Star Wars Rare Ship Challenge June Challenge Announcement
What is the Star Wars Rare Ship Challenge?
The SWRSC is a monthly challenge dedicated to creating more content for the smaller ships in the Star Wars fandom. Each month participants create new content for one or two ships of their choice based on the theme of the month and their individual prompt. Fanfiction, fanart, fanvids, moodboards/aesthetics/collages and any other fan creation you can think of are allowed. Which ships are allowed? Check out our FAQ for more details!
This month’s theme is…
Myths and "Legends"
There's nothing more powerful than a good story, as we all know. Stories are about as integral to our development as humans as hunting and agriculture are, and because of this some of our stories stick around long after the people who first told them are gone. Our myths and legends continue to shape us, or literature, our films, and our lives to this day. And in honor of the power of these kinds of stories, SWRSC will be celebrating myths from around the world and the the old EU, now dubbed "legends".
Star Wars Theme
If you choose a Star Wars Theme this month, you will be assigned a story from the legends canon. You may or may not be familiar with it, but we're not asking you to do a complete retelling of it anyway. If you choose a Star Wars theme, we ask that you use the story as inspiration for what you do. Write a missing scene or a fix-it, put the characters from the story you got into another story, put different characters in the story you got - the possibilities are endless.
General Theme
If you choose a General Theme this month, you will be assigned a myth. And don't worry, we're not just sticking to Greek this time. Use the myth as inspiration for you work in any way you see fit.

2. Reblog this post between 5/23/19 and 5/31/19 to spread the word.

Hey everyone, sorry for such a late post. Real life has been overwhelming recently and I wasn't able to get the challenge together in time for you all to have a while to decide. I don't think it's fair to give you less than a week, so I'm going to have to cancel the May round.
However, we will be back up and running for June!
Sorry again about posting so late, guys.

If you had told Rose Tico six months ago that she’d be up to her elbows in engine wiring with the former Supreme Leader of the First Order on one side of her and the last Jedi on the other, she’d have laughed so hard she cried.
For April 2019, @starwarsrareship gave me the prompt “Sympathy For The Devil” for rosereylo (Rose/Rey/Ben). I’ve never written this ship before, and this fic was an absolute delight to write. I mean…Rey, Rose, and Ben hanging out on an old Rebel base, repairing ships together, falling in love along the way? Sign me the fuck up, please! I had so much fun with this. Thanks, @starwarsrareship for bringing this challenge to tumblr!
Rated T, 6053 words, complete. Tags: Fluff, Canon Compliant, Non-Linear Narrative, Polyamory, Finn/Poe mention, Author Knows Nothing About Ship Repair
Side note: did you know that the GFFA also has sonic screwdrivers? I didn’t, until I wrote this!

As long as he’s got the information and people operate as expected, the ship is a well-oiled machine and no one notices who’s responsible. That’s how it should be. Noticing one of the Stormtroopers and the way he moves is just, well, it’s a thing that happens. Then Captain Phasma decides the bridge crew needs to learn how to defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat and Mitaka’s world is turned upside-down. He didn’t think he liked surprises. He wasn’t entirely right; FN-2187 is a constant surprise, and Mitaka likes him just fine.

Star Wars Rare Ship Challenge April Challenge Announcement
What is the Star Wars Rare Ship Challenge?
The SWRSC is a monthly challenge dedicated to creating more content for the smaller ships in the Star Wars fandom. Each month participants create new content for one or two ships of their choice based on the theme of the month and their individual prompt. Fanfiction, fanart, fanvids, moodboards/aesthetics/collages and any other fan creation you can think of are allowed. Which ships are allowed? Check out our FAQ for more details!
This month’s theme is…
April Foolishness
This month’s prompts, as suggested by jadedofmara on PF, are a little different. April Fool’s Day is always fun for a little trickery and mischief so this year we’re supplying just that. This month’s prompts will be selected completely at random from either tvtropes or wookiepedia, depending on whether or not you choose to do a general or Star Wars theme. They could be something or someone you’re very familiar with, or they could be something completely foreign to you; it’s all up to luck.
Star Wars Theme
If you choose a Star Wars Theme this month, you will be assigned a character at random, via the random page button on wookiepedia. You must include this character in your work in some way, varying from a cameo appearance to an additional part of whatever ship you choose. (For an extra challenge, you can pick just one character when you sign up and make a work that ships your chosen character and the random one.) The character must appear in the fic, however, and may not only be mentioned by name.
General Theme
If you choose a General Theme this month, you will be assigned a trope at random, via tvtrope’s random button. You must include the trope in your work, whether that be as the main trope in the work or as one of many. (For an extra challenge, tell us to “pick 2” when you sign up and we’ll give you two tropes that must be included.) The trope(s) must appear in the work and may not be only mentioned or alluded to.
How To Participate
1. Follow the SWRSC blog!
2. Reblog this post between 3/25/19 and 3/31/19 to spread the word.
3. Send and ask and tell us what ship you’d like to write for this challenge, and whether or not you want a General Theme or a Star Wars Theme. One of our mods will comment back, telling you your answer has been recorded.

Conduct and Challenge Rules
Conduct Rules
1. No hate will be tolerated. The SWRSC is a celebration of fanworks and of fans and as such we will not tolerate hate directed at any ship, shipper, cast or crew member of Star Wars, or any Star Wars fan. If you have a problem with any ship it is your responsibility to use blacklist to keep from seeing content you don’t like. Kinkshaming is also not allowed. Any challenge participant who is found making derogatory remarks to or about another participant (past or present) will be warned for their first offense and banned from participating on the second.
2.Everything will be tagged in accordance with fandom standards and etiquette. This means that content warnings will be tagged “[content] cw”. All ships will be tagged with ship names (if they have one) and [character] x [character]. It is your responsibility to blacklist anything you do not want to see.
2a. The following things will be tagged: Major Character Death, Noncon/Rape, Dubcon, Underage*, Sexual Content, Graphic Violence, Incest, Gore/Blood, and Abuse.
*While we do allow content that involves minors under the age of 18, we ask you to keep the explicit sexual content to characters that are 16 or older in your work. You may create content about characters under the age of 16 knowing about, being curious about, or mentioning sex and sexual topics, and you may also create content where characters under 16 date, kiss, hold hands, ect.
3. Please post your own original content. This content may not have been posted anywhere else*.
*If you choose to sign up on Pillowfort and want to post to Tumblr or vice versa, that’s fine.
4. We have banned a few ships from the challenge and will do so in the future if/when they reach the point that they are no longer considered “rare”. This is not because we don’t like them, but because this is a rare ships challenge. The ships currently barred are Kylux, and Reylo. You may depict the barred ships as side or past relationships in any work you create but you may not write proxy fics or troll fics.
4a. A proxy fic is a fic that uses one relationship to set up another. This occurs when a fic starts out with Ship A but over the course of the work the characters break-up and Ship B is endgame. These kinds of fics are not allowed in the challenge as they pit ships against each other and often result in disappointment for rare pair shippers looking for content.
4b. A troll fic is a fic that pokes fun at ships or shippers in a mean spirited way. These fics are not allowed as they are not a celebration of rare ships and only serve to belittle and mock ships and shippers.
If you break any of these rules you will get a warning PM from one of the mods. If you continue to break rules you will be banned from the challenge. We do recognize that everyone is human and we all make mistakes, so if you break a rule on accident (you commented on a piece of art and it sounded rude but you didn’t mean it that way) it will not count against you if you rectify your mistake. Repeated and malicious rule breaking will result in a ban from the community.
Challenge Rules
1. Conduct rules regarding treating other fans with kindness apply here as well.
2. You will have two weeks to sign up for next month’s challenge. You will do this by reblogging the post introducing next month’s theme and by sending an ask with which ship(s) and theme you’d like to do. A mod will reply to you that they have received your sign up. During the first two days of the next month, you will receive an ask from one of the mods, telling you which prompt(s) you’ve been given and who your partner is. You will then have all month to create something for your prompt(s). Post the work to your blog first and use the tag “starwarsrareship”. A mod will then reblog it to the challenge blog. If you post has not been reblogged withing 72 hours of your posting, please notify a mod. If you do not have a specific ship in mind for the challenge, or you have several ships in mind for the challenge but cannot pick one, you may allow the mods to pick for you. When you sign up, you may either tell the mods they have full choice over your ship OR you can list up to three ships and get the mods to pick one or two of the ones listed for you. Keep in mind that if you give the mods absolute free reign over the choice you may wind up with some very strange pairings.
3. If you are creating a piece of art please limit yourself to two images.
4. If you are creating a gif set, please limit yourself to six images. Fewer is fine.
5. Moodboard/aesthetic posts must be all one image.
6. Videos must be at least 30 seconds long. There is no maximum.
7. There is no word limit or maximum for fanfic, but if the work is longer than 500 words the remainder of the fic must be under a read more. If the work contains graphic sexual content or violence, that must also be under a read more.
8. Everything you create for this challenge must be new, previously unposted work. You may not repost a fic that you’ve had published for a year as part of the challenge, but if you have something that has been previously languishing in your drafts, you may use it if it fits with your prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is the Star Wars Rare Ship Challenge?
SWRSC is a monthly challenge community for Star Wars fans who write fic, make art, create fanvids, post moodboards, and any and all artistic pursuits for their ships. Each month, we have a broad theme that all prompts fall under. Participants will have two weeks to sign up for next month’s challenge. After the first of the month they signed up for, they will be given a prompt and a partner and then have the whole month to create whatever they want in line with the prompt and theme. They can then post their creation and we will reblog it.
What exactly is a “rare” ship?
Good question. For the purposes of this challenge, a rare ship is any “ship” of two or more Star Wars characters that has fewer than 4,000 works on Ao3 where that ship is the only one tagged. This is because fics are often tagged with side relationships and it’s difficult to tell with numbers alone just how many fics tagged with “Ship A” and “Ship B” are really more about Ship B and which ones spend an equal time on both.
As it currently stands, this means that Kylux, and Reylo are disqualified for this challenge. All other Star Wars ships are fair game.
What about HanLeia/Anidala/Other Canon Ships/Legends Ships? Do they count as rare pairs?
If there are fewer than 4,000 tagged works on Ao3 for that ship, then yes, they do. We want to be as expansive as possible in our definition of “rare ship” to encourage creativity and celebration of all ships, even those that have been well loved in the past but left behind by the changing internet and fandom.
Can I make content that features polyamorous ships/ace characters/aro characters/platonic relationships? What about genderbends?
Absolutely! All interpretations and reinterpretations of sexuality, gender, and relationships are allowed! Don’t limit yourself to sexual and/or romantic relationships if you don’t want to.
Is NSFW content allowed?
Yes. However, if you want to post NSFW content it must be placed under a read more link.
Are taboo topics allowed, such as rape, incest, abuse, horror, and darkfic?
Yes, as long as you tag and warn for content that could be potentially triggering and/or upsetting for others. The moderators will also be tagging your posts when they are reblogged, but it’s always a good idea to add those tags to your posts.
Wait, I don’t want to work with a partner. Is this a collaboration challenge?
No, you don’t have to. Partners are assigned to get multiple interpretations of the prompts. You do not have to work with your partner if you don’t want to.
Can I sign up for more than one ship a month?
Sure, if you want to! You can sign up for two ships (and thus two prompts) a month. Just be aware that you have to create content for both of them individually, and cannot combine the two ships and prompts into one creation.
I signed up this month but life got really busy and I don’t think I can post my work on time! What do I do?
Contact the mods. If you have any trouble creating for the challenge don’t hesitate to let a mod know. We will be happy to give you an extension, provided you’re not asking the day of or after it was supposed to be posted. If you need to drop out of the challenge at any time, just let the mods know and it won’t count against you.
The current mods are: rosemoonweaver.
What if I signed up for the challenge and didn’t create anything? Can I still sign up for the next round?
It depends. If you let the mods know that you were having difficulty and needed to drop out then yes, you may sign up again. If you didn’t and failed to post anything then you will not be allowed to participate for one month.
