shoutout to all the kids with good people as bad parents. the parents who were sympathetic, honest and kind to everyone until you were the next in line. the parents who loved the entire family except you. the parents who preached about acceptance, warmth and kindness, but never offered it to you. the parents who were understanding to friends, cousins or siblings, but not to their own children. the cognitive dissonance is surreal, but i promise it is not a reflection of your own worth. you deserve more.

Tolkien's works: you cannot go home, war ends entire bloodlines, you are mourning the death of your brother alone, you dug into the earth and permanently scored the land, you cannot explain what you have been through, you cannot go home, "that wound will never fully heal. He will carry it the rest of his life", leaving the women behind does not save them, the young die first, you cannot go home, the parent will bury their child, you have lost the wives and you will never connect with them again, "how shall any tower withstand such numbers and such reckless hate?", you are not the same, you cannot go home, you can never go home, your father will only side with those he sees as worthy bloodlines and you cannot change his mind, it is more meaningful Not to kill, sometimes your sacrifice accomplishes nothing, you cannot go home

the thing that is really striking to me reading LOTR for the first time ever is the economy of language. in something like wheel of time, it takes the main characters like 200 pages to get out of their version of the shire, but here it definitely feels like 50 pages. in asoiaf, there might be a long, long discussion on an artifact of the world's history, the site of a long-past battle or event and why it might be relevant to the characters today, either actually or by metaphor (the knight of the laughing tree comes to mind) ; in LOTR, artifacts of the history might get a single mention in one line, conveying a whole host of subtext to those who already know (aragorn, the elves, gandalf), but not really relevant to perspective characters (mostly the hobbits), who might find out more if it becomes relevant or might not (pippin only realizing aragorn is literally the king of gondor at the beginning of return of the king because gandalf was like "keep your mouth shut about it with denethor" made me laugh out loud). terry pratchett always took extra time to make jokes, grrm spends pages on food descriptions, robert jordan once took an entire page to describe elayne's clothes when she was getting ready for a bath, but with LOTR, there's this feeling of a whole iceberg of lore passing just under the bow of the ship of the main plot, evoking the themes of ages long-passed fallen out of memory without ever sidetracking the narration away from the main direction of the story

Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong generation, and by that I mean I should have been born early enough to have been part of the Tolkien fandom in the early 2000s when everyone and their mother seemed to be writing feral fanfiction about Elrond and Isildur having a tasty toasty time tupping each other in the fires of Mt. Doom 😔

Thinking about all the parents of the Fellowship during the events of the War of the Ring.

Thinking about Saradoc & Esmeralda Brandybuck and Paladin & Eglantine Took, none of whom have any idea where their sons are.

Thinking about the Gaffer, seeing a creepy hooded Man asking for the whereabouts of his son’s boss and then hearing that said son’s boss’ house has been raided and his son is nowhere to be found.

Thinking about Bilbo, knowing that his dear nephew is going into danger because of his own actions so long ago and might never return.

Thinking about Glóin, having to come home to his wife in Erebor and tell her their son is facing life-or-death danger for the first time.

Thinking about Elrond, the wise part of him knowing what must be done vs. the paternal part berating himself for sending his beloved foster son into such peril and wondering if he’ll ever be able to look his daughter in the eye again if her fiancé doesn’t come back.

Thinking about Thranduil, finding out that his only child has entered the war with the very same enemy that destroyed his father and 2/3 of his army.

Thinking about Denethor, trying to protect and defend his entire kingdom while constantly wondering why his favorite son still hasn’t come home.

Thinking about all those parents, having to spend month after month with absolutely no idea if they will ever see their sons again.

You just know Boromir is just cheering from the grave when Faramir lets Sam and Frodo go.

Because Boromir of all people understands why he hesitates and why he originally trys to take Frodo and the ring to his father. Because they had both seen the absolute fucking terrors of the war and the effects its had on Gondor. And honestly Boromir will spend all of forever regretting his actions no matter how many times Frodo says its ok.

Which is why he is so fucking proud of his baby brother. His brother who did what he could not. His brother who saved the world. His brother who looked after Gondor in his absence, and stood aside for the rightful king of Gondor. His brother who he loves so fucking much and hes so proud of.
