But how would the others (fam and dimensional) react to discovering this particular baby is the reincarnation of the demon that was really close to destroying the world and remaking it in her image? Like, the double take has to be legendary.

Oh it was def Huntsman who made the "beer belly" comment. He has no filter. SWK was the one who punched him, cus of shared hormones with Mac. Then the other spiders smack Huntsy on the back of the head for good measure. Sandy has to physically lift his mans out of there before they try returning him to Diyu with the receipt. Huntsman apologized via hand-woven silk baby blankets.

Whilst the parents knew from the beginning that LBD has reincarnated into their daughter (they were there obs), most of the fam hear about "Yuebei = Reincarnated LBD" from gossip or hearsay. Also the Mayor equally has no filter - he walks straight up to Macaque with an armful of baby shower gifts and waves at his stomach like; "Hello, my lady! Enjoying your new accommodations?". The friends and fam present are like "Lol what?" and SWK and Mac just decide to spill the beans.

The adults are initally freaked out ("So are we talking... fresh slate? Or is she gonna come out with the creepy whispering and bone mechs?"), but once it becomes clear that Yuebei won't have the memories or mind of her previous incarnation, the adults all sigh and just chalk it up to weird reincarnation nonsense. Pigsy expresses how he feels sorry for the kid, as he too reincarnated from a jerk (Zhu Bajie).

The kids freak out a little more. You know already how badly MK and Bai He takes the situation. Nezha ends up being the voice of reason; pointing out tha he himself is a demonic reincarnation and he can't remember squat about who his soul used to inhabit. It takes the kids a lot longer to be cool with the "Baby sister might be the Devil" situation.

As for the Wukongverse? It's a mixed bag. Under read more for spoilers

LMK Shadowpeach: *explaining what happened when they went to Diyu to sort out unrelated undead stuff* LMK!Mac: "So yeah, our unborn daughter is the reincarnation of the Bone Demon that tried to destroy all of the Mortal Realm and remake it in her image." Either way it's gonna be hard for her to be a villain when she can't even stay awake for more that two hours." hahahaha hello! i think i can maybe rec you some stuff with similar flavor -- i actually didnt find tteotm to be that slutty so much as extremely sexually repressed and willing to commit crimes about it lmfao

the story of kunning palace's male lead has "worked up and gonna make it everyone's problem" UST with the FL. bonus in that FL is bai lu here too! note though that it's less romance focused than tteotm

love and redemption has a "worked up and gonna aesthetically suffer for it" ust with the FL

love between fairy and devil has some obvious parallels. lol i've described tteotm to be the angrier cousin of this drama and i think that fits

love is sweet has the same leads and there's a weird amount of parallel scenes between the two dramas??? works as a fluffier modern reincarnation au of tteotm. i did drop this one because the side couple + workplace plots were so boring to me, but worth giving it an ep or two to see if you're feeling it

a familiar stranger is crack crack CRACK but it's so fun

also not the same energy, but i am going to recommend a journey to love as well because there's some excellent chemistry between the leads in that one

Story of Kunning Palace is everything I shouldn't like and I love it

I picked up Story of Kunning Palace rather spontaneously, something to watch when I couldn't sleep, something to replace the run of really awful xianxias I keep quitting after a couple episodes. I went in knowing nothing about SoKP.

I was not prepared.

Oh, I said to myself, Zhang Linghe is in this. Fun!

Well my friends, while you should watch this because it's excellent, you should also brace yourselves. I did not expect to be utterly obsessed with this show and binge it all in like a week. Like literally I never do that. But the plot is interesting. It's beautifully shot. The cast is quite excellent. And the chemistry is off the charts.

Bai Lu is fantastic in this. She takes a complex roles and nails while giving the character an undercurrent of vulnerability that should win anyone over. She has sizzling chemistry with everyone she encounters, including one character who is the human equivalent of cream of wheat, and with the princess which is utterly delightful.

But Zhang Linghe. Whew, let me sit down and fan myself for a second. This is not the man who deftly played both Changheng and Xiao Run in Love Between Fairy and Devil. This is not the sweater-clad romantic his Studio seems to want to portray him as. This is... something else. Let me start with the caveat that I rarely go for the villain. I especially do not go for the villains who do not seem redeemable. And here in SoKP his character, Xie Wei, does not initially appear to be redeemable. He is a red flag a mile wide. He is a calculated mask of refinement over seething rage that always seems on the verge of breaking through. He appears capable of real violence. He sneers. He threatens. He's possessive and jealous to a disturbing degree. He generally looks disgusted with the world around him. And it is sexy as fuck. Why I am so in to this character? I can barely explain it beyond good acting and good storytelling. He is an utterly unhinged character, a veneer of civility over a feral creature ready to kill you at the slightest provocation, at least until you penetrate his armor. And then whew. You're in for quite a bumpy ride from beginning to end with his character, but so worth it for some incredible character development.

This is a reincarnation story of sorts, though slightly muddled since Chinese censorship won't allow those stories. It opens on the Empress, Jiang Xuening (Bai Lu) narrating her rise to power by any means necessary only to fall when rebels over take the palace. We see a lot of cruelty and violence and then rather than dying the Empress wakes up in the past with all her memories intact.

In this new life Jiang Xuening does everything she can to change events from the future she remembers, but ends up in the thick of it anyway. Along the way she collects an incredible cast of characters who all seem to fall in love with her (as you will too) and a long list of enemies so vile you will find yourself shouting at the screen for our heroes to just poison these assholes already.

It is especially interesting that here many of the side characters are the kind of good and honorable heroes, with excellent fighting skills or noble birth, that you often find at the center of these stories. Our secondary characters are sunshine, sweetness, and upright morality. But our leads are intensely morally grey, rely only on their wits, and are so packed full of trauma it's amazing they can function at all. And yet the story manages to wring some incredible depictions of friendship and loyalty out of this morally dubious center and make a story so irresistible that I lost sleep to watching several nights in a row.

In fairness some of that was because I just sort desperately needed more of Xie Wei the walking red flag, because whew he was so compelling. But it is truly a good and intricate story so full of twists that the constant surprise makes it even more satisfying. Highly recommend. But don't go into it looking for a sweet love story, it's a violent palace intrigue story with a side of very morally dubious and toxic romance with a smattering of consent issues, but weirdly, maybe even better for that? (And if you have a choking kink, this show will reward you!😅)

(And I'm not much one for celebrity gossip, but I will say that Zhang Linghe and Bail Lu gazing at each other in promo appearances for this has real 'get you someone who looks at you like Wang Yibo looks Xiao Zhan' vibes. Their on screen chemistry is searing, but it seems to have somehow carried over to or from real life because these people seem to very much, uh, admire each other.

2023 Drama Round-Up!

I know no one asked for this, but I figured I’d post what I’ve watched this year and how I rank them in case anyone is looking for recommendations! I saw @dangermousie did this and stole this idea (hope that’s ok!)

14. Heartbeat: It was…fine? Didn’t really leave me with any lasting impression. Was hoping for more from a drama about a vampire. I need a good vampire drama. This wasn’t it.

13. Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo - So much potential, didn’t live up to the hype. Give me those BATB vibes any day normally, but in this case the FML was too Mary Sue for me.

12. Back from the Brink- Fun! Good side characters! ML bored me to tears. FML carried the drama. Will keep an eye out for her.

11. Moon in the Day: A solid story. Nice and neat. Definitely would watch the ML in other things. I’m always here for a reincarnation storyline.

10. My Journey to You - Esther Yu! Zhang Linghe! Other awesome characters! Vibes! Otherwise just OK, I wasn’t super invested in the story. Would watch a second season if they deign to make one.

9. The King: Eternal Monarch - Another one that had great potential and I ended up somewhat disappointed. The concept was fantastic. I really love a modern day story with a modern monarch who’s beloved. I’m a big fan of the two main actors so that bumped it up the list. Unfortunately their chemistry was only so-so.

8. Tale of the Nine Tailed S1 - LEE YEON AND LEE RANG brother dynamic sobbbb

7. Doom at Your Service - Great leads with awesome chemistry! Sad! Story was simple and sweet.

6. Love is Sweet - OG Bai Lu/Luo Yunxi couple!! I loved them so much, I’m def watching this show again and again. Couldn’t stand the second couple, though, I skipped all of their scenes.

5. Alchemy of Souls S1 - This show has such a phenomenal concept, and a really well flushed out universe. The side characters are all great and three dimensional. I love the magic too. It’s lower on the list just because I’m not as emotionally connected to the leads as I am to those in other shows, but I really love this show.

4. Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 - This show has it all: magic, romance, historical setting, fashion, time travel, politics, humor. As much as I love LDW/Lee Yeon, the show was really an ensemble triumph. The story, the action, the humor, everything was top notch. Excelled in surpassing the first season in quality which seems so unlikely but they really did it.

TIED FOR SECOND

Til The End of the Moon - What can I say about this show? It’s wump central. It’s serving misunderstanding trope but make it completely overdone and unbearable. The fake blood budget alone could have paid all of the actors’ salaries. The female lead got shafted in favor of the male lead.

And yet…

You’ll think about this show every day for the rest of your life. I know I do.

(Also credited for the beginning of my obsession with Luo Yunxi. He’s babygirl. Tantai Jin is the best character ever written.)

Goblin - Oh man, this show. THIS SHOW. Despite some controversy over the age difference between the main couple, i love them. I grew up on vampire romance, nothing can sway me there. I really bought into their romance and I was devastated when they went through it. I cried more in this show than I have in any other. I also completely loved and was invested in the second couple, which almost NEVER happens.

Despite the romance of the two couples being stellar, it was the friendship and the found family that really sold it for me. The Goblin and the Grim Reaper have the best friendship and wildly fun chemistry onscreen. I couldn’t get enough of them. I watched the bts of them so many times over.

And my favorite for 2023…

1. Love Between Fairy and Devil - My first Asian drama. My first love. Noting will surpass this. No couple will touch Dongfang Qingcang and Xiao Lan Hua. I’ve rewatched it twice already. It’s the clear winner.

I’m currently watching My Demon and so far it’s rly good. Might break top ten.

Say your response to Acacia, but I didn't want to derail your post so I'm putting it here insterad; I have been convinced for a while now that Lucius isn't the final big bad of the story. It just doesn't make any sense if he is.

One, he's already been beaten. Yuno beat him. Magna and Luck beat him. Asta's almost definitely going to beat him. He's said that his clones are at the same level as him, so all they need to do is to get to the real body and it's game over for him.

Two, it doesn't fit with the pattern. Pretty much every. Single. Arc has gone "This is the big bad, wait, no, there's something else behind them!" we go into the elf reincarnation arc thinking that the big bad is Patri/Licht, turns out it's Zagred. We go into Spade thinking it's the Dark Triad, turns out it's Lucifero. Even the smaller arcs at the beginning of the series does this. We think they're going to Sosshi village to hunt boar and they have to deal with Heath Grice. We think they're going to the dungeon to find treasure and they have to deal with Lotus and Mars. We think they're going to Magic Knights HQ to report, then they have to deal with Rades and Valtos, and then Sally turns up. Nean is the worst offender with this. We think they're fighting Negie and Baro to rescue the kids (well, no, we initially thibk that they're just on vacation), then Sally turns up, then Patri/Licht and Valtos turn up, then the Third Eye turn up. I could go on, but I think you get the point. Every time we think they've met the big bad there's someone else.

So, yeah, I think we're only just entering the actual final arc too. And I want to know what the fuck is hiding behind (and likely manipulating) Lucius.

I mean, I agree with you. I do. Which is why I was surprised and gutted to "learn" about the 3-chapters-left-only rumour, because it didn't make sense. (But I reasoned it to myself to be true, because it came to me from many sources and supposed that someone had just pulled the plug on BC)

I also want to know about the sun/dark sun symbol on Lucius' forehead, because it's a different one from the Star (or ammonia) sign that Julius had prior to and during the Elf Arc (which makes it funny that he devised the Star Festival and system to reward the knights). And we saw that Star crumble when Julius was dying, and had to essentially be "reborn". Only to have the Sun-ish, symbol on him in the flashbacks. (Also Loid, with the Sun Affinity, being dead/missing, while the Moon affinity holder being alive, left me wondering. Ofc it could be just a coincidence; or my memory playing tricks on me)

I'm still convinced that the star (or ammonia) symbol on Julius was some kind of a magic seal that kept some things at bay, but whether it's memories or Lucius or something else, is up for debate.

Also, your thoughts are making me think that whatever the fuck it is that's manipulating Lucius, is something we haven't seen yet. Because none of these Big Bads, had really been introduced yet. Not really anyways. Which would be... interesting, because we have... witches, elves, angels, demons and devils, all the citizens of the 4 suits, so... Unless Loid wants to Make Spade Great Again and has a side hustle of hypnotism, I don't think it's any of the humans either

WITH ITS MANY drumlin hills the gorse-glad Machars peninsula of Galloway has a gentle, timeless beauty; and for me Lord Cockburn was winding readers up when he rated the Solway ‘the stupidest of all firths’ with few rocks, no islands and ‘no edging of picturesque mountains’. He wrote: ‘For to point, as the natives always do, to the dim ghosts of some distant hills, of which only the outlines are visible, and to explain with an air of triumph, these are the English mountains, is mere stuff.’

A reincarnated Cockburn should chum me up Windy Hill to get some sense into him. Okay, at less than 100 yards high it’s a hillock, but, although the views of the Cumbrian peaks and those of the Isle of Man are not to be sniffed at, there is undoubtedly magical scenery to behold north of the border. From the summit of this hill that has Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town, below it, your payback is an expansive swathe of hills; and the copses, coves, cliffs, bays, lochs, standing stones, forts, cairns, and tumbledown ruins, of these firth lands. You can take in the bay’s nature reserve and, if you are lucky, spot an osprey. In 2004 the first pair in a century visited Galloway and liked it. Wigtown now has CCTV cameras linked to an osprey’s nest.

Wigtownshire was Covenanting country during the ‘Killing Times’. Covenanters were either freedom-fighters battling against absolute rule by bishops, or theocrats worthy of the Taliban, who wanted a fundamentalist Scotland. You could argue either case, if you had the time and inclination. An obelisk on a lower contour of Windy Hill remembers two covenanting martyrs, Margaret Maclaughlan and Margaret Wilson, who were tied to stakes in Wigtown Bay on May 11th, 1685, and drowned as the tide advanced. A commission had condemned them as Presbyterian activists, and a pardon, issued in Edinburgh on April 30th, was ignored.

According to the records of the parish of Kirkinner, MacLaughlan’s head was ‘held down within the water by one of the town officers by his halberd at her throat, til she died’. Storytellers say he had an unquenchable thirst for the rest of his life. In History of the Hereditary Sheriffs of Galloway (1864), Sir Andrew Agnew, stated:

‘If going on an errand his unnatural craving obliged him to carry a huge pitcher on his back; if he crossed a stream, even before ribald companions he was irresistibly compelled to kneel down and, like the men chosen by Gideon, to lap water like a dog.’

Karma may also have dealt with the constable, Bell, who had tied the victims to the stakes. He had three sons born with webbed feet. Agnew observed:

‘We have a female relative, aged 92 years, who assures us that she has seen three of Cleppie Bell’s descendants in the district, who were all afflicted with this deformity of the fingers and toes.’

Provost Coltrane, who had been a ‘witch tester’, and was chief magistrate at the execution, was commonly said to have sold his soul to the devil. According to J Maxwell Wood in Witchcraft and Superstitious Record in the Southwestern District of Scotland, when he died in 1708, the windows of his house looked as if they were on fire, and for long afterwards his ghost, a terrifying figure, walked the earth, snorting fire from its nostrils. Even the house where he lived and died was for many years avoided after nightfall. When kirk sessions put adulterers in neck manacles and sackcloth, publicly humiliated Sabbath-breakers, and hanged petty thieves, it was a fitting end to a Holy Willie who had lurked on the streets looking for drinkers to punish.

The Machars has a myriad of antiquities: cup and ring markings, old homesteads, and standing stones. Three miles west of Wigtown on a bank of the river Bladnoch stands Torhouse, the reputed burial place of the mysterious king Calgacus, who fought against the Roman invasion and is mentioned in Tacitus’s Agricola. It is one of the best-preserved stone circles in Scotland.

Down the eastern flank of the Machars sits Garlieston which, because of its similarity to Normandy, was the location of the top-secret Mulberry Harbour project that prepared troops for D-Day. Secluded Cruggleton Bay, one of the most pleasing beaches along the Solway, is a sheltered arc of sand fringed by mature trees, a short stroll from Galloway House, the ancient seat of the earls of Galloway. To the south on an outcrop of shale are the crumbling remains of Cruggleton Castle, known by locals as the Arch or the Black Rock of Cree. An arch is all that is left of an English garrison from the time of Robert the Bruce.

Ninian built Scotland’s first recorded church, Candida Casa, at Whithorn around 400 AD, and spread Christianity across Scotland. He was described by Blaeu’s Atlas in 1662 as ‘A tutelary god in the furthest corner of Galloway, whither of old men from distant parts undertook pilgrimages, for the sake of religion, to see the relics & church of Ninian, and to carry away a portion of sacred dust, which was in these days considered a signal evidence of sanctity.’

James IV made several pilgrimages to the cradle of Christianity after his queen recuperated from ill health following a visit to the shrine. I thought my haversack was heavy, but the royal couple didn’t travel light. In Wigtown and Whithorn Historical and Descriptive Sketches (1877) Gordon Fraser stated: ‘It would appear that in this journey the queen travelled in a litter, sometimes called in the treasurers’ books the “Quenis chariot.” Seventeen horses were required to carry her majesty’s wardrobe and baggage.’

According to the eighth-century Miracula Nynie Episcopi, Ninian ‘studied heavenly wisdom with a devoted mind in a cave of horrible blackness’. There is a stimulating cliff-top walk to this much-visited cave from Whithorn’s neighbour, the Isle of Whithorn, which is not an island, but an old fishing port on a headland near to which cruel Coltrane had a farm. Seven crosses are cut into the face on its west side. Eighteen stone memorials and crosses that were found there are now in the museum at Whithorn Priory.

The finale of the 1972 cult film, The Wicker Man, was shot here and at the dramatic Burrow Head, where Sergeant Howie, played by Edward Woodward, was burned at the stake within an enormous wooden structure, as the pagan villagers danced and chanted. The remains of the wickerman’s legs were visible for many years but were eventually moved.

John Kincaid McNeillie, who was brought up in the Machars, left a legacy of more than 40 books, including a number of cult classics, such as The Wigtown Ploughman, which follows the life of Andy Walker, the son of an abusive father. It was an exposé of the appalling living conditions of Scotland’s rural poor under ruthless landlords in Scotland in the 1930s. McNeillie also turned out weekly nature journalism in Country Life. One wonders what he would have made of one Dale Maclauchlan, a roofer, who shelled out £5,500 in 2021 for a jetski to meet his girlfriend in the Isle of Man in contravention of COVID lockdown regulations. Maclaughlan set off from the Isle of Whithorn on a 27-mile trip to Ramsey. The media called him ‘the jetski Romeo’ but the courts weren’t impressed: he was jailed for four weeks. He recalled: ‘One minute I was staring at the sky going up a six-foot wave and the next I was staring down into the abyss. The water was black and was getting in my eyes and mouth. But the thought of Jessica kept me driving on.’

Due west is another cave that was once inhabited, along from startling sand dunes at St Medan’s beach, from where the views across Luce Bay to the Mull of Galloway are superb. We stand now on a ‘go stargazing’ site, chosen for its pristine, open dark skies.

‘Och, I wish I was back in ma ain wee cave’, Johnny Logie told the Sunday Post in April 1958 when he was in hospital with pneumonia. Logie, a former Ayrshire miner with hearing and sight problems from a pit fall, had lived in Sheep Cave for 30 years, gathering all the furniture he needed from driftwood, and collecting rainwater. He practised his own version of the good life, was renowned for his seaweed-fed vegetables, and was virtually self-sufficient. He died in 1962, although there were signs a few years ago that his cave was often visited: stacked kindling, an upturned drum with a candle on top, a bed made from pallets, and fish crates for seats.

The naturalist and writer Gavin Maxwell, who is famous for Ring of Bright Water, was also a seeker of solitude but was no cave-dweller. He was born near Port William; his mother was a daughter of the Duke of Northumberland, and his father was heir to the Galloway baronetcy. A life-size bronze otter sits on top of a rock overlooking Luce Bay as a memorial to Maxwell, whose blue-blooded forebears founded the village of Port William, but don’t get so laid-back by the tranquillity that you chat to the man who forever leans against a wooden fence looking out to sea. He won’t reply: he’s another statue cast in bronze. In front of him there is a plaque with the first verse of the poem Leisure by W. H. Davies:

‘What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare?’

Twelfth-century Glenluce Abbey is worthy of stares: it stands in magnificent disrepair in the north-west of the Machars, surrounded by pastureland and lapped by the meandering River Luce. There is a peculiar theory published in MacTaggart’s Gallovidian Encyclopedia that one of the abbey’s vaults (evidently long-buried) contained the library of Michael Scot, the wizard:

‘Here are thousands of old witch songs and incantations, books of the ‘Black Art,’ and ‘Necromancy,’ ‘Philosophy of the Devil,’ ‘Satan’s Almanacks,’ ‘The Fire Spangs of Faustus,’ ‘The Soothsayers’ Creed,’ ‘The Witch Chronicle,’ and the ‘Black Clud’s Wyme laid open,’ with many more valuable volumes.’

In the 16th century Gilbert Kennedy paid a monk to forge a signature on the title documents of Glenluce Abbey, then paid an assassin to murder the monk. He duly hanged the assassin for the murder.

The abbey stands on the banks of the Water Luce. In 1836 Sir James Hay of Park formed an islet in the river just before it reaches the sea.

When his son, Captain, later Admiral, Dalrymple Hay returned from visiting St. Helena, he named the island Helena and planted willows from cuttings of the tree at Napoleon’s grave. The willows are still there.

A NOTE FROM DOCTOR CHERBRONKLY

During the summer of 2015, a wave of hospitalizations in the Berkeley-Oakland area suggested the development of a rare psychological phenomenon: a mass formation psychosis centered around a supposed messianic figure.

One patient, 56M, described a “blue angel” who wrote the word of God into a book using only his mind. The patient was referred to my inpatient unit by Dr. Antoine Lini, who noted a “preoccupation with religious themes” related to sites visited by this supposed angel in the Berkeley Area. Specifically, he believed this man had opened up a portal next to a tree on Telegraph Avenue, which he referred to as “the rib.”

Another of Lini’s patients, 67M, claimed to have met “the devil” at a guesthouse near the UC Berkeley Campus, and that he had changed the color of Sather Tower from green to silver using some form of magic. The patient believed this man to be a false reincarnation of Philip K. Dick and told doctors to “not believe a word he says” and to “not look at the maze he left in the closet.” He insisted that this demon’s name was Praetor.

A group of patients in a long-term unit at Herrick Hospital spoke of being “rescued from another world” by a man with deep-set blue eyes, brown hair, and a beard. He was described as competent artist (working in crayon), a smooth talker, and a shit poker player. When asked to elaborate how, exactly, he had saved them from this “underworld” they said it had something to do with a wristwatch, but that it was too painful to talk about further.

What do these cases have in common? They all mentioned the same, and quite unusual, name: Praetor Loos. You may already be familiar with this name from the now ubiquitous graffiti trend sweeping the Bay Area: the so-called “Praetorian guard” and their vandalism of government offices, streetcars, and even private residences with the apparently meaningless question: “Who is Praetor Loos?”

No such person seems to exist, nor have they existed at any point in time. Praetor is simply not a name that people seem to be given, nor is it one that people tend to adopt. As such, we have been led to assume – until now – that this name was intended to evoke Roman law and military power; a vaguely intellectual way of questioning authority. Is it possible that the Praetor Loos mentioned by these vandals did, in fact, exist?

A vital clue to this puzzle was uncovered in 2019, as a sheaf of handwritten pages – now known widely as the Telegraph Avenue Codex -- was discovered behind a wall in Berkeley by a real estate company converting an old halfway house into premium student apartments. The workers thought it must have been written by a student so they left it there, stuffed into a blue plastic binder on one of the new residence’s many handsome shelving units. Later, it was discovered by student residents whilst stoned and became somewhat of a literary scandal. I was first made aware of this Codex after one of the students who discovered it was referred to my clinic after suffering chronic syncope for a period of five months. She claimed that a satellite called the Ruby Slipper was stalking her; after a brief course of anxiolytic therapy, she was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Type I, with Psychotic Features and sent happily on her way.

The identity of the author remained a mystery until just last year, when an envelope was delivered to the Cao Đài temple in Tây Ninh, Vietnam from Pakse, Laos. Inside was another envelope addressed to the New Yorker containing the signed manuscript “Becoming Praetor Loos: A Psychotic Narrative.” Vietnamese police interpreted it to be a suicide note and worked with Lao authorities to stage a manhunt in the Thousand Islands region, but no trace of the author was ever found. Praetor Loos, now finally unveiled in his authentic form, is presumed to have vanished into the jungle, like Jim Thompson before him, in search of the “other world” he wrote so curiously about.

love and redemption. girl meets boy. boy's part of a cursed theatre troupe and part of masochism tango of reincarnation with girl that lasts 10 life times. girl is actually kind of the god of war. crack, gender reversal, gender fuckery at large, feminist and queer friendly. incredible OST. just all-around one of my favorite dramas ever.

lost you forever (part 1). a xuanhuan vs. xianxia, but im not passionate enough about 5 xianxia for this list lol. another drama with gender fuckery. a fantastic FL and beautiful relationship building (and unbuilding) and character-driven story. dont even need the second part for this to be a favorite!!

love between fairy and devil. all those tropes you fucking loved when you were like 13 on ff.net given a lot of heart and near-perfect execution (aside from that ending). awesome characters, beautiful costumes and art direction. super addicting and bingeable

the legends. bai lu playing a powerhungry demoness and acquiring a dysfunctional harem in the process. xu kai looking like a sad blue-haired puppy. a monk that creates an entire demon because he has 1 boner. sismance. i had a lot of fun with this one and pointedly did not watch the last 5 or so eps lol

till the end of the moon. there's parts i genuinely hate and would not watch ever again. there's parts that are fucking incredible. sort of like the main couple, i have a love/hate relationship with this drama but when it hits it really hits

honorable mention: eternal love/10 miles of peach blossoms (xianxia fuckery at its finest weighed down somewhat by tedious side plots and one of the most infuriating 2nd FLs of all time)

gaksital/bridal mask. set in the 1930s. inverse character arcs between the hero and villain. dysfunctional romance amped up to the nth level. high stakes, high consequences, and a cast full of well-developed and written characters. bring tissues

empress ki. girl crushing and girl bossing her way through two kingdoms, one of the best FLs of all time. with her is a besotted baby enemy emperor and a Noble Good besotted powerless king as she goes from slave to smuggler to concubine to empress. chef's kiss

the princess' man. you want feral wrecks for your male leads? female leads ready to throw down in a parking lot? if you like lovers to enemy (?) lovers and star-crossed romances this one is a must

the king loves. this one's also on my underrated list. the first 4ish eps are a chore, but if you get past them you have the love triangle to end all love triangles, interesting palace politics with a fascinating "evil" empress, and im siwan getting to go a lil unhinged as a treat. it's the definition of an idol drama but gd did i love this and i binged the hell out of it no regrets

mr sunshine. le cinema!!! an interesting time in history (1870s-1880s) with a wide range of flawed but compelling characters centered around one of the most badass FLs of all time. winner of the #1 second lead syndrome contest for me with dong mae. only downfall to this one is i felt negative chemistry with the endgame ship but the show is good enough without it

honorable mention: chicago typewriter isnt on this list because it's only kind of half a historical drama BUT OMG WATCH IT. it's in my top 3 kdrama and while it has a slow build once it kicks off it fucking goes off

TOP FIVE UNDERRATED DRAMAS

the king loves as mentioned above. i think why it has a lower rating is the first handful of eps are kind of a snoozefest and there's a bit of an upset with the romance (which i was 900% for). but it's a fucking fun ride and full of awesome goryeo palace drama adventures

kairos. not underrated, since it has decent scores on reviewer sites, but underhyped? not enough people have seen this one and it's an incredible time-travel thriller that i found way more interesting than other popular dramas of its type like signal

cheese in the trap. the ending's a hot mess, but compared to how some 2020-onward dramas are ending it's poetry. a solid adaptation of a really great webtoon, awesome cinematography, and one of the few dramas ive seen that actually capture the campus/college life experience right

discovery of romance. the emotional cheating element causes a lot of folks to hate it/jump ship, but i love this one (and gd BOTH the fl and ml emotionally cheat ftr he's not innocent in this hot mess). jung yumi + eric mun are one of my favorite kdrama duos and they kill it, and kim seulgi plays an incredible second female lead

when a man falls in love. man people HATED this one but i think it's a blast when you're in the mood for mess + gangsters. if you're into watching fucked up romances with severe power imbalances and the dysfunction that follows, this one's for you. it's not perfect but definitely not deserving of its 6.8 MDL rating (gd!)

A Piece of Fripp's Writing Describing from the Earliest Days of Jorvik's Existence

*Author's Note*: This is a my fanmade Fripp 'jornal entry' as he describes his experiences in the early days of Jorvik. I figured this could count as a 'old scroll' or 'ancient testimony' of sorts. Parts of it do seem a bit rushed but I didn't want to make it overbearingly long. Enjoy!

My friend, my dearest friend.

It was long ago, so long that the sacred magical beasts still roamed these ancient lands. It was only us, me and her.

We arrived to this place, long before the beauty of life was painted across its dark, rocky canvas. For it was she who created the Life.

“I want to make a home here.”

Her words were promising, unyielding to opposition. Although I wasn’t assured as to how we were going to make this barren island suitable for the creation of a dwelling, I trusted her. She possessed power beyond that comprehensible to any mind.

Together, she and her handsome white pegasus were the Bringers of Life. I tagged along atop that magnificent hooved creature, gazing in wonder as the bright light of Life spilled from her fingertips and flowed from the mane of that brilliant white horse. All that was good and fair and alive spilled onto the harsh rocky plains, seeping into the veins of a land that had been dormant for so long.

No, it was they who created those veins.

Yes, they, she and her horse, who summoned the trees to burst through the barren ground, the sound of the horse’s hooves seeming to me what called the cold rocks around to break and crumble, forming the rich soil that would soon support variants of botany and creatures.

Life, that is what they created.

Soon, after much work, the once desolate island was now unrecognizable. It was as if an artist had taken her brush and paints to a blank canvas, determined to leave the surface without a trace of its former white. And that is exactly what they had done.

As that damned old saying goes however, “All good things must come to an end.” I still remember that day as if it were only yesterday - the darkness, the shadows, that monster, her tears and screams as she watched what she had worked so hard to create crumble at the demon’s wrath.

The devil had truly come to play.

It was by my efforts and their sacrifice that the beast, Garnok, was finally contained. The darkness was banished, and life continued on throughout the island. It almost made me angry; how dare this beautiful life still forge on and thrive while it’s gracious Creators lay silent, having given their very souls so that the world may live on. This thought filled me with an unusual anger.

She warned me that the shadow would not stay away forever - that new souls, the reincarnations of her warriors, would rise up and, at the very least, keep the demon at bay. I would, of course, be the one entrusted with their training.

As I sit here, scratching away at this old scroll, I wonder, truly, if this young generation will be the last - if her foretold fifth warrior will be able to finish the great beast once and for all. It is a trivial thought, even I know that. I am yet again sentencing another young group to death; so it is, so it has always been since our Creators’ deaths.

This is all I can bear to write for now. I shall place this entry with the multitude of my soliloquys from over the many years.

This is the burden of leadership.

THE MUMMY - 1932 -

(In the film, an ancient Egyptian mummy named Imhotep is discovered by a team of archaeologists and inadvertently brought back to life through a magic scroll. Disguised as a modern Egyptian named Ardeth Bay, Imhotep searches for his lost love, who he believes has been reincarnated into a modern girl.)

"You seem to think this thing has all the devils of hell in it. Why not burn it and be done with it?"

"An excellent suggestion --"

"Death -- eternal punishment -- for -- anyone -- who -- opens -- this -- casket. In the name -- of Amon-Ra -- the king of the gods." Good heavens, what a terrible curse.”

"Well, let's see what's inside."

"I loved you once, but now you belong with the dead. I am Anck-es-en-Amon, but I -- I'm somebody else, too. I want to live, even in this strange new world."

"Stuck in the desert for two months, and was it hot. That tomb --”

"What tomb? "Surely you read about the princess?"

"So you did that."

"Yes. The fourteen steps down and the unbroken seals were thrilling. But when we came to handle all her clothes and her jewels and her toilet things; you know they buried everything with them that they used in life?; well, when we came to unwrap the girl herself --"

"How could you do that?"

"Had to. Science, you know. Well after we'd worked among her things, I felt as if I'd known her. But when we got the wrappings off, and I saw her face -- you'll think me silly, but I sort of fell in love with her."

"Do you have to open graves to find girls to fall in love with?"
