Happy belated Birthday @audrainautomuseum 🎂 Here are some of my favorite displays over the years, but the good memories you’ve provided are far too numerous for one post. As the boyfriend (at the time) of a URI graduate, I knew I’d be taking trips up every few years. That all changed in 2015. It had been a couple years since our last visit to Newport. We had breakfast at Annie’s and decided to take a stroll down Bellevue afterwards before driving home to NJ. As we were walking, I saw my then girlfriend walking awkwardly alongside me, as if to hide something from my sight. She knew what would happen if I spotted an automobile, as we seem to randomly come across one on almost every trip we take. Since that first trip we make a point to visit at least twice per year. Another shot in the parking garage... Because I need to acknowledge that this brilliant machine drove from NJ to RI and back last weekend, and from NJ to VT and back this weekend, and she did it while looking spectacular! I haven’t washed, spray waxed, or in any way touched this car since Friday the 2nd. A real testament to @ammonyc products! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again... @bmw hit it out of the park with the E28. From cruising the thruway for hours to having fun on a beach or mountain road, this car does it all. One of my favorite shots from yesterday’s @audrainconcours Tour d’Elegance. The people here are gathered around a gorgeous Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce, but not for the reason you may think. A family was walking by with young children and their daughter, maybe 3 years old, ran up to my car and started touching it, running her fingers down the door. The mother shouted, “No don’t touch the cars!” I admit my OCD kicked in and my first thought was to yell. But then I remembered the Tour d’Elegance last year, when a Mercedes 300 SL owner screamed at a kid for touching their car. I thought: are these kids going to grow up as car enthusiasts if one of their first experiences with a car is a negative one? “That’s okay, cars are meant to be enjoyed,” I said, trying to brighten the car experience for this young girl. But when they got to the next car, this Alfa, the owner did something rarely seen in the car community. He offered to let these small kids, all four of them, sit in his car. The parents were hesitant, but he said, “It’s okay, it’s just a car.” Seeing the smiles on these kids’ faces made the day, and I’m sure it’s a memorable moment that they will always remember fondly. This is what’s missing in a huge part of the car community. Cars are meant to be driven and experienced, that was the lesson I learned after last year’s @audrainautomuseum Concours d’Elegance. This year I learned that cars are also meant to be enjoyed by everyone, and that our actions today can directly impact tomorrow’s car culture. So are you helping or hindering the next generation from getting excited about cars?
