you want an indie boyfriend who skates and introduces you to music, clothes and overall just loves you? Gekko is right there in the corner staring at you in adoration

You were quite new in the protocol, you joined right after neon, so only 2 more people joined after you. You pretty much got along with everyone there, even being tolerated by viper and reyna. (you think reyna only didnt hate your guts because you were a radiant)

though you did like to hang out with neon, raze, jett and phoenix a lot. Those 4 you seemed to mesh really well with, very loud and outgoing people. Which is why it was such a shock when another agent joined.

“Everyone this is gekko, The new guy who will be joining you guys on missions, make sure to treat him well.”

Brim said sternly, while gekko just gave a bit of a goofy wave. It was love at first site.

“he’s so fine omg.”

you and neon whispered to each other. You couldn’t take your eyes off him, he was just so different to most the people here, he looked more relaxed and chill. Sage then took him off to show his room.

You got to the food place and decided to eat it there instead of takeaway. it was a small place, a family owned business. it was quaint

“so (y/n) what do you plan to get?”

“hmmm i’ll go with this one”

you point to your usual oder on the menu.

you and gekko order and just keep talking. its nice, he’s really nice, and chill, and good looking and you’re staring at him again.

“so you wanna tell me about the people we work with? por favour.”

“oh yeah okay so, everyone’s really nice. Maybe not viper and reyna but they’re nice deep down… i think.

“ohhh reyna is actually the one who trains me!”

you two keep discussing everyone until your food arrives.

“woah this looks good as, great pick (y/n)!”

eventually you get back, completely stuffed from the food.

“yeah same! what movie are we watching?”

“a horror! its going to be so fun, just come to the common room when you’re ready.”

neon says before sprinting away. You look over to gekko and see him slightly frozen.

“you scared of horror movies or something?”

gekko nods his head slightly.

“don’t worry you can grab onto my arm if you get scared!”

gekko blushed a little at this.

the two of you walk to the common area and the movie starts. Everyone is sat in twos, Killjoy and raze, omen and sage, jett and neon.

the movie starts out well not too many scares but then the first jump scare happens. Making neon and Gekko jump

“oh shit!”

he says as he grabs onto your arm.

“sorry, didn’t mean to grab onto you.”

jett shushes the both of you.

the movie continues. With gekko basically clinging onto you for dear life. so like a good person you rub his back for him to clam down. he shivers at your touch. The movie ends, and killjoy and raze are giggling to themselves about how bad it was. omen and sage thank everyone for watching the movie as they walk to go do their own thing. while jett is comforting neon.

“neon it wasn’t that bad!”

“yes it was jett! what if that weird thing is going to come for me!!”

“come on lets go get you some water…”

which leaves you and gekko alone.

“you feeling alright?”

you ask him concerned.

“yep… yep. i’m alright. Man how do you not get scared?!”

you just shrug your shoulders.

NOV 24-29: okay so! after Minsk got arrested, CD stayed with their dad for a while, since their dad found out how their face got burned and he did a skin grafting surgery on their wound. CD is scared of catmons after this. While CD is in surgery and recovering, their dad (Atley Deo) takes over the account briefly (his tag is #pater plantarum). He is the head of Deo horticulture, a plant based business. Auzi owes Atley a blood debt. Atley asks about service mon and everyone and their mother suggests a smeargle. It is revealed that CD's mother and Atleys wife died in childbirth. Joltiks boyfriend breaks up with them while CD is out. When they come back they are very woozy.

NOV 30-DEC 1: CD decides to adopt an eevee egg from @/allthatglitterzz, and they receive a smeargle service mon to monitor their heart "arrythmia" , lovingly named Stencil. nobody thinks its an actual arrythmia and also people are even more theorizing that he is a plant. Speaking of that arrythmia, CD has a heart attack while home alone, and Stencil calls Joltik instead of their dad to come help. Their heart had stopped entirely, but a zap from Tik sets it back going again. Joltik calls CD's dad, and then leaves before Atley comes home.

DEC 2-DEC 6 : The eevee egg hatches! She is a beautiful baby girl and her name is Porridge, Pidge for short. CD is diagnosed with the TIsm for plant identification reasons /joke. CD and Joltik watch a lot of competition reality tv shows.

DEC 7-DEC 8: Nothing really important happens

DEC 9- DEC 15 : Joltik asks CD to catch them in a pokeball. CD keeps buying candles and they keep going missing, much to their annoyance. CD catches Joltik and it goes poorly, Joltik gets a bit messed up because of it. His candles continue to go missing, people begin to theorize about litwik. A new problem arises: a resident with a mightyena that is hopped up on X attack is roaming campus. DEC 16- : A candle appears on CD's windowsill, looking a lot like a litwick, although it has no flame. its merged into the windowsill and cannot be moved. It continues to amass more wax. CD names it Kerosene, after being hounded a bit by anons. DEC 17 -18 : Pidge briefly goes being, being found in Joltik's dorm. She knocks over a drawing filled with thunder stones and evolves into a Jolteon. Mightyena guy comes back, CD is on duty and patrols to chase him off. CD runs into him on patrol, and Pidge gets her ear torn off by the mightyena. CD goes offline, and Kerosene takes over the phone. It is implied that Kero evolved into a lanpent and consumes the mightyena to save CD. Kero uses a spirit box to communicate, saying that CD was at a pokecenter, and asking for help as she is lost. Joltik comes to find her. DEC 18 -23 Nothing overly important happens. CD accidentally helps Joltiks eevee Mint evolve into Umbreon.

DEC 23- 26: CD's dad finds out about the mightyena attack, and wants to assign CD a bodyguard which they think is stupid. their dad makes them stay home for a while. Tik comes to visit and watch shows while Atley is out. Atley comes back early, but isnt mad, just starts interrogating Tik a bit.

DEC 27-30 : Christmas present from dad!! It's a sprigatito named trowel!! Technically Juniper's first canon interaction with CD! @/sinnohstruggles

DEC 31: Lucretia Minsk escapes prison

JAN 1: the nuytsia project arc starts. should be tagged #the nuytsia project but is occasionally mispelled as #the nuystia project. Summary: joltik is infected by a parasite that makes them compulsed to protect and take care of CD, CD is revealed to be kept alive by a living plant inside them after being stillborn. Atley gains remote access of CD's phone for a brief takeover to try and explain why he did what he did. Atley then proceeds to let himself be taken to jail without struggle. CD is very very sad and distressed by the events of the arc. ARC OFFICIALLY ENDED JAN 8

JAN 9-12 : not a whole lot of importance here, cd gets sleepy and slow in the cold because plant. Juniper and CD start dating and they are cute lmao JAN 13-20 :CD's granparents get in contact, finally hearing that Atley is in jail. They attempt to get custody of CD, all of the pokemon, and all of Atley's assets. Atley did not get along well with his parents and a Lawyer will be in contact with CD, as they are being taken to court. CD quits their job as an RA and drops out of college due to stress from the oncoming court case. They begin lashing out a bit, because of the stress. CD has an argument with Juniper where Juniper attempts to help them but CD feels like they are being treated like a child. They throw the phone at the wall in frustration and Kero takes over the account. During the court case, CD has a heart attack due to the stress, and their grandparents use that to win the case, gaining custody over CD and all of Atley's assets.

JAN 21-22 : CD is taken to live with their grandparents. Their pokemon are taken from them, leaving them only with Stencil, Trowel, and Pidge (as well as Kerosene who is there secretly). CD is locked in their room at the grandparents house during this period, not allowed to leave. The house is cold and they feel slow and sick, not allowed plants or anything from home. They are fed food that makes them sick. CD begins sending audio messages to their friends, but they are short because they get in trouble when caught. It is revealed that the house is in Icirrus City. Kerosene evolved into a Chandelure in order to melt the window and get CD out of the house. JAN 23-FEB 1 : CD's phone is still broken, so they post audio recordings for a while. While in the Snowy forest, CD finds a eevee named Kiwi in a basket, who becomes very clingy and comes along with. It is revealed that CD has now been declared a missing person by their Grandparents. ALSO JUNIPER AND CD ACTUALLY STARTED DATING THE 28TH I FUCKED UP. Anons start hounding CD to go to moss rock because they think it will activate CD's latent plant powers. CD notably doesnt want Kiwi to evolve and gives kiwi 5 everstones. Kiwi dips once they get to pinwheel and loses all their everstones somehow, evolving into a leafeon, much to cds dismay. CD goes home very grumpy about this.

FEB 2- :Silvervine arc starts. should be tagged #silvervine arc. Summary: kiwi roots into cd, merging into them and making them a leafeon hybrid. minsk kidnaps CD, brainwashing/mindcontrolling them with her control over cat-mon. The hybridization merge makes CD have a rush of endorphins and dopamine to minimize the pain, giving them a floaty fuzzy feeling. cd helps minsk with some gardening ;3 lore is dropped, and CD escapes, fully hybridized, but still somewhat conditioned to listen to certain command phrases told to them by minsk, and feeling floaty fuzzy when they fall into leafeon instincts. THIS ARC ENDED FEB 5TH FEB 5th- Onward: Juniper went to a psych ward after stress from CD not wanting to see him post hybridization, he is still there. CD is briefly blocked by both tik and juniper. CD goes to live in lostlorn for a while. CD kinda breaks up with Juniper??? unclear. CD can now spead to cat mon and understand grass types. they meet a tropius named Yache who joins their team. CD lives with Juniper's pokemon team for a while before an argument happens and they leave again. now theyre kinda homeless! also! they turned into a leafeon for a few days and now they can kinda do that sometimes maybe work in progress I hope this was helpful!!!

Hiii! Sorry if I sound weird or disrespectful in some way, I was curious if it’s a common experience for you as a mileven shipper to go on byler tag just to try to understand their point of view. Like you go “ahh byler shippers make no sense, I wonder what are their thoughts on that scene/dialogue/etc” and then read some theories to understand them better. For example I am a byler and anti-mileven which means I completely don’t get this ship so I sometimes scroll through mileven tag or blogs to see “what are you guys on” (w/o negative tone)😭basically learning more abt mileven. Cause sometimes I see anti-byler posts where author obvi doesn’t even know what there’re talking abt and same thing with some anti-mileven ones. In my country there’s a popular phrase “know your enemy in the face”, it basically means you can’t hate anything not knowing what it is and I actually think that’s really important, some ppl should take notes lol, sorry for yapping. idk if you wanted a /srs answer but i just like truly think it does not matter. maybe it’s because im a multishipper myself (well not as much w the dsmp itself but still) but even if someone writes something that you don’t personally like that doesn’t negate the enjoyment you get out of their other works. i think sometimes in big fandoms people forget that fic writers and fanartists generally are literally just people who create art for free for fun, especially writers because selling their work falls into murky legal territory. the fics people write are largely for themselves, whether it’s a story they’re super passionate about or something they wouldn’t typically write that they’re doing to challenge themself or something else. i’ve definitely written stuff that is outside of what my general readership might pursue (i mean i wrote an au w c!pnf ifl that’s pretty niche lol) and when i posted it i didn’t really except my usual ppl to read it. i guess my point is that if it doesn’t appeal to you just don’t read it. maybe take the opportunity to find new authors to read from: the dnf community (and the c!dnf community as a subset) is pretty huge and a lot of good writers fly under the radar. the tags can be a lawless place but you might find something you like! or look at one of the many dnf rec accounts on here and twitter. @dtqkficrecs is new and might not have what you’re looking for quite yet, but i def wanna promo them specifically because they’re new and i think it’s a cool project. i also recommend @/dnficrecs on twt bc they do a really good job of promoting all sorts of dnf fics + they follow a bunch of epic authors

like salt route kinda gets a pass bc it was. a dream. but i feel like snowgrave works the way it does bc it makes a terrible sort of sense for Noelle - she's easily pushed around but doesn't want to be, she's trying to trust a childhood friend, she's half-convinced nothing happening is real. she falls into this weird brittle mix of passively agreeing with kris while also exercising her newfound "strength" to get what she (thinks she) wants without caring, she dissociates and tunes out things she's not ready to accept (something she probably has practice with, looking at her family history). the soul exploits the relationship between kris and noelle that already exists, twisting it from "a childhood friend she trusts" to "the only person she can rely on". it all Tracks

so when I see, like, swatch or whoever else behaving in the same way - concerned but unable to object, dissociating, trying to convince themselves in specific ways - it doesn't quite track for me, and neither does the soul's execution method. the method of "push unwaveringly and refuse to let up" worked on Noelle bc she's Noelle. find other methods for other characters! tell spamton it's the only way he'll ever be big again and showcase that the soul is the light of heaven to convince him that this is his Last Shot. deceive swatch into thinking this is what queen wants them to do and offer praise on how well they're murdering people. tell nubert it's part of bro code that they have to help you (altho this would never work). whatever. and have them react accordingly, justifying this shit in their own special ways - some might be too eager and go after targets without you, some might snap and try and fight kris, some might take it on with a smile and serene grace, whatever. they're different people and that's half the fun ("""fun""")

i really really dislike what feels like majority of the interpretation of the legolas/gimli relationship, like the way people portray them is sooo weird…the constant mutual antagonizing and the focus on bickering!!!! its another movie adaptation thing, because those removed most, if not all tenderness from them (the miniscule gay budget got used up for sam & frodo i guess). the appeal of gimli and legolas is not that they bicker the appeal is that they love eachother so much despite the general tensions between their peoples (although im not a fan of those tensions being overplayed for dramatics) and despite erus prophecy that there would always be conflict between elves and dwarves!!!!!!!!!!

i dislike the common fanon/movie portrayal of gimli but i think ive actually talked enough about that so im gonna talk about legolas because i also disagree with the common interpretations his character seems to find, although it doesnt bother me as much as with gimli, mostly because people still think hes cool. ANYWAYS! i think painting legolas as super hair- and beauty-obsessed (to the point of it bordering on homophobia) was luckily mostly left in the past, though pinterest still bombards me with bad memes, but i still really hate it 😒 another common thing ive seen, thats also more current, is legolas as an idiot who eats bugs or whatever which IS more fun than the first one and also closer to his book-self but i still dislike it simply because i hate when a happy/optimistic character gets headcanoned as being stupid…its unappealing and boring and i dont think its implied anywhere that legolas is exceptionally dumb :( i do like weird kid legolas a lot though hes special to me <3.

anyways since were on the topic of legolas lets talk about his family since thats another fandom/HOBBIT MOVIES favorite to distort! legolas mother is very very likely a silvan elf and very likely not dead in my opinion . i personally think silvan elves are neutral/if not positively inclined towards dwarves 👍 dont like the common fanon of extreme hatred that was taught to legolas by his parents and also dont dont dont like fanon thranduil & everything the hobbit movies made him out to be!!!!!!! i dont doubt that thranduil had some ill will towards dwarves since the whole thingol slaying and doriath thing… but thranduil is canonically a very good king and very kind, and i dont think he would let a grudge against a specific dwarf clan define his relations to a neighbouring kingdom that doesnt even belong to the same clan!!! someone who kept his kingdom save and out of trouble for so long and also has the closest relations to their neighbouring kingdom of men out of all the elven realms would be better than that and atleast be neutral and not hostile sorry this wasnt meant to be about the hobbit movies but i could go ON a out them i cant see legolas in those without laughing at him dear god. the implication that legolas, who supposedly hated dwarves, shared a horse with gimli and then was a changed man is very funny though.

also, since im going off on a tangent anyways, i think mîm didnt do anything wrong and also thingol and the dwarven smiths were both at fault for the conflict. sorry for the dwarf bias but someone has to be on their side because i still see too many people hating on them

back to lotr: i think blond blue eyed legolas is boring, i hate what they did to elrond and boromir in the movies, i think saruman and sauron being basically brothers is a very funny interpretation that we should talk about more and i hateee almost all modern lotr aus because its hars to replicaze into modern world and also aragorn would NOT be a CEO!!!!!!!!!! a good king in tolkienverse is benevolent and puts his subjects first and he is a healer. i tried to find out if we know how long exactly the dwarves were imprisoned, and it seems it was about 20 days, while gollum was there for around 90 days, so perhaps they would have let the dwarves get some fresh hair eventually as well . not that gloin wasnt rightfully angry, he was! and still very gracious about it . love gloin hes great

thanks for the note about yuuri using 'atashi' while skating Eros at first! i got curious because i wasn't totally sure but i thought i remembered him using 'boku' for himself generally (as opposed to viktor and yurio who use the more arrogant 'ore'), so you saying he used 'boku' in ep 6 threw me a bit BUT i didn't realise he didn't use it when skating Eros before and that's a really cool detail showing him getting into the character of the seductress!! i love stuff like that and i do agree it's different if he's portraying a female character vs if he's skating in a feminine way as himself (though i don't think i'm at all qualified to ascertain whether he does still skate femininely in/after ep 6 or not).

re: presentation and how much different yoi characters care about it or how they (want to) present, that's another fascinating topic and ties in with my wonderings about how they relate to gender and gender norms (as presentation is closely linked to those). i would say that yes, we can see especially JJ and yurio caring about how they are read by others and really being invested in conveying a specific persona, it's most explicit with them. BUT i think we can see other characters being invested in some sort of performance. i would viktor was that way pre-yuuri, but well, famously and fortunately yuuri encourages him to drop that act. i also think chris might also be quite invested in his flirty/sexy persona, but it's not something that's so much in the spotlight (well, it is, but i think his whole deal is also trying to convince people it's entirely effortless, so his striving for it isn't highlighted. which is not to say it doesn't come easy to him, but no social performance is ever completely "natural" – though that's the sociologist in me speaking). then you have seung-gil who is a minor character but i think wants to come off as aloof, michele who's really big on his protective big brother act, etc. they are more minor but i still think they are interesting, especially since a lot of them seem to relate to masculinity (i'm sticking to the male characters for the sake of this analysis, so that it's not super long lol. and also bcs academically i specialized in masculinities and bcs it's easier to analyse the male skaters, whose inner monologues we get an insight into).

chris seems to want to be a sexy, flirty, charming man. i wouldn't go as far as to call him effeminate, but his masculinity is definitely a distinctly gay, flamboyant sort of masculinity (to me flamboyance is different from effeminacy and i don't think any yoi character is specifically effeminate, at least not the way i think of the word, but i do definitely think viktor, chris and phichit could be very accurately described as flamboyant). otabek doesn't seem that concerned with portraying a specific image, but he does talk about having to find his own path in skating and fascinatingly enough it is suggested that due to not being good at ballet he struggled to find peace with the fact that he cannot move as "femininely" as other male singles skaters can... so the opposite of what you might expect of a man (being concerned about lack of elegance – implicitly associated with femininity – rather than lack of manliness). seung-gil wants to be seen as aloof, and emotional repression is a big part of masculine norms. michele's whole schtick is honestly pretty sexist and he is very much striving for the man-protector role. georgi meanwhile wants to "save" anya from her new bf = man-savior/man-hero (this is made interesting by the fact that he conveys this in routines where he wears rather feminine costumes and portrays female characters). emil's focus is on superhumanness, and physical prowess is another big part of hegemonic masculine norms (but otherwise he's quite laid-back and more of a carefree persona. this can also be a form of emotional repression due to masculine norms, but he doesn't get a lot of screen time so we don't see to what extent that's a conscious performance, unlike seung-gil who we see cry and contradict his own words when he says he doesn't care abt the audience's cheers. emil seems a lot less invested in masculinity than some other characters, but bcs of the superhumanness thing i would still say there is an element of it). guang hong's FS (i think it's his FS?) is about fighting gangsters or something??? again a stereotypically "masculine" thing (strength, heroism, physical prowess, smarts, violence... but it doesn't fit him much/it's unclear how much he's able to relate to that role. could be a hint that he's trying to appear more masculine but kind of still failing due to his youthful appearance/almost childish innocence? i wonder why he picked that role...).

and then you have viktor, yuuri, phichit, minami, and i guess leo? hopefully i'm not forgetting anyone. my point is they all either get over trying to present a certain way (viktor), are sometimes dishonest but not because they want to give a certain impression but due to mental health issues/being a private person (yuuri), or just. are shown caring about other things more – yuuri's approval (minami), music/friends (leo), friends/hamsters/ice show/a beloved film/the relationship between thailand and skating (phichit). so masculinity doesn't figure in their narratives in any distinct way (unless i'm forgetting things which i might be). minami's competitiveness with yuuri (is it competitiveness or is it just adoration? i think there is some competitiveness to it) could be related to some idea of trying to find one's place in the masculine hierarchy, and phichit's emphasis on being a successful thai skater has an element of heroism in it, maybe, but they are at least a lot less dominant than with the other characters (and also, all the characters are competitive – duh – and representing a certain country, so these aren't very unique).

when we focus specifically on vitya and yuuri, though... idk if i'm just biased but i think yuuri's striving to get better isn't ever really tied to masculinity, it's more about self-discovery and mental health, and though self-confidence and emotional stability can be seen as masculine, they are just generally healthy things to have and not so clearly just masculine norms (and yuuri doesn't seem to want to improve in this area because he doesn't feel masculine enough; that's not a topic for him, it seems). he wants to win, he sure is competitive, but that's so tied with his admiration/love of viktor and his frustration with not being able to skate to his full potential that it's difficult to see the potential masculinity element in that as very relevant (again, it's not the point). and viktor was androgynous and gender nonconforming throughout a big part of his competitive career, is a lot more focused on surprising people, on allowing yuuri to meet his full potential, on loving yuuri and regaining his passion for skating... again, no obvious, immediately clear masculinity element there? i think v. and y.'s narratives are just so much more about love and self-love than anything else haha and i find that so interesting... like there is love in the narratives/motivations of several other characters but for them it's very divorced from gender norms and they generally don't seem invested in them, contrary to most other characters (save for phichit, minami and leo i suppose). and i think that's amazing and such an interesting detail???? especially since yoi is a love story and a queer love story at that?? idk maybe i'm reading too much into it and i don't really have an explanation for why it is specifically phichit, minami and leo who also seem less invested in gender norms/roles/performances but it's really fun to look at.

One of the many things I love about YOI is how it ignores gender norms. Like Viktor wearing androgynous costumes as a junior because it matched his looks? Lovely. Yuuri learning how to dance like a woman as he explores Eros? Great! Let this boy do whatever he needs to find his unique Eros expression. Mila practising lifts on Yurio? Please give me more.

None of these form a pattern that indicates anything about these characters' gender or, more generally their queerness (spoiler: these could apply to a number of labels or to none; gender is a societal construct and the reasons to not want to conform to it are various), the show is that vague and it seems a deliberate choice. Viktor eventually changed his style and image. Yuuri finds his unique, masculine expression of Eros in episode 6 when he seduces Viktor with his own charms (as conveyed through the use of the masculine pronoun "boku"). These characters live in a world where gender norms don't matter and where everyone can express themselves and explore certain aspects of their personality without anyone telling them that it's not "appropriate" for their gender.

And you can spin this further. If Viktor wants to wear a women's yukata because he loves the flower print, he can do that. If Yuuri wants to do ballet in pointé shoes because it challenges his sense of balance, no one can stop him. (In my fics, Viktor wears such shoes for that purpose and because he loves the laces.) If Chris wants to wear an evening gown and high heels because he loves how it emphasises his thighs and his bum, he can just go for it. If Yurio wants to wear a mini-skirt to ripped jeans, no one will bully him for it. If Mila wants to skate in black skates because it matches the colour of her costumes better than white skates, no one would care (same goes for white skates for any of the male characters). If Phichit wants to wear make-up, no one would give him strange looks.

The beauty of Yuri on Ice is that the characters are free to do these things without having to fear judgement or repercussions. They are free to choose how they want to express themselves, be it for image reasons, because of a character they portray in their figure skating routines, because it ties into a certain aspect of their queerness, or because they just prefer this over a traditional expression. In the world of YOI, it just doesn't matter. I would love to live in that world.

(You might notice that I don't count hair length as gender norm because for many people it's a stylistic choice. I'm thinking of all the metalheads and women with pixie haircuts, which have been normalised in most societies I know of.)

“I’m not upset at you.” They sighed, lowering their voice. “I just… I don’t want you beating yourself up all the time, okay? You’re so nice to other people, and you should be nice to yourself, too.” The two of them both stared quietly at the ground.

Brian flinched for a second as he felt something wrap around his midsection. He looked down to see Xeno wrapping their arms around him in a tight embrace. They hadn’t used words, but they didn’t have to. Brian smiled softly and returned the gesture.

anyway I Love Them So Much AAAAAAAAA have a lil thingy this inspired me to do with them!!! currently they live in my head rent free 24/7 and sometimes get little short stories that are mostly slice-of-life plus one big dramatic piece that will theoretically be the climax of their book. i would like them to have a whole book instead of this current situation. but i do not yet know what the plot of the book will be, is the problem. i know what i want it to be about, i just don’t have the specific way it plays out nailed down yet. but as soon as i figure it out, they will finally get to move from short slice of life scenes to their actual novel. and from there who knows where i’ll go with it. maybe it’ll be the wip i feel is good enough to start trying to find an agent and get published. i kind of hope so lol. i love them sm i want to share them with the world and give autistic and aro teens or twentysomethings a fun fantasy book with no romo and multiple different aro identities, and with multiple autistic characters with very different sensory needs who have learned to coexist and support each other so they both get their needs met. i think that would be neat.

Xeno let themself into the apartment, hanging their keys on the empty hook by the door and kicking their shoes under the bench.

“Hi Xee!” Brian greeted from the couch, looking up in delight at their appearance. He was curled up in the corner, throw blanket wrapped around his legs, with a book in his lap.

“Where are your reading glasses?” Xeno greeted in response, frowning at him. Internally, they felt a wave of relief that they were home and with Brian and did not have to worry about monitoring their tone anymore today, because Brian didn’t mind if they weren’t expressive or if they sounded angry when they weren’t. They slid their backpack off their shoulders and set it down on one of the chairs by the tiny kitchen table.

“What?” Brian reached up and touched his empty face. “Oh. Shit. Thank you.” He got up, leaving the book open and facedown on the couch, and hastened down the hall towards his room.

“Mmhm,” Xeno responded, opening the snack drawer and staring into it before selecting a squeezy applesauch pouch, this one flavored with mango. As they cracked it open and put the end in their mouth, they went over to where Brian had left his book, selected a bookmark from one of the tiny drawers set in the side of the coffee table, and placed it in his spot, closing the book to save the spine.

Brian reappeared, rectangular glasses with thick tortoiseshell frames—reminiscent of an old man’s—perched on his face, lightly chewing on the knuckle of his forefinger. He resettled himself on the couch, fussing with the throw blanket until it was to his liking, and resumed reading while Xeno finished their applesauce.

They discarded the empty packaging, picked up their backpack off the chair, and went to put it away in their room and go over their homework for the evening. Perhaps ten minutes into this activity they paused and looked up, frowning at the wall of their room.

Brian had been chewing on his knuckle. He’d stopped when he sat down because his hands were busy with the throw blanket. Had he stayed stopped? They snapped their laptop shut, tucked it under their arm, and marched back out to the living room.

Brian had not stayed stopped, and by now was gnawing absently on the whole side of his hand. Xeno huffed out a breath of dissatisfaction and tossed their laptop onto the empty part of the sofa.

“Huh?” Brian looked up, not having seemed to notice them until now.

“Give me your hands,” Xeno demanded, holding out both their hands.

“Oh,” Brian said guiltily, obediently placing both his hands resting palm-up in their smaller ones. “Sorry.” His shoulders curled inwards.

Xeno frowned. “Take that back right now,” they ordered, taking a seat beside him and examining the tooth marks imprinted on his hand.

“…Un-sorry?” Brian tried.

“Better.” Xeno smoothed at a particularly reddened dent in his skin with their thumb. “Where’s your necklace?”

“It broke. Yesterday.” Brian frowned. “I chewed through it. I’m going to order a replacement, I just—haven’t yet, I’ve gotta, gotta get over the old one first, you know?”

“Mm,” Xeno hummed in understanding, still soothing at his hand with their thumbs. “Gum?”

Brian made a face. “I don’t like gum,” he mumbled, but he nodded. “I guess. It’s too soft, though.”

“Better than hands,” Xeno pointed out, heading back across to the kitchen half of the living space to fish out a pack of gumballs. They selected three—two pale green limes and a yellow lemon, the flavors Brian tended towards when chewing gum—and returned, pouring them into Brian’s hand and sitting down beside him once again.

“Thank you,” Brian said, dragging out the end of the “you,” and popped the gumballs into his mouth.

“Thank me by not chewing your hands anymore, dumbass,” Xeno said, but there was no real annoyance behind it. They picked up their laptop and opened their homework once again.

There was silence for a few moments as they did their separate activities, quiet, side-by-side. The only noises in the room were the faintest sound of Brian chewing, the occasional flip of a page, and the soft clicking of Xeno’s keyboard.

“Xee?” Brian said after a moment, quiet and a little hesitant.

Xeno did not look up, but they stopped typing. “What?”

“Can I stim with your hair?—It’s fine if you don’t want me to,” he added quickly, “I can get something else to fidget with, I just—”

“Did I say no?” Xeno interrupted.

Brian blinked at them. “You didn’t say anything.” He sounded mildly confused by the question.

Xeno turned the question over in their mind, now that Brian had stopped talking and they had room to think about it. “Yes,” they decided.

“Oh, you meant I was acting like you said no,” Brian belatedly realized.

“Yes,” Xeno repeated, turning to half-lay along the couch and rest their head on his chest. They balanced their laptop on their stomach so they could continue working.

“Yay,” Brian commented under his breath, sliding his free hand into their vivid purple hair and scratching at their scalp.

Xeno leaned into his touch, relaxing against him, a nice bubble of warmth floating in their chest. This was good. A very acceptable way to spend the evening. 

Ah. Content. That was the word for the feeling in their chest, they were almost certain of it. Brian’s heart was beating against their ear, and his fingers were carding though their hair, and Xeno was content.

I’ve been a fan since: technically Andromeda, but I only played Andromeda first bc the LE was coming out in a few months. I loved the Dragon Age series before that, and I figured I would probably like ME, but the old graphics were a major turn-off for me. When the LE was announced, I got really excited bc it was another BioWare series I could binge and adore, but it wasn't out yet. My friend had just finished Andromeda and convinced me to try it, and now it's probably my favorite game series ever~

Favorite game of the series:  ME2! While I love ME3 because the graphics are beautiful, and you get more substance out of romantic relationships (Garrus, specifically), ME2 has my favorite vibe. You're kind of a rogue agent, assembling a team of the most dangerous and skilled people in the galaxy, and they all become a sort of found family for Shepard after the Alliance and the Council hang you out to dry. Plus, I love the interface for the game; the orange menu screen is easy on my eyes, and I like the clicky selection noises <3

MaleShep or FemShep?: FemShep <3 I love her so much. Played MaleShep once, and I loved him, too, but it really feels like FemShep is THE Shep to me.

Earthborn, Colonist or Spacer?: Colonist

Paragon or Renegade? Paragon (close to ParaGade, but not quite)

Biotics or Tech? Tech, but biotics are really cool.

Favorite class: Infiltrator! I don't really love any class in ME1, but ME2/3 make Infiltrator the fucking best. Tactical cloak and sniper rifle, my beloveds. Vanguard is a close second.

Favorite companions: Garrus, Zaeed, Mordin, Tali, Wrex, Grunt, EDI~

Least favorite companions: Kaidan and Jacob. I have nothing against either of them personally, honest, and I think they're generally good characters. But Kaidan bores me, I find him wholly uninteresting, and Jacob is just repackaged Kaidan, imho.

My squad selection: ME1: this changes every playthrough, honestly. Often it's Garrus and someone else, most recently Ashley. Others it's Ashley and someone else, most often Wrex. ME2: Usually Zaeed and Garrus; those two are my go-tos and my faves. Current run is Garrus and Miranda, but I've taken Grunt a fair bit. ME3 is, surprise-surprise, most often Garrus and someone else, but I try to tailor squad selection to each mission so I can get the most interesting story dialogue.

Favorite in-game romance: Shepard and Garrus <3

Other pairings I like: I cannot pair my Shep with anyone else, so it's difficult, but I do appreciate others. I like FemShep with Tali, Liara, Ashley, Miranda, and Jack (bc I just think all the characters should be bi, lol).

Favorite NPC: I'm choosing multiple--Aria T'Loak, Joker, I adore Hackett, and Anderson.

Favorite antagonist: The Illusive Man in ME2. Sure, you're cooperating with him, but he's definitely an antagonist.

Favorite mission: ME1: If we're talking purely vanilla game, probably Feros. Otherwise, maybe the Bring Down the Sky DLC. ME2: Thane's recruitment or the Suicide Mission, if we're excluding loyalty missions. ME3: Grissom Academy.

Favorite loyalty mission: Oooh, tough. I really like most of them. It's a toss-up between two, but for different reasons: either Garrus's or Samara's.

Favorite DLC: ME1: To my knowledge, there was only one for ME1, besides pinnacle Station, but that couldn't be added to the LE. ME2: Lair of the Shadow Broker--LOVE the level designs. ME3: Super original and revolutionary: the Citadel, lol. That's the canon ending in my mind. OH! But I also love the Omega DLC! Hmm...

Control, Synthesis or Destroy?: Destroy, but I also change a bunch of that ending in my mind, too. Namely, that EDI and the geth live and the Citadel isn't destroyed.

Favorite weapon: N7 Valiant sniper rifle <333

Favorite place: Omega or Illium

AAAA THANK YOU,, ✏️ - What’s your favorite thing you’ve made on this blog? WELL I'm glad you asked that actually because [THIS] post has a whole overarching backstory to it and i've been DYING to tell people bc i think it's interesting so

way way back sometime last year i came across a playlist on youtube when looking for weirdcore music, and. it was good. like really fucking good! so i checked out some other weirdcore playlists from the same person and i stumbled upon one in particular called "Whimsy Forest | A Darkening Weirdcore + Dreamcore Playlist" and it quickly became my favorite playlist of all time! i was vibing and having a GREAT time when i got to the end of the playlist and saw this

and i was IMMEDIATELY smitten. not only was this image fucking. very very cool to me, but the song was GREAT, AND!!! the two went so so well together! and? the biggest most important part?? this playlist and this image + song combo specifically was what made me realize i was weirdcoric. i HAD to figure out where this image came from.

so i began my search. and found absolutely nothing. i couldn't even find the post that 2kinoko got it from to put in the video.

so i abandoned it, since i couldn't read japanese and the words were cut off anyways, and weirdcore images like this are notoriously difficult to find.

then!! i befriended someone who DID know japanese. and my search was re-ignited.... and we still couldnt figure out where the thing came from.

months and months go by, and i eventually start up my weirdcore blog, and decide to post the pic i had of it from the playlist there! and i go on with my day

a while later i'm going thru my blog and i see a reblog on the post. someone says they recognize it, they've stumbled across a VIDEO OF IT on twitter. i get super excited... i click the link, praying that it isn't a screamer or a dead end...

and its real. it's a song. a music video. i had finally fucking found it.

i downloaded the video just in case the account or tweet was deleted, so i'd have it forever. i made a bunch of gifs of it. and i finally felt fulfilled- my months long search was over.

in the tags of the post i say that nothing i post will ever top it. i really did mean that. i cannot explain how important that gifset is to me,, it really felt like i had solved a mystery, i can still remember clearly the rush of adrenaline when i saw the neon blue sun rising over the city set.

not to get like. overly emotional on the fun ask game answer but jklJFDKSLJFDKLS i know it's not the most popular post on my blog, or even the most stimmy to a lot of people, but it represents finally figuring out an inherent intrinsic part of myself, of finding an answer to a question i had fully accepted would never be answered.

Kyidyl Does Archaeology - Part 1

About me, and about the site.

I’m gonna have to do this in parts because I tend to be, uh...wordy.  Actually...ok, so I believe very strongly that knowledge does no one any good behind a paywall, but I also have a hard time parsing it down for social media because, well, people are complex but also ADHD.  So if you guys have any feedback for me that’d be awesome.  I’ll probably do these as a series so they don’t get overwhelming to read.  Tag for ‘em will be kyidylCL

A caveat to all of these posts: archaeologists walk a fine line between “I’d love to tell you about this and here look at this cool thing” and “I don’t want to share a colleague’s forthcoming paper on social media before they publish it and also fuck looters”. We classify anyone who *isn’t* an archaeologist as a looter.  Because even when you find artefacts just lying around, as soon as you pick them up they’re removed from context and become near-useless for scientific research and data.  When we remove them we capture all that information via a prescribed methodology.  When other people remove them they tend not to.  And you can tell how legit someone is by how much they care about the context.  Context is key, that’s why we’re so meticulous.  Anyway so I can’t tell you where the site is specifically because I’m not allowed.  I also, though, have been heavily involved in this project so I’m mostly going to be telling you about my own research so it’s ok to publish it on social media.  Anyway, that’s why if you show an archaeologist something you just like found they’ll be like “gee...thanks...well...I don’t want to squelch your curiosity, buuuuuut...” 

A little bit of background on my involvement with this site: I’m a newly minted archaeologist.  I’ve had my MS a little over a year, and I’ve been doing things in that time to keep up my skills and get the field hours I need to be a registered state archaeologist (it’s basically just like a professional license for archs.) bc I didn’t get enough in school and my dissertation is on genetics and cannibalism (and if you want to know about *that* I’ll tell you, but in another post.), so yeah.  Anyway.  I’ve been volunteering with the local archaeology society, and they’re great.  They found this site because two of the members grew up in the area and just knew of its existence.  So I volunteer with them and am one of like 3 people they know who have a degree so I get to be really involved - probably more than I would be otherwise just cause people with my credentials are in short supply for them.  I’m basically the only member with a degree, and the rest are consultants they bring in for stuff like this (including the RSA who works the site - the site director.).  

Before a site can be dug there’s a lot of prep work involved.  It varies based on what kind of money you’ve got and access.  We have lots of access - it’s on private land owned by someone who is childhood friends with a member of the arch society - but almost zero money.  Before I showed up, in summer 2018, they did a series of what are called shovel tests.  Basically there’s a grid laid over the site and where the grid lines intersect they dug a round pit down to what archaeologists call “the sterile layer”, IE, where there’s no evidence of human activity.  Basically, you dig small holes to see if it’s worth digging big holes and in this case it was worth it.  

When I started working with them, I took all of the material from the test pits and sorted and catalogued it.  We’ll come back to this in the next post, so remember this.  Pause.  

I forgot to tell you where the site was.  Like not specifically, I can’t do that, but I CAN tell you that it’s in the Shenandoah valley.  Wanna see pics? Yeah, you wanna see pics (I took all of the images I’m gonna be posting so I give myself permission to post them. :P):

The site has been occupied for a long time (how long? Well, that’ll happen in the pottery post soooorry. ;), and I think you guys can see why.  It’s also on a slight ridge overlooking a river so it’s near fresh water, easily defensible, and is fertile.  Speaking of which... 

It’s also what archaeologists call “highly disturbed”. See, after the colonizers drove the natives out of the Blue Ridge mountains, they started farming the fertile land in the valley.  This site was farmed for several decades, and not only that but during the civil war they dug a big ‘ole defensive trench through the middle of it.  So whilst farming disturbs the finds, it tends to a, only be a max of 15 inches deep and b, keep the finds in the same relative area they’re pulled out of.  And we can tell where that layer ends (I’ll show you that in the post about our pits bc I don’t think Tumblr will let me add more pics.), so even though it destroys features and damages things it’s a lot less destructive than, say....building a giant war trench and shooting at each other.  

The site is an entire settlement.  It’s...several acres in size.  There are burial cairns in the woods around it, and some rumors that human remains have been found there in the past - although we have not, as of yet, found any (much to my personal dismay because, well...bioarchaeologist.). 

So who lived here? Well, when the colonizers drove out the natives they didn’t exactly keep good records about who lived where, but generally speaking the site is on both Massawomeck and Manahoac land. We don’t know which group lived there, and there were other groups coming and going in the general area so it could have also been Piscataway or Potomac or even one of the later nations that formed the Iroquois.  Based on the age though I think the best candidates are the Massawomeck or Manahoac.
