Have you heard of the concept of a sin eater?

For those who haven't, a sin eater is an idea that cropped up in Welsh practice as a way to absolve the dead of sins post mortem. Someone would be hired, generally someone destitute who had little other options, to take the sins of the deceased upon themselves by consuming a ritual meal. To be a sin eater, you had to be desperate enough to take someone else's sins upon yourself to survive.

While Shen Yuan wasn't given a choice in his transmigration, he was given the choice to continue living. In order to do so, he would have to take up the mantle of the Scum Villain, a man near universally loathed. A sin eater takes the sins the deceased has committed, in order to purify them and let them be forgiven. And later on, they take the sinners punishment in their stead.

Which is exactly what Shen Yuan thought was coming for him. He spent so long repairing Shen Jiu's reputation, and still believed he would be torn apart for another man's crimes.

Shen Yuan gave Shen Jiu forgiveness, even if that forgiveness was due to the actions of another. Shen Jiu gave Shen Yuan a second chance at life. Or did they really? Neither of them asked for this.

Shen Jiu never wanted to die, or be forgiven. And Shen Yuan never wanted his fate.

Isn't that the inherent cruelty of a sin eater?
