Week 1: 5/7/22
My first successful bowl. Now I must let her dry until she becomes what they call “leather hard” and then the next step would be to trim.

Week 1: 5/7/14
My instructor, Dorandy, showing me how to remove my piece from the potters wheel safely. This part makes me so nervous. Happy she was there to help!

Week 1: 5/7/22
My second throw of the day wasn't as successful as my first. I nde the bottom too thin and when I went to wire it off of the wheel the bottom ripped open. It's a learning process!

Week 1: 5/7/22
My first throw!
This clay was way more gritty than I expected it to be. I felt like my hands were being exfoliated while forming this lol. Nevertheless I love how pottery is a hobby that is stimulating, but also requires so much focus and stillness.
Things I need to work on: Opening the clay and raising the walls, but that’ll come with practice my instructor tells me.

Week 1: 5/7/22
First step: Wedging the clay
You remove and wedge the amount of clay you need for your piece. Different items require different amounts of clay. A standard throw is 1.5lbs-2lbs.
Pictured:
Weighing scales - used to measure the amount of clay you need.
Wire - Used to cut through clay, either during wedging of when removing its from wheel.
Clay - When preparing clay for a throw you cut the clay into cube shaped pieces to measure out the amount you need.

Miyazaki teaches us that learning is a lifelong metamorphosis; a continuous act of trying, failing, growing, becoming, and searching for moving castles.

5.2.22
So, I did it! I signed up for those pottery classes I’ve been contemplating since the last pottery class I took sometime in April of last year. I feel the fear but I’m doing it anyways. I’m ready to learn/ practice something new. I miss the feeling of being in a class and receiving instruction. I’m especially excited for this because it’s for something creative. I always said when I was younger I would invest in these kinds of endeavors for myself. So here I am, fulfilling my own wishes. Wish me luck.
Classes start May 7th, 10am. This course is 4 weeks.
See you then!
