In Bakers happiest memories monologue hes notably alone in all his memories ,except the one where beats up a drunk man for a girl ,but the happiest part of the memory isn't winning the fight,or even winning the girl it's the way she looked at him ,just the look. like he was the GREATEST THING .

It shows a trait that Baker has displayed and talked about before the idea that he and so many others want to be perceived and remembered beautifully .

He, like so many others, wants a leadlined coffin safe from becoming something dirty and ugly like a rat ,where he will be preserved and remembered and admired and LOVED for his best qualities, a fate only reserved for the dead. It is something art longs for and fixated on endlessly ,

the coffin isn't just a coffin it's that look the girl gave him forever. That look ,that feeling like he's not just something good but something great .

And do you know who reassured him he will have that coffin? Ray. That thing he so longed for but thought he couldn't have ,Ray promised him ,promised he'd give that to him, give that feeling to him ,preserve his memory ,see him beautifully and art trusts him cause it's RAY.

Ray who sees him like he's beautiful ,Ray who sees him like he's ethereal ,Ray who is always seeing art through the sun even when baker reveals his darkest sins, Ray who has been looking at him how he's always longed to be looked at ,loving him how he always longed to be loved constantly .

Ray, who even after art's smooth walk turns janky and clumsy,his beautiful face starved and gory ,his soft voice rough and heavy ,STILL PERCEIVES HIM THROUGH THE SUNLIGHT still sees him how he's always longed to be seen.

Like, he's great and beautiful and loved

He gave him the leadlined coffin and everything it represents. Let him be loved and adored for 5 days .he gave him exactly what he wanted and needed

Something people never talk about is how the thing that made Baker talk about his past was garraty, feeling as if not only that no one could relate to him but that no one could relate to his father .Garraty asks this question ,and Baker responds with vulnerability

Making the effort to relate with Ray not only through his father and his brother both being in law trouble and dead or practically dead.

But also trying to relate to rays father as well Even if doing so the others never look at him the same.He clearly still holds shame and knows the weight that telling the others would carry but he wanted Ray to feel seen fully.

And while Ray does see that shame and understands that weight ,rather than turn away or even be confused on how to feel ,he sees art as he always does with dignity and sees him through the sunlight.

You ever think about how in Art Bakers "all the good things that ever happened to me monologue." He alone in all his memories, and In the only one he isn't ,the thing hes happy about isn't the dance,or winning the fight ,or even the girl herself ,but just the fact that she JUST LOOKED AT HIM as if he was something great

Sorry everyone I'm back to complain again. What the FUCK are they doing with Baker's character.

Obviously I don't know exactly what the movie will be like...but from the details they've released I'm nervous.

With making him religious and making his reason to walk be 'going to the moon' it feels like they're ignoring the complexities of the book character. He's not a one dimensional, naive nice boy walking for his own gain. Guilt over his past and duty to his poor family (and a preoccupation with dying even though he's not religious) are a big part of his character imo, and I'm sad to think that may not be a part of the movie
