The Great Orion Nebula Is Even Greater Than You Know
“The Orion Nebula is laden with protoplanetary disks: future solar systems. Visible light views showcase stars, emission, and reflection nebulae. Infrared views see through the dust, revealing ongoing regions of star formation. Next door is Messier 43, separated from the main nebula by a single large dust lane. All this is included within the greater Orion Molecular Cloud Complex.”
When you think of the Orion Nebula, you probably think about that small, fuzzy region located just beneath Orion’s belt. But did you realize that’s only where the greatest amount of nebulosity and the richest new stars are found? For hundreds of light-years in all directions, enormous amounts of gas and dust are present, leading to a myriad of beautiful astronomical features. Meanwhile, all of this is cosmically new, with Orion’s oldest stars coming in at only 12 million years old: 0.2% the age of the Sun.
Come take a tour of arguably the most visually spectacular region visible from Earth’s night sky: the great Orion Molecular Cloud Complex!
