Mom’s three-year death anniversary was last night. Walking through a grove of trees to work, I thought about her. I wondered what she would think of me working at xxx University, living “in her dream” of the countryside (which today I feel lucky to share). Hopefully she would be pleased. Just then a robin alighted on a branch and peered at me. To get a better look the redbreast alighted on a branch still closer. I was surprised this tiny palm-sized bird could make the entire branch shake. Indeed the bird seemed to be rocking on the branch, in a display of ilinx. I left some black bread I’m not certain she wanted. Instead of a plea for food it was a message. One of Mom’s familiars was a robin (often flying into her cottage for tea and cake). The message seemed to be that even a small bird can make a whole branch vibrate and thereby shake a tree. Enjoy where you land, take a rest, look around, and fly some more.

Turns out this may become my favorite book ever. Devereux’s concept of ‘areal culture pattern’ (as a refinement of ethos) helps make sense of my experiences living in Malaysia and Micronesia. I shall return to this as I dig further in.
