Mixed media fish using watercolour, pencil tone and plastic materials to portray the idea of plastic pollution causing fish to starve as their stomachs are full of plastic. I was inspired by William Cheselden's novel called Accuracy and Elegance in Cheseldens Osteographia (1733) by looking at the skeleton and anatomy of marine life. I was also inspired by the artists Peony Yip by her use of having fish cut open and Leonardo Da Vinci by the use of skeletons.
I think this worked well to portray the issue and the use of mixed media worked well especially with using actual plastic materials within the stomach to show that those are the types of things that are causing so much harm to fish and other sea animals. The fish skeleton i used was from the photoshoot from derby art museum and the cut open fish was used from an image online as i dont have access to any fishes or sea life for photography apart from the images at the museum.
I think this worked well as an overall development as it shows the entire process of the harm and then the aftermath of the final cause shown bu the half skeleton. The pastics i used from fruit packaging also links well as it looks very similar to fish nets. This idea links well to my radical theme as it shows the harsh reality of the brutal effects that plastic pollution causes to sea life and shows that it carries on there will become less sea life as their quality of life is corrupted and shortened by plastic pollution and microplastics fish believe to be food.

Examples of anatomy of fish, octopus and turtles linking to my research and will base my next idea on anatomy and skeletons due to starvation feom plastic pollution and how it effects their anatomy, ability to live and quality of live when consuming plasic on a daily basis.

Expressive continuous line drawing of fishes and fish skeleteons inspired by peony yip and leonardo da vinci. Shows the effects of plastic pollution on fish how it causes faster death and decay and decreases their qaulity of life. I also used my research to link to these drawings and used a watercolour background of similar colours to the sea but also adding slight decay tones like browns and greens and also some reds to show toxicity, blood and adding different colours that don't match the colour scheme to portray the how plasric pollution is poisonous to marine life. The research of starvation and anatomical drawings by William Cheselden helped developed this idea with having an empty stomach and just the skeleton.

Accuracy and Elegance in Cheselden's Osteographia (1733) by William Cheselden
Novel with a landmark in history of anatomical illustration. Many of his drawings are in the collection of the Royal Academy in London. I am inspired by the anatomical drawings of the animals and could incorporate it within my work especially with the recent research of plastic pollution causing starvation and a deception of fullness and focusing on the skeleton and anatomy of a fish and other marine animals.

Article on effects of plastic pollution and how it causes marine animals to starve as they believe their stomachs are full due to consuming so much plastic material and can even effect the corals and any sort of marine life.

Observational drawing of a fish with plastic in the stomach inspired by the wet market research and used the artists peony yip and leonardo da vinci for this drawing.
I think this drawing went well and links similarly to the artists and research. I will plan to do more drawings inspired by peony yip and also do some more expressive style drawings like continuous line. I will continue working from this research and artist styles to add more drawings with a variety of techniques.

Artist: Peony Yip
Relates and links to my context research about the wet markets as fish are found with plastic inaide their stomachs. This artist uses manipulation within her drawings like adding flowers to the fish and took inspiration from her to use platic materials instead of her flowers idea

Collage inspired by artists Veerle Symoens and Charlie anderson and research about the fish with plastic in stomachs at wet markets in a magazine/advertisement style. This collage portrays a family dinner but the food is replaced with plastics and fish containing microplastics it has consumed but ironically shown as if it is healthy and restaurant quality food when it's infact the opposite. The radical contrast of the "healthy food" also portrays the fact that fish and other marine animals can't tell the difference between plastics and their usual food so they believe that the plastic is actually good for them.
I think this collage worked well to portray a juxtaposition between the advertisement of good quality food and the plastic inside the fish with other plastic materials and links well to my recent research about the wet markets. I will continue to do work within this topic and do more drawing based art pieces next startung with observational and then using different techniques and medias to see which works best and also trying to include plastic materials to create texture and layers ans linking it to previous artists.

Article feom The Guardian about fish ingesting plastic and actively seeking it oit as it smells and appears so similar to food and hard to tell the difference especially if plastic pollution continues to rise. More fish and other marine life have been found with microplastics in their stomachs in wet markets when they have been cut open. I will use this research to help continue development ideas and do some observational drawings of fish with plastic in their stomachs also suggested by Tracey as feedback for taking my work further and researching into specific topics within plastic pollution. I will also use the collage idea again inspired by the same 2 artists as last time to create a collage based on this topic idea.

Final result of the printmaking with drawings and plastic materials. All of my print experiments are at college and used the most successful ones to turn into final developments. I used acrylic transfer prints on a couple to transfer text about plastic pollution relating to the image and also linking it to Kristy Patterson. My drawings were inspired by my photoshoot and based around marine life amd decay and effects of plastic pollution. I think these worked really well and i like the multiple effects and layers it has and portrays well how sea life are negatively impacted by plastic and the materials add a lot of textural detail and link well together.

Internet photo research of wet markets ourbreak. Fish were found to have plastic in their stomachs when cut open as they mistake it for food and becomes toxic to marine life. This research will help with development ideas and including more plastic materials in my artwork, i will do some drawings based on these images as i can't photograph anything like this due to lockdown and also using my previous photoshoot for ideas.

Plastic pollution collage inspired by veerle symoens and Charlie anderson by using an online editting site called pixlr/editor to photoshop images together with layering effects and relevant patterns, lettering and images to show the effects on marine life due to plastic pollution and how sea animals don't see the difference between plastic and food and results in a shorter life span from plastic consumption. I also used octopuses influenced from my derby art musuem photoshoot as i saw an octopus in a glass container and thought it would work well to include it. I think it worked well and a lot better than i imagined as i don't do a lot of collage and i think it also worked well to portray the right message and link to my theme. I like the contrast between vintage and retro looks and the juxtaposition between an old look and a modern problem. To improve i could have done with more of the decaying and skeleton based animals to link also to other artists and improve further but i could include that in another collage development. I could have also added ripping effects to link to both artists but easier to do that by creating a physical collage and not on editting software.

Despite the fact she uses a lot of portarits i could include her techniques and different ways of layering within my link to link to my theme more accurately such as plastic materials and more relevant images based on animals and skeletons
