So I had a debate with friends today, about a very controversial subject, and I realised afterwards that I, as someone who grew up in a German cultural context, am very sensible and careful when it comes to German History and the dark past with nazis. My friends did not grow up in Germany, nor did they get the same education or awareness about the atrocities done by Hitler and his parti. One of them jokingly said some nazi phrases that are forbidden in Germany. Those phrases being "H*** H*tl*r" and "Arbeit macht frei". I told them that those phrases are illegal in Germany in public and they replied that they thought that this law was dumb, because freedom of speech, and because people uttering thsee words in public might just be joking.

As a German: I think this law valid. The far right-wing is currently dangerously growing in Europe again and people who say those phrase out loud in public are definitely radicalist right wing adepts.

My friends, non-German, think this law makes no sense. Because people have the right to freedom of speech and might just be joking.

So I am curious to know what other people, German and non-Germans, think of this.

I was curious if this was a common experience bc this was a fairly standard "first day of class" thing for several years throughout grade school and even a few times in high school for me. I specifically remember the wordage being "what's your nationality?" Which is wild bc most everyone's nationality in that scenario would technically be American, right?

If you want to: include the overall demographic of the area you grew up in the tags, bc I think that might affect whether this was a common experience or not. Maybe include your general age, too? We're spitballin' here, obviously.
