i can’t stop thinking about how an oath can be a burden it can be an obligation but in the right hands it is a benediction and it is a privilege.

i also cannot stop thinking about how charles carries a whole populace on the shoulders of his dream. there are people who seek glory primarily for themselves and charles wants glory for the institution of ferrari, for the people who work on the car and for the people who believe in his dream. his dream of glory is to be remembered as the man who brought a championship back to ferrari more than as a formula 1 world champion.

anyway i’m a romantic and i think it comes across in the way i think of charles cos he’s also just a guy with a dog. i need to remember that before i accidentally start a cult in his name

i feel like i’ve recently positioned this blog as pro-charles staying at ferrari and i wanna clarify that this is a) heavy cope cos that’s definitely what he’s doing for minimum one more season and b) not completely the point

my point is largely just that i want charles to do whatever HE wants to do, and i’ll support that. and most importantly, if winning his wdc(s) with ferrari means more to him than just winning a wdc, and that’s his only goal, i will support him until the end times. charles sold me the dream - and very, very few athletes hold the ability to do that. they tell a story with every second that they’re out there, and charles is that storyteller.

and the thing is, charles does this about 80% of the season. at least 19 weekends out of 24 he is making us dream in a way some athletes only accomplish once in their careers.

there was this test match series between india and australia that is colloquially referred to as the Gabba. in 2021, this series went down to the fucking wire and it was a whole shitshow for india where our entire “A” squad of champions was out for a variety of reasons (injuries, paternity leave, idk) and the B team was just unprepared for the series to have been going this poorly. one of the guys in our batting order didn’t even have a team kit; he had to BORROW one. and honestly the series was written off by the fans - we lost this one, couldn’t defend the ring. there was no hope.

i want to give you a play by play of this match except i do not think anyone ELSE wants that so i will spare you all. let’s just say we mounted a surprisingly fierce defense in this battle of attrition. but that’s all we were doing, just defending against the onslaught. then washington sundar came out and hit this beautiful, arcing six. it was a mega shot, a bolt of lightning in this match. and as i watched it i was like “they’ve just sold me the dream of winning this match. every one of us is hoping again.” the momentum of the match shifted, and then they fucking won. and with that win, we clinched the series, and took the trophy home again.

every weekend that i think is hopeless, at some point charles sells me the dream. more often than not this season it doesn’t pan out but- that’s the nature of the game. if the thing that sells HIM on the dream is ferrari, then i will continue being too broke to afford ferrari charles merch and wearing a random red shirt every race weekend.

oath post captured my fascination. someone who cannot break their oath, someone who will not break their oath come what may. someone who may “want” to but never truly wants to. what is a cage if not a home i can call my own? what is a leash if not a guidewire, a north star straight to the ones i love?

something i love about charles is that he goes through difficulties and he goes through horrible races and has horrible days with ferrari and never does he allow it to seem like a burden. it is always, always a privilege to him. that is what it means to keep your oath. that is what it means for your dream to be bigger than yourself.

i’m hopping on the charlando wagon if only because it seems wrong that they should be pitted against each other in this war for carlos’s affection when carlos is objectively Not That Cool and they should just make out instead

no one has ever talked about derry girls nearly as much as they should have. this tv show is honestly one of the most consummate perfect shows to ever exist. not only is it witty and sharply written, genuinely extremely funny, it also has such an important central point tying through every season. it didn't extend on for too long or get cancelled early. it's perfect. it was made exactly as intended.

the episode that really sold me the first time that i watched the show all the way through was S3 E6, which is the last of the 'true episodes' of the show in my opinion (E7 is kind of an epilogue) and it encapsulates the essence of the show so well. light and dark coexist. we live against the backdrop of harsh times. horrible, horrible things happen – but take my hand. you have me. we have each other.

and to go from there to the epilogue, to see how life can and will get better beyond the horrors. beyond the unprecedented times and the unfathomable things. and when it's better, we will still (always) have each other.
