This chapter is so telling to re-read, because you can really tell how disjointed Chip feels, without Mikey here— To me, at least. Like, the friendship she has/had with Richie is so barely present with him in this chapter— And she THINKS they’re not close!!! Bitch!!! It’s been you two the whole time!!! I love seeing how much this changed, by Ad Interim. Our baby got her groove back. And you can see it w/ Tina too! I love my mother…. Boots the house…. She’s so very good at seeing people now, I love HER!!!

BABYBOY TIME!!! Cutest interaction in the whole series you say?? Yeah that’s probably true. I was gonna say I gotta try to one up myself but to be fair there’s something about introductions that can’t be matched. Alas. Perchance (you can’t just say—).

100% this was Tony being the guy per usual but I also think like, she’s real special cause she knows Carmen pretty well through word of mouth— To her they are kinda like old friends. And I think that’s also what contributes so well to her COMPLETELY DISARMING HIS ASS as he gets to know her back lmao.

That plate was so fucking close to being frisbee’d— It was gonna be this whole tragic mirroring scene to a scene I had considered with Mikey but pivoted because it just ,,,, did not hit. That plate sure would’ve hit the fuckin wall though yesssiirrrr— (I have much to say about the You’re Nothing, but I will get into that in a later ask down the line I SWEAR THERE’S A WHOLE THING!!)

Anyways, favourite barista !!! I love that Chip has essentially learned every trade by wanting to impress someone. Her dad, Syd, Mikey. She’s so people pleaser. Number 1 people pleaser, my beloved. And then she makes Carmen arguably one of the best coffees!!  Immediately trying to impress him after 2 fucking seconds. She’s so fucking dumb. I love her. She is me and I am her. 

I would actually love to hear ad nauseam why The Berf shirt is so unforgettable. Actually no I get it. It’s them. This whole moment is just very them. You can see their friendship start to finally peek out and it’s a real joy.

Now Chip’s coffee order— This honestly went unwritten for so long for a couple reasons. 1 - I rarely drink coffee so I suck at having opinions. 2 - Tony is really just an OC at this point but it is still technically insert, so like, whatever YOUR coffee is, is her’s.

But like… now? Between u and me? And the 3 other people that will actually bother to read this ask? I think she’d do a cortado. Half steamed milk, Half espresso. It’s simple so it’s very switchable but I think still very her, yknow?

We sometimes get glimpses of Zs life thanks to others. For example, her attending Kehlani's baby shower, JoJo (Levesque) sharing the flowers that Z sent her after her album release or seeing her at a Thanksgiving dinner at Zs house, Gigi Hadid sharing the flowers that Z sent her after the birth of her daughter, Storm talking about Z being one of the few people that has shown real support throughout her career, always available when she had questions, Z showing up at the wedding of a little known music engineer that worked with her, her friend Carmen showing that she was staying at Zs house during the pandemic, pap pics showing that Zink was with her in Rome and is with her in Boston, etc. And that's how we are going to know a little bit about her life, not through her sm posts. Like you said, Z has enough success to be able to be more private. Most of us have our social media set to private because we don't want to share details of our private life with strangers. The same happens with most celebs

I agree with a lot of this, but I do think some of these are industry acquaintances versus people she would consider an actual friend and I do think Z is good about keeping up her industry acquaintances--which is what I would consider someone like Gigi. Kehlani, who she has a legit history with and known since she was a child, I would consider more of a friend.

And yes, Zink was with her both in Rome and at least some point in Boston. I think sometimes fans forget Zink exists solely because she has no public socials.

See I just find that SUPER unhealthy. Like saying “I don’t like actual gay music I only like it when it’s implied” is weird to me. I also don’t think you should be relishing like “looking” for gay clues.

As I’ve said there are Taylor songs - and songs by other artists - I have queer interpretations for. The one I feel strongest about is Lana’s Diet Mountain Dew. Like I literally can’t picture a man in it. I can try figure out how Lana meant it - because I don’t think she meant it to sound gay lol that happened on accident 😭 - but “baby put on heart shaped sunglasses coz we’re gonna take a ride” without a “he said” before it does sound like it’s the narrator speaking and mostly heart shaped sunglasses are worn by women. I think Lana meant the guy says it to her and also says the “never was there ever a girl so pretty” stuff but it’s easy to hear it as gay.

But here’s the thing: me finding it easy to picture two girls or relaying it to a particular moment in my life isn’t like… gonna make Lana gay.

And when Lana sings about how the girls and boys love Carmen that’s like a CANONICALLY gay line but she’s super not bi lol she’s just a dope ally.

Idk why we have to leapfrog from “here’s a cool way to hear this song” to “TAYLOR SWIFT GOLD STAR DYKE” tbh and throw gay women under the bus to do it.

Chapter Seven

CW: Refences to PTSD and Homophobia 

The next morning, Aden checked in on Todd after waking up.

He was still asleep, and it was just past dawn. Thinking he needed his rest, Aden let him be and went downstairs to make a meal for them both.

He went over an old recipe book, then tutted when he opened up the fridge and found a stack of ready to heat meals. He took out one package, then sniffed.

Mortals actually eat this vile pap? Aden winced at the scents. This will not do. This will definitely not do.

He perked up when he heard the rooster. If there was a rooster, there were bound to be hens. Hens meant eggs. He looked around for a basket, found one, and made his way to the door.

Someone was already standing on the front porch with their back turned to him. “Sorry to show up so early Mr. Grayson, I…” The visitor found themselves face to face with Aden instead. “Holy fuck, you’re gorgeous.”

Aden was probably the most beautiful man Carmen Hernandez had ever seen. She sighed dreamily as she was overcome with the urge to run a hand through his wavy black hair. She then came to her senses and kept her hands to her sides.

“I am Aden, actually, I am staying with Mr. Grayson,” He shook her hand. 

Aden rolled his eyes when he picked up the Father’s chuckles. “Can I help you with anything?” he asked. 

“Oh, sorry.” the visitor suddenly remembered her manners. “I’m Carmen Hernandez.” She tried hard not to moon over her client’s guest. “I’m the vet. Mr. Grayson said the goats were due for their checkups.” 

Aden remembered the goats. “Ahh. The little ankle-biters need some sort of inspection?” she nodded. “Well, I am certain you know where they are?” He remembered his first task of the day. "Along with the location of the chickens?" he asked hopefully.

“Yes, I do.” Carmen picked up her bags, turned on her heel and walked back out. "They are both together." 

They reached the sheds quickly enough. "Are you new here, Aden?" Carmen got into a pair of overalls and donned her gloves.

"Very new." Aden opened the door to the coop and walked inside. "I arrived only recently."

"And Mr. Grayson just let you stay?" Carmen pulled out a file, kept it to a side along with a pen. “He did,” The hens let Aden collect eggs without hassle. “He let me stay after he found out I lost my home." After a fashion, that is.  

Since he didn’t hear from Father, he thought it best to still his tattoos and be vague.

 “That’s odd.” Carmen was stunned. "Mr. Grayson doesn’t get close to anyone." She checked the first goat, took a blood sample, and made notes. "He keeps to himself mostly."

Interesting. "Really? Why is that?"

Carmen remembered all of the talks around town. She was unsure of how much Aden knew, so she stuck to only the basics. "War-related PTSD." she caught his look of confusion. "Shell shock?" nothing. "Combat fatigue?" still nothing. "Soldier's heart?" ding ding ding ding, she chuckled to herself as he caught on. 

Aden heard of a similar phrase from ancient times. Soldiers from Rome and Greece suffered from it. The name they used was slightly different. There was also no remedy.

"Has he received help for it?" he asked. 

"He has a therapist." Carmen fussed over a kid that worried her for pets. "It’s been slow going for him."

Aden finished with the egg collecting. "Can I ask why?"

Carmen looked around to make sure Todd wasn’t about the place. "Some of the people keep their distance because he’s into guys. They make horrible jokes about it, call him all sorts of awful names. It really hurts his feelings.” 

Aden wasn’t bothered about the revelation. He was however bothered by the way Todd was being treated. “Why would they do that?”

“Sometimes people think anything outside the norm is wrong.” She looked at him with curious eyes. "Do you think it’s horrible? Him being the way he is?"

"Him liking men?" Aden saw no harm in the question. "No."  The Father does not think it horrible either.  "I do not."

She looked visibly relieved. "So it doesn’t bother you?"

"No." Aden was a little hungry and wondered if Carmen would stay for the first meal. "It does not bother me. Besides, there is no shame in him finding only men attractive." 

Carmen playfully smacked him on the shoulder. "My man." She finished up what she was doing. "Walk me back in, and I’ll help you fix up some breakfast." 

“Thank goodness you offered. I am useless with…” he racked his mind for the word Todd used. “Stoves.”

She smirked. “Someone else took care of everything then?”

“You could say that, yes.”

Carmen packed up her bags. “Come on. I’ll show you how it’s done.”

Azeroth, who had been listening in through the link, found something oddly familiar about Carmen. “Brother, does she look familiar to you?”

“I have no idea. Why?”

“Could you just look at her again?”

“What?”

“Just. Look. Now.”

Aden sighed, then discretely looked over to Carmen while she put her bags away in her truck. She mumbled something when her keys fell.

Azeroth had gone quiet. “Brother, is something going on?”

“Nothing. I thought she looked familiar, that is all.”

Aden helped carry a box inside and put Azeroth’s odd reaction out of his mind.
