when i was a kid i got a 90% on my kindergarten "what are your favorite things?" test because for the question "what is your favorite animal?" i wrote down "puma" and it got marked wrong because my teacher said a puma isnt even an animal its a kind of shoe
#i *know* i have stories like this from school but my memories are purposefully vague :)#i do remember the bitch professor from college though. she hated that i didnt pay attention in class#and thought me and my group of friends ''put on airs'' bc we spoke to each other in english#anyway one of my final exams was to write and run a program in one of the computer labs#how this worked was there was a list of use cases that we were already provided at the beginning of the semester#and during the course of the semester we would discuss the programs for these problems#and in the lab you would be asked to write debug and execute the program for any one of the cases from that list#these programs were pages and pages long each mind you#and so what happened at the end of the semester was. every student would try to memorise the programs#line. by. line. it was crazy. i never could memorise anything like that#day of the exam you're supposed to write down the program on a sheet of paper. post which the examiner would assign a system to you.#i just knew the command glossary and syntax so i wrote what i thought would be a working program and showed it to the lady#she looked at it and smirked and was like ''oh sure. run this one lets see what happens.''#predictably it didnt work because OBVIOUSLY there would have been errors i wouldnt have noticed. on a sheet of fucking paper.#i just stayed calmed. debugged the damn thing. rewrote a couple clunky lines. and lo and behold! the program worked!#i showed the output to her and she kust looked pissed and said ''we shouldnt let people like you use the computer at all.''#which?? exCUSEme?? i wrote and debugged a program from scratch then and there?? IN MY COMPUTER SCIENCE DEGREE???#i think i scored like 38/50 or something despite my program being *perfect*#fuck you too lady

Some truths about the publishing industry because I certainly got blindsided when going in. Now I'm so broken by this industry I struggle to encourage aspiring writers lmao
#grew up wanting to be a writer and honestly this is why ive stuck to fandom writing as an adult.#every single author choosing to continue with their craft in this economy has my respect#keeping writing as a hobby and separate from my professional career has been the best for me (for now)#iron widow is on my list i really should read it soon huh#interesting#edited to add: dont mean to sound discouraging about writing as a career in my tags btw#this is my opinion and this is what has worked for me and my mental health personally.#this post addresses and clarifies some important truths about the industry. a reality check rather than a discouraging note.#good luck to every writer out there <3
