the  ball’s  over ,  her  cheeks  and  neck  matching  the  colour  of  her  dress from  the  whirlwind  of  dancing .  she’s  had  fun ,  her  eyes  never  leaving  him  for  very  long  regardless  of  who  lead  the  next  waltz .  queenie’s  wanted  to  dance  with  him  all  evening ,  to  magic  a  little  nat  king  cole  into  existence  and  teach  these  children  some  culture . 

but  she  doesn’t .  she’s  leaned  against  the  wall  when  he  sweeps  over ,  she  wonders  where  he  learned  to  be  so  enticing .

he’s  kind ,  most  people  don’t  believe  it .  queenie  knows  the  truth ,  knows  that  the  inside  of  his  chest  is  plastered  with  more  hurt  than  she  has  space  to  hide .  his  tears  have  streamed  down  her  face  so  many  times —  she’d  like  very  much  to  recall  how  another  part  of  him  tastes . 

so  she  leans  in ,  presses  her  lips  to  his  ear  and  speaks  like  a  night  breeze .  her  voice  is  an  exhale .

he  lets  her  take  his  hand ,  and  for  a  moment  it’s  almost  as  if  she  might  let  him  do  as  she  says .  but  the  dark  sky  outside ,  the  chance  for  fresh  air  and  him  has  her  nearly  rushing  past  him .  her  laugh’s  one  of  pure  joy ,  a  perfect  end  to  a  perfect  night. 

neither  of  them  get  very  far . 

queenie  pushes  him  against  a  pillar  outside  the  door ,  and  she’s  never  been  one  to  waste  his  time .

she  knows  better  than  to  be  playing  with  things  like  rouge ,  but  she  rather  likes  the  way  his  eyes  ( so ,  so  blue )  widen .  her  blush  renders  any  colour  she’s  applied  absolutely  useless . 

her  hands  are  clasped  in  front  of  her ,  she  looks  distraught  and  yet  pleased .  out  of  an  apron  for  the  first  time  she’s  known  him ,  her  eyes  glow  green  in  the  firelight  and  her  mother’s  dress  finally  fits  her .

she  says ,  as  if  it’s  that  easy .  to  her ,  with  all  her  infinite  carelessness ,  it  is .  iesha  walks  towards  him ,  her  hands  settle  on  either  side  of  his  face .  leaning  in ,  she  presses  a  kiss  to  the  corner  of  his  mouth .  perhaps  she’s  more  delicate  than  can  be  appreciated ,  but  her  desire  to treat  him  gently  outweighs  her  idea  that  he  may  not  appreciate  being  handled  with  care .

she  barely  even  has  to  think .  the  shattered  rose - shaped  teacup  springs  back  to  perfectly  intact  in  an  instant  with  a  short  wave  of  her  wand .  there’s  a  small  chip  in  the  handle  but  hardly  anything  noteworthy . 

queenie  looks  horrified  at  the  notion —  has  she  done  something  to  make  him  afraid  of  her .  her  face  contorts  into  shock  as  she  quickly  shakes  her  head .  her  curls  bounce  around  her  cheeks . 

❛   mercy  lewis !!  get  mad  at’cha ?  not  a  chance ,  honey .  it’s  just  a  little  chip ,  look  a  little  closer .   ❜

she  stands  next  to  him ,  holding  out  the  teacup  and  running  her  finger  over  the  crack  down  the  side .  she  turns  it  and  shows  him  another .
