Rewatch Husbands of River Song 1, 2

To recap, River has just finished saying:

“The Doctor is not stupid enough or sentimental enough, and he is certainly not in love enough to find himself standing in it with me!”

And then River pauses to take a breath and is suddenly

very aware.

Of someone

stupid enough

standing next to her.

You can see the moment River begins to have an inkling.

As Twelve continues to look at River with all the love and sentiment River claimed the Doctor never had for her.

And the penny drops…

And I’m just – look at how steady Twelve is, how comfortable he is in standing still and being seen.

(As the music swells in the background)

River is for a micro second, still trying to grasp as

Twelve says, softly, with all the love in his hearts, “Hello, sweetie.”

This is the greatest and sweetest endearment callback that started decades back and circling into this earned, affectionate moment.

Seriously, the most romantic moment in all of Modern Who I’ve seen and still standing number 1 to this day.

People watch tragedies on purpose. People watch stories about hope on purpose. Pulling the rug on the narrative promise of your story and switching tracks isn’t clever or interesting, it’s just lying about the genre.

If Midsummer Night’s Dream ended with everyone brutally dying, I’d feel kind of betrayed. If Macbeth ended with everyone getting happily married, I’d also feel kind of betrayed.

There is nothing more bittersweet and heartbreaking than a character who is deeply in love with another but entirely convinced that despite their current romantic relationship (established or not) that they won’t get a happily ever after because they aren’t good enough and the person they love will realize that and leave them but they aren’t bitter or angered by this idea but calmly resigned. Like they love that person so much they’re okay with just being a placeholder for someone better, as long as they can stay by that person’s side despite believing one day they’ll be replaced.

Kissing tropes that are giving me life right now

- when A grabs the B’s face and says “please - please” before devouring B’s mouth without waiting for a response

-  pulling back just for a second to try to regain control before realizing they don’t want to be in control and diving back in

- person A missing the first time they lean in and just catching the corner of B’s mouth and waaaaaaaaaiting for B to come in and fix it

- tender eyelid and nose kisses before finally sealing the deal.

- that moment where the world just stops and A stares into B’s eyes and they know they shouldn’t, but they kiss anyway

- having to lean against each other when they pull back because the world is spinning and they just. cannot. breathe. yet.

- person A realizing that they were just kind of joking when they kissed B but then holy shit do they ever get sucked into it and when A finally pulls back they are absolutely stunned by B

- foreheads pressed into each others, sharing breath, until they dive back in for more because they thought they were done but they so were not.

- that ‘oh hell is this actually happening?’ moment before it actually happens.

- the desperate pant/groan of surrender when either party knows that they are sooooooo done
