“I’m going to eat something more before it gets too late,” I tell him, rising from the table and opening the fridge.

He watches as I get out a bowl and start to mix yogurt, honey, and frozen berries.

“Do you want one too?” I ask and he nods. “Okay, I’ll make one for me and one for the baby.”

“Don’t call me that when I’m not…” he trails off.

“What?” I ask, reaching in the cupboard for a second bowl. “When you’re not…?” I set his bowl on the counter and start to spoon yogurt into it. It’s really a simple snack but I like that he asked me to make it for him, even though he’s the one who cooks us dinner every night.

“When I’m not, um, you know…”

“Uh-huh…” I prompt him, adding berries to both bowls. I set his in front of him. “When you…”

“When I’m wearing, um, pants and…”

“Go on.”

“When I don’t have like, a diaper on and stuff.”

“Ohh,” I say, pretending to be surprised. “So you didn’t like that?”

“N-no, I…”

“I bet you want juice with that, don’t you?” I stand up and go to the cupboard, and very slowly take his sippy cup down from the shelf. I cross to the fridge and open the door. He watches me without saying anything, but doesn’t stop me. When I set the carton of juice down on the counter he reaches for it, but I shake my head. “No, honey, I don’t want you to spill it.” I pour his juice in the cup and screw on the lid.

“I…you…you don’t need…”

“You are soo easy to tease,” I say, pushing the juice towards him. “You don’t want your juice like that? I can go get you a grown-up glass.” I start to rise.

“No, that’s okay, I…” He pulls the juice towards himself and I watch him intently. He starts to raise it to his mouth. “Stop looking at me!”

“Okay, I won’t.” I start to eat my snack, occasionally glancing at him out of the corner of my eye. He keeps taking small sips of juice and then setting the cup down, hands shaking a little. “Honey, eat your yogurt, too.” I grab his hand off the table and pull it towards his bowl. “It’s getting late and you shouldn’t eat too close to bedtime.”

He starts to eat. “This is really good,” he says quietly. “Thank you for making it.”

I snort. “That’s funny to say after you made us such a nice dinner tonight.”

“I know, I…”

“Eat your food,” I say again, reaching out and putting his spoon in his hand and gently closing his fingers around it.

We finish eating in silence. “You look a little tired. Are you getting tired?”

He nods and I stand up, stacking the bowls and his cup and putting them in the sink. “Okay, let’s go start to wind down.” I pull his chair out and lift him up easily, carrying him bridal-style down the hallway and to our bedroom. He doesn’t fuss now, quietly running his hand over his lips and nose, eyelids drooping.

I lay him out on the bed. “Okay, honey, I can tell you need a diaper tonight, don’t you?”

“Mhmm,” he says.

“Okay, help me get your pants off. There you go. Oh, you’re so good for me tonight.” I lean down and kiss his cheek. “Let’s get this on and then we’ll read a story for a little while and then we can get to sleep. Does that sound good?”

He nods.

“Good, honey. Now lift up your hips and help me get you padded.”

asdfghjkl alhamdulillah not only did i pass i did extremely well for my circumstances and am quite proud of meself. celebratory doodle for now bc my final is in a few days and i still need to study for it lol
