Hate is a virus. Love is the cure. This is my spin on the latest recent events to have disrupted our lives. My husband and children, family, and many friends are Asian so recent tragedies have hit close to home. My heart and love goes out to those personally affected by all the hatred still lingering about that has taken the lives of some and intimidated too many others. Love is an omnipotent force that takes many forms and acts as the ultimate sentinel in combatting its adversary, hatred, taking attention and thus power away from it. In light of recent events, I’m focusing on this Love that helps heal during times of crisis while working towards prevention as well. Just like hatred, Love spreads. So, at least for me, it’s a personal responsibility to always embody and imbue LOVE into every part of life, art, thoughts, self-care, and especially interactions with others, knowing that the more Love spreads the closer we get to long sought-after peace and balance in this world. Whether we express our Love through charity, support, art, appreciation, and more, as long as we are emitting Love we are on the right track. Be well, be safe. So proud of this one! 🤩🤩🤩 It was International Women’s Day this week and while pondering women and femininity, I started thinking about the latest, upcoming generation of women. And then it made me think of someone in particular very dear to me, my goddaughter who just turned 16. So I wanted to pour my heart into a piece that captured her awesomeness for this special occasion. A beautiful, talented, creative girl I got watch grow from a little baby to now a grown young woman. Getting emotional now lol 😭😂 I am one damn proud Tita (Filipino for “auntie” ☺️) For this piece I took her affinity for historic Japanese art relics, such as Hokusai’s “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa” and old Japanese god visages—like what feudal era samurais wore as masks—and turned them into the grand motif that frames her in this portrayal. Came out pretty good vs my expectations going in, if I do say so myself 💅lol Here’s to growing women (and artsy gals 🎨) everywhere! An oil painting I made years back while in school. Gesso the board then woosah out to each paint stroke. Working with oils is so different and really nice for blending colors, though this one is simple with very little shading. In this one, I wanted to capture soft, simple, youthful beauty laying down very basic features in a portrait of a young woman with a gentle, somewhat wistful smile. A work in progress... I live a very busy lifestyle so oftentimes I’ll find myself starting a piece then coming back to it bit by bit later on. This time, I started inking my sketch. It’s always scary laying those first lines down when going to ink because there’s no undo button 😆 gotta commit! A lot of shaky lines here using my Micron #1 pen. Native American heritage and influence has always been prevalent throughout my life since my youth. Watching ceremonial dances at pow wows and people wearing cultural garb are fond memories for me that I’ve often leaned on during difficult times in life, even to this day. Reverent connection to nature and profound mysticism about the native cultures were always so alluring, especially from an art perspective. If I were to personally peg anything as a recognizable style of mine, it’d be the use of feathers 🪶, reference to Native American ornaments. I’d often find myself doodling female figures with feathers adorning their hair or just feathers as hair, as in this graphic I made years back. I’d been working as a fashion graphic designer in NYC across the street from the Empire State Bulding, always off on my own feeling like a lone wolf. Even though it was as urban as it could get, I always needed to keep that bit of earthen/cultural connection with me. As class mom to my daughter’s kindergarten, I wanted to do something special for the kids’ first year of school. So I doodled and stickerized them!! I drew each child and printed sheets of stickers for them to use on their last day of school. The teacher told me they LOVED them and drew scenes on construction paper to place all their sticker-classmates on ☺️ This is one of the few illustrated things I made during these past years cuz doing anything outside of parenting a bunch of munchkins is TOUGH! If I wanted to do anything, like my art, my best (and sometimes only) bet was incorporating it as a functional part of my parenting/school game, like these stickers for school. Otherwise, bubkis lol. I love chibi style characters and urban art when some of my best buddies asked me to help create some art in #kidrobot fashion, I was all for it! After a #munny-themed wedding filled with custom hand-painted munnies (by a bunch of us friends), came a Kidrobot baby shower. I’ve been doing a lot recently to hone in and refine what “my style” is as part of artistic self-discovery. It’s the struggle of an artist to find what defines and distinguishes them, so I’ve been doing a lot of reflection, a lot of reviewing old artwork, seeing where I need to improve and expand on, and taking notes. Looking at old works like this one. This was during my #WorldofWarcraft days almost a decade ago! 😆 I really enjoyed bringing to life one of my online characters (functionless armor design aside lol). Art technique was pretty abstract on this one. One day I’ll make a similar piece that more accurately reflects proper anatomy and lighting aspects.
