i’ll probably expand on this later, but the best ADHD Hack ™ I’ve found/sussed out is:Â
bundle habits together, but don’t bundle tasks together.

If youve made a post abt this already pls ignore this, but if not, any chance y’all can explain to my economically illiterate ass wth is going on w GameStop and the like? It looks hilarious in a car crash kind of way except it’s a car I’ve never seen before and I have no clue how it’s driving
Alright lemme do my best here:
A share in gamestop is just a piece of paper that says “I am owed 1/100,000th of the profit Gamestop made this quarter.“
Lets say they cost 1$ each, so you buy a share.
If gamestop makes 200,000$ in profit that quarter, you get 2$ of it. Nice! You’ve doubled your money!
If gamestop makes 50,000$ in profit that quarter, you only get 50c. Lame. You’ve lost half your money.
If you buy enough shares, companies usually give you a spot on their coveted Board of Investors, so you get a say in how the company spends your money.
Thats how shares work.
Lets say you’re an investment firm, and you own 100 shares in gamestop. You see that Gamestop hasnt been doing well recently. You’ve got a brilliant plan.
You’re going to to sell all 100 of your stocks, wait for the price to go down, and then buy them all back on the cheap.
If all goes well, you’ll sell 100 stocks for 1$ each, netting you a cool 100$. Then in a few months after the price goes down, you'll buy back those same 100 stocks for 75c each. You’ll have the same stocks, but be 25$ richer. This is called shorting. Firms do it all the time.
Except, hold on, a bunch of redditors noticed you doing this. They bought all your stocks, but when you wanted to come buy them back cheap, they’d cranked up the price tenfold! Now you’re just 100$ in the hole, and you need to get those stocks back or you lose that seat on the gamestop board of investors, so you’re forced to buy from the redditors at whatever price they’re asking!
So you cave, you keep your board position and spend 1000$ on a 100$ box of stocks, and now you’re hella in debt.
You are very mad about this, even though this process is how you make a lot of your money. You go to the federal government crying for a bailout. You beg for some new FTC regulations to ensure these filthy poors can never do this to you again. You are probably going to get both.

this is unrelated to anything on this account tbh but i need to say it somewhere
please miss me with that radfem shit. i know yall think you’re just standing up for women - i know that gender and gender politics are very nuanced and intersectionality can be hard to wrap your head around and there’s an element of comfort in feeling like the Enlightened Few - but oh my god im too tired to deal with it.
you’re wrong. i’m sorry. you’ll figure it out someday, i hope. until then: please peddle it somewhere else. i am one of the people your politics tells you to hate anyway.

You do owe the world things, actually. It’s just those things tend to be perfectly balanced.Â
You owe people respect and dignity; they owe the same to you.Â
You owe children kindness; as a child, you are owed a kind world.Â
You are owed nourishment by any world that brings you into existence, you are owed a chance to thrive. In return, you owe the same to any people or creatures you agree to take guardianship over.
The issue is not that we, and others, and the world in general, owe each other. We are all born being owed certain things, and by living we acquire debts; life requires this interdependence to thrive. The issue is that we are often misled as to what this actually means, by those who would take advantage of us. We are lied to by authority figures who do not want to respect us, or acknowledge their responsibility to us. Worse: we mistakenly come to believe that taking advantage of others is the key to restoring balance. We were cheated, so others must be cheated in turn.Â
We trap ourselves in these deadly cycles. Society betrays us so we are taught to disengage, to break it further. We are taught to forget the value of repair. We are taught to forget what is owed. Fundamentally, we are taught to forget that people are owed basic decency. When we say we owe the world nothing, we forget we are affirming the opposite: the world owes us nothing in return.
But this is so incredibly untrue. We owe the world things, and are owed in return, and that’s good, that is so so good. I would hate to live in a world where I didn’t believe people were fundamentally owed dignity and decency and kindness. The real issue is that these things often go unpaid, and unreciprocated. We think: “The world gave me nothing, though it should have. Why should I owe anything?”Â
And that is such a dangerous way to think. That type of thought just turns you into another gear in a destructive machine. That type of thought just allows despair to self-replicate. That type of thought validates the abusers and ensures there is never a shortage of victims. Feed those kinds of thoughts, and a plug gets pulled somewhere inside you, and lets the humanity drain away. You lose everything, trying to steal from others what was stolen from you. You cheat yourself and the world, with that kind of thinking.Â
I promise you this: When we try to balance the scales by refusing to pay forward what wasn’t paid to us, we just double the debt and burden the world in the process. A better world requires that we first do better.

i mean, the shit sells, and as long as the shit sells -
actually that’s probably unfair of me, i haven’t read all of these books and i shouldn’t judge them SOLELY by their very similar fire comparisons.
and there’s probably just as much shit in the adult SFF market; i’m just better at navigating that, and will duck out of a shitty adult book rather than try to power through it. that said.
i do feel like “originality” is overrated - give me a cliche idea executed well over a unique idea executed terribly - but i did a solid six months of reading fantasy YA for comp purposes, and every single book, bar ONE (dread nation by justina ireland, easily the best YA i’ve read in years), had the same exact twist at the end. protagonist is special in exactly the way they need to be to win - through no effort of their own.
to me, that goes beyond cliche. shit’s just lazy! at least when adult SFF missteps, it does so in more varied ways.

favorite thing is going through the “quotes” sections on goodreads for YA novels or YA categories and all the Deep Meaningful Quotes are just the most trite, empty bullshit ever and they’re not even expressed eloquently
And every book has basically the same one too. It’s like
“We are a fire...and we will burn across the sky together,”
#i don't remember all the YA i was reading then but#among others#the hazel wood#strange the dreamer#snow like ashes#v different books!#all came highly recommended#AND YET

exhibit A of why a lot of the current YA falls flat for me, even when it’s queer (which iirc several of the quoted works are)
i’m sorry guys but you just can’t ALL be melodramatic in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. i don’t want THAT much cake.
(honestly i tend to viscerally dislike anything that reminds me of the worst parts of my teenage writing.)

Please remember that almost everyone around you is traumatized. I didn’t understand this when I was younger. I wondered why people acted so strangely and irrationally. Maybe all children wonder this. The author Robert Anton Wilson said (paraphrasing), “We have never seen a completely sane adult human.” No one makes it out of this life alive. It’s not their fault. Mercy, kindness, forgiving — these are what makes one human. They are other names for love. People break in the strangest of ways.
