In the original novel of "The Wizard of Oz" the slippers were silver but for the 1939 film they changed the slippers to ruby as they were more vibrant on screen, especially against the yellow brick road. The film adaptation of "Wicked" has a little nod to the ruby slippers, which became iconic in their own right. The Wizard of Oz (1939) | Wicked (2024)

I am so conflicted about the drama in the arcane fandom regarding Meljayvik because it's all just so messy.
For one, not everyone likes every ship and that is okay. You don't have to like Meljayce or Jayvik, it's okay to only like one of the two or none at all.
But then there is the disposable black gf trope that makes this whole thing tricky. I hate this trope so damn much, it isn't fair. At all.
But then also Mel is SO MUCH more than Jayces lover in the story, like her romantic relationship with Jayce was a tiny part of her character and their relationship with each other as well. So I don't like the idea of reducing her to just that. Mel's arc this season was all about her other qualities, her intelligence, her power and her relationship to her mother, not about her love for Jayce or whatever.
I absolutely love Mel as a character. She went from someone who I thought would be a cunning villain, to this caring and intelligent leader, who will do whatever she thinks is best for her people.
Yet people always reduce her to "the girl that gets in the way of the Yaoi" or "Jayce’s love interest", like no come on?! She never got in the way of anything and she isn't just Jayce’s girlfriend. She doesn't lose her purpose if people don't like her together with Jayce, because that wasn't even what her arc was about! Free my girl!

Elora — dead.
Kino — thought alive, but had to kill his fake likeness, so he died again and had to mourn him.
Ambessa — had to end her life through a shady deal with Black Rose, dead.
Tortured for who knows how long, mentally, and physically through how many potential iterations of her loved ones.
Her legacy/bloodline on her father's side, unknown. She is struggling what it means for her as a Medarda
Jayce — the person we saw she could drop her guard around. Spited her and blamed her for the choice HE made, mind you, gave a weak ass I was an ass, gone/deadish
Had to come to her powers and fight for her life. What more does it mean?
Left Piltover, the place she helped build and lead, to now has to go back to a place she was exiled from and has to lead a faceless army
But in all of it, no one and I mean NO ONE could give Mel a shoulder to cry on for longer than ten seconds?
Mel is a confirmed empath, but where is HER empathy or comfort that she gets in return. It was nowhere to be found!

The arcane animators have lost their minds talking about Mel’s character that way. They’re no better than the racist jayvik fans who diminish her because she gets in the way of their ship. I’m so mad and disappointed. Once again, the disposable black girlfriend trope is in full effect. Mel deserves so much better than this.

The lack of Mel centric fics on A03 is really dissapointing but I'm not surprised. Also why see they all focused on Jayce and Victor? Or them as a ship?? All of them are centered around Mel in the disposable Black Girlfriend trope.

They can take a lot from us, but they cannot take away the fact that Jayce loved this woman with everything he had.

I really wanted Mel to break down and full on ugly cry this season. The closest we got was when she was crying into Kino, and even then she seemed to be restraining herself. I wanted a display of grief on par with what Jinx and Vi get to display. And yes, I absolutely blame the strong black woman archetype. Mel has been through so, so much and she barely gets to shed two tears on screen.
Also, they absolutely fumbled Meljay. I loved many things about the finale, but this was not one of them. What I keep coming back to, though, is that Mel comforts Jayce multiple times in the show, and he never does the same for her. I was really hoping to see something like that this season.

I’m just a little like… devastated that Jayce DIED, and Mel didn’t acknowledge it??? She loved him. She truly, genuinely loved him. And we saw enough to know that he still cared about her. He still loved her. All his visions were of Viktor AND Mel. And we never see her get the chance to mourn him. He never gets to say goodbye.
