Posting About Pokemon

I’m having some stream-of-consciousness thoughts about Pokemon and I think I’ll just go ahead and share them because, um... I want to type.  I guess.

The best thing about the Gen VI games is Pokemon-Amie.  I think being able to pet and play and feed the creatures makes it feel much closer to being friends, rather than pleasantly arranged dots on a screen.  Side note:  Umbreon, Lucario, and Manectric are grade-A petting Pokemon.

I didn’t used to nickname my Pokemon, but I do now.  Pokemon that I have no intention of using get goofy nicknames (with some exceptions for Pokemon that are funny in and of themselves, like Slowpoke and Psyduck), but my actual “team” get real names.  Right now, I’m going with a bands/music theme, because JoJo:

Gardevoir = C. Soul [Collective Soul]

Manectric = Elo [Electric Light Orchestra]

Umbreon = Raymaker [The Ray Makers, a little-known group formed by Lance Robertson before he became famous for Yo Gabba Gabba!]

Conkeldurr = Rammstein

Starmie = Tin Star

Alakazam = Paranoid [Black Sabbath track]

Greninja = Rush

Magnezone = Machinehead [Bush track]

A few exceptions exist, like my Lucario, Celine, because I thought that name was very pretty.

My favorite Pokemon design is Starmie; favorite to use, Conkeldurr; favorite starter, Squirtle; favorite mythical, Deoxys; favorite legendary group, the titans (my favorite of that being Registeel); favorite comedy Pokemon, Slowpoke.

My little brother used to invent goofy yet effective Pokemon builds.  The HATE CLAM, a Forretress with Stealth Rock, Spikes, Toxic/Toxic Spikes, and Explosion, has become something of an in-joke due to its hilarity and effectiveness.

I once switched a Regigigas in when an opponent in an online battle used Gastro Acid.  They quit immediately.  Oops!  I still try to pack him into teams even though he’s considered awful.

If you hold your stylus over the head of an Umbreon in Pokemon-Amie, they’ll eventually get frustrated and make odd grunts while reaching up with their front left paw.  I think this is a cute touch.

I still can’t imagine why small children get access to Pokemon when half of their descriptions read something like “can set fire to boulders with its flame breath” or “can throw the weight equivalent of 100 adult humans easily.”  I can only guess that the prevalence of villainous gangs across the Pokemon world has resulted in a populace that trains their children in the control and care of unstoppable-yet-cuddly hellbeasts from an early age.

There are a lot of Pokemon with humanoid appearances and apparently human intelligence, like Gardevoir and Lucario, the latter of which is capable of understanding and telepathically communicating in human language according to Super Smash Bros.  Having them fight each other is a bit disturbing, and having been near some of the stranger corners of the internet...  well, it’s best not to think about human-Pokemon relations on that level.

Though Regice and Regirock were almost certainly made to shape glaciers and mountains respectively, Registeel’s purpose doesn’t seem as obvious.  It is hollow.  Perhaps it serves as Regigigas’ personal ambulatory luggage and/or lunchbox?

I try to participate in Wonder Trade stuff, but I feel like the Pokemon I send out aren’t worth having.  They’re usually not-quite-rights from my breeding projects, uncommon or good Pokemon with at least 4-5 perfect IVs and cool egg moves, but I got a Klefki with a handful of cool moves and Pokerus and that just makes me feel inadequate.  Though I suppose it’s better than the endless tide of Zigzagoons and Wurmples I end up with all the time.

I really wish Game Freak would stop releasing slightly different Pikachus every generation and let Ken Sugimori design Pokemon that don’t have faces again.  Starmie and the titans are just cool as heck and we need more monstrous monsters.

Related, Junichi Masuda’s music always has been awesome and I’d like to hear some more Pulseman/Gen I Pokemon-type music in upcoming generations.  Loved how panicked and “this wasn’t supposed to happen” League Champion Blue’s theme was.  (He still got smooshed by a Blastoise with Ice Beam, though.)

Missingno. should be a valid Pokemon to transfer into Gen VII games.  Why else would you put the Gen I games on 3DS and let them transfer to Pokemon Bank?

Glitch Pokemon, in general, are interesting.  I’d recommend a read through Bulbapedia’s section on Gen 1 glitches and their entertaining bouts of random instability that the Game Boy dutifully soldiered through despite the bizarre instructions being passed to its poor little processor.

In closing, it mildly disturbs me that Conkeldurr’s favorite petting spot is its nose.  I swear, I think it might be some sort of murderclown.

So I ordered a purple Delta Rune shirt from Fangamer about a week ago and jokingly wrote in the “delivery instructions/haikus for the mailroom” blank something to the effect of “please ensure that item is not inexplicably replaced with a dog as this has happened to me several times before.”

The “Just Post” Initiative

I’ve decided that one of my major problems is that I just don’t do things like I should.  Not as in doing things wrong; as in, not doing them at all.

Being afraid of communication or action isn’t doing me any good; it’s kept me comfortably away from rejection and anxiety, but also away from opportunity and possibilities and contact and so many other amazing things.  The latter far outweighs the former in value.

I’ve determined that needs to come to an end.

So, for the foreseeable future, if I can’t come up with a valid, rational reason to not do something simple and harmless (for example, sending someone a message through here, or making a post about just posting), I’m going to do it.  Do it well, obviously, to the best of my ability, but no “this makes me anxious so I shouldn’t do it” or “maybe this person won’t like what I have to say” or anything like that.

Maybe I’ll get my insecurities proven absolutely correct and I’m sticking my arm in a wood chipper.  Or, maybe I’ll find out a bit about myself and discover what I thought was a wood chipper was actually a bag full of puppies.

Can’t find out just sitting here!

Yeah, this is one of those things that’s a FANTASTIC concept and I like the idea of not having to use Asks as a method of direct messaging people to say hello and strike up that conversation you’ve been procrastinating over or ask stupid questions (the former of which was my very first action as soon as I got the ability), but it’s also really REALLY easy to abuse right now from a harassment standpoint and there are no options to disable or limit IMs and also you can IM from side blogs which may or may not allow one to circumnavigate blocks (can’t test that right now, please do not spread this around as if it’s true).

Basically, great idea, but it came out of the idea toaster a little bit pale.  Also, I feel REALLY sorry for anyone who has been harassed or stalked in the past and suddenly has a brand new hole to patch up in the great sewer pipe that is the internet.

Inb4 shit happens can we all selectively agree not to pressure someone to answer you via the IM ie “i can see you reblogging stuff why are you ignoring me” especially if youre not actually friends and even if youre in a mutual

One of the big take-aways I got from Undertale was that “you don’t have to be friends with everyone, or like them, or even enjoy their presence, just don’t be a jerk and/or murderous towards them.”  A lot of monsters throughout the game are characters that I’m not fond of, but I don’t fault them for being vain or self-centered or... Jerry.  That’s what bothers me most about the reaction to So Sorry:  not only are people adverse to him in the game (which is, as I said, fine), but actively harass Sam over his inclusion over some perceived sullying of the final product, which is not fine.  It’s also sad, considering he spent 100 times the asking price of the game to make it a reality for everyone, including the people making a flap over a secret side boss cameo that was actively obscured in name and relation to his creator so as not to cause the reaction that it ended up resulting in anyways.

I can’t say I know all about Sam, but just looking at So Sorry, I can tell that it wasn’t a self-aggrandizement or an attempt to force himself into the role of anything other than a silly, goofy, anxious fellow.  Maybe I don’t necessarily like So Sorry, or everything that Sam does or enjoys myself, but that’s not a reason to heap vitriol on him, either.  The man contributed a great deal to making something you deeply enjoy, so much so that you’re reading this post in a little dusty corner of the internet probably after browsing through a stack of Undertale-related tags.

And Sam, you’re a cool dude for helping with something that I really love.  Thanks.

Undertale - So Sorry

Already posted much of this on the Steam forums today since questions have come up and a bunch of rumours have been quashed so I figured I’d say a few tings.

This is gonna be a bit essay-ish but I figured I should respond to some questions, concerns and rumours that are goin around. So, full disclosure on the parts I can actually confirm. If you want more, you’ll have to ask Toby and Tem - I don’t know exactly what they think of me and I’m supremely anxious anyway, haha. They’ve been very supportive and kind to me though and I think they’re great people. Anyway, here’s the way of it.

Firstly, So Sorry is the Fan Troll. I has originally backed to design a monster but I thought long and hard and said “Hey, I think Undertale is literally the best, I want to help out, I know its a joke tier but would you be cool with me backing it”. He said yes and was kind of surprised at the time. We started talking about stuff before the Kickstarter ended. It didn’t take long for him to find out who I was, I have an internet presence like a lot of folks, and we got talking about it. I didn’t want my weird, niche interests to have any effect on the game because I had no desire to tamper with the game or anything. That’d be weird. In any case, I do have interests outside of my more peculiar things and Undertale was real important to me. It made me feel things a game had not done for a very long time, if at all. So, Toby asked me if I’d be cool obscuring the connection since the character is a pre-existing thing. Part of its so the game feels like a self contained unit and give him control as a creator, which I totally get and I was fine with, and part of it was to avoid the issue of people seeing the name, googling it and giving me stick. Which happened anyway cos someone saw the battle in the discussions on /v/ I think and linked my gallery. Part of it is, obviously, so you can search for content of the game and not find my stuff. It isn’t shame, as far as I’m aware, to not want something unrelated associated wih you. Asking for major alterations to the character felt weird, its kind of a part of my identity, y'know? Like if someone asked me if my face could come with detached lobes or green eyes, I’d feel a little comprimised? When I expressed that kind of thing though, he seemed to understand. I thought a bunch about what I could make work that would keep it distinct but true to the character. The game was full of mom/dad jokes, so I suggested the joke name So Sorry (Hey Mr Sorry, can I call you So?) and he liked it. He also asked if he could remove the hat and I said sure, like, its just window dressing, y'know? A hat’s a hat, not my whole identity. He added it back in of his own accord and added in half a dozen in total I think - I’m not even sure if I’ve even seen all of em. I think my favourite is the party hat though, it always makes me laugh. Otherwise, Toby seemed fine with the character being as they are and I really like the interpretation he came up with. There’s a rumour going around that not only would I not accept any comprimise, I was rude to Toby for asking and I don’t know where that’s coming from. A lot of them seem to be based on me being a secret and Toby hating me but I’m fine with the secret thing and as far as I’m aware, Toby doesn’t think ill of me. You can probably ask him yourself. In terms of input, the design and general personality were mine. I think I might have come up with the paper ball attack? I didn’t expect it to take up much of the window though, haha. I might be wrong though, its been a couple of years. I think I suggested an attack where the pen chased you like in the game Snake. I didn’t come up with the ‘3D tush wiggle attack’ - that has orange/blue mechanics which I didn’t know anything about til I played the game. He also ran the whole dialogue of both paths by me before the game - I think the Fight version is actually the funnier of the two and I totally recommend people do it at least once, haha. I think the array of faces So Sorry pulls in the whole thing are hilarious, too, and they’re part of the anxiety dealy I have. That was, by the way, the only real concession Toby asked of me - I think I suggested a dreary or stammery kind of anxiety, but both of those are covered by Napstablook and the character that would become Alphys. In fact, a lot of friends thought Alphys was my contribution due to how her anxiety manifests. I suggested a more desperate and energetic anxiety instead and we went with that! I’m really happy with how it turned out, despite the abuse people have been slinging my way. Nobody has to look at my work just because I’m in the game - I know my stuff is not for everyone, hence I keep it to the sites I post on and I’m not offended if people don’t like it. My work has no bearing on any discussion of the game though - my interests don’t touch the game, only my identity, and I’m happy to keep it that way. A lot of people compare my inclusion to Muffet and I think thats kind of weird. Muffet is tied to the intro by way of the bake sale, I’m tied to it by means of bad jokes. I think the Muffet fight is honestly probably one of my favourites, even if it is a little abrupt, its just paced kind of perfectly in its place in the game and the music sells it perfectly. So Sorry doesn’t have any pacing concerns, meanwhile, because they’re a secret and the music feels a little more out of place because it isn’t echoing earlier music - Spider Dance has elements of Dummy and Ghost Battle, I think. In any case, I think Muffet’s design is excellent and it feels a bit weird to compare the loser dragon I designed as a teenager ten years ago and identify with to something an incredibly talented comic artist drafted and designed more recently. I am what I am and a great artist I ain’t, haha. I just wanted to be a part of something I loved. I wasn’t the only one, considering other people opted in to contribute designs to the game. Woshua’s also great. I didn’t want to interfere with the game any more than I did in the end - I was super excited to see what Toby was going to make. In the end, the whole thing was worth the wait and I’m very happy to have played a very small part in helping the game be. I still have the original sprite I think Tuyoki did for So Sorry on the overworld but I don’t think its up to me to share it without her say so. I’d ask if its cool and link it, but I’m actually kinda shy, haha.

Also I’d like to say people have been, in general, really supportive - especially on Tumblr and FA. Thanks, guys! =3

Undertale:  An Illustrated Reaction (Spoilers)

I’ve carried this thing through a hundred universes, wearing a thousand faces.

It looks like a sword now, yes, but...

Sometimes it’s a gun... or a bow, or a blast of fire sent through my fingertips.

But it’s a weapon all the same.  A grim pen, writing histories in blood through innumerable worlds.

In all of those lands, it was a necessity.  There was no reasoning with my foes.

For one reason or another, they needed to die.  And this weapon kept me safe.

But here, in this world...

...it was the times I feared I would have to use it that I was most vulnerable.

I still think it would be funny for someone to do an “Ask Mogo the Living Planet/some other planet” blog though, and I still think you could pull it off, knowledge or no--it doesn’t have to make sense, it’s a living planet after all.  XP

There's a lot of ambiguity on this page as to whether you're a planet or a human/little meat thingie that lives on a planet. If it's the former, I would love to ask a lot of questions about the goings-on of being a planet, and I'm sure a lot of people (as in humans) would love to ask too; have you considered an ask blog? (If you're a human, maybe do this anyway, Ask Venus/Mars/Uranus/[exoplanet here] would be really quite fun!)

I was going through very old asks/notes and I found this and I smiled so big. That whole “ur a planet” thing was just hilarious and some of my favorite meananon!asks ever <3.
