Okay, so, fucking PSA. Please read if you're interested in helping either Robert Kurvitz, the Disco Elysium team, or the Internet Archive:
DO NOT CLAIM THAT KURVITZ UPLOADED A COPY OF DISCO ELISYUM ON THE INTERNET ARCHIVE, REPORT THE UPLOAD, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
Internet Archive:
I'm a person that enjoys community projects like the Internet Archive. They hold crucial positions in public knowledge and do not deserve to be labeled "piracy dens" and do not deserve the legal difficulties associated. By sharing copies of software whose copyright holders still actually care instead of reporting them, you are putting the Internet Archive at risk. Once the Internet Archive gets sued into oblivion, you will no longer have the wayback machine, thousands of copies of scans of rare books and boxes will be lost, and endless piles of abandonware trapped in long outdated storage mediums and standards will no longer be used again. And even worse, once corporations learn that legal pressure is enough to take out public knowledge, they will press down hard on services like the ones Wikimedia offers (that includes wikipedia if you're unaware). Say goodbye to the crowdsourced knowledge of old, and hello to corporate refined knowledge, likely alot of which is AI generated.
Robert Kurvitz
Robert Kurvitz has a very poor relationship with ZA/UM and thus, it doesn't take long to tie a motive to him publishing pirated copies of DE. And as he's the one with the motive and not Internet Archive, it's entirely possible legal action could be pointed at Kurvitz instead or worse, also. And that's where the problem occurs... people keep claiming the file was uploaded by Kurvitz himself. But that's a claim made by the uninformed. The way the Internet Archive works is that each file uploaded is primarily credited to their original authors with credit to the uploader placed to the side. However, people sharing the file are claiming that, due to a misunderstanding, Kurvitz is the one who uploaded the file. When in reality, it was a person using a pseudonym. This simple mistake can undoubtedly prove disastrous.
The DE Team
There's no doubt that the team behind DE were immensely fucked over. And we truly need to fight against that scumbaggery. So, how do you support the DE team? First off, don't pay for DE. And if you're not willing to go to the greynet, just don't fucking play the game. I'm sorry, but hosting pirated games on honest sites like the IA just causes more trouble than needed. Also, please, do not share links to pirated copies and more importantly, don't try claiming the devs endorse piracy. Even if they do. Corporations are little shits that like to sue you over everything.
I don't know if any of that makes any sense. But thank you anyways for reading this.

Okay, so hear me out, playing Disco Elysium as an Eastern European just hits differently. I mean it makes sense, because the creators are Estonian. To me it’s mostly due to the political aspect of the game, but also the aesthetic side of it.
Living in a country that after the second WW was under a soviet regime or even part of the USSR it’s inevitable to form an opinion on communism and I think it’s a lot more nuanced and personal than that of people who do not have this experience either from tales told by their parents, grandparents or from learning about it in history lessons in great detail.
It’s a very polarizing topic, since while it had many, many flaws, I also heard people say that things were much more simple back then (ie. no unemployment, little to no homelessness). That being said we’re also aware of the terror, the tyranny and the deep sown fear that was present in these times, with executions, betrayals… terrifying things.
To add more to it, something that punched me in the gut was the Coalition’s part in the game, an ally that could help, one that has the power to change things, make them better, one that has great and hopeful slogans and at the same time doesn’t make a real difference. It knows about the problems, promises a better future, but turns away (because it doesn’t want to cause more bloodshed, which is understandable, but still…). It resembling the Western nations after the second WW really shaped my experience with the game.
The feeling of being at the mercy of much bigger powers, of having to rely on others to help with the problems of your own country/city is I think something that Eastern Europeans all experienced even if it was just second hand.
As for the aesthetic part of the game, I know that poverty exists in all countries, but the way it is shown in Disco Elysium is again very similar to what I see every day, the way old houses have bullet holes in them and most of the time it doesn’t even register to you, the way these things could be mended, but people don’t have the money or the energy to do so and the city is just full of open wounds, some of which have been there for decades (or even half a century) made it feel like reality.
Also alcoholism, which we see quite a few characters struggle with. Again I know it’s common in every country, but probably due to their socio-economical state, in 2021 out of the 10 countries most affected by alcoholism (by percentage), 8 were under the control of/part of the USSR and were governed by communist/socialist parties after the second WW, so it feels (sometimes a bit too) close to home.
All in all I’m glad, that a game developed by Estonian people became so well-known and loved, it also makes happy that a piece of media finally captures the things I see and feel in my day to day life, not like any other I’ve consumed (probably because most of them are from the USA or the UK…), it’s a real treat.

btw we do *get* that the worldbuilding of DE parallels the character's arc right? We understand that, right? That Our Guy commits all but a sliver of himself to the oblivion of amnesia in a moment where the only alternative he could see was suicide. And at the other end of that tragic attempt at self-annihilation he gets the chance to reinvent himself and overcome the longstanding, persistent habits that brought him to the cliff's edge to begin with. And that the world itself is presented as approaching an equally definitive precipice, with one of the richest characters in the cast even remarking that Capital is dead, and everything else being 20-odd years away from being swallowed by the pale
And we understand that the pale is forgetting, right? Right? It's informational entropy applied to the world, facts and events and places and memories being destructured and obliderated, reduced to an indistinct soup of whispers, past present and future. That it emerges from humanity's collective inability to imagine a future beyond moralist capitalism, and that this inability to see the horizon inevitably metastazises into Mesque's accelerationist nihilism that ultimately destroys the world. [starts shaking you] WE UNDERSTAND THAT RIGHT??
That the game's splash screen is a view from the bay of Revachol, from the deserter's island. And we know what it shows, right? Revachol, in the distance. And beyond that what? A horizon? No! It shows Pale. Because that's his perspective. Because he has abandoned all hope, lost all sight of the future and has committed to self-annihilation. For him the entroponetic collapse is imminent. We see that, don't we?
That the game is a thesis on hope. That the world has the chance to reinvent itself from the precipice of oblivion just like Harry does, and that the only thing that can do that is imagining the future. A future. Any future, and making it. Piece by piece, day by day, committing to it, and refusing to give in to despair and nihilism. We understand, don't we, that there must be no truce with the f-
you know what, nevermind...
