writing an essay in college is very different from writing an essay in high school. personally, i write more research/history papers than literary essays (the liberal arts life and curse), so this is going to be a post on how a general research-y essay that has a thesis and arguments.
intro
don’t open with a quote and don’t be overly broad.
avoid generalizations
your intro should address the topic of your essay (ex. the significance of gardens in renaissance society), and then narrow down to what you want to talk about in regards to your topic (ex. the political influence of the Medici gardens during the renaissance)
thesis! it should include the argument you want to make about the narrowed down topic, and three (or however many your class requires) reasons to support it. I like to think of it as W = X + Y + Z.
your thesis explains who, what and why in a concise manner.
body
topic sentences should not be a word for word copy of your thesis.
the order of arguments in your thesis is the order of your paragraphs
depending on the length of your essay, there should be at least two justifications to your argument.
so, just as the intro has a formula, X = A + B, and so forth.
A and B should be backed up with some sources/quotes. don’t forget that if you are quoting from class notes to put either the prof’s last name, or (class notes)
be sure to have clear and concise arguments, don’t be flowery
USE WORDS THAT ARE ACCURATE. thesaurus is great but if you use a word that sounds cool but doesn’t capture the meaning you want to convey then don’t use it, because it may just change the meaning of your argument
quote whatever isn’t yours. it is completely fine if 90% of your sentences are quotes. its weird to get used to, but don’t worry about it.
conclusion
the worst part in my opinion.
synthesize don’t summarize. show how your arguments relate back to the thesis.
try not to copy paste your thesis into the conclusion, word it so that the readers understands that through XYZ, you were able to conclude and support argument W (referring back to the thesis formula)
do not add any new information, do not add quotes.
your final sentence should tie up the essay in a pretty bow, but try to avoid clichés
protips
when writing the body paragraphs, your ‘weakest’ paragraph should be in the middle, strongest as your last, and the second best as your first.
if you’re stumped on the intro, skip it. write out the body first, then the intro and you’ll be able to concisely word your thesis
think of your essay as an infomercial. your intro is the loud and clear HERES MY PRODUCT, the body is blasting information on why the product is so cool, and the conclusion is the final push for the viewer to buy that product. make your teacher want to agree with your thesis!
use a mix of paraphrase and quotes!
don’t forget your works cited lmao (the MLA Handbook is a gr8 tool, also OWL Purdue)
prime time for essay writing is in the morning or at night, but make sure you edit it meticulously
EDIT ON PAPER NOT ON YOUR SCREEN
stay humble, study hard

characters/network page: doll with a gun by juliaroleplays
It’s been a few years since I updated my characters page, so I decided to code one that had everything I wanted. This theme comes in two versions and features:
the ability to filter your characters/individuals by multiple criteria (version 1 only)
a 100px by 100px icon for your mascot/faceclaim
a 270px by 150px header image for each profile
sections for the character’s name, their trope/label and a quote/lyric that describes them
a section for additional information; it auto scrolls when the text exceeds the height of the box, so include as many details as you want
links so you can link to character tags, ship tags etc
I tried to label everything to make it as easy to possible to customize, but it can be difficult if you don’t have any experience with html/css or isotope filters, so please feel free to send me a message if you need any help customizing anything.
Special thanks to:
@octomoosey for the code to reveal the filters; minor tweaks have been made

having a 3yo brother means i get exposed to kids’ shows way more often than i thought i would at this point in my life, but man, binge watching thomas the tank engine as an adult is a wild fucking experience
all these trains (and there’s like 20 counting locomotives alone, don’t even get me started on the anthropomorphic train cabins) are MAD competitive the whole time and will constantly fuck up their own whole day by tring to prove they’re the biggest baddest train. and like, i understand that you gotta get you plot from somewhere and i imagine plotlines like this happen in cars etc. as well, but the other day i was watching and i noticed that all these goddamn locomotives have DRIVERS in them. that apparently have no control over their train’s actions at all whatsoever. so these trains wake up, pick up their drivers, go to work, get taunted by another train who’s like “ha ha i see u there with your 4 cabins but did you know i can pull SIX cabins and still fucking book it at 80mph” and the 4 cabin train will be like “fuck it i gotta prove myself now, hook me up with 4 more cabins” and will inevitably derail themselves or some shit while the engine driver just shuts up and kicks back the whole time
i explained this to my brother and was like, is that fucked up or what, but he just pointed at the green train and went “that’s percy” so i guess that’s his take on the situation

Quoll Writer
I recently discovered a novel planner/writing program that doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of publicity behind it yet. It has a lot of good, useful features, so I wanted to do a quick review of it.
Quoll Writer is a free, open-source program with a minimalist feel. Unfortunately, it is currently only available for Windows, but it looks like they are trying to feel out if people are interested in a Mac/Linux version.
You can create scenes, chapters, character bios, locations, and items. This is the main screen:
At the bottom of the main screen’s navigation pane, there are options to save chapter text, add new items (like plot outline, scenes, characters, etc.), edit chapter information, view wordcounts (I’ll come back to this), toggle the spellcheck, delete items, and other tools.
Character Bios:
You can link characters to other characters, as well as tag them to specific chapters. As you can see at the bottom of the Character screen, clicking on any specific page (Character 1, Chapter 1, etc) will open up a new tab rather than a new window. I particularly like this because it cuts down on distraction and makes it much easier to switch between different items.
If you click the fourth symbol on the bottom of the main chapter screen, it will bring up wordcount and other information, including words typed in this session, and words per chapter:
If you click the ‘View Detail’ link, it will bring up a handy chart showing your progress:
You may have noticed by now several icons in the upper right-hand corner. The first of these will take you to an Idea Board, where you can add ideas for chapters, scenes, characters, locations, and items. You also have the ability to create your own Idea categories, which I think is a nice touch.
The symbol on the farthest right will bring up a menu where you can open different projects, save snapshots of your projects, and import and export. It also gives you access to the Warm-Up exercices, which is one of my favorite features of Quoll Writer. It gives you a writing prompt, and you can set a time or wordcount goal. You can even add your own writing prompts.
Another fun feature is the Achievement board. As you use Quoll Writer, you can earn achievements. You can even set Quoll Writer to play a small sound to alert you to a new achievement.
There is also a full-screen, distraction-free mode:
Quoll Writer seems like a great program. So far, I have only found two downsides to this program. The first is that it may be difficult to organize worldbuilding notes. The second is that you cannot import pictures, which is a major drawback for me because I love to include character inspiration pictures. However, I contacted the creators and they said that is a feature they plan on including in one of the future updates.
If you’re interested in learning more about Quoll Writer, you can find a full list of features here, and download it here!
