Wow! Such a pretty tricolor hognose! It's a shame they don't live super long otherwise I'd probably get one.
Erebus, our tricolored hognose shed today just before eating. Decided to show this handsome man off once again. Angriest pancake is the prettiest today.

hello! I've decided to take another little tumblr break. I've been super busy with school. I've been having a hard time just keeping up with pet chores recently and tumblr isn't my top priority. When I come back I believe I'm gonna rethink my posting schedule because it seems to not currently be sustainable, alternatively I might make some of my posts smaller and do more photo dumps of the kids or maybe a single fun fact in a post. I have some reblogs queued up. I'm going to be not posting excluding those for a few weeks. Hopefully over spring break I'll queue up some posts and get started again! I really love the reptile community here. I may not be a big account but I really appreciate the support, every like and reblog makes me smile <3 I will likely still be infrequently checking tumblr so I'll still reply to comments, DMs and maybe ask bin :)

Bearded Dragons aren't Beginner Lizards
It is WILD to me that people claim Bearded Dragons make great first reptiles and/or are super easy. While they are hardy they're definitely a more intermediate species imo. First they get BIG which means they need a big enclosure. 4x2x2' is regarded as the bare minimum for bearded dragons with 5x3x3' enclosures being pushed as the new recommended minimum. In addition to being large they're also active! They get 18"+ as adults which is big. With a 4x2x2' and even 5x3x3' enclosure they need regular outside enclosure time as even a 5x3x3 is fairly small and doesn't really allow for zoomies. Their big size also means their bites can do some serious damage. And we're recommending them as pets to young children?? Who don't have proper animal ettiquette? And beginner reptile keepers who are bound to mess up when handling them and stress them potentially to the point of biting? As adults they need to be fed daily which is rare in reptiles. And a decent chunk of work if you're making all their salads fresh. They also need extremely high basking temps of 105F+ which can be difficult to achieve depending on the bulb. They also require a high % UVB. They're a good chunk more work than most other lizards being recommended for newer keepers, able to cause significantly more harm and need a very large enclosure compared to other recommended lizards for beginners. To be clear I'm not saying NO ONE should keep bearded dragons or that they're an advanced species. I'm not even saying no one should get a bearded dragon as their first lizard. All I'm saying is people need to stop pushing them as excellent lizards for beginners because they're really not.

Leioheterodon Appreciation Post
Most reptile people have heard of Heterodon nasicus, the Plains Hognose Snake (sometimes incorrectly referred to as the Western Hognose Snake) However it seems very few people know about the genus Leioheterodon which has some of the absolute coolest hognose snake species! Leioheterodon also known as Malagasy hognose snakes is a genus of snakes only found on the Madagascar islands. It contains 3 known species. While Leioheterodon does posses the signature upturned rostrum in hognose snakes it's much less noticeable compared to Plains Hognoses.
Leioheterodon madagascariensis - The Malagasy Giant Hognose Snake, also called the Madagascar Giant Hognose Snake. They're large compared to Plains Hognoses usually growing to around 4'-6' (130-180cm). They're the most well known of the Leioheterodon genus with a handful of keepers keeping and breeding them.

Leioheterodon modestus - The Blonde Hognose Snake I've also seen them called the Madagascan Golden Hognose Snake. Looking around I can't find much info on these guys. I see a few sources but none that are trusted and most sources have little to no information anyways. These are however very pretty and showy hognose snakes. They are quite rare to find captive bred in the hobby with most available individuals being wild caught.

Leioheterodon geayi - Speckled Hognose Snake also known as the Madagascan Speckled Hognose Snake, Malagasy Speckled Hognose Snake, Reticulated Hognose Snake, and Geay's Hognose Snake is probably my personal favorite from the genus. They get 3-4.5' (90-140cm) as adults, a fairly similar size to the Plains Hognose Snake. They have this stunning speckling pattern with high contrast. Like the Blonde Hognose they are rarely captive bred and often wild caught. They're a species I hope to work with in the nearish future!

(image credit lll reptiles, I didn't want to use their photo since they are a mill and wc farm but I couldn't find another speckled as nice as this one from a quick search)
Hopefully you now have an appreciation for the weird and wonderful Leioheterodon! Please remember to purchase your pets responsibly and not buy mill bred or wild caught animals as pets.
