Hi! I was recently talking to a fellow epileptic about my difficulty to recognise faces (face blindness/prosopagnosia) and he told me that that was relatively common among epileptics. I'd never heard this and haven't since been able to find much information online about it either. was wondering if you or any of your followers have heard of this connection or even suffer from it themselves? Thanks!
Hey, thanks for your message! While I have heard of face blindness, I’ve never actually heard of this before. Personally I don’t struggle with face blindness. I have heard however, that it is not uncommon for people with autism to also have epilepsy and for people with autism struggling hard to recognise faces. However, these links don’t have to be causations, aside from the fact that I don’t know if you’re on the spectrum and don’t want to make any assumptions. Basically, these threww sometimes show up together, or only in pairs or never together. I think however, since epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain, that maybe epileptic people have a higher risk of experiencing face blindness? Given that our brains tend to get “toasted” (having a seizure), I think there may be a connection in how likely it is to develop face blindness, simply because certain areas of the brain may be damaged through a seizure. I found this article by healthline, which describes face blindness really well and I think it explains the possible link between face blindness and epilepsy as well “Prosopagnosia (face  blindness) is thought to be caused by abnormalities, impairment, or damage of a fold in the brain called the right fusiform gyrus.   (- i Think this explains it well. if this area gets damaged we are at risk of developing face blindness) This area in the brain plays an important role in coordinating the neural systems that affect facial memory and perception.Prosopagnosia can be caused by stroke, injury to the brain, or some neurodegenerative diseases. In some cases, people are born with face blindness as a congenital disorder. In these cases, there seems to be a genetic link, as it runs in families. Face blindness isn’t always a standard symptom of autism, but it seems to be more common in those with autism than in the general population. It’s theorized that face blindness may be part of what sometimes impairs the social development of people with autism. It’s important to note that face blindness is not caused by impaired vision, learning disabilities, or memory loss. It’s a specific problem with recognizing faces as opposed to a memory problem of failing to remember the person.“ PS: if people in the epilepsy tag can relate to face blindness, feel free to chime in and share your experience. I think experiencing struggles like these can feel very isolating, so it may help everyone to see, that they’re not alone with this. <3
