How to “orphan” a work on A03

Due to … recent discoveries, and some friends’ interest in the topic, I decided to make a how-to guide!

So A03 has this really cool mechanic called “orphaning”. if you’re embarrassed/not happy/whatever with a current fic you’re writing, you can “orphan” it. Basically, you transfer ownership to the A03 orphan account, where it can still be enjoyed by others, without it necessarily being tied back to you.

NOTE: ORPHANING IS PERMANENT. BE SURE YOU REALLY WANT TO ORPHAN THAT WORK

Here’s an example of an orphaned fic. (Totally not one of my own embarrassing fics that I wanted to sweep under the rug no siree bob)

So, how do you do it? Let me show you.

If you scroll aaaaaaaaaall the way down to my second fic on this website, you’ll see one called “Prince and the Photographer”. I really don’t like it. The characters are ooc, the plot is just wacky, I’m just plain not happy with it.

It’s still decently well-liked, so I want people to be able to still read it. So I’m going to orphan it.

Edit the work you want to orphan

It’s at the top bar.

Then this page will pop up. You have two options: Leave your pseud (username) on the fic, or take it off. This also includes mentions of your pseud in your descriptions and comments. Taking the pseud off is the default, and if you really don’t want people to come back to you (say you used to be really into one fandom but don’t want to write for it anymore, or it’s an incomplete fic you don’t want to complete), then select this option.

But if you’re okay with people knowing you wrote it, then select the second option. I was okay with people knowing this fic was by me because it’s not a travesty and not too far from what I make now.

Then just click Yes, I’m sure, and you’re done!

So here’s what a fic that’s had the name taken off looks like: 

Versus one with the pseud: 

(note that clicking on the username of the second fic will not bring you to your dashboard OR the orphan account. It will take you to an entirely different dashboard. SO if you have multiple orphaned fics with your pseud still attached, I imagine they’d all be together.)

Transmigrator vs Reincarnator

I have recently noticed that for some people, those 2 TOTCF terms have caused confusion, so let me explain them. (It would be important to note that I have not yet read part 2, so if there is any new/additional information than that provided in part 1, it won't be mentioned).

TRANSMIGRATOR: This term is Cale's situation entirely. Basically, a transmigrator is someone who gets transported to another world and possesses someone else's body. Kim Rok Soo's soul was transported into Cale Henituse's body (and in this case Cale Henituse's soul was switched with Kim Rok Soo's, so now Cale's soul lives in Kim Rok Soo's body).

It's basically just a body swap. Kim Rok Soo was in his body, and he woke up in a different one. Woah! Transmigration ...

NOVEL SPOILERS (Context) : The reason that Cale's soul was transported was because of a deal that the Original!Cale made with the GoD. Now Original!Cale's soul inhabits Kim Rok Soo's body and Cale's soul who originated from Kim Rok Soo now lives in Cale Henituse's body. Think of it as a swap.

REINCARNATOR: The White Star is a reincarnator. Basically, the White Star lives multiple lives. Every time he dies, his soul is transported to another body where he re-begins his life. Think of it this way, when someone dies, their soul dies too, but the White Star's soul doesn't die, so instead it jumps to another body whenever the previous body dies.

NOVEL SPOILERS (Cause) : Of course, no being is just born a reincarnator. The reason that the White Star is a reincarnator is because of the curse that was put in place by Sheritt and the Dragon Slayers to protect her children. Basically, the curse states that whoever brings harm to the dragon children shall never be able to die and never be able to feel anything that brings them joy. The White Star broke that curse in his first life and is now a reincarnator, but he can't enjoy his life. He isn't able to sleep, to taste, to feel difference in temperature or even have people he cherishes because they will be taken away by the curse. And to think that he chose this life just because he wanted to become strong and dominate the world like the Ancient White Star.

I didn't think people would get confused over this, because the meanings of the words are vastly different (and the novel explains it really well), but after reading the 5th post referring to Cale as a reincarnator (and occasionnaly WS as a transmigrator), ive had enough

Vigilante!Deku fics be like

they're good like that. It's called ✨character development ✨.

Anyways, talking about vigilante!Deku fics, you guys should go read 'heap of ashes that i am' on AO3 by bunjeegumboy. It's completed with 44 chapters and 226 595 words.

It starts off with Midoriya getting bullied by good ol' Bakugo for being quirkless. Soon after, he attempts suicide by jumping off a building into the river(?) and hits a rock when he drops, that ends up killing him. However, he wakes up a few hours later in some cave (if I remember correctly) and is left confused... the story starts unfolding.

Also, Bakugo witnessed Midoriya's suicide, and that kind of fucked him up, so he goes to therapy 👍. He's trying to get better, and tries to handle his anger better. Spoiler!: he meets Izuku again and it goes very... interestingly.

It's all awesome tho, such a great read. Love the characters and all. And how can it be a Vigilante!Deku fic if he doesn't get adopted by the EraserMic couple?

Also, Shinsou is his best friend :)
