❝ you hide it well but i can tell by the look in your eyes . ❞ ( joe to nicky )
ღ memes. ╱ always accepting.
If anyone knew him it was Joe. To the outside world he was elusive, never quite saying everything he thought, and walling his heart off from the inevitable hurts their existences would bring them. But to Joe? He might as well have been water —— transparent and see-through.
"Tell me what is on my mind then," There is a curbed softness to his words as he offers the slightest of smiles. To reassure that he was fine. He would always be as long as the other was by his side.

Nicky can understand why one might be reluctant to trust in their position. He had seen it before, endured it by someone he had known for centuries; if he wasn’t capable of healing rapidly –– he’d still carry those scars. In some ways, he does. But none in the ways that etched a story for the outside world.
He doesn’t really know what to expect. Perhaps just a friendship sewn from similar circumstances? There are so few that live as long as they do: it can be a lonely thing, existence never waning as the world around you dies and constantly changes. So he does sit, finding an empty table and hands fold across his lap nearly and curious bright hues find the other again. “Just tea, please — tell me how you spend your time.” Because they were never short on time it seemed.
Though he was hesitant to get caught up in any conflicts, Barty would hardly say he was only interested in himself. His Cafe was a testament to that, he thought, offering sanctuary and shelter to those who needed it without putting him directly in a position to make any choices.
In any case, Barty's reluctance to commit also tends to mean he's not prone to grudges (a tiring concept, when you live as long as they do). "Truer words." Barty agrees. "You're right - better late than never, and I am glad that you're here." He sweeps an arm. "Come sit. Can I get you anything?"

Nicolo
NICOLÒ DI GENOVA
Favorite thing about them: The historical context in which he met his soulmate is really interesting to me, I'm so weak for enemies to lovers. I know the director or whoever said that they only killed each other once, but that's a LIE: they killed each other repeatedly, then hesitated to even become friends, I know best
Least favorite thing about them: He would've benefited from more dialogue [where he could unleash the inner beast and gesticulate profoundly (4rth generation italian immigrant, I am allowed all the slander do NOT come after me hiss)] so he could have more character traits established. I know he wasn't the focus of the movie, but he's SO quiet that I barely remember a defining character trait
Favorite line: Like I said, he barely talks so I don't remember anything he said lol
brOTP: Nah
OTP: Joe and Nick, my silly rabbits, my wounded soldiers,
nOTP: I physically can not accept him with Nile. We can have a debate over him and Andy or Booker, I don't quite like it but it doesn't repulse me. Nick and Nile though? He's her guncle (gay uncle, if you will)
Random headcanon: He's quiet the way that he is because if he truly frees himself, he starts screaming every sentence he pronounces. Nicest man you ever met, yells every word for some reason
Unpopular opinion: I like Joe better. Is this even unpopular? He's just so much cooler
Song I associate with them: La Differenza Tra Me E Te - Tiziano Ferro
Favorite picture of them: I love to see the gay agenda being spreaded
[ IMG ID: Joe and Nicky from The Old Guard, kissing. / END ID ]

one is by chance
two is a coincidence
three is a pattern
Well, here I am with my totally not required essay about the kind of male character I always fall for: the soft male character which is often the green one in his group.
Why "the green character"?! Because the typical male character I always get attached is always associated with green. Green is the color of peace, serenity, nature. And so he is*.
He's calm and collected. The responsible and dependable member of the group, more than the leader themself (the green character is never the leader, maybe the second in command, but not the leader).
He has black/brown hair, light sad eyes and a dark past. Because he might be peaceful now but he has known violence. He has fought in a war or in a battle, maybe on the wrong side of it, and he learnt to appreciate the value of peace and dialogue instead of fight and violence. Often he's hated by his own people. Because of a prophecy, because of his ancestors. Maybe because of something he did or something he is. Anyway he is an outcast, but this doesn't stop him from trying to help others.
In the group, his found family, he’s the cook, the mother hen. Compassionate, selfless and nurturing, he’s the one who always takes care of the other members. And even if the others react with rudeness to those attentions he never ceases taking care of the ones he’s elected as his fond family because there’s a kind of martyr syndrome in him. Maybe because he needs to redeem himself.
He’s wise and pensive. He always thinks before he speaks which makes him look like a sort of ancient sage but at the same time he has a not so hidden playful side (maybe he has a thing for puns).
He’s always kind, even with his enemies. And he’s competent, mercilessly competent in his deadly skills. Like nature he can be quiet and hospitable but he can be destructive when he feels his loved ones threatened.
Plus: he's always paired with the playful, maybe a bit childish member of the group. The daredevil, the selfless, the one that doesn't think very much about their own safety and just put themselves before enemies in order to protect others. The ray of sunshine with a big heart that warm the room with their only presence. Normally associated with a warm color (red, pink, orange**). They're so different with the green character but they can't think of themselves apart from him.
*speaking of Nicolò di Genova the color classification is totally based on my perception of the character because there’s no color scheme for “real persons”, of course. But he perfectly fits my idea of the green character so… let’s just say that the green detail is brought by Mr. Marinelli eyes ^-^
**Yusuf is orange in my mind, vibrant orange. Because he’s joyful and extraverted and loves to enjoy the pleasures of life. Plus his name means tangerine 🍊
Edit: how could I forget him?! And his fiery brother?!?

chuck, can i ask about your thoughts on nicolò di genova from the old guard?
you can ABSOLUTELY ask me for my thoughts on nicky, anon, in fact I love you for asking it. truly, it is the pinnacle of my achievement on tumblr to be asked about characterization out of the blue.
When I started this I was actually a little scared I would disappoint because the thing is that I think I am part of a quiet minority on tumblr that did not find the old guard to be a super great movie? Like it was a B-. I think it would have been better if a lot of the scenes were restructured and if some of the dialogue was just. Better. But I was real excited because there was so much good material in there that even if I didn’t think the movie optimized, the Fandom was going to go and be Amazing. Another reason I was so certain this fandom was going to be Amazing was we don’t know that much about the characters? There is so many blank spaces that we get to color in. Like, the only things we need to canonically know about Nicky is he was born before the crusades, he loves Joe, and he’s the idealistic one of the group. That’s basically it. People are going to do so many different things with that it’s going to be great. But also this is just my interpretation of Nicky, and that is going to coexist with so many other different Nicky’s! I’m excited. I assumed I would be a spectator but there is 1.3k of fic in a doc that says otherwise, anyway, without further preamble: Nicky. My first thoughts about Nicky are. Face handsome. I’m sure they’re Joe’s thoughts too. Something about his handsomely large nose and his kind eyes, from the first scene I was captivated. I could stare at him forever. My second thought is that he said “The love of my life was of the people I’ve been taught to hate” and I think that it is very likely when Niccolo met Yusuf, he thought he hated him. He had been taught he was supposed to hate him. I think it is entirely possible that the Nicky we see in canon, who is peaceful and forgiving and kind, does not at all resemble the man that Yusuf first met. (I think there’s this understandable tendency to fandom to try and keep characters as recognizable and the same even through times very different and removed from canon, and even when canon establishes that they used to be very different. I have thoughts about head of the class teacher’s pet Baze Malbus that are a separate issue I will not go into here) I think Niccolo meets Yusuf and hates him and kills him. I think Niccolo comes to Yusuf’s homeland full of a learned hate and thinks his purpose in life is to kill and be a conqueror. I think the man of Niccolo’s dreams is the first person Niccolo ever kills. And then that man doesn’t die. And that must be such a terrifying relief, to not have to live with having killed someone. To not have to be alone. To not have the mysterious dreams, the only magic or blessing you have known, to be for the purpose of killing someone. I think of Nicky saying “You know how it was, to be completely alone.” And how neither Joe nor Nicky mention outliving a family, and how maybe that’s not because they’re older and they’re over their grief. I think about how Niccolo was a gay man, a sodomite, waging a holy war. I think there are a lot of reasons Niccolo woke up from his first death alone. I think Booker’s right. Nicky’s immortality was a gift. Maybe because he never had anybody to outlive. Definitely because if it weren’t for his renewed life, he would never have fallen in love with Joe. He would have never unlearned that hate. His life would have been him killing a man and then died trying to kill another. He would have never known that the god that he’s fighting for that is also maybe supposed to hate him can’t coincide with reality, because the reality is that Nicky cannot die and go to hell. Nicky lives and gets to love. And I think with that life and love he decides to let go of his hate and anger to be kind and forgiving. It’s why he forgives Booker. Because once upon a time, Nicky got to live a learn what his mistakes were and not everybody gets to. But Nicky will always think that everybody deserves to, everybody should. Eventually, of course, they realize the rules of their new life and it becomes a game. In a midst of a war, of death and despair, two men learn that they cannot kill each other. That they cannot hurt each other in anyway that matters. In the war these men are blessed and cursed to be safe. I also think of Nicky and Joe, and how Nicky sees himself as differently from Joe. Like, I’m no history buff but I’m pretty sure Yusuf was not on the side of the aggressors. He was trying to protect his people, and he’s never stopped. Meanwhile Nicky is asked “are you the good guys” and says “We fight for what we think is right.” Nicky, blind with hate becoming a sniper. Someone who sees protects his team by seeing the whole field. Joe is also the creative one of the couple? Like, did he go from being an artists to being torn away to be a soldier, or did he think his purpose was fighting and protecting and then branch out? Either way, we know Joe thinks of Nicky as the kind one, but Joe paints and writes poetry and makes things and I think Nicky will always be a little in awe of that.

Nicky was far from arrogant. In fact, he had grown a lot and left behind any notions of him knowing everything or being better than anyone. However, he was confident in one aspect: he knew that he could be a good lover. Partially because he wanted to be a good one and partially because he was willing to adapt to become one. These things came naturally to him especially in regards to someone he loved. He wanted to support them. He wanted to be there for them. He wasn’t in it because he got nothing in return. Yes, it was a fucking blessing to be cared for in return and that mutual reciprocation kept him from heartbreak… ❝ I am not perfect. ❞ He smiles because there was a lot more he still could work on. He wonders if they had met many years ago how things would have gone. He couldn’t imagine the bigoted version of his younger self being able to accept this sort of relationship when ‘god’ had blinded him so. Perhaps that is why he is understanding now with them. His hands move to close over theirs on his face and he shakes his head some, ❝ You don’t need to apologize. I just want you to know I am always going to be here for you. As long as you want me. As long as you let me. ❞
Hyacinthe was shaking into his arms. They could hardly fathom how much Nicky could love them, to the point he almost did not care about their past and knew he would love them anyway. But how could he be sure? How could he know that his love for them would be so deep that he would be able to disregard all of it? As much as they did not know all the details of his past, they knew that Nicky was the love of their life. It was him. It had always been him. No one else.
Allow yourself to have me. He was right. They wanted him. They nodded. Slowly. Then looked up at the man. They could not smile. Not just yet. But they could cup his cheeks and press a soft, tender kiss to his lips. "Thank you," they whispered, nuzzling their foreheads. "Thank you. Thank you... I'm sorry I tried to leave, I-I'm so glad you stopped me." They did not know what had come over them. Probably panicked. Wanted to end it all before Nicky could realize what a mess they really were. How could they have one second doubted him? "I want you. I... I have you...?" They could not help but sound like they were still asking for permission. At least, it was a good start. "You're so perfect... I don't deserve you. But you're my Nicky..." They were whispering, refusing to move away from his comforting arms, thumbs stroking his cheeks gently.

More TOG-adjacent movie reviews!!!! Bc I can’t believe how this reignited old flames in me!!!!
The Mouth of the Wolf (La bocca del lupo)
From the Pietro Marcello retrospective at Film at Lincoln Center
My rating: 4.5/5
A film set in Genova! Gosh, this is the kind of film that REMINDS me how much I wanted to be this kind of auteur. European Arthouse at its finest! Gosh darn I was such a pretentious wannabe nerd as a kid. Now I’m just a 30+ year old hag who happened on this film thanks to the hardly credulous connection of Netflix’s The Old Guard > Luca Marinelli > Martin Eden > Pietro Marcello > La bocca del lupo
Pietro Marcello is known for his documentary style. Think of the film as basically a reel of documentary shots of the port city of Genova. Narrow winding alleys, the destitute living under bridges, the industrial banality of container trucks and train tracks. A man visits a church, kids play in crumbling streets. There is a narrative that ties the whole film, on a man out of prison and his trans lover who waited a long time for him to finish his prison sentence.
Shot on 16mm film, the film is evocative of a sense of history that sometimes burdens a place. I find that this is the sort of feeling I often get in non-touristy European towns. Genova, an aging city, with residents who’ve seen everything. Idk what your tolerance for this genre of film is, because there is not a lot of dialogue or plot in this genre, but I found it wholly compelling (and wisely wrapped with a runtime of just an hour). There is modern footage, and there is archival footage. It is very much for the Vibes, and the Vibes I absorbed. Especially in these COVID times of closed borders, I quite enjoy the transportative, meditative effect of these films.
TY Nicolò di Genova for compelling me to watch this film about Genova. It is quite nice to know I still have the patience for these films, and that some secret part of me still longs to make films like that, with lingering shots of a city in the night and day, turning the eye onto what would normally have been passed over for being too ordinary. And a word about the visual effects of the expired 16mm film stock--bellissimo! Film shines best when used to capture the color temperatures of what our eyes read as ordinary--fluorescent light shows up as green/blue, incandescent light shows up as very warm oranges. There are neon purples and blues that glow with an intensity only filmstock can capture too--I see why Pietro Marcello is enamoured with the format. Ahh, the incomparable dynamic range of color slide film!! Even the best digital sensors can’t achieve this yet (this is what technology is trying to improve on).
Ok now I miss film photography, something I haven’t done in years. Ah, my wasted youth! If I only didn’t give up on photography, but then I always remember that I left it bc it was just so ridiculously expensive. Now I have money (kids, this is why you wanna get to your 30s), but a graveyard of forgotten skills. Alas!

Nicky didn't want to disturb Cin. After all, they looked so serene and peaceful like that, Nicky's arms tightening around Hyacinthe. He could appreciate moments like this with his lover content and seemingly happy, leaning on him and falling asleep on him. Only a fool would complain about someone being comfortable enough to fall asleep on them. He smiles as his fingers gently brush the other's hair, twirling the ends of it with a small quiet hum.
However, he thought he had woken Cin when his hand hesitates, moving away some before returning at the other's request. "Okay, I won't then." He promises and leans forward to press a small kiss to the top of Cin's head as well, "You look so pretty sleeping-" Which could be an odd thing to say but Nicky meant it regardless, "You always look pretty but even more so when you don't have a problem in the world and just dozing off on me."
@godstrayed said: [ 𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐇 ] ― sender brushes receiver’s hair - nicky
A soft sigh left Hyacinthe's lips as their lashes gently brushed the high points of their cheeks. Their eyes started moving under their lids and finally, ever so slowly, opened. Lips parted as the queen slowly regained consciousness. Only then did they realize they had fallen asleep on Nicky's lap while they were watching a movie. Exhaustion had most likely taken a toll over them, after spending months and months sleeping for less than five hours.
But what made their heart flutter softly was the feeling of his fingers caressing their hair, massaging their scalp tenderly. They did not know what time it was but the TV being already off was enough to tell them it was much later than they expected. Yet, there was Nicky, patiently waiting for them to wake up. They groaned and slowly started getting up. "Sorry, I fell asleep," they whispered, their voice low and husky from sleep. When they felt his hand slip off their head, they grasped his wrist. "No..." Their eyes met as Hyacinthe looked up, so close they could feel his warm breath over their lips. "Don't stop. It feels super nice..."

hit the ♡ for a starter.
He's splattered with his own blood. Under normal circumstances, it would definitely be reason for concern. But Nicky isn't like other's. The bullet unlodges itself from the quickly healing wound and drops to the ground with a clatter. The skin that had been open and marred only seconds earlier now completely pristine, only remnants of the wound the drying blood. His eyes flicker up, half-sheepish and half surprised; towards the unknown person near him. "I'd explain but it's probably best we get out of here." / @dngerclose

The Works
The Unfolding Pavilion has invited the most unique members of the Little Italy network to create works capable of reacting to both Gino Valle’s building and the specific space occupied by the Pavilion.
The invited architects were asked to produce original objects/installations, that puts in dialogue their personal body of work to the Giudecca Social Housing - to one or more of its elements/spaces/representations, to the whole building, to the relation of the project with its urban surroundings, etc. - and so to use the Venetian condominium as a sort of tool to reflect on their own practice, just as the representations of Renaissance ideal cities served as tools to experiment with the new technique of perspective.

❛ i don't know how you do it. how are you able to stay so strong when everything around you is falling apart? ❜ / to nickyy
&. memes | always accepting.
There was no easy answer. At least, not one that might bring her immediate comfort. In truth, it had taken him a very long time to be able to handle everything immortality threw at them. There was always a weight to solve all the impending doom the rest of the world faced. How could they feed the hungry? How could they end wars? In what ways could they benefit medicine? It went on and on, unending on the sense of responsibility thrusted on them all.
"It is difficult," He admits. Chaos, death, and hurt. It only grew with intensity with year century that passed and humans grew more capable of horrors. Nicky and the others did what they could but they were not the natural state of things. They were an exception. Sometimes, you had to allow things to be in their natural order. People would die, war would happen, and things would hurt. They could only ease as much suffering as they could and help as many as their long lives would allow. It might never feel like enough but in reality, they were doing their best with the opportunity given to them.
"I had to learn to be satisfied with what is in my heart. I do my best to help everyone we come across whose struggles are in my power to help." There is a slight pause as Nicky's gaze drops as if remembering something quite far away, "I try to rectify my own mistakes and take every opportunity to grow. I spend a lot of time with those I love. You all are my family. I find my greatest source of strength is you all. So long as we have each other we can endure everything, anything, and always."

#Andy is Vimes tell me I’m wrong#meta#the old guard#discworld#nicolò di genova#granny weatherwax#it’s that very specific trick of having iron-clad views about right and wrong#but also compassion
Re: Andy=Vimes. I’m thinking about this and I’m not sure it quite fits, just because of the very different paths they take to cynicism and the influences around them.
Andy has never been an everyday sort of person and she seems like she’s very very rarely been a member of a larger community and those are both really intrinsic to Vimes’s ethical view. Yes, he’s frequently solitary, but it’s within the context of his city. He’s always very aware of himself as part of the workings on the world. Not working upon it, but within it.
They’re both cynical, yes. They’re tired and frequently angry and have a lot of internal dialogue relating to “not these assholes again”. They definitely share some moral traits, but the system of ethics that they work under is, in canon, very different.
Andy is absolutely more utilitarian than Vimes. She will 10000% kill a person who she believes deserves it, while Vimes’s ethical code doesn’t allow for it unless given no other choice. He’ll live with inefficiency in the service of a higher cause in a way we really don’t see in Andy in the film. Would Andy say that “The ends justify the means”? I could see her doing so, in a way that I couldn’t see Vimes doing.
Galaxy-brain realisation: I think Nicky’s personal ethics and moral views are most similar, in terms of other fictional characters, to Granny Weatherwax from Discworld. Their personalities are obviously quite different, but their morals? More or less the same.

‘ you’re such a damn liar ’ (Nicolò, her old guard verse)
↪ memes / always accepting.
He raised an eyebrow in response to the accusation. He had spent centuries navigating the complexities of life, and lying was often a necessary skill in his line of work. But in this moment, he had no reason to hide the truth. Nicky leaned in slightly, his voice calm and steady as he replied, "Well, my friend, we all have our secrets and our reasons for keeping them. But in this instance, you've got it wrong. I assure you, I'm not lying." He had no intention of deceiving anyone in this particular situation.

i thought you went to bed an hour ago. @ Nicky
&. memes | always accepting.
His smile was soft, red-rimmed eyes underneath his glasses and clouded by sleepiness. Nicky had intended on going to bed—he really had, but he didn't have a few things done for work. On top of that sometimes it was hard to fall asleep or if he did manage to, he'd somehow wake up a few hours later wide awake. He sat hunched over his computer, bundled in a soft sweater he wasn't sure if was his or Cin's, and tea steaming in a cup next to his mouse. "I wasn't really paying attention to the time." He said as he blinked past the haziness in his vision, "I couldn't really sleep anyways. So I figured why not do something productive with my time?" He says with a sheepish smile and moved back in his chair, patting his lap for the other to join him. "Come, amore mio. I am sure you can lullaby me to sleep."

Nicky adores them. Nicky only has positive things to consider when it comes to Cin. They're lovely on the outside, of course! But Nicky really likes how sweet and kind Cin is towards him. Even in their interactions when it's tense or Cin questioning, Nicky finds something about them so sweet. He gets sad in regards to their self-esteem and not thinking they are worthy. He wants to prove and display through his feelings that Cin is, in fact, worthy but he also is aware that only they can make that change. Nicky is in love and loves being in love with her.

Trust was an elusive thing. Outsiders had never been a thing in the very long time Nicky has existed. It was a matter of self-preservation for the most part. But these circumstances were different. Not totally like them but enough in the ways that mattered ── it's enough for him to consider doing things differently as well.
"It's hard to know where your... inclinations might lay." Nicky says after a moment, "Whether or not you are interested in the common good or just yourself." How many times had they fallen victim to someone's selfishness or greed? Even betrayed by his friend for the same reasoning. "Perhaps I am late but I am here now offering friendship. It's lonely when you do not die."
@godstrayed | Nicolo said ❛ all this time i was wasting , hoping you’d come around . ❜
Barty blinks at Nicolo.
They've hardly been unaware of each other this whole time. It's hard to miss someone else who didn't stay dead, even if Barty wasn't part of their little group, but something else entirely. He hadn't been there, at the beginning, or any skirmish afterwards - too much of a coward to get involved in any conflict.
Nor does he want to make an enemy of Nicolo.
"You knew where I was." Or had been, for the last 500 years, at least. Not exactly accusation, or excuse, but something else. "You'd have been welcome."
