did i ever tell you guys my viktor hasn’t fucked. he’s not ace or even particularly sex repulsed he’s just never been close enough to someone to want to. and then after a point he starts feeling like he’s too old to try (he is wrong about this. being like 25 and not having fucked is NORMAL, VIKTOR) and also he has other things to focus on. like science.

not to mention the general awkwardness of having never been in a relationship (probably?) and also being disabled in a way that makes sex a little more complicated to navigate.

all of which is to say: yes he SHOULD fuck and yes he WILL be snarky and aloof and shy about never having done it before. however that will not manifest as him being a blushing twink. it will manifest in him being hyper determined to be Good At Sex and overthinking and assuming he has to be in control of every single interaction to the point where he can’t actually relax and enjoy himself. in this essay I—

the herald watches astarion with the same blankly compassionate and tired gaze he favours everyone with, now. whatever they had been to one another before—if anything at all—there is so little indication of it in the way viktor conducts himself now. he moves as if guided by an unseen hand. he speaks as though every word is fed to him by another.

“if you could be kind, strong, and safe from all harm?”

i can give you that lies unspoken between them. the herald does not press him. if astarion is to join the collective, it will be of his own will or not at all.

fun fact: although viktor doesn’t generally initiate touch with anyone and usually avoids receiving it, he does like having his hair petted and his hands massaged. his scalp is one of the few places on his body that doesn’t hurt at all, and his hands are just generally sensitive (and overworked; it feels nice to have them squished).

as an aside, i feel like it would be easy to mistakenly write viktor as having always been mechanical and detached: the aloof, flat archetype of a disabled scientist in contrast to jayce’s friendly warmth. but i feel like that’s not supported by canon and it would take away from the horror of his transformation: viktor is warm! at least around those he loves (which is really only rio and jayce as far as were shown onscreen) he is warm, affectionate (not necessarily tactile, but not repulsed by it, and shows devotion in words and deeds openly) and deeply concerned with the welfare of others.

he works relentlessly, yes, has a drive to succeed and a tireless ambition, and we know that when he gets really focused on a project he does become closed-off from others/the world around him (such as never noticing sky until he got her killed), but all of this is alongside the rest of his characterisation. he makes jokes, is on good terms with people like heimerdinger, cares about people. we do see him being snappish and closed-off around politicians (especially when he feels they’re interfering with The Dream) which i think is interesting but not reflective of the way he is around people as a whole.

anyway that’s why it’s so horrifying when he becomes the herald. all of his warmth and emotion are gone. he’s not himself at all.

Moving day is tomorrow, thank god. We likely won’t have internet at home until the 7th, so I’ll be mobile until then, but I doubt it’ll change my activity levels that much given that I haven’t been around over the past week either. Still though; two bedrooms! A real kitchen! Couches! Space!!!

He shies, but only slightly: with the work he’s doing, he can’t afford to move too much or too quickly. Jinx likely knows this, just as she likely knows the entire project might be damaged if they jostle him too hard and his hands slip.

“Thank you,” says Viktor dryly. He doesn’t bother fixing his hair. His hands are occupied with the delicate wiring of a prosthetic eye. If he asks her not to do that again, they will, so he doesn’t bother with that either. “Actually, it’s good you’re here. I want your input on this. Not,” he adds quickly, before she can suggest painting the iris in rainbow shades, “the external design. This here, where it will connect to the optic nerve - would you take a look?”

He has been convinced for some time now that Jinx’s talents could be used for more than just bombs and weapons. Perhaps it would do them good to make something that causes no harm to anyone—something that helps rather than hinders.

having a lot of thoughts about Viktor being largely touch-averse due to chronic pain but still wanting to touch Jayce. and Jayce being kind of naturally physically affectionate in a casual way, so when they’re working together he’s often touching Viktor’s shoulder or standing close to him, whereas Viktor generally keeps a natural distance out of habit. and Viktor occasionally slaps him away if he’s moody or just overstimulated from pain but thankfully Jayce doesn’t really make much of it, and Viktor is always quietly glad when Jayce is just as touchy with him on another day.

usually when I write touch dynamics with characters, it tends to be more “touch averse one doesn’t Want to be touched ever, touch starved one is super touchy and wants to touch them so bad and is always pining and overthinking it”. but this is more like… Jayce is neutral on it! it’s just something that comes naturally to him and he doesn’t overthink it, even when rejected briefly. Viktor would be neutral if it weren’t for the pain and sensory issues, but he DOES overthink it despite never being the one to initiate touch.

he’s not touch starved, he just wants to touch Jayce specifically - to put a hand on his shoulder, to lean close, to bump elbows playfully like Jayce does with him. but it’s just not easy for him the way it is for Jayce, not to mention the potential to be genuinely hurt if someone touches him the wrong way.

which makes it all the more tragic when he emerges from the hex goop, Jayce hugs him, and he feels absolutely nothing about it.
