okay so here's the interaction timeline of the 2021 merch 'drama' between nicolas cantu and dream, as per requested:

dream made this tweet responding to general criticism after a new merch drop in march of 2021

nicolas cantu replied to the tweet with this

then they went back and forth a couple times, still just mostly harmless banter.

once dream got involved in the replies, his fanbase started relentlessly attacking nick about his recently deceased dog that he'd had for most of his life, and had just made an instagram post grieving over (this post is still up).

i don't have great ss' of the responses he garnered on the original merch tweet, but i've got a couple examples, more on the tamer end of what was said (these responses were in the several thousands).

this was happening whilst dream was still responding to nick, and he most definitely noticed the backlash nick received for his mostly harmless comment. however he didn't comment until after nick deactivated his twitter, and only made this comment on his private account, with very little reach.

it's notable that nick's initial comment, although insulting, wasn't an out of nowhere attack. he'd been on smp live and smp earth, and was an active member in the mcyt community, even playing a few minecraft mondays. he very often responded to tweets by creators in that space, in the same 'joking' manner.

dream didn't mention any contact with nick after this exchange, and it's unclear whether he followed up the situation with an apology or further messages in private.

nick would go on to occasionally make vague references to dream and his fans when he returned to twitter in 2022, but largely didn't mention him again until their more popular drama in 2023.

dream getting needlessly butthurt over ppl making low-stakes comments about his merch and fanbase isn't a new thing at ALL.

he loooooves to milk the nicolas cantu situation for sympathy points, but fails to ever mention that their whole 'beef' only started because nick called his merch bad on twitter.

(to which dream actively let his fanbase bully nick off the internet for upwards of a year, by harassing him about his recently deceased dog.)

i think at the end of the day that there’s really no reasoning with dream. he doesn’t believe that he’s in the wrong, he doesn’t think that a 16 year old can reasonably change their opinions once they turn 20, he doesn’t think it’s wrong to message the mother of someone your crossed with, he doesn’t think what he did to Caiti is wrong, he doesn’t think he’s misogynistic, he doesn’t think he’s egotistical, and he will never think anything different. i think that’s why he has such a hard time believing tommy has changed and thinks he’s just lying for clicks, it’s because he has not changed a bit and cannot comprehend that others do not have that issue

-tommy was close with bad people like logan paul and w*lbur when he was 16 so he must be bad cause people cant change
