This started as an inside joke, that I just took too far and I’m sorry but also not sorry. 🤷

The Lovers
My piece for the @sefikurafanzine! I really wanted to explore patterns this time last year and took a lot of inspiration from Klimt and Anna Sui’s pattern designs in Gankutsuou. It’s not perfect, but I learned a lot and had a great time making it!
I’m really glad that I got to work with and learn from so many talented creators on this zine, and would do it again in a heartbeat!
If you haven’t purchased a copy already, there will be some leftover copies for sale starting March 10!

commissioned @inutades a while back to draw the 💓beating heart boys💓 of my debut YA novel BEATING HEART BABY which came out 2 weeks ago...! ty steph for bringing santi & suwa into your style and the visual world :'')
some ambient book thoughts while i'm here... last week the chicago review of books (which...a city book review is next level charli @_@) had this to say about BHB:
i shouldn't have highlighted the smith/mapplethorpe part but i'm not going to take another screenshot. anyway the thing about good criticism is that it illuminates parts of your work that you didn't catch or understand on your own. i wrote mirroring/twinning foils (specifically shounen foils, sun/moon but also hard work/natural talent) into BHB but a lot of stuff, like the multifaceted portrait, came from "nowhere," i was just writing and it felt right, and no one asked me to change it and so i didn't.
but of courseeeeee i'm reading something that's making me think about art-making (BLUE PERIOD which is just... gutting me right now...) and i've been thinking about this section of the chicago review over and over again and sure, on the one hand, it's a very flattering writeup, but on the other hand, i have to start seriously thinking about how to keep writing with the level of nuance, intentional and otherwise, i want without asking the average reader to get a microscope, but i also selfishly wish... can't put that thought in writing.
but on the other other hand: following yatora's (and his peers' but more so his) "a-hA!" moments in BP is really tripping me out because so much of the stuff he's being told feels very basic, and i've scoffed a few times but then it's like, what would it have been like if i'd had any like any fiction training before embarking on a novel? both in a positive/helpful way but also perhaps not? i didn't think i'd be such a... not quite an outlier in but somewhat outside of the YA space as it exists now (vs historically/based on my own nostalgic recollection) but the more i observe it the less i'm convinced that this is where i can/should stay... and if this is what i can freestyle (with time of course and some serious on-the-job guidance), then i wonder what it'd be like to work with a material i'm already familiar with, so to speak...
anyway! BHB is randomly on sale through bookshop right now or you can order it from your favorite indie store. thank you to everyone who's listened along to the song of the summer 2022 so far; as mitski once sang "i love everybody because i love you" <3

“Tell me, what sort of music do you listen to?” Thorin asks him, raising an eyebrow. “Do you prefer glam or thrash?” “I—what? Simon & Garfunkel is my favorite band. I like The Smiths if I’m in a bit of a strop, Bowie if I’m feeling adventurous, I suppose."
