anyway one of the most important things to remember about steve is that he’s always been a fish out of water. he’s always been out of place. he has literally never belonged anywhere–not in brooklyn, not in the army, not until he met the avengers did he have a group of like-minded people with the drive and passion to change and protect the world.
like. there’s panels in Man Out of Time where steve effectively puts his foot in his mouth by dissing cap in front of the guys who are pretty much idolizing him. and if bucky hadn’t been there to smooth things over, he would’ve gotten into a fight. like, it could be read as just steve not thinking cap is all that bc he’s also cap, but honestly it seems more to me that this is a common occurrence with steve–that he says what’s really on his mind, regardless of whatever trouble it’s gonna get him into. and this happens everywhere he goes–school, jobs, the army…. it’s not really until he meets a group of like-minded individuals, people with abilities and bright minds and passion and a will to actually do things that he finds a place where he belongs. it takes him 22 years to find a family–not just one or two individuals–that supports and loves him as steve rogers, not cap. and it’s why the avengers will always be so so so important to steve–why he’s always so defensive and protective of it and it’s members when shit hits the fan, why he’s so passionate about making sure they always exist. that’s his family, all of them, and it’s his home

Avengers (1963) #277
so this is like… one of the first times, if not the first time the mansion is destroyed in comics. and not like, a wall is knocked down, but having major structural damage with parts of the actual floor missing. and this is all from a fight with some villains baron zemo gathered, all with the purpose of hurting the avengers, but steve most of all because he killed zemo’s father.
and this is just… heart-wrenching. i mean, steve didn’t grow up with a lot. his mom pretty much supported the both of them by herself. and then he joined the army and pretty much didn’t keep a lot then either, because he was constantly on the move, going to the front lines. then he dies, and who knows what happens to his belongings, because there’s no one to ship them to–so more than a few of them, i imagine, end up in a museum, or bought and sold in auctions for collectors. so when steve comes back, he pretty much has only the things he was wearing–his ripped to shreds army fatigues, his cap uniform, and his shield.
so anything of his he had from before… if it was in a museum, he probably could’ve requested it back, and he might’ve pulled a few things, but not everything, especially with the classification of his missions and identity, a lot of the things in the museums were probably general captain america things. the army probably held onto his things bc hoarding is the biggest government guilty pleasure, a portion of them classified, again, for being about steve rogers and cap’s missions, and he probably got all or most of that back upon waking. and then there’s all the things that went to auction, to varying degrees of sentimental, but like. once it’s at auction, there’s not a ton you can do to get it back aside from buying it. which… he has no money. which probably means that like. tony had to buy it back for him.
so all the things he has here–they’re mementos, but they’re important to steve. he’s had to work, in one way or another, to get them back. all his earthly belongings, all the ties he had to his memories, boiled down to the contents of one room. that was it. pictures of his friends, old journals filled with his thoughts, clippings of his and bucky’s adventures–all of it, all the good things he loved about his life, gone. gone.
and it’s irreplaceable, right? he can’t replace a picture of his mother. she’s dead. and sure, he could tape it back together, but now every time he looks at it, he’s going to see zemo ripping it in half all over again. and what about next time? is this–are his belongings–going to keep being used against him every time a fight comes to the mansion? like… it’s no wonder that after this, steve doesn’t really… nest, anywhere else. his bedrooms are all rather plain and functional–i think the most i’ve seen are some pictures of friends, or a few posters, but never to the extent that he had here. i think this makes him so afraid to personalize things again that he just… doesn’t. he can’t handle the loss.

captain america #696 & #700
so the first three panels are from #696 and talk about how steve is traveling through the country and… literally is poor. like. he has his bike and three (3) dollars and a penny to his name. he is running out of minutes on his phone. he offers to wash dishes for lunch–
and then after a time travel escapade, in issue #700, he fuckin. writes a letter to sharon (which the whole thing is super sweet, he loves her so so much), and specifically mentions that tony is monitoring his bank account and put more money in and–
listen. listen to me. steve rogers is poor as a mouse and he lives off of his friends’ generocity.

i think a lot about that moment at the start of house of m when tony is saying that he wasn't drunk in front of the un and he asks if everyone believes him and steve is immediately like "yes"
yeah it's a steve-and-tony thing, steve will always believe things tony says with less proof than others need to provide. but he also knows just how important tony's sobriety is to him and how seriously he takes it. if tony says he didn't drink, then he didn't drink.
i like to think he'd turn that cheerleading and incredible belief towards his other friends in recovery too.

genuinely steve’s bathroom is probably the epitome of bargain bin shopping. like, the man uses generic store brand shampoo, no conditioner, bar soap. he has a good razor blade, i’ll say that, one he has to sharpen. but uh, yeah. he probably just has the basics, all or most everything being generic brand. no drugs, no gels, no fragrances, just stuff to get clean. he might have gone a step up in aftershave–but like. old spice, aqua velva blue ice, or some pinaud clubman

just an fyi, steve’s favorite movie canonically is you’ve got mail, he’s rented yankee doodle dandy so many times the video store he rented from would rather he just buy it, and he brought a collection of jack benny’s radio show, the soundtrack to anything goes, and radiohead’s kid a with him camping–
look, steve deals with a lot of charged, intense things in his job. he is a living political figure–he can’t sneeze without running into someone who has an opinion on what he should do and stand for. he has to fight that every single day of his life. so in his free time? he listens to things and watches movies that are funny, and cute, and romantic. things that are gonna make him happy, and relax him. and you have to remember too, a lot of 40s media did lean towards romance (and mystery, which he’d also enjoy). but there wasn’t a ton of violence–which, yknow, makes sense, considering there’s a world war going on and the movies were an escape from that. which is how steve still treats his media–as an escape from his job and his world, a moment to catch his breath and remind him of all the good things in life that he has to fight for.
and he’s also just?? a big romantic sap. he sings in the shower. he clearly loves musicals. just let him be a big softy okay

Happy Bug Day ;; Here's what bug Hank thinks of when he sees his fellow Avengers.
[ Diabolical Ironclad Beetle;; An extremely rare beetle whos shell is So Tough and So Hard it literally cannot be crushed with a boot. In fact their armor is so strong that it needs to be Drilled Through in order to study the bug below. (no beetles are harmed in this prosses) ]
[ Mason Wasp ;; A wasp with a potent sting, they will only sting if provoked! These wasps serve as important natural pest controllers, often keeping the population of plant destroying bugs in check. ]
[ Tigar Swallowtail Butterfly ;; The national bug and while solitary at times, they are known to seek out water spots for others of its kind and partake with them! ]
[ Buck Moth ;; Found all over oak forests, these moths get their name from their fly season lining up with the hunting season for deer. While the moths themselves are peaceful their caterpillars have many sharp points each able to causing a variety of discomforts. ]
[ For @overclocks @mastcrmarksman @shieldslinger and @pompedia ]
