There's this yt channel called Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky and their animations are so good that our quantum chem prof used to show some of them to us during lectures (it's how I discovered this channel!). These videos are seriously great but I'm watching the one on quantum entanglement rn and I just. I just can't. There's cats in it observing the particles. These cats do show up in other videos sometimes (you know. Quantum mechanics. Cats. Schrodinger's cat. Ha ha.) but they just seem to play such an important role in this one I can't stop laughing at them snhskjsks

You're pretty good at searching here and there, but there's a lot more to academic research. This is why we put together this free, self-guided course!
Because three is the magic number (look it up!), the course is made up of three modules of three short lessons and three sets of practice quizzes. Try it try it try it!

15/30 Days of Fall
Song of the day: Mixed Messages - Tom Cardy
Day 15: You’ve finished the half of the challenge (for now as more prompts will be added), so let’s look back at your goals. Are you getting closer to accomplishing them? I hope so :D I'm at least getting closer to the end of classes as time passes!
Got some stuff done today!
Read two research articles
Had a meeting with my research team
Completed revised literature analysis
Completed revised personal statement
Turned in my post-lab
But for tomorrow:
Write out more of presentation
Chemistry quiz + practice
Pick a research article about drug synthesis

13/30 Days of Fall
Song of the day: Eyes on Me - Paranoid DJ (yes again, it's on loop)
Day 13: Which one do you prefer: Digital devices and online platforms or notebooks and books? And why? Physical notebook - for doing work/while I'm in class (most convenient, I like my handwriting as well :D) Glean - record lectures (and get transcripts/time audio to the slides) Obsidian - making official notes (ability to connect notes to each other and there's a bunch of community plug-ins
Yipeee, I've done a little bit
Returned book to library
Bought my train ticket
Wrote out 1/5th of my presentation
Practiced calculus for an hour
But for tomorrow:
Write out more of presentation
Skim over the four research articles I was assigned
Complete revised literature analysis

12/30 Days of Fall
Song of the day: Eyes on Me - Paranoid DJ
Day 12: Do you have any studying methods you use? If so, share them with us (please *sobs*)! Using class to absorb material then after class to synthesize and organize it! Though for actual methods, I guess teaching people? I don't study much, but I do tutor. If stuff doesn't make sense, I still try to act like I'm explaining it to someone else and any natural questions I have are questions that they're asking me
Yipeee, I've done a little bit
Added transitions to my neurobio presentation
Presented (a different presentation) in my one class
But for tomorrow:
Return book to library
Start writing out neurobio script and really practice it

11/30 Days of Fall
Song of the day: Inertia - AJR
Day 11: Which one of your courses do you like the most? And the one you just can’t like no matter what you do? Damn, this is sort of difficult since I'm taking pretty general courses. I guess I like chemistry the most and I like forum the least (literally a random person talks for an hour and that's the entire class), but granted, that class is just pass/fail so it's really not too bad
I've started playing spiritfarer again, I love that game so much. But I also got some stuff done :D
Outlined my neurobiology presentation
Finished making notes on recent chemistry chapter
But for tomorrow:
Make notes on integration by substitution
Return book to library
Add transitions to my neurobio presentation
Read 15 minutes of a research article, noting new vocabulary

10/30 Days of Fall
Song of the day: The Show that Never Ends - LongestSoloEver. Or3o
Day 10: What is your favorite thing about your major? Why? Hmm, I guess how it is able to tie into other things? Like how molecules will be interacting at such a microscopic level, just to be part of your proteins or particles jiggling over in physics and all of that stuff. (even history has some application with carbon dating!)
YAYYYY THE FLOODING IN MY DORM STOPPED!! I ended up having a really productive day!
Made first draft personal statement
Completed chemistry quiz and practice
Completed post-lab (just have to check it with my lab partner)
Read about gas chromatography for 15 minutes
Wrote general chemistry notes for 1 hour
There's not much I have to do tomorrow, but I still wanna try to get stuff done:
Outline neurobiology presentation
Return library book
Ready about gas chromatography for 30 minutes
Finish making notes on recent chemistry chapter

8/30 Days of Fall
Song of the day: SAD (Clap Your Hands) - Young Rising Sons
Day 8: What do you like to drink while you study? You can share the recipe if you want! BROOO, I AM WAY TOO DEHYDRATED TO ANSWER THISSSS. But aside from not drinking anything, I tend to drink water since it's the most available, but sometimes I'll drink root beer or monster energy drinks (strawberry kiwi flavor :D)
Completed my chem exam!! It wasn't too bad! But ahah- I've missed a few days of this challenge because my dorm has been flooding ._.
Granted I'm fine! It just makes it a bit more stressful with trying to get it fixed and whatnot.
2 loads of laundry
Met up with my advisor
Roughly finished Neurobiology presentation
Completed pre-lab
But for tomorrow:
Make a crappy personal statement (to improve on later)
Outline neurobio presentation
Read about gas chromatography for 15 minutes

7/30 Days of Fall
Song of the day: Mixed Messages - Tom Cardy
Day 7: What is the best place to study for you in autumn? Generally I like to study at the library, but that's more of a "summer spot" for me since I really need some extra social interaction. In fall I tend to just stay in my room though, it's just more convenient tbh
Ughh, my chem exam is tomorrow but I feel a bit okay with the content
Did most of my pre-lab (just pre-lab questions and notes left)
Studied about 5 hours for my chemistry exam (some listening to my teacher, some tutoring other people)
Organized some of my digital notes
Reviewed gas chromatography
But for tomorrow:
Load of laundry
Form a gameplan to study GC (meeting up with advisor)
30 minutes on Neurobio presentation
30 minutes to either write chemistry notes / new research vocabulary

6/30 Days of Fall
Song of the day: Business Man - Tom Cardy
Day 6: Are there other languages you learn besides your native language? If so, which ones? Spanish! I started studying in middle school and now I feel a bit comfortable in it. I'm not fluent per se because I struggle to do exact translations, but I can generally pick up written input :3 I've tried studying other languages, but Spanish has rotted my brain so I tend to read foreign words with a Spanish accent sldfj But I might try to pick up Japanese again in the future!
Today I was pretty restless, but I at least got to hang out with some friends and get some stuff done :]
Turned in post-lab
Studied 45 minutes for my chem exam
Annotated my neurobiology article for 30 minutes
Started reading a research article for my projects
Ughhh, I feel like I have soooo many knowledge deficits for my research. I think I'm gonna start actively studying organic chemistry again so some of it makes more sense. But for tomorrow:
Do my pre-lab
Study 2 hours for my chemistry exam (!!)
Pick out some resources to study organic
Load of laundry

non-basic study tips ive derived myself as a stem major lol
going from easiest to hardest to implement
i have very big trouble with focusing and interest so a lot of this will relate to attention retention
- look up the problems on your past tests. chances are your lecturer is consistently pulling them from 1-3 sources (true for most intro classes)
-practice with a timer since day 0 of learning about a new topic. this will prevent you from short circuiting on the exam and forgetting all about the topic you've studied for hours
-as you are going through a problem, mumble your thought process as if you are ochem tutor 2.0
- if you can write in numerous languages, try taking lecture notes in a language other than the one they are provided in - this will force you to think critically about the material you are writing down
-leave. work. at the work table. dont think about assignments when you are spending time with friends or family.
-in general, the intensity of my background noise is inversely proportional to my stimulation levels usually i try to go ambient noise -> lofi/instrumentals -> study vlogs -> music with lyrics however, if you can take a break instead of listening to music that will make you more restless, it is better to do that
-usually, the boredom from practicing something boring does not feel as bad as realizing you have understudied that topic. persevere. you can do it!

As a former nerdy child (and current nerdy uni student) I love how you don't grow out of it, I love that ✨real scientists✨ remain genuine nerds: there's a sheet of paper stuck to the wall above the coffee machine in my internship mentor's office that shows an increasing linear function where x = amount of consumed coffee and f(x) = number of published papers. The researchers here regularly joke about electrons and syntheses and whatnot. Internship mentor told us all today about a science meme he'd seen the other day. It's amazing :')
