hasn't slept in days. What's he doing /fighting/ in this state? He can't help the insomnia, but this is risky even for him.
Kaeya frowns and follows behind. He's uncaring if Diluc notices him or not, because he's not here to be sneaky, but to take Diluc home and get him to bed.
Diluc fumbles pulling his hair up. Kaeya has watched him redo it three times, Diluc grumbling and twitching each time.
Diluc's agitated and oversensitive, it seems, and all from fatigue. He only repeats actions on his person like this if it's bad sensation wise.
Kaeya pulls his cape tighter around his shoulders and frowns. It's getting chillier at night now - it almost feels like a snow night, if Kaeya didn't know any better.
Diluc sets off towards the city entrance. Kaeya follows behind.
He would be lying if he said he's not interested in how this is going to play out.
An exhausted Diluc with self destructive tendencies + mobs of Abyss-laden monsters = ?
Kaeya's heart nearly jumps out of its chest as Diluc misses a shadowy step down and begins to tumble.
His body moves before he even thinks of it.
Kaeya lurches and grips Diluc's shoulder, fingertips digging into his thick clothing. Just barely he's able to yank him backwards and keep Diluc on his feet--
Diluc whips around, claymore suddenly in hand.
It's a work of Barbatos Kaeya jumps out of the way in time before it comes down on his hand.
"Di--"
Diluc in his entirety is a punch to the gut; one hand and Kaeya slams to the ground in an instant, pinned.
The breath is knocked out of him. The ground is so, so cold.
Kaeya wheezes. He struggles to turn, lips opening to snap, but words die on his tongue.
There's a look in Diluc's eyes he's never seen before.
He's unhinged, and terrified, wired and on edge. There's no recognition in them until several long minutes later.
"K--Kaeya?" Diluc chokes out.
Exhausted eyes that are oh so awake widen and crinkle in immediately guilt. The fear doesn't leave - oh no, no, no, it does not.
Kaeya notes how Diluc's body brims with restlessness.
Diluc's in survival mode now, isn't he? "It's me," Kaeya pants. "I'm--" Diluc lets up, and Kaeya pulls in a deep breath, "here to take you home."
"Home?" Diluc stares at him.
"Yes, home." Kaeya picks himself back up. "You're in no state to be out right now." Diluc's hands flex around the handle of his claymore. His eyes flit, in a constant state of alarm and surveillance.
"I--I can't," he mumbles, "I have to…"
Diluc sounds so pitiful.
"Have to what?" Kaeya asks softly.
"Not safe…"
Kaeya's heart breaks.
It isn't too often anymore he sees the aftermath of what the Fatui did to Diluc. It's harrowing every time, though.
He manages to coax Diluc down from being on the verge of snapping or bolting, and brings him back to his city apartment.
There's no way they're getting home to Dawn Winery tonight after what Kaeya caused.
Kaeya doesn't miss how jumpy Diluc is, even in a locked, safe home. He doesn't look like he feels safe.
Kaeya vows to make him feel safe every day for the rest of his life.
And for Kaeya, that means putting down some of his sneaky habits.

— heavy burdens.
Tumblr media
pairing.  kaeya/gender neutral reader
genre.  angst
description.  on an important anniversary, kaeya gets drunk off his ass, bonds with a fellow captain, and realizes some burdens can’t ever be set back down.
warnings.  spoilers for kaeya and diluc’s character stories. mentions of alcohol and a character (kaeya) being under the influence.
note.  four months later and i’ve finally finished this fic after writing it on and off for that whole time mskfjdks a big thank you to sierra, miya, and grace for reading over the previous drafts of this and giving me their honest thoughts, love you ladies <3
Tumblr media
He hadn’t expected to get shitfaced when he had first stepped foot in the tavern. Honest.
His plan for the evening was as follows: Go to Angel’s Share, chat with patrons, share some laughs, learn some secrets, and see where the night goes. Only the information he gleaned would tell how it ended; with him stumbling back to his quarters for a night’s rest, or ruminating on how to dismantle schemes that enemies of Mondstadt were concocting in the shadows.
So, the usual. Nothing too noteworthy.
Then he happened to overhear a conversation on the way there.
The two civilians spoke in low, somber tones about how it has been exactly one year since Master Crepus’s death and his son Diluc’s subsequent departure from Mondstadt. How terrible, they mused as they shook their heads, that the new winery master hasn’t been heard from since. He must still be in mourning over his father.
Kaeya nearly stopped in the middle of the crowded street. Was today really the one-year anniversary of Master Crepus’s death? How had it managed to slip his mind? He’s been busy lately with a promising lead, true, but to think that he would forget...
Which, long story cut ruthlessly short, leads him to where he is now. Tuning out his tumultuous thoughts with the help of alcohol and secrets.
Upon entering the tavern to raucous cheers, he had flitted from table to table like the social butterfly he's purported to be. The usual suspects greeted him with varying levels of warmth, inviting him to sit and keep them company. Stable hands and bandits alike shared a drink with him, words spilling from their lips like the fine wine they supped on.
After some time, though, he grew tired of their monotonous days and banal gripes. So he retreated to the bar counter. As he nursed a Death After Noon, he kept an ear out, listening carefully even as he chatted with Charles between customers.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t heard anything juicy yet. So and so is complaining about his wife, while someone else is haranguing her boss, and another is celebrating their birthday. Dull and uninteresting.
Can you blame him for getting so deep in his cups? There’s nothing else to do on such a slow night.
“So this is where you decided to hide out. Colour me surprised.”
Kaeya notes the shadow falling over the counter moments before a familiar drawl reaches his ears. He tilts his head up, blinking furiously when his vision blurs. The drinks he's downed thus far—how many has it been? He lost count after five, how unlike him—have certainly reached his bloodstream.
You stand beside his stool, your lips thinned into an unimpressed line. Despite how inebriated he is, the relevant information he has on you flashes through his mind. A Knight of Favonius. Captain of the Intelligence Team. Once a company grade officer, then sergeant, lieutenant, before ascending to captain upon the retirement of your superior.
As admired as he is by most of Mondstadt, you’re among the minority who are far from his biggest fans. For good reason, he supposes. During your first meeting, he had congratulated you on your promotion, before going on to flippantly insult your old captain. You’ve hated him ever since.
Which is why he’s puzzled by you approaching him first—outside of headquarters, at that. Such a phenomenon is rare, like catching a crystalfly in your hands.
“Captain! Fancy seeing you here,” he greets, adopting a jovial tone. Then your words register in his addled mind. “‘Hide out’, you said? Whatever would I do that for?”
You prop a hand on your hip. “You didn’t make an appearance at the meeting today. Needless to say, the Dandelion Knight isn’t too impressed with you at the moment.” You appraise him, looking underwhelmed by what you see. Ouch. “Strange. You don’t seem terribly ill to me.”
Ah. That. Kaeya had wanted to investigate some curious rumours he’d heard around the city, so he made up a flimsy excuse to dodge the captain’s meeting held this morning. Grand Master Varka likely hadn’t batted an eye over it, but not Jean. She’ll have concerns.
He hums noncommittally. The thought of annoying his oldest ally never fails to bring a smirk to his lips, but he isn’t quite in the mood right now. “Is that so. You must be here to sternly tell me to clean up my act then.”
You scoff. “Surely you don’t need a second babysitter. No, I’m off-duty, so I’m here for the same reason everyone else is: to drink.”
“Hear, hear.” He lifts his tankard as if to toast to you, but the sudden momentum causes him to sway dangerously in his seat.
“Careful!” Eyes widening in alarm, you reach out to steady him. “Geez, Alberich. How many drinks have you had?”
The palm of your hand is warm where it sits on his shoulder; he can tell that even with his furs in the way. He almost leans into the touch but catches himself at the last second. How mortifying. He can just picture your horrified reaction to him drunkenly nuzzling up against you.
Almost falling off his seat in a crowded tavern, instinctively seeking out your slightest touch... He needs to get a hold of himself. Or find a way to halt the conversation here, so he can resume drinking by his lonesome.
“Not nearly enough,” he answers airily, leaning an elbow on the bar counter. You drop your hand to your side; he makes a point to not stare at it as you do. “Where’s your entourage? I’m surprised they aren't following dutifully behind you.”
“They’re my subordinates, not my entourage.” You shift awkwardly. “And they aren’t here. It may surprise you, but they have lives outside of the Intelligence Team. They can enjoy one evening without their captain breathing down their necks.”
He eyes you in amusement. “In that case, you should join me. I would welcome the company.” He finishes off his tankard, then motions to Charles for another drink. The bartender doesn’t even ask which one as he takes the pewter mug. He knows him well by now, after all.
Kaeya expects you to turn him down and find a seat elsewhere. Usually, such an invitation is enough to send you running for the hills. You lean a hip against the counter instead, as if settling in. “If I am not mistaken, you’re needed at headquarters tomorrow. I strongly advise you to call it a night, Captain.”
“Aww, are you worried about me, Captain?” He manages a grin at the scowl his reply elicits. “Don’t be. It won’t be the first time I stumble into work hungover. Certainly won’t be the last either.”
“How reassuring,” you say dryly.
“I aim to please.”
He perks up when Charles returns with a full tankard. The delectable taste of Death After Noon still sits on his tongue, warm and heady. He very much wants to experience it again. When he lifts the mug to his mouth, however, he misses the rim. He steadies the tankard before it empties itself onto his lap, but some of the wine drips down his chin, ruining his vest.
Thank goodness he isn’t drinking red wine. Every adult in Mondstadt knows red wine stains are notoriously difficult to clean. Still, what a waste of a perfectly good sip.
“Oh, for Barbatos’s sake.” That’s all the warning he gets before his drink is rudely snatched from his hand. He protests but can only watch helplessly as you bring it to your lips.
Then you proceed to down it.
His brows raise higher and higher the longer your throat bobs. He's never seen you drink with such gusto before. Shouldn’t you be gasping for breath by now? But no, you empty the tankard in a single go, then slam it on the counter (Charles makes a face, but wisely says nothing) and meet his gaze without flinching.
Wow, is all that his intoxicated mind can conjure up at the feat.
“There, all done. Now let’s go. I am walking you back.” Your voice is firm, brooking no argument. How captain-like of you. “Wouldn’t want Mondstadt’s illustrious Cavalry Captain to be found passed out in an alleyway tomorrow.”
On any other day, he’d be mildly irked by your stubbornness. But he did just spill his drink down his front like a newborn babe. No wonder you brought up his rank. In your eyes, his conduct must not befit that of a high-ranking knight. He doesn’t care what assumptions people form about him, never has, but tonight has been a bust anyway. Maybe it's best to call it quits.
Sighing theatrically, he rises to his feet. “All right, I know when I have been beaten. But don’t change your plans on my account. I can head to the barracks by myself just fine.”
“I’m sure you can,” you say, “but letting you walk alone this late in your state would grate at my conscience. So would you stop talking for once, and let me take you home?”
You get what you want. Your words render him silent.
Home, you called the barracks. He supposes you consider that place your home. But is it his, truly?
He thinks of Khaenri’ah, nothing but a distant, bloody memory. He thinks of his father, and how in their final moments together, the man had stared through him like he wasn’t there. He thinks of the Dawn Winery, where he had spent several years causing mayhem. He thinks of Master Crepus, never dad, and a brother who doesn’t exist anymore.
No, the barracks aren’t his home. Maybe he’s never had one to begin with.
When he comes to, Kaeya registers you leading him in the direction of the tavern door, your hand on his shoulder blade. This quickly catches the attention of the patrons. They call out their goodbyes, some raising their tankards and others chuckling good-naturedly.
“Look at that! Our Cavalry Cap’n had too much to drink, eh?”
“What, are you tapping out already, Captain Kaeya?”
“Has to be escorted out by a fellow knight, no less!”
You wave over your shoulder. “Just doing my patriotic duty, that's all.”
Kaeya gives his audience an exaggerated wink (as well as he can with his one uncovered eye) followed by a lazy hand salute. His grin remains fixed in place until the door swings shut. The wooden barrier barely muffles the sounds of conversation and merriment coming from within.
Had it been that loud while he was inside? He hadn’t noticed.
He isn’t able to dwell on it for long, because you nudge him in the direction of headquarters. “Come on. We have a bit of a walk ahead of us. Let’s get to it.”
“Oh, very well. But only because you asked so nicely.”
“I wasn’t asking.”
“I know. I was being sarcastic.”
You nudge him harder, and he snickers under his breath as he walks.
This time of night, the cobblestone streets seem devoid of life. With the exception of Patton, who’s practically asleep standing up, the two of you don’t run into anyone. It's a stark change from how the city usually is, bright and bustling with crowds.
It suits him just fine, though. The crisp night air is sobering him up somewhat, the fog that had settled over his mind thinning. All too soon, he recalls everything he was trying to suppress.
Master Crepus. Diluc. His callousness and cruelty in forgetting them both.
In hindsight, he should have taken his mug back from you instead of just gaping like a fool. Sobriety is such a drag.
“You’re quiet,” you comment. You’re staring at him intently, your expression eerily similar to Timaeus’s when he is observing an alchemical reaction. It’s as if he is a specimen that you are keen on studying under a microscope.
He wants to scowl, to snap at you. “My apologies,” he says instead, as innocent as can be. “Were you waiting for me to strike up a conversation? Hold on a moment, let me think of a good topic...”
“That is not what I meant and you know it. It’s just, usually it’s impossible to get you to stop talking. The times I have seen you...indisposed”—buzzed as a bee, you undoubtedly mean—“that doesn’t change. You talk more, if anything.”
Curiously, your voice softens, an odd cadence colouring it. One he has not heard from you before, not directed at him at least. “I guess I’m just wondering if something is weighing on your mind. Is that what prompted you to drink so much tonight?”
By now, the two of you have walked down the stairway to the Knights of Favonius’s bulletin board. Of course, Hertha isn’t there this late to assign requests and bounties. The pieces of parchment pinned to the board flutter in the breeze. He stares at the sketch of a Ruin Guard, willing his sluggish mind to craft a suitable answer.
After a beat, his eye slides over to you. An impish grin curls at the corners of his mouth. “My, I had no idea that you watched my every move so closely. I’m flattered by the attention.”
Predictably, you sputter. “What even—that is not—you know what, if you want to dodge the question so badly, fine. We can just walk the rest of the way in silence.”
“As you wish, Captain.”
Although his words were said to fluster you into changing the subject, as you had correctly deduced, Kaeya means them. You have noticed him far more than he realized. As Captain of the Intelligence Team, it’s your job to be observant and keep tabs on others. He knows that. Still, it’s disconcerting to learn that you’ve had a close eye on him in particular.
He operates from the shadows for a reason; he can’t have you jeopardizing that by shining a light on him. Five months into your new position, and already you have proven yourself to be dangerous.
As you wished for, silence reigns as the two of you turn into an alley and approach two flights of stairs, leading to the center of the city. Kaeya resists pressing a hand against the nearest wall for balance. He had walked down a stairway unaided just moments ago, despite how unsteady he felt. Surely ascending some steps would prove to be easier.
Rather than focus on his feet, he looks up ahead. From his position, he can just barely glimpse the blades of a windmill, ever-turning against the dark backdrop of the night sky. He keeps his gaze there as he climbs, his boots scraping against stone.
He clears the first flight of stairs with little issue. See? Nothing to it.
Halfway up the second, Kaeya stumbles.
His surroundings tilt, blurring as he fumbles for balance. It’s a futile effort. Thanks to how inebriated he is, his limbs are too heavy and uncoordinated. The stone below rushes up to meet him.
Before his face can greet it, however, you catch him.
Your side moulds against his, a hand clasping his hip while the other carefully grasps at his spiked pauldron. His gloved hand covers yours reflexively as his racing heartbeat settles. He feels you stiffen at the touch, but you don't pull away. Neither does he.
For a moment, not a word is spoken between you both. The alley is filled only with the soft sound of breathing.
Then you click your tongue. “So much for heading back by yourself. You can barely keep your feet under you.” Your voice lilts with humour.
He knows this song and dance. It has been ingrained in him after all these months. You snark at him, he snarks back. Rinse and repeat. Although this is the first time he has heard levity in your tone; the first time it has been aimed at him, that is. He almost hadn’t thought you capable of it.
He straightens with a chuckle. “First at the tavern, and now in an alley. I just keep falling for you tonight, don’t I?”
You blink owlishly. It takes a moment for the words to sink in. Then a flustered expression crosses your features, before you compose yourself. “You are unbelievable.”
He grins. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
You roll your eyes, even as the corners of your lips twitch. “You would.”
Kaeya expects you to move away, so the two of you can resume walking, but you don’t. “Not that I mind having your hands on me, but...will you be letting go any time soon?”
“That depends.” A challenging glint appears in your eye. “Can you handle walking on your own? Or do you need me to cradle you the rest of the way to headquarters, like some damsel?”
He guffaws, taken off-guard by the retort. A reply escapes his loosened tongue before he can think better of it, “Archons, that sounded just like him.”
“Like who?”
“My brother.”
In the past, despite being underage, he was sometimes able to charm bartenders at Angel’s Share—new hires unaware of how to deal with him as of yet—into serving him drinks. Diluc would find him eventually, a disapproving twist to his mouth, and put a stop to it.
Back then, Kaeya was a lightweight and had to be supported back to headquarters. Diluc would scowl and roll his eyes the entire way, but there was still a softness in his gaze. His hands were strong, but careful; Kaeya knew that his brother would not let him fall. He could even be persuaded to join in when Kaeya began to sing, their off-key voices disturbing the silence of the night.
Come morning, while Kaeya nursed the inevitable headache and Jean nagged him about violating the Knights of Favonius Handbook, Diluc would snort. “Serves you right,” he’d say, then hand him a draught for curing hangovers.
Now Kaeya must weather the pain alone.
You tilt your head to the side, your gaze fixed on his. “I had no idea that you have a brother,” you say softly.
Had, he nearly corrects. But he has told you too much already.
This is why he is so careful when drinking in the company of others. Alcohol is a double-edged sword; as delectable as it is, it also loosens inhibitions. It’s what he relies on when charming information out of allies and adversaries alike, none of them the wiser of what they have given up.
How the tables have turned.
“Well, now you do.” A trace of bitterness enters his tone.
You eye him, quiet, before pulling back. You motion forward with your chin. “Let’s keep moving. We’ll never make it to headquarters at this pace.”
Relieved by the subject change, he listens. He makes a conscious effort to place one foot in front of the other, gaze trained on the remaining steps below. You stay at his side, closer than you were before. He can feel your hand hovering at the small of his back, ready to catch him should he trip once more, but he ignores it.
It won’t happen again. He’ll make sure of it.
The alley opens up to a view of the market district. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have long to enjoy the reprieve. The two of you turn right, away from the railing overlooking the main square, to climb two more flights of stairs. A left, and more stairways await.
By the time the Knights of Favonius Headquarters looms above you, Kaeya’s legs ache from the walk. He is very much looking forward to retiring to his quarters.
The knights stationed outside stiffen at the sight of you and Kaeya, standing at attention. They perform a salute in perfect unison. Do they rehearse that before every shift? Surely they must.
The guard on the left, with the glasses and unfortunate haircut, chirps, “Good evening, Captains! I hope you are doing well.” He appears wide awake despite the late hour.
At least the one on the right looks appropriately haggard. “Welcome back,” he grunts.
While Kaeya brushes past them with a nod of acknowledgement, eager to head inside, you stop. “Good evening, Athos, Porthos. Your shift ends soon, I hope? It can’t be terribly interesting, standing watch outside headquarters so late.”
“It’s no trouble at all, Captain!” Athos, as you had referred to him, says. “Guard duty may not be glamorous, but it is still important.”
“Much as I agree with the lad, I can’t bring myself to be so damn cheerful about it,” Porthos sighs, his words tinged with self-deprecation. “Must be ‘cause of these old bones.”
“That’s not true, Sir Porthos. Your bones aren’t that old!” the younger knight argues, prompting the older to shake his head with a chuckle.
“Athos isn’t wrong,” you add. “You are far more sprightly than most knights I know.”
“If that’s true, then Mondstadt is in trouble.”
Smiling and shaking your head, you finally pass by them, climbing the short steps to return to Kaeya's side. He lifts a brow as he pulls on one of the large oak doors, holding it open for you.
It’s almost comical how quickly your smile disappears. Your eyes narrow as you enter inside. “What’s that look for?”
“Nothing,” he says breezily, following after you. The door falls closed behind you both with a loud, echoing thud. “Just that I didn’t know you were so chummy with the guards.”
It is blindingly bright inside the Knights of Favonius Headquarters, as if it isn’t nearing midnight. The sconces on the walls are lit up, as is the chandelier hanging in the center of the main hall. The two of you make your way towards the—joy of all joys—staircase. The barracks for knights are located on the second floor, and on the floor above that, separate quarters for the captains.
“I am off-duty right now. It’s not unprofessional for me to speak informally with them.”
His eye widens. “Why, I never said it was unprofessional, Captain.”
You grind your teeth so hard he can practically hear the enamel wearing away. “You implied it.” No, he didn’t. Your distaste for him has you imagining mockery where there is none. As if Kaeya has any room to judge someone for acting unprofessional.
“I did? That’s news to me.” Privately, he marvels at how easily he can agitate you. Him, no one else—he has observed you long enough to know your prickliness is reserved for him alone. Maybe that’s why he annoys you further instead of clearing up the many miscommunications that tend to occur. Not that you’ll believe him, even if he’s being completely honest.
You huff. “How the Dandelion Knight manages to put up with you, I’ll never know,” you mutter.
“How rude, Captain! Jean doesn’t put up with me, she considers me indispensable.”
You cut a look at him. “Yes, I’m sure she thought the same when you failed to show up to today’s meeting.”
“Must you bring that up again? I shudder just thinking of the lecture she’ll have ready for me in the morning. Perhaps my mysterious ailment should plague me for a little while longer...”
“Prolonging the inevitable will do you no favours.” You pause briefly, then add, “Ah, I almost forgot to mention. After the meeting, I ran into Inspector Eroch. He was waiting outside and asked after you. He seemed irked when I informed him that you were absent today.”
If Kaeya was not so skilled at masking his reactions, he would’ve perked up at that. He might have even stopped in his tracks or whipped his head around to look at you. But he knows better than to give himself away so obviously. He leisurely climbs the steps, his features revealing only vague interest. “Oh? Somehow I doubt he was upset out of concern for my wellbeing.”
You glance over. “I wouldn’t know. He did not say anything when I asked why he wanted to see you, or if I could pass on a message. He just brushed me off and left.”
“Don’t be hurt by his shameful conduct, Captain. I for one enjoy your company immensely.”
You ignore his thoughtful statement. “I thought that he might have had a prior engagement with you, which you missed due to being terribly ill.”
He shrugs. “If we did, I don’t recall it.”
That earns him another look, longer than the one before. He doesn’t flinch away from it, his expression remaining serene. Privately, he wonders what you know. Are you merely intrigued by what Inspector Eroch might want with him? Or are you more aware than you’re letting on?
After all, Eroch is the one Kaeya has been secretly investigating for the past year.
Looks like the inspector has caught on. About time. No doubt he wants to figure out just how much Kaeya knows—which is not much, unfortunately. He knows that Eroch has more than just Mondstadt’s best interests in mind; a Fatui spy like him would have just the opposite. But he is unsure what the man is up to, or who he even is.
He does, however, have an inkling. Several, even.
Inspector Eroch had been insistent on covering up the details of Master Crepus’s death. For the good of Mondstadt, he claimed, not wanting the citizenry to lose faith in the Knights of Favonius. Grand Master Varka had ultimately sided with him. It resulted in Diluc resigning his position and leaving the city a year ago.
Kaeya had kept an eye on the inspector after that. He knew there was more to the situation than just preserving Mondstadt’s trust in the Knights, and it had everything to do with the dangerous and evil power Master Crepus had harnessed. It was only a matter of figuring out what. And once he has all of the information...
Well, he knows what Diluc would do, once upon a time. Blazing with righteous fury, he’d take his findings to Grand Master Varka, insisting on Eroch’s arrest and expulsion from the Knights of Favonius. He would see it as retribution for how poorly his father’s death had been handled.
But Kaeya suffers from no delusions. Maybe he looked into Eroch because of Master Crepus. Maybe he wanted some kind of revenge for what happened. Maybe he yearned to atone for his past inaction. None of that means he has any heroic intentions.
If it serves his interests better, he won’t expose the inspector immediately. He will hoard his knowledge instead, keeping his cards close to his chest until it’s the right time to play them.
That is how he has always operated. Master Crepus's death and Diluc's departure have not changed that. For a brief, nonsensical moment, he wishes they had. Then common sense returns to him. A foolhardy sense of justice is of no use to him. He’ll leave that to Diluc.
While he extricates himself from his wayward thoughts, you turn away to clear the last few steps. “If it is important, surely he will try to approach you again,” you say.
“I look forward to it with bated breath.”
You scoff, rightfully skeptical, but don’t respond. Clearly, you are content to leave it at that.
He wonders at how easily you let the subject drop. Had you suspected something, you would have pushed to learn more, wouldn’t you? Now is as opportune a time as any; it’s late, he’s tired and drunk, and the both of you are alone. Does that make you oblivious, or an idiot, or crafty?
Having made it to the third floor, the two of you make your way down the hallway. His quarters are before your own, three doors on the left. He stops in front of his door, reaching into one of many hidden coat pockets to produce his key.
He glances at you. You have yet to leave for own your room. “You don’t have to hover at my side, you know,” he says with a touch of amusement. “I may be tipsy, but I am no longer in any danger of being harassed by ruffians or passing out in the streets. Unless you're secretly harbouring nefarious intentions towards me, Captain.”
“You’ll just have to wait and find out,” is your unruffled response.
Chuckling under his breath, he unlocks his door and lets it swing open wide. It’s dark inside, faint moonlight shining through the small window above his desk. Coupled with the sconces out in the hallway, however, there is enough light for him to stumble to his bedside without stubbing a single toe. He doesn’t bother to close the door on you; he has nothing to hide.
Kaeya knows what his quarters must look like to a stranger. They’re a mess, as if someone had searched them in a haste and not bothered to clean up afterward. The walls are bare, save for a map of Mondstadt that he’d hung up ages ago. Tomes of all sizes and loose leaves of parchment litter his oak desk, pushed up against a wall. A quill lies abandoned atop a half-finished note with ink drying on its nib. His closet door is cracked open, a discarded boot dissuading anyone from forcing it shut.
Yes, his quarters are a mess. But he knows exactly where everything is. Should someone actually attempt to search his things, he would know immediately. Not that they would find anything particularly damning. He isn’t foolish enough to leave important documents or sensitive information lying about—nothing he is unwilling to part with, anyway.
“Horrifying, but unsurprising,” he hears you mutter to yourself.
Kaeya doesn’t even consider slipping out of his ruined clothes or engaging you in further conversation. Now that he has made it back to his quarters, all he can think about is the sweet embrace of sleep. He sinks into his unmade bed, draping an arm over his face.
You continue to linger in the doorway. “You should change before you fall asleep.”
“Mhm.”
“You'll regret not doing so in the morning.”
“Uh-huh.” He still doesn’t move.
“Alberich. You stink of booze.”
“You sure know how to compliment a guy, Captain. I’m impressed.”
You sigh, long and loud. He waits to hear the door close behind you, only for you to walk up to his bedside. Your steps are slow, hesitant yet purposeful. He stiffens, immediately on-guard, but fights his instincts in order to remain still. What are you planning?
He feels you grip his boot. Metal jingles as you undo the buckle. Then you pry it off.
He lifts his arm to peer up at you. “What are you doing?”
“What does it look like?” You set his boot on the ground, then move on to the other one. “If you won’t change, you should at least take off your shoes. You’ll dirty your sheets otherwise.”
Oh, you make it so easy for him to twist everything you say into an innuendo. For once he resists the urge. “You forgot something,” he says instead. He wiggles his sock-clad foot at you. Just to see if you will do it.
You grimace, swatting his leg away. “Absolutely not. I don’t want to be anywhere near those.”
So you say. But you’re taking his boots off for him out of your own volition. There is no need for you to do any of this. It’s not your duty to stop him from drinking himself into a stupor, or walk him back to headquarters unharmed, or all but tuck him into bed. Yet here you are.
What is it that you want? There have been plenty of opportunities for you to try and take advantage of his drunken state, but you have sidestepped every one. Frustration brews in his sternum.
“Do you do this for everyone who you hate?” he finds himself asking, tone purposely lighthearted.
You pause in your ministrations to stare at him. “What? I don't hate you.” At his disbelieving look, you insist, “I don’t. You have always been a pain to deal with, sure, but I never once felt that way.”
He smiles, unconvinced. “Not even when I insulted your dear old captain?”
“Insulted my... That was months ago, when we first met.” Despite your bewilderment, you take a moment to contemplate his question. “I was upset with you, yes. But now that I’ve had this position for some time...maybe your assessment wasn’t off. When I was lieutenant, I didn’t always see eye-to-eye with my captain. They were too set in their ways and scorned most criticism. I respected them, and still do, but I shouldn’t be ignorant of their faults.”
Your gaze meets his once more. “In a way, what you said that day led me to realize that. You weren’t badmouthing my captain; you didn’t have a vendetta or want to get a rise out of me. At least, I don’t think you did. You must have legitimate issues with their leadership, as a captain yourself.”
He watches you shrewdly. Your tone was even, your expression clear. He cannot detect any deception from you. Of course, that means little. Still, perhaps you’re telling the truth. Perhaps you don’t hate him after all.
A headache, newly formed, pounds at his temple. If he were more sober, he would be better equipped to handle such a revelation. He’ll have to come to a proper conclusion later.
You fiddle with the buckle on his remaining boot. “And what about you?”
“Hmm? What about me?”
“You have ample reason to look down on me. Most of the knights know that you aren’t just Cavalry Captain and Quartermaster. Your role is more important than that. Surely you would make a better...” you trail off, your jaw working silently.
Kaeya knows how that sentence ends. Surely you would make a better Captain of the Intelligence Team than me. It doesn’t come as a surprise.
Up until now, he thought he knew you well. You made it no secret you loathed him. You have never said so explicitly, but he has a talent for reading people. It’s a classic case of envy. He has seen it many times before. You compare yourself to him and find yourself wanting. It colours the way you interact with him; your words brusque, your gaze narrowed.
Not only did he insult your captain, but you consider him more capable than you. Your hatred makes sense. It’s predictable.
Or so he believed, until tonight.
“You know what, never mind. Forget I asked.” Uh-oh. Seems he took too long to respond. You busy yourself with unbuckling his boot, avoiding his eye.
If he were to be honest, there are many ways he could answer you. He thinks you are a better captain than your superior could ever hope to have been. He thinks you are a leader capable of inspiring undying loyalty in your officers. He thinks you have a deep, unflinching love for Mondstadt and its people. He thinks you constantly push yourself to greater heights, to the point it lights a fire in him as well.
He admits to none of those things, in the end.
“Give yourself some credit, Captain,” he murmurs. You glance over in surprise. He meets your gaze. For perhaps the first time in a while, he hopes his words sound sincere—not because he doesn’t mean them, but because he does. “I know the officers under your supervision think you’re a good leader. They wouldn’t want anyone else to take your place.” Certainly not someone like me.
Instead of reassuring you, however, his answer seems to do the opposite. You look frustrated. “That isn’t what I...” you trail off. You search his features, silent, before your brow furrows. “I can’t tell if you mean what you just said. Sometimes I’m not sure I ever can.”
He takes care not to allow his features to visibly harden. Of course you would doubt him, the one time he tries to be honest with you. What else did he expect? Maybe you don't hate him, maybe you never have, but that means little. You won’t ever fully trust him. To be fair, the feeling is mutual.
His mouth tastes unbearably bitter. It must be the wine.
“At this point, I’m willing to say just about anything if it’ll mean I can get some shut-eye.” He feels no satisfaction upon seeing your shoulders stiffen. He still manages to grin. “Well, Captain? Any other requests?”
“No,” you say. Then you tug off his boot with a brisk motion.
He stifles a yelp. “Hey, now! No need to be so rough.”
“My sincere apologies.” You set the boot down next to his other one, your lips thinned. “I should go. Wouldn’t want you to lose more sleep than you already have. You have a long day ahead of you tomorrow, after all.”
Talk about vindictive. Despite his irritation, he has to fight a smile. Knowing you, you’ll see it and take it the wrong way, as you usually do.
Having finished removing his boots, you turn and walk for the door without another word.
He’s struck with the odd urge to stop you. To reach out, take your hand in his, and tug you back. Not because he wants something from you, or needs to tell you something. He wishes you would stay a little longer, that’s all. Wants the silence to be filled by your voice instead of his thoughts.
Now he knows he’s had too much to drink. He’s contemplating such ridiculous things.
Before his addled mind can catch up and he can say something, apologize perhaps, you shut the door behind you. Your footsteps travel down the hallway, slightly hurried. The door to your quarters creaks open then closed.
He’s too late. It’s for the best.
Kaeya lies back and stares up at the ceiling. His vision swims, as if he’s adrift at sea. Closing his eye only makes it worse.
His mind pores over the events of the day. Investigating Eroch, remembering Master Crepus and Diluc, visiting the tavern, running into you. He feels restless, pulled in several directions at once.
With a harsh exhale, he rises to his feet and locks his door. Then he begins his nightly ritual.
His pauldron is first to go. It hits the floor with a dull noise. Then he peels off his gloves and tosses them on the desk. The burns on his hands have long since healed, but he still deals with numbness now and then. Not many know they even exist; he doesn’t want anyone taking advantage of a potential weakness. His eyepatch follows closely after.
He removes the Cryo Vision from his belt last. He stares at it, its blue glow washing over his scarred palm and turning his skin a sickly brown hue. If it’s been a year since Master Crepus’s death, it has been about a year since he was gifted a Vision as well. The sight of it has been a hard reminder ever since. Of how he’d won a difficult battle. Of how he’d finally revealed the truth. Of how he can never speak it again.
He tucks the Vision under his pillow, then collapses back into bed. An odd sensation fills him, as it does every time he completes this ritual. It’s like he has taken off every scrap of armour he has and foolishly exposed himself to danger, despite being alone in the stillness of his quarters.
Ignoring the uncomfortable feeling, he closes his eyes and waits for sleep to take him under.
It never does.

Note: This is based purely off of fan theories, my own predictions, and knowledge of the game as it is currently. It will include spoilers for the “We will be reunited” archon quest if you have not gotten that far into the story yet. As well as hints of lore from the Honkai Impact game. This is in no way in indication of the game’s ending and should be taken as merely a fan based prediction/theory of one of the many possibilities of this story’s ending. Please enjoy! (This turned out longer than intended-)
Let me know if you want to see more to this au type thing. I’d gladly write about Diluc and Kaeya reconciling and seeing each other as brothers again as well as other stuff with the characters!
"Home"
★★★
The traveler had gained the former power back, their hand retracting from their resonance with the holy statue. Their friends stood around them, watching with widened eyes which hold a burning amazement. The traveler’s power unlike any they have ever seen.
Wings stretch to their sides to bask in the moon’s godly light. An ethereal glow began to emanate around their being as if they too had taken the form of an archon. Each element’s swirl could be felt within their body, bringing forth a familiar feeling. Near completion.
With their power restored once more, their feet landed back to the ground. Sword in hand, they turned back to their friends. From adepti to everyday workers, the traveler has gathered their closest and very best known fighters and friends to help them.
The battle was approaching, yanking every breath of fresh air and common sense from the traveler. Their friends would be fighting faceless beings. People turned to monsters. Who couldn’t be saved.
But the traveler couldn’t hold the same courage they could. On the other side of the battlefield stood their sibling. Their twin. Flesh and blood who they have traveled worlds together with. And they would fight. Archon forbid, to the death.
A shaky breath left their lips, eyes closed shut after gazing harshly at the ground for too long. Feeling a hand placed on their shoulder pulled them back to reality before they could spiral further into fear’s welcoming grasp. Looking back at the owner of the limb, they could finally find a clear breath to fill their lungs.
Venti’s sorrowful smile pierced the traveler. A silent understanding blew through their hair, sending golden wisps in different directions. Archons forbid death.
Taking a step back, the wind god left a lingering warmth upon the traveler’s shoulder. He made his back to where the other archons stood, powerful grace dawning him as the traveler had never seen before. A true god ready to fight a war once again.
The traveler took a sigh, grasping any courage they could find before turning their gaze to their friends.
“Alright, so as you all probably know, The Abyss Order has finally risen.” Their voice shook, cracking every other word. They cleared their throat before continuing.
“We were unable to prevent them from creating what is essentially a mechanized god. However, this does not mean we are doomed!” The traveler looked upon the sea of faces. Fear, shock, and suppressed somber mixed together.
How could they let this happen? It was never supposed to come to this. Dragging their friends into a war. Starting a war to begin with! Children stood among the crowd. While they may be talented vision holders, they were still too young to face this. But they still insisted. Pleading with the traveler to let them help. And they let it happen.
Their breath began to shorten again, tears fighting their usual calm composure. They could feel themselves spiraling once more. How could they let this happen? Let it get this far? Let children-
A voice broke them from their thoughts yet again.
“Traveler!”
Looking over to the figures running around the outside of the crowd, they saw four familiar Knights Of Favonius growing closer. Amber waved her hands high to grab their attention as the small group approached.
“Mondstat has been evacuated, all of the citizens are being led to Liyue by the knights of Favonius.” Amber smiled, reassuring the Traveler of innocents’ safety.
“Great, and the people of Liyue?” The traveler asked, redirecting their attention to Jean.
“Safely protected by a shield covering the harbor.” The woman smiled. “But if worse comes to worse, you can’t forget that both cities’ people are still able to fight. While Mond has the Knights of Favonius, Liyue has the Qixing. Each nation has their own means of defense, so trust us, Traveler. Even Schneznaya has the Fatui.” Jean’s grin grew wider, excited pride slipping through her calm mask.
The traveler smiled back, chuckling at their own worry. “You’re right, they should all be able to hold their own and protect each other, with Visions or not.” They turned back to the crowd, Amber, Lisa, Jean, and Kaeya now by their side.
“Now, as we stand, the Abyss Order is marching our way. Their movements may be unpredictable to us, but we know this land better than they do. It definitely won’t be easy,” the traveler took a quick breath, heart weighing heavier in their chest. “But The Regions of Teyvat will triumph today.” The crowd’s cheers roar through the field.
“Nicely said, Honorary Knight,” Jean turned to the traveler, smiling proudly at them.
“Ya know, I didn’t think you had such a thing in you,” Kaeya mused, patting their shoulder.
“To be honest,” the short blonde chuckled,” I was totally speaking out of my ass there.” Their light grin faltered, falling into uncomfortable worry.
“I know it’s hard, but you’re not alone, traveler,” Jean placed a hand on their shoulder, sympathy painting her features.
“We’re all here for you,” Lisa gave them a quick, meaningful hug. “Besides, what would I do without my little helper~.” The traveler let out a light laugh, however, the easy moment couldn’t compete with the bubbling anxiety filling their lungs.
Air weighed heavily.
Gentle breezes turned to cold gusts.
“May the archons protect us.” Jean prayed, stepping away to rally her section of the Knights. Lisa and Amber followed suit, preparing their squadrons both mentally and physically.
Kaeya remained by the blonde’s side, gazing at the crowd with an unreadable expression.
“Are you going to be okay?” The traveler’s question broke him from his thoughts.
“Yeah,” he chuckled, a piece of his mask beginning to slip. “I understand.”
The traveler’s face morphed into confusion. Understand? Understand what? What could Kayea, a man of many eloquent words, mean by such a short, vague statement?”
The man chuckled again.
Another crack in his mask.
His eyes drifted to Diluc, then to Dainsleif. Crack.
A sigh escaped his lips, forcing his smile to fall sour.
Crack.
His gaze fell to the floor, watching his now fallen, damaged mask lay among the dancing grass as if it had separated from a slain hilichurl.
The man who stood before the lost twin was not the same flirty and mischievous Knight of Favonius they had met all those months ago.
This man was Kaeya. A Khaenri’ahn who’s life was ripped away by the archons themselves. A man sent to create a downfall of other nations in retaliation for the onslaught of his country’s people. Kaeya Alberich. Khaenri’aian survivor.
His gaze drew from his Mond identity laying idly by his feet, to the traveler. “I understand why you’re scared.” Tears brimmed in the man’s eyes, a glint of fear sparkling in his pupil.
All previous disdain for the people who had fallen seemed to hide, a glimpse of it remained hiding beneath his eyes. But it soon became evident to the traveler, whatever conversation he had with Dainsleif, was enough to inject guilt and sympathy within his veins. But still not enough to instill total remorse.
A silent understanding passed between the two. No words passed through the air between them.
Despite being humans turned monsters, despite Kaeya’s place of blame on his people, they were still victims of the Cataclysm.
The traveler placed a hand on their friend’s shoulder. They sent a quick smile, opening their mouth to speak, only to be interrupted.
“Hey, traveler!”
Turning their head to the sound of their name, they were met with a certain ‘tone-deaf’ bard.
Kaeya nodded with a slight smile, turning away and walking in the direction of his brother.
“Are you ready?” The archon’s voice was soft, contrasting from his usual high pitched giggles.
The traveler had expected a witty one liner to help bring up their mood or a quick joke poking at their seriousness. However, the bard merely looked drained, eye bags lining his face with a somber expression painted over his soft features.
“I don’t know.” The words brush past their lips before they could think. Were they ready? They had to face their twin of all people. How could they be ready? “I plan to bring them back.” They stated. “To bring them home.” The traveler stared out into the crowd, watching people prepare.
“But will you be able to?” Venti stared intently at the ground as if it were his enemy. The question was aimed mainly at himself rather than the traveler and seemed to slip past him before he could stop it. He quickly shook away the thought, noticing the growing worry on the lone twin’s face. “Of course you will!” His mask was back up, a playful ‘hehe’ drawing past his lips.
“Yeah, I will,” the traveler breathed, a lie beautifully woven within the truth.
•~•
The city of Mondstat lay dim in the distance, the army of Knights and vision holders drifting further from home with each step.
Across the clear fields of Windrise stood monsters. Creatures from the Abyss wielding dark and power hungry gazes.
Many stared in disgust, watching the distant crowd draw closer. Other however, glanced at the group in pity, quickly averting their gazes to refocus their minds. Few knew the true story of the fallen nation 500 years ago, letting their hearts weigh heavy with sympathetic solitude.
Leading the enemy was a familiar figure. The Abyssal Royalty stood proud yet steeled away, gazing at their opponent from across the grassy pathway. Few stems of small lamp grass paved the way between both sides, guiding each distant traveler to meet their other half once again.
Away from their allies, the lost twins hesitantly stepped nearer. A temporary truce of peace passed between them, its wick quickly beginning to burn.
“Lumine,” Aether broke the evening silence. His voice held strong, only to be mocked by the hurt hidden beneath his golden eyes.
“Aether.” Lumine mimicked her brother, the same strong yet weak presence plaguing her voice.
A silent plea from both siblings rang through the surrounding air.
“We can leave, go home! Together..”
“My battle and your journey are yet to be over.”
“After all this time, you still keep saying things that make no sense. Who are you battling other than me?”
The traveler’s twin paused, momentarily shocked from their sibling’s words.
“I’m fighting those who tore us apart.”
The Abyssal twin’s gaze hardened, shifting into an icy glare which shot through their sibling’s heart. Oddly, the sharpened look seemed to pass through the traveler, aimed at a distant being among the crowd of Knights.
“Those who..” the traveler’s words drew thin, disappearing within the air.
A crackling rang through the air, drawing the twins and their respective allies’ attention. Three familiar diamonds tore through the sky, ripping an entrance for a rather infamous figure to emerge.
“Your journeys must end here, outlanders.” Golden eyes pierced the twins, an authoritative air emanating from the unknown goddess. “You’ve altered the weight of destiny from your first arrival, now you must own up to your actions.” With a flick of her hand, the god isolated the three, barriers blocking the view of both armies racing toward their leaders. Their screams fell silent as the last cube sealed them in, the last view being the face of Barbatos, reaching out in elegant mimicry of the day he tried and failed to rescue her. Once again, he wasn’t fast enough.
Within concealment, the twins readied their swords, tri-wings stretching after years of rest.
“Fight as long as you wish, but you will always come back to the same point. Failure.”
Upon hearing her words the twins launched forward, entering yet another intense dance with the god.
•~•
For what felt like hours, the three battled as they had once before, only with the twin’s new found strength to differ. The outlander’s feet hit the ground, enough adrenaline pumping to let them ignore the battered bruises.
The fallen goddess now lay still, defeated by the twins with the joint help of the archons’ powers. A wind-bearing bard tends to a scared girl, broken from the evil which once plagued her.
The abyssal twin gazed at their sibling in awe. A twinge of pain entered their chest at the thought of what they must have gone through trying to find them. How could they have so badly abandoned their own twin? Millions of questions and blame raced through their mind, blurring their vision with tears.
A name reached their ears. Was it theirs? Wait. It was from their twin. Why were they shouting his name? They were safe now.
The traveling twin rushed forward, pushing their other half out of the way and taking the incoming blow. They fell to the ground clutching their chest in pain. The cold felt strangely welcoming. Only, their hands filled with warmth. Now wasn’t the time to nap, but sleep’s comforting embrace wanted to engulf them. Closing their eyes for a second wouldn’t hurt.
•~•
Tears began to pour, outweighing the pellets of falling rain. “Please, wake up.” They cried, pain filling their chest with each second passing by. “We can go home now, the war’s over.” They hiccuped, silently denying an unreal truth.
“Majesty!”
“Honorary Knight!”
Shouts from either side could be heard, only to fall on the deaf ears of the traveler’s sibling. Upon viewing the sight, the surroundings fell silent. Not even the thundering sky could dent the area’s torturous quiet.
Holding their twin close to them, the abyssal sibling let tears slip through their grasp. “We can leave now, just like you wanted!” A small squeeze around their hand gave them hope, gasping with widened eyes.
Below them, the traveler forced their eyes into a squint. Their hand squeezed lightly within their sibling’s. “Home is wherever we are together.”
A sob left the abyssal twin’s lips, forcing a cry to echo in the pouring rain. “You’re right, we’re home! We’re together. We’re-.” Their twin’s grip loosened.
“Hey…,” the crying blonde nudged their other half. “Hey, wake up… we’re home.” Their nudges grew to hasty shaking. “Come on, wake up.” Sob.
“Wake up!” Sob. “Come back!” Crack.
The final thread holding the lone twin’s hope snapped, releasing a titlewave of buried emotions. Unsaid words of appreciation. Unplanned surprise hugs. Introducing new friends which they both longed for. Battle training in different worlds. Fulfilling their prophecy for this world. Long forgotten “I love you”s. Gone. With a stupid flick of a wrist.
The now lost twin sat alone, hand traveling through matted blonde locks stained with blood. As to who the red liquid belonged to, they hadn’t a clue.
Silence once again weaved through the solemn tension which hung frigid with every breath. Tears continued to stream down the outlander’s face, falling onto the face of their loss.
“Your majesty…” An abyssal mage floated steadily toward their ruler. Its words were phrased more as a question of fear rather than a statement.
Wordlessly, the Abyss Ruler began to stand, hooking their arm underneath the crook of their twin’s knees and their back. Their eyes didn’t leave the body now laying limp in their grasp. A hollow warning passed through the air as they slowly trudged to the wind Statue of the Seven.
The statue of Windrise was a signature point of Mondstat, the giant tree creating an elegant background for the stone monument. Windwheel asters lined the edge as anemo crystalflies drifted through the general breeze.
The now lone traveler placed their sibling down on the ground in front of the statue, kneeling beside them. Another broken sob left their lips, silently pleading with whatever remaining archon Teyvat had left to bring their twin back, punish them for their actions, kill them too, anything.
“Anything please,” they whimpered, eyes squeezed shut to prepare for any punishment the gods may bring. “Just don’t let them suffer for my mistakes. It should have been me. If only I was faster.”
The wind’s light breeze grew heavily, picking up into gental gusts of air. The change wasn’t enough to gain the attention of the traveler, however. Only a new voice entering their mind broke their distraught focus.
“Open your eyes, child.”
Doing as the voice said, the blonde was met with a young bard whose physical body seemed as if it was disintegrating. Patches of pale skin detached from the main vessel, floating upward toward Celestia only to vanish within the rays of the rising sun.
“Your twin will never be forgotten, and neither will you.” The bard outstretched his hand, an ethereal light seemed to emanate from him. “Your story will be remembered.” An empathetic smile dawned his lips, attempting to distract from the pain which glimmered beneath his gaze. An understanding of pain.
“Lord Barbatos?” The still kneeling traveler gazed up in awe at the god. “The wind archon?”
Light chuckles passed his lips. “Yes, only… I am no longer the archon of wind, merely another god whose time is finally up.”
“Please, punish me. I’ve only caused pain to the people of Teyvat.”
“No.”
“No?” The blonde whimpered.
“No, just please, come home.” The bard bent down in front of them, pushing a strand of hair from their face as he had 500 years ago.
Oh, how the beautiful fall.

KAEYA | ANGST ALPHABET
catcall die kidnapped time
Tumblr media
Kidnapped (you’re kidnapped)
Most people would say Kaeya would develop a strong alcohol addiction to forget that his lover went missing however I have to strongly disagree.
When Kaeya gets home and he can't find you anywhere he won't think much of it. Maybe you went to visit your family and forgot to tell him, or you're having a sleepover with a friend. On the outside, he seems calm as for the next three days he goes to work acting as nothing happened. But on the inside he is panicking, he gets his work done as soon as possible as he gets home just to sit down on a chair staring at the door. He Is waiting for the door to open and you to appear. He is sitting there for hours and hours.
After a week of you not appearing he blames himself for not reaching for help sooner as it may be too late to found you. He calls knight of favounius and citizens of mondstat goes in groups looking for you. Traveler makes missing posters trying to help at least a little bit.
Kaeya wants to forget you but he slowly loses interest in alcohol, it feels like it lost Its taste.
His public calm image is slowly breaking as his mind is filled with dark imaginations. He slowly forgets to eat meals or to keep himself hydrated.
Apart from Childe who gets obsessive filled with hope, Kaeya gets depressive knowing that there is no possibility you can be okay.
Jean first notices Kaeya's depression when she sees him standing in the middle of the hall. His eyepatch is missing his messy hair covering his eye. He wears only his white shirt as he is visibly confused.
The dehydration and sleep deprivation have a bad impact on him. Jean knows something is wrong and sends him home in order to take a break. Which does not help since Kaeya should have human interaction and get meds not be home.
Diluc gets worried as he makes meals for him carrying them to his house. The house is a mess as Kaeya is unable to clean which results in Dikuc quickly putting Kaeya's mess into the bin trying to clean up at least a little bit.
Kaeya, on the other hand, doesn't want to go to sleep but once he is asleep he doesn't want to wake up. He can't get out of his bed. Becoming more disoriented and slowly forgetting why he is sad in the first place.
He doesn't remember your face anymore, nor your name. He doesn't remember you at all.
And one morning when Diluc opens door to Kaeya's room holding breakfast to his surprise he finds Kaeya in his bed. Melatonin pills everywhere as he slowly realizes Kaeya overdosed himself.
But let's imagine you were found and you came home just before Kaeya got depressed.
You open the door with a crack quickly closing it as you finally feel safe. You were missing for almost three months yet since day one you were dreaming of the moment when you will be able to hug Kaeya again.
You look around finding your shared house slightly messy. The bin is filled with old food. The boxes on tables are also filled with untouched food. You wander around softly smiling at the pictures and decorations.
You pinch yourself just to be sure this is not one of the fantasies you always dreamed about. Opening one of the doors you walk in just to see Kaeya peacefully sleeping in pillows and blankets. His hair messy and his eyepatch still on.
You don't want to wake him up yet you're too excited to wait. You run to him as you hug him tightly. Sweet tears rolling down your cheeks as you sniffle Kaeya's scent.
Kaeya tries to push you away murmuring from his sleep before sleepily opening his eyes. They are dark as the ocean as the sparkles died down. His smirk wasn't decorating his face anymore. Instead, he sighed rubbing his eyes.
You would stroke his cheeks as you hold his chin softly. You're saying reassuring words while smiling with glossy eyes. He finally realizes that you're real. Grabbing your hands to squeeze them and peppering your face with many kisses.
And after a whole hour of hugging each other and you telling him about your kidnapper he decides to go to knights of favounius so they can throw your kidnapper into jail.
However, as he stands up you suddenly stop him as you look at his body. You can see how skinny he got, how his bones are seen, and how his skin is pale. Not to mention the blue hair on the pillow signalizing hair loss.
And you realize that he barely ate. That's why there were boxes with untouched food.
"Later, I'm hungry can we go for lunch first?" You smile brushing your thumb against Kaeya's hand as he nods.
- it would take some time for Kaeya to start taking care of himself again. But when you're with him he is willing to try.
- He will take a break to spend time with you as you cook together and clean the house later even going for a walk.
- eventually, give him few months and he will be healthy again.
Catcall (you’re catcalled and he’s with you)
Same as Diluc, Kaeya is well known and has a reputation. There is no way someone would catcall you on purpose. Yet let's imagine some drunk group catcalling you in front of your boyfriend.
This would go based on how bold they are.
1; if they will call you baby or any pet name maybe hinting something romantic. Kaeya will just chuckle as he is listening to them. He wouldn't get angry as he thinks it's funny how they try to flirt with you. "You should watch what you say, honorary citizens," he smiles as he is supporting his chin.
2; they would get more inappropriate or even try to touch you. This would make Kaeya slightly alerted. When they say something inappropriate he just slowly moves you next to you or into his lap. Or he has a hand around your waist. They will notice him and leave you alone. Yet if they continue even touching you he would be pissed. He doesn't want to make a scene yet he has to make a move. He stood up taking his sword pointing it at the drunk person's chest. He is glaring at that person as the person shivers apologizing. Kaeya's gaze is terrifying. But as soon as the person apologizes he hides his sword sitting next to you again.
The person will probably never come to the tavern again.
Time (you’re ill and only have a few months to live)
Kaeya started noticing that the last few days you didn't felt very well. And the symptoms you were experiencing were quite unique. Pale skin and black bags under the eyes because of insomnia. Hairloss and muscle pain. You not being hungry and constant vomiting. Scars and bruises randomly appearing on your skin.
His eyebrows were scrunched as he had a sad expression on his face. Yet every time you greeted him he quickly smiled and giggled pulling you into a hug and giving you lots of affection. You knew something wasn't right with you too, but you tough maybe it was an allergy or just some mental illness that could go away with few herbs.
Eventually, after the symptoms continuing Kaeya decided to visit Albedo. This resulted in you spending the whole weekend at Albedo's place. He took your blood and saliva, checking your bones and trying to massage the muscles. Taking detailed notes very carefully.
And when the tests were done and you got to know you're slowly dying as your organs are slowly collapsing, you couldn't do anything but blankly stare onto the wall. You felt hopeless. You knew you had few days to live before dying a painful death yet you weren't ready. All your dreams and goals were left in the dust.
Kaeya on the other hand couldn't believe it. He was following Albedo around asking him if It's true and how can he help you. He pinched himself several times, trying to get out of this nightmare. Kaeya grew desperate as he begged Albedo on his knees to make medication. Albedo would of course love to help but he didn't know how so he would dismiss Kaeya over and over.
Kaeya's wasn't mentally well. He would be obsessed with finding some medication. Contacting Baizhu from Lyuie. Spending all his money on different doctors and different people. He didn't even realize that at this time he should pay attention to you and go on dates with you. Instead, he was away in different nations looking for herbs and scientists.
Die (their reaction when you die/your reaction when they die)
And once Kaeya finally arrives home full of despair as he got few herbs but no medication he slowly walks around the room. But before he can hug you and reassure you and spend time with you he finds you on the floor. You were just taking few painkillers writing a diary entry as you collapsed eventually your organs giving in.
He would sit down in panic his eyes glossy as his breathing is slow. "Breathe, common please breathe, to the archons. Lord barbatos y/n breathe," he repeats himself over and over as tears roll down his cheeks. His hands shaking as he cheks your heartbeat.
Your body so cold and your eyes blank. Without a pinch of life. And that's when he breaks down.
Completely sobbing at your dead body. Brushing his hands over your skin as he peppers your face with kisses. "I'm sorry I didn't try harder, I'm useless, I'm a burden. I can't do anything right," he kisses you. But nothing.
You didn't wake up.
He kisses you again expecting you to wake up. In movies, they always wake up.
But this is not a movie.
This is a painful reality.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Diluc couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt so out of place, so lost yet certain at the same time. He definitely couldn’t recall the last time Kaeya had laughed so hard, that’s for sure.
He knew he shouldn’t have told the slightly taller male, it wasn’t surprising he reacted the way he did either. But now, Diluc could only regret his stupid decision and remind himself to never do this again. For once, he’d made a stupidly, idiotic choice...
He said he wouldn’t seek help so early, but touching down in reality after realizing he was going about this the wrong way, guided him straight into Kaeya’s waiting open arms. Kaeya on the other hand knew this day would come; when his older, aloof brother would come to him for guidance concerning a lover, it was just a matter of when.
“Seriously? The great ol’ Master Diluc, fretting over a woman?” Kaeya laughed condescendingly. “How... unfitting and unsettling.” He said.
The older of the pair folded his arms, eyes turning into slitted daggers. “Not all of us are... bold like you, twenty-four-seven might I add.” The wine tycoon grumbled.
He knew he’d regret this, he just knew it. Kaeya was twisting, pushing, and practically breaking every one of his buttons and he was basking in it pridefully. If he didn’t grow up, for once, be a little less annoying and a little more tolerable, Diluc would leave and seek help from Lisa; yes, maybe someone who he should’ve gone to first.
Kaeya blinked at his older brother, confused, before bursting out laughing, alerting a few patrons of Angel’s Share. “That’s called life, dear older brother, get used to it maybe and stop being a hermit.” Kaeya teased.
Bastard.
The redhead should’ve waited until closing time to get more privacy, but honestly, Diluc was growing impatient and he clearly wasn't acting rationally these days anyways; you were to blame for his loss of rationality.
“So what is this anyway? You shy or what.” Asked the Captain.
“Shy? Of course not,” Diluc stated, shifting behind the counter. “Would it not be weird for me to randomly approach her and say how I feel?”
A long stare and pause, before Kaeya, smacked his hand to his forehead. “Archons, you’re a lost cause,” He muttered to himself, downing his glass of wine. “It’s weirder anonymously, she probably thinks you’re a creepy stalker.”
“You’ll help me,” Demanded the wine tycoon, whispering lowly in hopes none of the drunk patrons heard him. “Or else you’ll have to start paying full price for alcohol.” Kaeya snickered to himself, staring at his older brother.
“Quarter.”
“I’ll settle for half if you assist me.”
“Threats, ey?” Kaeya smirked. “And would you look here, someone’s become quite the negotiator I see; other words, you’re just desperate.”
Maybe he was, he wouldn’t admit it though. That would just be a subject of more unwanted teasing.
“Are you going to help me or not? You’re wasting my time.”
“Where else do you have to be...” Kaeya grumbled under his drunken breath, Diluc still heard it but decided to ignore it. “I’ll still help you,” Diluc’s face relaxed, shoulders filling with relief. “You came to me for one reason; I have finesse with the ladies, you don’t. For my sanity, I’d prefer you not to be grumpy for the rest of your life.”
“Since I do have to put up with you, brother.”
“The feelings mutual.”
“Great!” The younger of the two snatched a nearby shot of a patron, ignoring the contents and patron's displeasure, before throwing it into the back of his throat. “Let’s start with your finesse and execution,” Kaeya said hopping off of the stool, swiftly turning towards the door. “You have neither.”
“I forgot how embarrassing you were,” Diluc muttered, sending apologetic glances towards the two young women walking away.
“Embarrassing? How so?” Kaeya raised a brow, eye squinting in mockery.
Diluc eyed him dumbfoundedly, before folding his arms and straightening his broad shoulders. “For starters, one of them had a husband, she was clearly uncomfortable and the other looked like she wanted to sock you in your face; I can’t blame her.” He stated.
“Figures, you can’t read women at all. Why am I even trying?” The Captain asked himself. “Right, because I’m a good brother,” He snapped his finger for effects. “One, Dalia’s husband is an incompetent prick. Secondly, Claire is just mad because I stood her up; that’s normal, they all love me otherwise.”
He even knew their names? Archons, what a damn womanizer.
“Yeah, seems like it,” Diluc said sarcastically. “You have no shame.”
“The ladies love that!” Kaeya defended. “You wouldn’t know... Even though you have swarms of women after you all the time - fangirls - you’re as dumb as a damn hilichurl.” Kaeya insulted, patting his older brother on the shoulder before trotting off. Diluc followed closely behind, like a lost child.
“Oh, by the way. About those fangirls, get rid of them, somehow,” Diluc listened, hanging onto every word. “You’ll lose Y/n when she learns about them; women get jealous too.”
“...Noted...”
The rest of the afternoon, the two anti-heroes with attitude problems (as Kaeya had always called them) shamelessly flirted with practically any willing person they could find. Let’s get one thing straight though, Diluc stood behind his brother and watched him get rejected a handful of times and even score a date that he said he would not be showing up to.
What a womanizing heartbreaker, Diluc thought. Flirting, winning a date, and then basically throwing them to the side. Unbelievable.
Diluc on the other hand didn’t take part in the flirting, even if it was good practice like Kaeya had said. One, it was never good to take anything his younger brother said seriously, he often played cruel jokes and basked in the sun afterward after someone else’s downfall, pride still intact. And secondly, was the redhead's love for you. He felt as though he’d be cheating, unfaithful, even if you didn’t know of his affections and adoration for you.
-
“Now, remember what I said?” Kaeya said, standing straight in front of the Dawn Winery’s wide double doors.
The redhead's eyes rolled. “How could I not? Your annoying voice repeated it the whole way here,”
“By the way,” Diluc started. “You didn’t need to escort me home. I don’t need protection, especially from the likes of a Knight of Favonious.”
“Come on, that’s no way to thank your dear little brother!” Kaeya teased.
“I don't necessarily care what happens, I just wanted to make sure you understood, so I don’t have to waste my day's training you like the amazing teacher I am.” Diluc scowled.
“Where exactly do you have to be?” Mocked Diluc, sending the jab because of what his brother had also said earlier.
Kaeya laughed, beginning to walk towards the path that would lead back to the town.
“Important, mysterious, matters that don’t concern you.” He waved, thankfully disappearing into the dark.
For once in his life, Diluc thinks he’d quite enjoy the nullifying taste of alcohol.

Trust Fall
Warnings: Description of a panic attack
Venti x GN!Reader
2k Words
Venti helps you get over your fear of heights.
Tumblr media
Things started out alright. You were at Angel’s Share with some friends, relaxing after a long day of work. “Jean works us to the bone. And I can’t even be mad at her! She does so much too,” you groan. Kaeya and Amber nod in agreement.
“I know how you feel,” Amber sighs. “Sometimes I really wish I could be mad about it but we’re so short on hands that she just can’t help it.”
“I’d almost blame Grand Master Varka, but he’s just too likable,” Kaeya commiserates. You all simultaneously take a good, long sip of your drinks.
“Wow, you guys look awful,” someone behind you comments. Amber glances over her shoulder.
“Oh, hi Venti,” she replies. “Sorry, we didn’t see you there.” You turn in your seat to see your boyfriend, Venti standing there. It looks like he’d just finished performing for other patrons and was ready to get some drinks himself.
He slid into the seat next to you and waved to Diluc, who was managing the bar himself tonight. “Dandelion wine, please,” he called out excitedly. Diluc rolled his eyes but slid a drink over to him and walked to the other end of the bar to serve other customers. Venti hummed in delight as he took a swig of his wine.
“You sure like dandelion wine a lot, huh Venti,” Amber remarked.
“Of course I do, it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he proclaimed with a smile.
“And here I thought your partner here was the best thing that ever happened to you,” Kaeya mused loudly.
“Them too,” Venti agreed. “Both of them have a special place in my heart. I love them a whooooole lot!” You hid your face in your hands and groaned, hoping no one noticed your ears turning red.
“You know, if you’re doing that much maybe you should take some time later to relax and have fun,” Venti observed.
“Maybe we could go gliding together or something.” Amber considered it, but then noted, “That wouldn’t really work, with your partner being afraid of heights and all.” You pulled your head out of your hands to glare at her.
Thankfully Kaeya seemed to be too busy flirting with someone to have heard what Amber had said. Convincing him to keep it a secret would have been much harder. Glancing at Venti you noticed him looking at you, thoughtful and concerned. He’d definitely heard and you were definitely not ready to deal with that right now.
“Amber, I thought we agreed not to talk about that,” you whispered not-so-quietly.
“Oops,” Amber said sheepishly. “I forgot you were keeping that a secret.”
“It’s fine,” you sighed. “They know now so there’s nothing we can do about it. Just keep your mouth shut about it from now on please.”
She nodded vigorously. “I promise,” she assured you.
Kaeya seemed to have completely forgotten about you, chatting with yet another group, this time half-way across the bar. With your friends gone you took another sip of your drink and turned your attention back to Venti. He still looked contemplative, and it was starting to make you nervous.
Amber finished off her drink with a gulp. “Well, I’d best be heading home now,” she admitted. “I have to get up bright and early tomorrow.”
“Alright, sleep well then,” you wished her. “And get home safe.” She responded with a big smile and a ‘thank you’, and headed home.
“What’s on your mind, Venti?” You asked nervously.
“Are you really afraid of heights?” He asked.
“Well, kind of,” you confessed. “It’s honestly more like a fear of falling, to be honest. I’ve noticed that I rather enjoy the view when I’m confident I won’t fall.” He nods in understanding.
“And I guess gliders don’t really look all that trustworthy,” he ponders out loud. You nod sheepishly.
You consider your options, but keep coming back to how he seemed to have a longing look in his eye when he mentioned wanting to go gliding with you. He really did want to go. And he’d done a lot of things for you that he hadn’t really wanted to do. Maybe you could give this a try. Just for him.
“Well, do you think you could trust me?” He asks. You send him a funny look.
“Of course I trust you, you’re my boyfriend.” You explain exasperatedly.
“No, no,” he said, shaking his head, “that’s not what I meant. I meant to ask if you would trust me to not let you fall.”
“Why do you ask?” You inquire nervously.
“Well, I would like to go gliding together sometime and I was thinking maybe I could help you feel better about doing it. Y’know, since I have an anemo vision and all. I could help keep you from falling."
---
“Alright,” you sighed. “I’ll give it a try.” The smile he gave you in response was almost enough to make it worth it all on its own.
“Thank you,” he exclaimed as he reached over to drag you into a hug. “I promise you won’t regret it!”
You regretted this already. Venti chattered excitedly as the two of you made your way up to the place he’d decided to glide from. Apparently it wasn’t as high up as some other places, according to him, and you were really grateful for how considerate he was being, but you still felt really, really nervous.
There weren’t just butterflies in your stomach, there were all sorts of other creepy crawlies that sent a shiver down your spine as you thought about what was going to happen soon. Taking a deep breath to calm your nerves, you continued to follow Venti up the slope. Your heartbeat pounded in your ears as you tried to not look over the edge to your left.
You made it to the spot much too soon in your humble opinion. Daring a glance over the ledge, you could feel yourself pale as you saw how small the trees looked. Without realizing it you started to breathe faster, slipping into hyperventilation with panic seeping into your bones and suddenly you couldn’t breathe. Visions of every way this could possibly go wrong flashed through your mind.
A hand on your shoulder brought you back to reality. Venti had maneuvered you into a seated position and was gently humming a tune that you recognized to be one of your favorites. “Hey, come here, it’s alright,” he murmured softly. Shuttering, you tucked yourself closer to his side and closed your eyes. Focusing on your breathing you started to calm down. In, one two three. Out, one two three. In, one two three. Out, one two three.
When you had finally calmed down you chanced a glance at Venti, ashamed of your sudden reaction. Would he be angry? Maybe frustrated? Upset that you weren’t trying hard enough to do something he wanted to do? But when you actually met his eyes you saw nothing other than pure concern and worry.
“Are you okay if I hug you?” He cautiously asked. “I really want to help in any way I can but I know that sometimes people don't want to be hugged and need space and I don’t want to make things worse for you-” You cut him off by pulling him into a hug yourself. He carefully, slowly wrapped his arms around you and gently held you- not so tight as to make you feel trapped but not as loose as to make you think he didn’t want to hug you.
Pulling away quickly, you wiped the tears from your eyes. “No, no,” you exclaimed, “if you want to do this then I want to do this. Besides, I’ll have to face my fear sometime. And what better time to do it than when I have someone I trust there to catch me if something goes wrong.” A watery smile makes its way onto your face, your tears not quite ready to leave yet.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered to him. “I know you really wanted to do this and I’ve messed it all up.” Your eyes were moist. You blinked. And you could feel tears start to roll down your cheeks.
“Shhh,” he whispered, “there’s nothing to apologize for. You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to, I love you and want you to be happy. And if that means we don’t go gliding together, that’s okay.”
“How, uh, how exactly do I hold this again?” You inquire sheepishly. Venti quietly laughs a little, stands up, and walks over to you. He gently adjusts your hold and explains how to use the glider for what’s probably the twentieth time. Holding tightly to the glider you walk a little closer to the edge.
“Are you sure? You really, really don’t have to,” he said as he wiped some tears from your eyes.
“I’m sure,” you stated, determined to give this a try. For him.
“Alright,” he said softly, “just let me know when you’re ready.” You nod, take a deep breath, and stand up. Picking up your glider you turn it over in your hands.
Backing up some first, you started running and, closing your eyes first, you jump off the edge. “Open your eyes if you can,” Venti called to you. “The view is half the fun!” Then you heard him whoop as he jumped off the ledge to follow you, his glider already out and ready to catch him. You cautiously open one eye, then the other, as you choose to trust Venti and admire the view.
“Alright,” you start a little shakily. “How is this going to work?”
“Well, first you run to the edge and jump off the edge,” Venti describes. “Then you hold onto the glider until you reach the ground. I’ll make sure the wind doesn’t bother you.” You nod, determined to do this.
Just like Venti promised, no winds blew you off course. With his help and your trust in him, you somehow felt safe knowing that he could and would catch you if you fell. Because of this you were able to actually enjoy the view. He was right, it was beautiful and a lot of fun to see it grow as you gently glided towards it.
Eventually, and much too soon for your liking, you touched down to the ground. You fell to your knees and thanked Barbatos for your safety and for your amazing boyfriend. Even though you had been able to trust Venti, you felt yourself shaking from both remaining fear and the adrenaline running through your veins. You could feel more than hear Venti touching down behind you and jogging over to you.
“Are you okay? What did you think?” He asked carefully. You looked up at him and smiled.
“I think,” you said slowly, “that we’ll have a lot more gliding dates in the future.” He beamed and pulled you into a hug, pressing a kiss to your temple.
“I’m glad,” he whispered, “I’m really glad that you trusted me enough to give this a try. And I’m glad that you enjoyed it too.”
You grin and pull away again, this time completely. You laugh as he pouts at you, before picking up your glider and running back towards the slope. “Ready to go again? I bet I can make it back up first!” You tease him. His pout turns into a grin as he grabs his glider and chases after you. And that’s how the two of you spend the rest of the day.
You smile and pull back a bit to kiss him on the cheek and smile up at him. “Thank you for helping me overcome my fear, Venti. You’re the best partner ever.”
He blushes, pulls you back into the hug, and whispers in your ear, “No, thank you. You’re truly the best thing that’s ever happened to me, dandelion wine doesn’t hold a candle to all you mean to me. Thank you so much for being my partner.”

Let’s Slip Away: Diluc x Fem Reader: Childhood Best Friend Au

Diluc x Reader
Lets Slip Away
The annual Dawn Winery Masquerade Ball, the biggest ball this side of Mondstat, or it used to be. Thankfully, Diluc had successfully scaled the ball down in size a little more with each passing year. Still, it didn't make much of a difference with the ballroom still being packed tight. No matter how the guest list shrunk, people found a way to take up the same amount of space as before. There's nothing I loved more than a dance, but it was the people I couldn't stand. Everyone liked to pretend they were an evil aristocrat once their identity was concealed. A fancy dress, a decorative mask, and a new hairstyle, and everyone felt invincible. It was the same thing every year; they'd order the staff around, drink till they lost control, and leave the manor a mess. It was deplorable.
After watching a woman toss a glass on one of the maids, I lost my cool. I may or may not have tossed my grape juice on the women in retribution. The maid couldn't do it, so I had to use my position as "Master" Diluc's best friend to get away with it. What I didn't expect was for the lady's husband to toss not just the wine but the whole glass at my face. While the glass didn't bust when the base hit my head, it did leave a notable bruise, and the wine soaked through my hair, mask, and dress.
Elzer stepped in immediately to settle the issue, and instead of sticking around to get a lecture, I slipped into the garden. Hiding between several grapevines. I listened to the music pour from the house above and pouted. If I had played my cards right tonight, I would have been dancing in an empty corner with Turner or maybe even Diluc if he was free. He always saved the last dance for me. When the party started to clear a little, we'd stay in my favorite corner and have a quick dance while he whispered about he'll find a way to have the event canceled next year. But no, I was being eaten by mosquitos fighting off a headache.
Holding my mask between my hands, the once white fabric had stained dark red. Even my cream dress was littered with splotches that wrecked of dandelion wine. Sucking in my lower lip, I held back a sudden wave of sadness. It settled into my bones and swept through my limbs in a jitter. Why was I so sad? I avenged the maid and did the right thing… but my chest ached.   Curling around myself, I tucked my head between my lap. There was a time and place for crying, and a party wasn't one. Yet, there I was, sobbing into the fancy gown Diluc had hand made for me. Of course, he wouldn't be mad at me for what happened, but the guilt was eating me alive. I had ruined the evening for myself and made things harder on my friend. "There you are. I've been looking all over-. Hey, Elzer told me what happened, but he didn't mention a welt. How badly are you hurt?" Diluc pushed through the vines faster and hopped over the last row. He knelt beside me and carefully lifted my chin so he could see my face. "I'm just being a baby." I leaned back, the moonlight catching my skin. He ran his thumb over the knot on my forehead, and he clenched his teeth. "Damn bastard." He looked back at the mansion. "He might be wearing a mask, but there's only one person in Mondstat with monogram shoe buckles." "What?" I laughed; he was so serious, but the idea of a monogram shoe buckle had me drying up my tears. "Who pays for that kind of thing?" "Mr. Barker." Diluc wiped under my eyes. "Are you hurt anywhere besides your head?" "Besides the guilt of running the dress you got me and making the party harder for you to manage, I'm fine." I let it out. There was no use in pretending it wasn't bothering me. I had learned a lot about Diluc in our years of being together. While he was a very perceptive man when it came to solving crimes and putting things together, he didn't have the same skill for guessing how I felt. He's known something was wrong before, but he'd just find ways to blame himself if I didn't tell him. "I'll have you another dress made, and those Barkers aren't your fault. Ms. Barker started it, and I ended it. There's always a little drama at these events." He twirled my hair around his finger. "I'm sorry I wasn't there to stop it entirely." "Don't go blaming yourself now." I scooted so close; I was almost in his lap. "Let's just focus on the music or the sky. I know you'll have to go back in soon, so let's just relax for a moment." "Hmm, I can hear it from here. It's nice." A soft number started to play, and people passing by the window cast shadows into the courtyard. He leaned his head against mine. Minutes passed by, and the song changed, both of us just settling our nerves. "So, I guess we won't have the last dance together this year." I hummed, the thought burning at the back of my mind. "I can't go back in there like this." I forced myself to laugh, trying to get it off my chest without sounding too sad. "We don't have to go back in. Elzer can handle the end of the night speech for me, like every year." Diluc stood, reaching his hand out to me. "Milady, may I have this dance?" "Diluc…of course, you may." I pushed my insecurities down and gripped his rough hand. Being wealthy, Diluc had been trained in many different types of formal ballroom dances. When he was in the zone, there was no one but Kaeya who could match his prowess and aura. But I wasn't blessed with the same background. I was just the daughter of the maid, and while my mother was paid well, there wasn't enough money to pay for a dance instructor. However, Diluc taught me everything he knew. We use to spend hours after his class, practicing and gliding around the living room. After some time, I even got to join the classes as Diluc and Kaeya's partner. Creepus convinced my mother it was just good practice for the boys, but looking back, he just wanted me to get that experience as well. "You okay?" Diluc gently gripped my waist as I spun back into his arms. "Yes, I was just thinking about when you taught me how to dance." I closed the gap between us and started moving with the song. Diluc took charge after a few more movements, and I gave up trying to lead. It was always a fun game for us to try to take charge, but I normally gave in fairly fast. Every now and then, he'd let me lead, but I often stepped on his toes when I did.   The ground wasn't level as a dance floor, so it was easier to just follow Diluc. Since he took the first step, he was able to find the best footholds. When we did hit a small hump, we'd steady each other and share a small smile. It wasn't a seamless performance like when we were on solid ground, but it was fun. It also gave us a reason to cling tighter to each other. His broad chest was always so warm; there was nothing more pleasant than laying my head there and closing my eyes as we swayed under the moon. "That was always so much fun." Diluc spun me out, then back into his arms. "Father use to watch us practice, he never told me directly, but Elzer said it was one of his favorite memories." Diluc pressed his lips into a line, eyes turning back to the manor. "He always loved this event, but I can't help but hate it." "I'm not a fan of the crowds or the entitled guests. But I do enjoy dancing with you." I laid my head on his shoulder, bringing him back to the present. "It seems we only dance when this event rolls around. And I can't help but wish for more moments like this. So, while I understand your distaste, I do think Creepus had the right idea. This is a chance for all of us to come together do something we all loved…it just is hard to enjoy when other people are so entitled." "I feel the same way. Dancing with you, it's always my favorite part of the ball." We swayed back and forth in a tight embrace, the music fading out and our footwork growing sloppy. "There's been so much to do recently. I'm afraid I've neglected you." "Mother told me that as friends get older, drifting apart is normal… I'm just glad you're still here with me. No matter how short that time is." He hugged me tighter, inhaling a sharp breath. "Maybe friends do, but my feelings for you are much stronger than just friends." I gasped before I could stop myself. Crickets chirped in the distance, and the lighting bugs emerged just as the party started to close. This moment was very much real…but did he really just confess? "You want to be with me?" I slowly looked up, grabbing the sides of his suit. "As more than friends?" "I do." He pulled back a little, glancing at the ground. "How do you feel? Could you ever love me as more than a friend? I know it's selfish to ask that of you, given the dangers that follow my line of duty. But I can't deny myself any longer." "My heart is going to jump out of my chest, Luc." Grasping his hand, I pressed it to my wrist. He smiled, rubbing his thumb over my pulse. "I want to be yours, and you mine. To be honest, I've had feelings for you for a while now. I just thought you didn't return them." Heat climbed up my face, and I looked away to hide it. While his confession was so smooth, mine was energetic and messy. Why couldn't I keep it calm? "That settles it then." He stepped closer, our eyes locking and fingers lacing. "We'll be together from here on out." A warm breeze went by, picking up the bottom of my ruined skirt. "Next time there's a dance, you won't have to leave my side, nor I yours. There will be no flying wine glasses or uncouth guests. We can dance the night away without worry or interruption." "I don't know if a party could ever go that smoothly." I pushed his hair back and cupped his face. "Unless we barred over half the guest list." "If you don't think I'd do that, then you underestimate how far I'll go to make you happy." His checks tined red, barely illuminated by the moon. "Oh, I don't doubt you, Master Diluc. But I'm not hard to please, we could dance in the living room like we use to, and I'd be the happiest person alive." I tugged him closer, wrapping my arms around his hips, and swaying to an imaginary beat. "It's not often you add my title before my name." He hummed, letting me lead us to the song in my head. "Master Diluc, whatever do you mean?" I batted my eyelashes and snickered. "I didn't realize I added it. Maybe it's where I've spent most of the night talking about you, and not to you that I've forgotten how to be relaxed. There was many a guest who wanted to pry about your love life." "Well, you have a definitive answer now, Lady Amber." He kissed the top of my head, stopping for a moment. His body radiated a wave of heat, and he nodded to himself. "It's starting to get cold. We should head inside before you catch a cold. I'm sure everyone's left by now." "I don't want this moment to end." I clung to his shirt, the warmth he emitted making my eyelids grow heavy. Whenever he allowed me to use him as a personal heater, I took the chance. But this was the first time I didn't worry about it being the last.   "We have many more moments like this ahead of us." He supported me as we walked towards the mansion, looping his arm around my waist. "Let's go clean up, and turn in for the night. Tomorrow we can have breakfast and go for a ride along the river. How does that sound?" "It sounds so nice." Once we were back in the house, Elzer met us in the doorway. "Where have you been, Master Diluc?" He rubbed the bridge of his nose and glanced at me. "And you, Ms. Amber, what were you thinking tossing your drink? You completely ruined the night. I could hardly contain the guests" Diluc wrapped his arm around my shoulder, and Elzer's tone sifted from miffed to muted. "Elzer, the issue was with the guests, not Amber." He steered me towards the stairs, nudging me along. "Go on to bed. I'll be up there in a moment. I have some business to finish up." Diluc walked towards his office, motioning for Elzer to follow him. Elzer shot me a perplexed look and tried to mouth out, 'be more careful' before hurrying after Diluc. I whisper back, "okay," before taking the stairs two at a time before stopping. I wasn't going to get in trouble, so I might as well show I'm not ashamed. "Goodnight Elzer," I called after the older man, with as "pleasant" of a tone as I could muster. Parties almost always stressed him more than Diluc, but since Elzer was an employee, he couldn't run and hide like Luc. Truth be known, if Diluc hadn't been there, I would have gotten a long lecture on the importance of keeping good relations with potential business partners. But that's only because Elzer couldn't let his frustrations out on anyone else. I was always there to listen and receive his distain when things went wrong. It wasn't my favorite pastime, but it did help him feel better. It was surprising he was so stressed, he actually chastised me in front of Diluc. It must have been a tough night even after I left. I usually was lectured in private, but he really was ready to let me have it.   Once in the guest room, I disrobed. The heavy gown took several minutes to untie and loosen the laces, but once it was done, my lungs could fully expand. My ribs ached, so I rubbed circles on my sides till the initial throb dulled. The night had gone better than I ever planned, and now it was over. Yet, there was a worse throb in my chest than the pain of a corset. Diluc and I were finally together. We removed the ever-lingering question and just confessed. Why did it hurt inside? Was it that the party was hard on everyone else and I was so happy? Or was it something else? Tilling the blue pitcher on the nightstand, water rushed into the ornate basin below. Dipping a rag into the cool water, I began to wash the wine from my face. It had been such a stressful night. Perhaps the empty feeling inside was fear of the unknown. Or fear that Diluc would wake up and change his mind. That he'd send me away for good once he realized he could never be with someone of such low status. Someone who didn't couldn't even keep up public appearance at a ball. Maybe, it would just take me slipping up once when I was wearing a mask? Then he'd send me away from the manor. I finished cleaning up, then tossed the water out the window. Fixing the pitcher and basin back in place, I reached below the nightstand and pulled out my nightgown. Slipping on the flowy gown, I turned down my sheets and got comfortable. This guest room had been mine for as long as I could remember. While I still lived in the cottage by the river with my mother, I spent more nights at the mansion than at home. Diluc and I would rush through his paperwork every night, and I'd help get his gear ready to go protect Mondstat. I was his sidekick in many ways. Spending so much time there at night, it just made sense for me to sleep here too. We were a great team. Plus, the close proximity made things easier and less suspicious… But that wasn't the whole truth. It was more so that my mother had met someone new, and he had moved into our shared home. He was a nice man, a retired Knight of Favonius, but I just couldn't relax around him. He was stern about me not going out after dark, so staying over at the mansion became more and more frequent. Which was better for mom and Mr.Godfrey's partnership. But while I spent more nights away, mom started to believe there was something between Diluc and me, so she was happy to see me leave home. She was going to be overjoyed to hear the news that we confessed. Though, I'm sure she'll say kicking me out was the reason we finally admitted our feelings, which was not the whole truth. Still, I did miss my own bed sometimes. Pressing my back to the headboard, I curled my knees up and rested my head between them. Sucking in a deep breath, small tears slipped past again. There was too much happening. I couldn't think about one thing for too long. So much good just happened. Why? Why was I thinking about the bad? A familiar rasp at the door rang through the room. "Come in." Wiping my eyes, I sat up and pulled the covers up to my neck. "You're crying again." He walked into the candlelight. I could tell he had cleaned up before coming to see me. He was wearing one of his loose puffy shirts and some cotton pants; his hair had been smoothed and pulled into a low ponytail, water dripping from the ends. It didn't matter what he wore. He always looked unbelievably handsome. "Was it Elzer? He knows it's not your fault. He was just worried about our trade deal." "There's just so much to think about. I can't let myself be happy." I rubbed my eyes again. "What if you realize I'm not good enough for you? Or what if my mother's partner treats you poorly because you quit the Knights? Then that couple, what if they stop working with you and it hurts the business because of me? No one is ever going to see me as anything more than a gold digger." My brain let loose, new concerns and problems being added to my mix. "I'm so negative right now, and I know you probably just want to be happy that we feel the same way…but- I'm so sorry. "He pulled back the covers and crawled in with me. Wrapping me in his arms, the blanket went over our heads, and Diluc settled down. "There you go, having to comfort me like a child." I rested my hand on his shoulder. "You sure you could learn to love a mess like me?" "I already love you." He rubbed patterns on my back, pressing a kiss to the lump on my forehead. "You've been like this since we were children, plagued with worries beyond your control. I know that after you let it out, you always feel better. And that the minute you go silent, that's when I really need to do some digging." He paused drawing on my back and instead moved to play with my hair. "We'll figure it all out as we go, all the what's and if's. We'll take them one at a time, starting with the one I have control over." "Woah." He flipped me over, hovering inches from my face. He pinned me between his legs, the v neck of his shirt hanging open so I could see the red hairs on his chest. "You could be from the richest family in Mondstat or poorest, and I'd still want to be with you." He kissed me, pressing down just until our bodies touched. "I'd go as far as to say, if you were a member of the Fatui, I'd still be smitten. I would certainly find a way to break your ties with them, but I couldn't stop loving you. So, you are more than enough for me, and if anyone makes you feel differently, then I will handle it." "That's a bold statement coming from you." I ran my fingers through his ponytail as it hung over his shoulder. "I can't argue with that logic, but I promise I'm not a member of the Fatui." I wrapped my arms around his waist, encouraging him to squish me with his full weight. "I'm going to crush you." He fought against me, but I only nuzzled his neck, blowing raspberries. "Amber, hey." "I know. But I'd also like to point out how improper it is for you to be in my room at this hour. So, I'd like to be crushed as repayment… please." I let go of one side of his hip and wiped my eyes. "You are right. It is improper." He lowered himself a little more but didn't fully lay on me. "A true gentlemen would never stay this late with a proper young lady. However, there is something else I want that's a little scandalous." "What could that be?" I gasped, my lungs not fully expanding as his weight sunk down on my chest. He noticed as he sat up to his previous position. "A kiss?" He moved his elbow up and cupped my face. His eyes glimmered with the flame that was lighting up the room. His touch was gentle but so firm I couldn't imagine being in another person's embrace. At that moment, there were only two people in the world, and I was madly in love with one of them.   "That sounds quite proper to me. You should always kiss your lover goodnight." I stuttered a little, unable to keep up the playful banter as I looked at his lips. The smile that spread on his face made the butterflies in my stomach flutter. Archons, I was smitten.   His thumb brushed my lower lip before he brought his mouth down for a chaste kiss. Testing the waters, he hovered millimeters above me, and I stole his lips in a deeper kiss. Having a lack of experience in the field, I matched the pattern he set. Just like dancing, I tried to take the lead and failed miserably. So I did was I was best at, adding the fun flourishes. I curled my fingers into his hair and snaked my hand up his shirt and across his chest. He matched my movements, caressing my face and tilting my head up to deepen the kiss. Every star in the sky dulled in comparison to the explosion of light that spread over my body. He shifted back, catching his breath. he smoothed my hair and peppered, kissing around my face before setting back. "Thank you." He laced our fingers together, pulling my hand to his mouth and kissing my knuckles.     "Will you stay tonight?" I took our intertwined hands and kissed his knuckles in return. "I don't want you to leave just yet." "As you wish." He got behind me, adjusting the covers we had tossed around earlier. "Now, let's get some sleep. We have a big day tomorrow." I laid my head on my pillow and scooted back until we were slotted against each other. His hand wrapped around my shoulders in a reassuring squeeze. "I love you." "I love you more." It took a while for all the blood pumping through my body to relax again, but once it did, I fell into a deep and peaceful sleep. Dreams of dancing through the clouds with Diluc filled my head, and I had the best rest of my entire life. Next to the man I dearly loved.

..WAS IT A HARD DAY FOR HIM? HE himself didn't know. Whatever it is, it ended up being one of those nights. his breathing unstable, head down low, fingers entangling a glass of the famous Death After Noon. His memories, however, are what he's trying to forget for the night (as always, but really, he wouldn't admit it.) but, much to his displeasure, while he was trying to drown his life away with his drinks, his memories decide to drown him in. Kaeya liked to call himself confident and exceptional, but with you, his confidence seemed to lessen. How dare you, he thinks, familiar yet in denial with these feelings, how dare you make me able to feel such things, he thinks again, he blames you, it's a daily thing for him now, whenever his emotions go haywire, when he looks at you and feels— nervous, at first, why would he feel nervous? He knew the answer already. Although Kaeya Alberich, ever the cunning liar, thinks—oh, no, he knows, that it's but a crush. Now, though? Oh, how you've swept said Cavalry Captain, he's absolutely smitten for you, and he wonders if you are too. He doesn't know, nor he doesn't care how many ounces he has drunk, but it seems enough for him to get sent out by his beloved brother. A scowl printed on the redhead's face, snatching his brother's cup when he was about to order— again. Seriously, when he's in love, (was that the right word to describe it, now?) he managed to get more annoying, that doesn't make him less irresistible. (at least, that's what he thinks.) Diluc only sighs, however, concern replacing his aloof demeanor. they weren't on the best of terms, per se— scratch that, they weren't on good terms. Have you ever seen Diluc without his scowl whenever his eyes land on Kaeya? "Go home, Kaeya." Diluc warns, but Kaeya only smiles, "Is dear brother worried for me?" He says, slurred— but his stepbrother was able to notice the slight tease on his tone. He clicked his tongue, turning away, to revel in the light the moon provided. It's almost like the sky, the gods, were mocking the cavalry captain. His periwinkle eye shines under the twilight, making his face a sight to those who noticed. He grunts, standing up from his seat, legs a bit wobbly due to the amount of drinking he had done. a few crack of his joints, he managed to stand up straight— for a few seconds, that is. He turns around, back to where his stepbrother was last seen, "See you soon, brother, goo— ah," he spoke, a pained click of his tongue was heard; he gained a headache. "Good night." He managed to voice out, stepping out of the tavern, footsteps uneven and vision blurred. He could only imagine a faint "take care of yourself, Kaeya." from Diluc.
A knock on your door, who could it be? At this hour, as well? [Name], ever the overthinker. Capable of replacing Kaeya's position on the Knights Of Favonius, do you think? You really did not have the energy to tend to anyone today. Although you really didn't do anything today, let's gloss over that. The moon— reminds you of that periwinkle eye that never seems to leave your figure. You weren't an idiot, you knew, but what you didn't know, was did he know that you know? He didn't, actually. He tried being subtle; he thought he was being subtle. He was described as observant, yet he still doesn't know that he's not being subtle; was it on purpose? You didn't know, and yet, you can't find yourself to care. You just needed confirmation. To be fair, when you dream about him and when he manages to have the key to your heart, does that mean you love him? Another knock, this time, louder. Letting out a 'tch' in frustration, you get up, walking to the door as slowly as possible. Was it cruel, to make the unexpected and definitely unwanted visitor wait for a while? To you, obviously not. You were about to sleep, for fucks' sake. Turning the doorknob, You were met with quite an unexpected sight. Kaeya, the man you were thinking about just a few moments ago, slumped on the wall near your door, clothes disheveled, lips stained with what you could make out as wine, hair tousled, some strands falling on his face, a slight blush on his cheeks— something you have never seen before, and his hands were placed on his forehead. He was heavily breathing and seemed to have put your attention on you when you oh so softly called out his name. "Hello, darling," the pet name rolled off his tongue before he could prevent it. Was this man trying to kill you? If he is, he's doing a damn good job. (just like he always is.) with his noticeable, yet unique eyes boring into your own, his features being illuminated, courtesy of the moonlight. Quickly snapping out of your thoughts, you turned to the man looking at you. "Why.." you made a circling motion with your pointer finger, to which Kaeya chuckled at. His voice, raspy, entered your ears and led you to the conclusion that he was, once again, drunk. "I think you have an idea, princess." He said, the pet name once again leaving his mouth. You could feel your face heating up, however, that was the least of your concerns. "Anyways.." He trailed off, cocking his head to the door, "Are you gonna let me in?" He really didn't want to entertain any questions relating to why he came to your house instead of his, (once again, he decides to blame it on his feelings-- on you) but he decides to play along; that's what he does best, no?
You reluctantly let him in, hearing a relieved ‘thank you’ from the blue-haired man. Contemplating whether to make him sleep on the couch or in the guest bedroom— did you even have one? You forgot the interior of your house due to how tired you are. Not that you were complaining, thinking makes your head hurt on nights like these. in the middle of your internal monologue, Kaeya made himself comfortable on your couch; a squeak was heard when he was shifting. You quickly shifted your gaze to the man who is now in front of you. Silence fills the canvas that is the sky and your living room. "Remove your accessories," You mumble, hoping that he would hear it. He flicked his head to you, smirking, "At least take me out for drinks," He teased, and you couldn't help but deadpan at him. Oh, you’re taking him out alright. With a sword. Although intoxicated, his teasing was still unrelenting. He obeyed you, either way, taking off his cape, (was it a cape? it looks like so.) and his pelt of fur, placing them carefully on the small coffee table in front of him. Then, his boots came off as well. "Enjoying the view, hm?" He cooed, locking his eyes with yours, and you let out an amused hum, unfazed by his antics. "Right," you really don't want to deal with this today. It's late at night, and this Cavalry Captain decided to barge into your doorstep. You didn't want to ask why, though, he'll tease you relentlessly while avoiding the topic. You grabbed some spare pillows and blankets from your other room. Internally clicking your tongue and cursing him out in your mind, you halted your footsteps when you saw him sleeping. His mouth was slightly agape and his legs were (long, was your first thought) bent so he could fit on your couch. Snickering to yourself, you gently lifted his head up to put the pillow below him, and a blanket on top of him. Thinking about it, you doubted the reason why he came here was to bring false hope. To make you believe that you actually had the chance to be with the Kaeya Alberich, the proclaimed bachelor of Mondstadt. You knew how many people would kill to be in your place right now, but that, you could care less about. Kaeya was unpredictable; you knew. You kept learning new things about him every day, but to others, it may seem that he could read you like the back of your hand. He wasn't wrong, nor was he right, but the things you do are sometimes predictable, some even more so than others. You surprise him, you really do; you could learn things and adapt to certain situations in a snap, and that was probably what allured him. You were attractive, it was obvious, it doesn't take a genius to see that, but what attracted him was the personality you never showed to people. It was a privilege to Kaeya, to him, at least. You sighed, walking towards your grand piano in the center of the living room, light reflecting from its material. You made sure your footsteps were soft so as not to disturb the man on your couch, and you sat down. A melody won't hurt, would it?
your fingers worked their way to the keyboard, and then, you play. Your fingers were like weavers— skilfully weaving a masterpiece and satisfying its client, and you— clearly you weren't going to fail such powerful pianists, now would you? You were painting a canvas using your fingers, pressing on its keys ever so gently; the music traveling with the wind. You had a natural talent for piano, it was obvious, you never had a hard time implementing piano pieces onto your head. Your fingers were single-handedly forming a story on their own on the piano, pressing onto its tiles and carefully playing each note. Kaeya, on the other hand, was never asleep. This was one of the moments where you never fail to surprise him. Piano? Since when were you able to play such an instrument? You never mentioned such a thing to him, nor to anyone he could recall. Could he say that this melody you were playing, just for him, made him fall even harder? It was a pit that he could never escape, he realized that. Maybe the reason why he was here was that he was looking for you. He knew that he loved you, he's not denying it anymore. Who knew that such a simple piece could impact someone's thoughts—
Kaeya's thoughts? Simple, because it was you who was playing it, you, the person who he has fallen in love with, who never fails to make his heart race even when you just spare a glance at him, and you, who has amazed him in more ways than one. He slept soundly to the tune of your melody, dreaming about you, and he wondered, are you dreaming about him too?

The life of You
[AO3]
Tumblr media
Words: 2490
Next day when you arrived at the office Yue was already there, brewing tea. Looking around, everything seemed just like you had left it last night when you finally finished all documents. She probably just arrived. You greeted each other.
Before you could sit down she already informed you about getting through the documents you had with you in Monds. Rising an eyebrow at her in question.
"I'm not your assistant for nothing, right?"
"It's not even seven and you are telling me that you chewed through all of that? C'mon I was writing it for hours after feeling better! You can't just check all of it in a matter of a few minutes before I appear here!"
She giggled but gave you a concerned look.
"You didn't feel well? Got sick? You? I can't believe it!"
"I know right? Miracles happen. So next time please don't rush through something I was sinking hours in. Makes me feel like I do unsatisfying work!"
The way she looked at you could be read in two ways. Either 'I'll try but no promises' or 'Nothing can stop me'. Whichever it is out of the two you didn't like it. However you decided to change topic as you really didn't feel up to talk about work this early in the morning.
Telling her what caused your sickness. How you and Kaeya discovered so many ruin guards residing in the for so long locked up area. Skipping the part where you two cuddled under one blanket. You knew she would be teasing you.
Well she already did the moment she asked how did you manage to cook. Knowing about your culinary skills. And the way you described it, you were not able to get out of your house at all. Noticing your blush. You really didn't want to say it but she made you.
"Ah, I see. So tell me, how was it to have a guy cooking for you? You also said he is quite good looking right?! C'mon tell me all the details!"
She surely is like a teenager when it comes to things like this.
"There's not much to it, really. Just a dude who got worried over his idiotic friend and decided to mercy on me. Although, the stew he made was amazing..."
You had to admit Diluc's cooking was different from what you had eaten until now. Wasn't really fancy, really simple but damn good tasting. Maybe you will ask him to cook you something for your birthday, that's it if he will have time of course.
"Mmmh. I want to be young again, to feel loved for the first time. Ah I'm so jealous of you!"
Coughing, trying to suppress the blush crawling on your face.
"Once again. We are childhood friends, wouldn't you extra worry for your close friend?"
She chuckled and admitted that she married her childhood friend. Well that didn't help you much with justifying anything. Giving up. Being glad you skipped the thing with Kaeya. She already teased you back then for that sleep over. Luckily it seems she had forgotten about it.
Or maybe not.
"Oh right! You were alone with that other friend of yours, right? Any progression at all?" Giving you a wink.
If she wasn't older than you, you'd smack her head by now. Feeling annoyed by her teasing and just huffing. Rather busying yourself with searching for something in drawers.
Mrs. Yue could be described as a grown up woman with a very warm and caring personality. Yet sometimes her curiosity and childish self took over, it wasn't that bad until she started pointing out how you should start thinking of laying your eyes on somebody. And just knowing about your friends was giving her reason enough to tease you about it.
However she has good judgement and when she notices her boss is irritated she stops. Bringing up her business woman behavior and getting serious about the work. Well after pouring two cups of tea of course. She can't start her work day without tea. You have never been a tea person but neither coffee. Not caring what it will be and simply taking whatever the other person offered you.
The day at Qingshan was slowly passing by. Around noon you had a meeting which was tied to those documents from last night. You were glad to actually read through them. Having a clueless CEO is probably the worst possible scenario. Once again you could have not attend it as it was not so really important one between the company and supplier. But you felt like the more physical contact you do with people around, the better.
"Hmm the rite will be held soon right?"
"Oh, yes! I nearly forgot about it. Gosh."
Yue was quickly folding the invoices into correct boxes. Boxes which were emptied every friday and put into right folders. It was something easy to do and usually you did it before leaving home.
"Well I call it a day then. I promised to go there with you. Also we have to grab some snacks on our way, I'm dying!"
You decided and got up. Ready to quickly clean and prepare the office for tomorrow. Little did you know your favorite restaurant will be closed today. You wanted to grab some chicken and they made it the best. You had to satisfy your hunger with noodles. Quickly munching them on your way up to the Yujing Terrace.
When you arrived, there was already a crowd. Taking a hold on Yue just in case of separation. Wondering if you will see with Aether and Paimon. However there were way too many people and they are quite short. Abandoning all your hopes.
"How about we make our wishes before it starts?"
Tilting your head to the side, giving it a thought. You never believed in those so called wishes to the Adepti or Archon himself. Part of you feeling like you are not even deserving to wish for something. You are not a citizen of Liyue. You might have been born here but you are from Mondstadt, by heart and soul.
"You can make wishes for both of us, I pass."
You received a disappointed sigh from her. However you accompanied her as you knew the moment you separate you will be lost until the rite is finished and the crowd gets smaller.
When she was done, smiling at you. You were about to turn away and walk back but she held your wrist.
"No, no~. This is the second time I got you here. You won't escape the tradition."
Rolling your eyes, clapping hands together. Giving her one quick glare before closing eyes. What should you wish for anyway? Wealth and good business? Happiness? You were quite happy with your life, could be better but nothing too drastic. Perhaps you could wish your assistant would stop teasing you about men every time. There were many possibilities you could make a wish for.
'I wish... I wish for a never ending package of cookies! But seriously if anyone can hear my prayer, I have only one wish. May my friends make up somehow... someday. I want them to be happy. Not keeping everything to themselves. I hope one day things will get better and we could celebrate!'
Opening your eyes again, noticing Yue's smugging at you and you raise an eyebrow at her.
"What?"
"You were smiling. Perhaps you wished about somebody, mmh?"
And once again she was teasing you. Maybe you should have prayed for her letting you be.
Your attention shifted towards the middle. The rite has started, making your way through the crowd so you can see. You knew the Lady Ningguang was the one who would be summoning the geo Archon. What you did not expect was seeing something falling down from the sky at high speed.
Usually the Archon would be descending at a slower pace. Narrowing your eyes. It felt odd. It didn't feel any better as in the next few seconds the Archon crashed. 'That's strange.'
He didn't move, in fact the body looked lifeless. As Lady Ningguang approached it, she quickly turned around and said something that made you panic inside. Dead?! Like for real? Isn't Archon something or somebody that doesn't die so easily? What happened?
People started panicking but nobody could leave the Terrace. All exits were blocked and so you got stuck here while having this weird feeling in your stomach. Looking at Yue who was shocked, holding a hand over her mouth. She looked like she would start crying soon. Pulling her away from the sight at the lifeless body.
You spend way too long at the Terrace. You were irritated and the Millelith’s useless questions didn't make you feel any better. Just how much dumb they have to be to realize nobody present is strong enough to take down an Archon. Not even vision wielders. Obviously most of the questions were aimed at your vision.
Feeling like to punch the man's face at any minute but once one his people whispered him something he left you. You could have heard 'blonde'. Which didn't make sense at that moment but when you and Yue were walking through streets and noticing Aether with Paimon, talking to somebody. You put one and one together.
"May I ask you to go ahead and order some tea? I have to... check on somebody."
She gave you a confused look but nodded nonetheless. You made your way to the trio. As you came closer they had noticed you. Paimon waved while Aether had that nervous expression on his face. With one glance at the third you could tell who they are.
You sure had heard some rumors about the ginger male. He has been in the city for a while to make some reputation. You did not even realize it but your hand instinctively reached behind your back, nearly summoning your sword. You just couldn't stand Fatui.
Realizing what you were doing and trying to play it off like you were scratching your neck. However the tall male has noticed it, he knew who you were. He didn't feel like to fight or argue tonight, he got his share earlier while saving the blonde. Deciding to leave it slide for now, although he never let his eyes off you.
"So as I said. I'm kind of worried they might find you out. I'm sure you did nothing wrong but trying to reason with guards now... might be quite bothersome."
Which wasn't that far from the truth. The Rex Lapis's death quickly spread across the whole city. It will surely shake with all business. And everyone will be looking for somebody to blame.
"Hmm." You looked at Aether up and down. "Hey, how about you drop at Qingshan. We could give you new clothes, something less exotic. So you could fit in. Besides the ones you have right now, they look like they deserve to change. Oh also it will be for free, anything for friends."
This piqued the ginger's curiosity. So you knew with the blonde, well enough to offer him free clothes, huh?
"Does the offer work for me too?" He knew your answer already but he still wanted to mess around.
You still faced Aether, so far you ignored that guy’s presence. Whatever was the reason these three talked together, you didn’t care. But now, he had the audacity to talk to you and- how the heck did he fall to a conclusion the offer is for him too?!
"I'm sorry mister but the offer is only for my friend over there. Close friend to that." Turning around and looking up at his face. The smile he had irritated you. "You will have to pay full price... with all the taxes included."
You said the last words very slowly, trying not to spit at him. The eye contact you two kept was more than challenging. Reminding yourself where you are. You just can't beat this guy, especially when he did nothing more than speaking up. How would you justify that anyway?
"Aww, not even a friend of your friend's sale?"
"I'm sorry, mister. Besides, your clothes look more than well and in good shape."
The air between you two got heavier every passing second. Aether was looking from you to the guy back and forth. Should he say something?
"Ah, well. Perhaps I'll check your business later Lady y/n."
"Drop the act Fatui." You snapped. Growing irritated by his pointless play. "I don't know what you are plotting but..." You looked down at your palm where you had summoned a small snowflake. It levitated above your hand.
"If I find out something has happened to my friend over there." Crushing the snowflake in your palm, looking up back at the ginger. "I might get angry. You wouldn't want to anger a lady, would you?"
The glint which quickly flashed across his eyes. You couldn't not notice it. However you were surprised by his laugh. This was more than an obvious threat yet he was laughing. Were you funny?!
"Oh dear. Why does everyone think I'm a bad guy? I just saved your little friend. Yes, I am with the Fatui. But I have no intention to fight, cause trouble or hurt him. I mean... if I wanted to. I'd do it already, wouldn't I?"
You didn't bother to answer, turning away whispering Aether to not let his guard down. You wanted to leave but stopped for a while as the Fatui said something that made you quickly turn back and glare at him.
“Although, I might be a bad guy just for you, Sweetie. You just look like that type of a girl who would enjoy bad treatment. And yet keep screaming my name while-” He chuckles, realizing he would need to tell the two to cover their ears before continuing.
It's hard to make you angered enough to be willing to jump at somebody. But this guy just did it. Aether has noticed your twitching eye and quickly saved everyone from an embarrassment.
"Y/n I'll drop by tomorrow! I might need help with choosing so please bear with me!"
You knew he said it only to distract you. Which to be fair you were glad for. Playing along and giving him a nod before leaving. Quickly disappearing, walking towards the tea house where Yue was probably worried what took you so long.
If one thing is for sure. The moment that dude dares to show up his face he will get higher prices just because how much he irritated you. Equal customer treatment? Pff, no way. Not for the Fatui. You were sure Diluc would do the same, then you had realized the said man would most likely lose his cool and throw the guy out of his tavern. Or better never let him enter.

"Sure, I'll get going."
Moving to the exit, he waves.
"See you later then."
"Likewise, dear Captain."
The moment he's a good distance away, the woman snaps her finger and the sound echoes throughout the empty library.
"Coast clear."
And from a corner close by, a girl of green hair with glasses peeks out.
The Assistant Alchemist, Sucrose.
"Th- Thank you, this... this should be sufficient."
Humming, Lisa nods with a smile.
"Yes, dear, it should be."
What a day it is today.
It doesn't take long for the man to spot their Outrider at the entrance of their Headquarters, alongside the Honorary Knight.
"Yo."
Grinning slightly, he raises his hand in greeting.
"What's up?"
"There you are!"
Amber waves in response, while the Traveler by her side wordlessly nods in acknowledgement.
"We spotted something in Windrise today!"
"Oh? Is that so?"
The tanned man hums, folding his arms.
"Do tell me about it."
After a while of explaining, he decides to join the duo in taking a look at the odd "thing" they saw by the Statue of The Seven's side.
A doll-like creature, small and has the ability to levitate.
It's nothing like what they've ever seen before.
To make it more complicated, said creature also seems to have a will of its own and constantly dodges their attempts on getting a hold of it.
Their little game of chase goes on until dusk, only then did they lose track of the poor thing and decide to return to the Headquarters.
Throughout the duration of it, however, the man has to admit that it's rather entertaining.
And nostalgic, since he used to play that kind of game with...
`"Catch me if you can!"
"Challenge accepted!"`
The sound of their laughter in those distant days still ring clearly in his ears, echoes of a pleasant childhood he knows he doesn't deserve.
"Sheesh, it was so fast."
Amber huffs on their way back.
"And small too, which makes grabbing it all the more difficult."
"You can't blame it, really."
Paimon, the Honorary Knight's floating companion, comments.
"When some strangers just suddenly show up and try to get a hold of you, of course you run."
"That's right."
Kaeya hums, holding his chin in thought.
"Besides, I'm sure I at least managed to tell what kind of thing it was."
At this, the brunette turns to him immediately.
"You did? That's fast!"
"Of course."
Smirking, he continues.
"It's an elemental being, a wisp amongst Mondstadt's thousand winds."
And once again, a remark catches him off-guard.
"You're amazing, Sir Kaeya!"
The Outrider did not just-
"I'm glad we have you within the Knights' ranks!"
Oh Barbatos, his face must have looked so ridiculous that it caused both Amber herself and the Traveler to stare when they finally took notice of it.
"Kaeya?"
Paimon waves a hand in front of his eyes.
"Helloooo?"
Maybe his smile literally froze on his face, though.
"He's acting weird..."
Amber mumbles.
"Well, at least we're here now."
Indeed, they're currently standing just before the entrance of the Knights of Favonius' Headquarters.
The sky, painted in fiery orange of the setting sun, reminds the man of someone's eyes.
Orbs that shine with burning passion, an unrelenting desire to protect this land with everything this person has.
A tug on his sleeve brings him back to reality, looking to the side to find their Honorary Knight smiling up at him.
The third thing is...
Why is everyone suddenly so hard to read?
From the ones he met early morning to those he met in the late afternoon, they're all so...
Unpredictable.
And Amber beams at him, taking his right hand as the Traveler had his left.
Then they lead him inside together.
His heart skips a beat once the large doors open, revealing the rest of Ordo Favonius along with colorful decorations.
As well as a gigantic "Happy Birthday" hanging from the ceiling.
"Happy birthday, big bro Kaeya!!"
Klee comes jumping down from a hovering flower - Albedo's, he notes - and throws various cute-looking things, which he's sure are explosives.
Although when they do blow up, it's all confetti and glitter.
So this is why Jean agreed...
The two by his sides quickly let go of his hands as the small girl falls right into his arms, giggling.
"Yay!! The new formula worked!"
"Splendidly."
Lisa chuckles, snapping her fingers and the lights go out.
"Time for the cake."
At this, he sees a cart being pushed out by Noelle and candles illuminate the area.
On it lays a cake of three layers, each of a different color.
Ocean blue, ice blue and white, from top to bottom.
"Please make a wish, Sir Kaeya."
Along with the maid's smile, he makes out everyone else's in the dimly lit lobby.
Ah... a birthday wish.
Smiling back at them, he nods.
But what should he wish for, really?
They went through the trouble to organize a party for him right under his nose and it is rather impressive how they've managed, if he were to be honest.
He knows the birth date is always on one's profile when they apply for a job, but he didn't expect them to pay that any mind.
Especially when it's his.
He hadn't celebrated it in years, after that event took place.
...
He would be lying if he said there was nothing he wanted to wish for, though.
`"Happy birthday!"`
The image of a young boy, smiling brightly as he handed Kaeya a gift.
That had been the first time someone threw a birthday party for him.
Chuckling, the tanned man moves to blow the candles as his wish comes to mind.
A childish dream he still believed in.
The girl in his arms cheer when everybody's applause resounds, light flickering back on with another snap of the librarian's fingers.
"On behalf of every knight within Ordo Favonius, I thank you for your contribution in maintaining the peace of our city."
Jean steps forward, a hand on her heart as she speaks.
"We hope that you enjoy your time here, as well as allowing this place to become your second home."
The warmth in his chest intensifies, a feeling he hadn't felt for so long.
And the woman smiles.
"Everyone, let us say it together."
From the shy Assistant Alchemist to the outgoing Outrider, from the strict Acting Grand Master to the friendly Honorary Knight, from the rarely seen Chief Alchemist to the ever-present Apprentice Knight, from the graceful Librarian to the explosive Spark Knight.
All of them, with bright smiles, go on and-
"Happy birthday, Kaeya!"
Even if his eyes feel a bit like burning right now, the man grins back at them.
"Thank you, all of you."
He doesn't think he deserves it.
Yet as he feels their sincere affection and gratitude, he can't push them away.
Perhaps... for this occasion, he'll allow himself to be honest once more.
When stars fill the night sky and the moon ascends to its peak, the Cavalry Captain leans onto the railing of the small balcony as the party goes on inside the building.
He wonders if... it could have been this way, if none of the horrible events a few years back happened.
Other than throwing a party for him, Sucrose gave him quite a pleasant surprise by being able to make untesils somewhat "alive". Perhaps that was why she needed them this morning, so they could easily move around for everyone to use.
The girl's bio-alchemy skills are getting better and better, as expected of someone working alongside Mondstadt's best alchemist.
Well, she had potential anyway.
That said-
"... Having some time to yourself?"
He pauses upon hearing the voice.
This can't be-
"That is to be expected, you've never been a big fan of parties despite your eccentric nature."
Whipping his head to the source of the voice, he finds a familiar redhead sitting on the railing to the side - a leg on it and one dangling - away from people's view, in a black cloak he hadn't seen for so long.
"You..."
His voice comes out barely audible, like a faint whisper of utter disbelief.
"Why..."
"I want nothing to do with the Knights of Favonius."
The other sighs, glancing at him.
"But since it is a special day, I'll make an exception."
At that, the tanned man goes silent.
An exception? For...
"Before you even get to that, stop."
Currently masked, the redhead only waves him over.
"Come here."
That mask is different, not the same one he used before.
Considering what it was for, it isn't hard to understand why the other abandoned it along with "that".
Confused but curious, he does as he was told and stops in his tracks upon seeing the offered hand.
"... Diluc?"
At the mention of his name, the other averts his gaze.
"Hurry, we don't have all night."
Smirking, Kaeya finally takes the hand and chuckles quietly.
"Where are you taking me, O Nocturnal Guardian of Mondstadt?"
"... You'll see soon enough."
In quick succession, the redhead pulls the man closer to himself and sweeps him off of his feet using his leg.
The smirk on the Cavalry Captain's face immediately gets replaced by a look of surprise due to the sudden bridal carry and in turn, the Darknight Hero's lips quirk up slightly.
"Mond's Knight of Ice."
