i’m just thinking about harriet doing her damnedest to be the best at whatever hook put in front of her. the best at sword fighting, the best at cartography, the best at astronomy, at mathematics, at literature. the best caretaker for her siblings, the best captain of her ship. she has a need, an innate desire to be the top at whatever she does, and will do whatever it takes to get there.
and she still loves learning, she wants to be fluent in all the languages she can be, to learn advanced mathematics, to have the knowledge to figure things out anywhere she goes.

❛ i know you. how else do you think i found you so easily? ( sammy @ harriet)
@belovedstars
it was a moment, a mere moment, of weakness. that was what harriet was telling herself. hiding in the closet of her quarters because she happened to hear a man on the docks yelling, a man who happened to sound like her father, was just an instinctive reaction.
she wasn’t actually scared.
so when sammy opens her closet door, face full of worry and sympathy, she doesn’t cry like a baby would.
and if he notices the tears that definitely weren’t spilling onto her cheeks, he says nothing of it, instead reaching a hand in to hold hers.
“how…?” the rest of the question goes unsaid.
“i know you.” he says it so matter of factly. he knows her, knows every inch of her mind, more than she does sometimes. “how else do you think i found you so easily?”
he knows her. knows she would have pretended to not be frightened. knows she was actually terrified out of her mind. and he found her.
sometimes, at least with him, to be known is to be loved.

some day i will write a headcanon post about my girls and their views of and how they deal with emotional labor. i think some, like anya, really embrace being that kind of catch all caretaker, but anya really struggles with letting herself be taken care of.
whereas harriet, while she doesn’t resent her siblings (much), definitely resents that she’s been forced to care for them from such a young age that literally even the smallest hint of a normal childhood was ripped from her.

thinking very specifically about harriet captaining the hangman’s daughter (which for the record is the coolest ship name i’ve ever come up with) and how she has mastered the art of yelling at her crew without saying a single word.

throwback to when i told cassidy @hookd that hooks inherently need an obsession and harriet’s was taking care of her siblings and that now they don’t need her as much (or at all) she has no idea what to do.
(her secondary obsession is being the Best)

FOLLOWING THIS UP
she wants to be the one people think of when they think of Captain Hook. not her father, but her. to surpass her father in notoriety would be an awfully big adventure, she thinks.
