Review #28: The Path Of Totality (In Het Spoor Van De Eclips) by Bronagh Curran
Tumblr media
pages: 255
back cover:  August 21st 2017. The first Total Solar Eclipse in the US for 35 years. And at a time when
night is day and day is night, anyone's life can be turned upside down. Even if you're Nat Dobbs. Nat's the bullied kid. The kid with the stammer and skinny limbs. The kid who weighs 125 pounds dripping wet and never quite looks you in the eye. Maybe if he did, he'd finally make a friend. The last time he tried to fit in he ended up with this pants around his ankles...on state TV.
But Milo Quincy doesn't see Nat the way the others do, the way his father Gunther does.
Sure, he may be a 65 year old recluse who punched Nat in the face, he may even be as dangerous as the rest of the town says he is. But he's listening - and for Nat, that's enough for now. When the multi colored and multi coveted Celeste Woodston gets thrown onto their path, Nat and Quincy find themselves on a road trip - across four states - in a '67 Mustang to witness the eclipse from the optimum point - The Path of Totality.
And maybe in this moment of ultimate darkness, the unlikely friends will finally see the world more clearly - or at least how they'd like it to be.
review: Because of what the back cover told me I had a reasonably high expectation of this book. That's why it was a bit disappointing to notice that not much happened in the first half and I considered laying down the book without finishing the book (something I never actually do). But after 2 days I picked it up again and as a miracle one beautiful thing after another happened. THIS was what I expected. Ofcourse it is understandable that the writer needs a run-up to introduce the characters at the beginning of the story, but if the book contains only 250 pages in total, it is rather strange to use half of them for an intro.
As I said, the second part of the book really met my expectations. I laughed and cried, it got very tense and that’s what I enjoyed. I am very pleased that I have finished the book and would still like to read another book from the same author, but do not think I could start a third copy if the second book is - just like this one - half a introduction.

Review #27: Gravity (Zwaartekracht) by Milou van der Horst
Tumblr media
pages: 237
back cover: When Femke gets discharged from the anorexia clinic, the 'battle' only really begins now. Going to highschool, learning to make contact with people her age and the ongoing fight against the enemy: eating, weighing, losing weight, gaining and the fear that comes with it. Fortunately Femke gets all the support from her parents and her sister Nienke. When Femke goes on a trip at the end of her first year, she notices and feels that she can do a lot and that others appreciate her because of who she is.
review: This book is just like the first book a must! Milou shows you how difficult it is to recover from an eating disorder. I've tears in my eyes a few times during this book, especially at the end. You can tell from everything that Milou knows what she is talking about. The story just gets a little monotonous, therefore I gave one less star.

Review #26: My Sweet Enemy (Mijn Allerliefste Vijand) by Milou van der Horst
Tumblr media
pages: 135
back cover: Femke wants to be skinny. Perhaps then Lotte would like to become friends with her again. But it gets out of hand. Femke 2 - her other I - gets more and more power. She can no longer stop losing weight and gets admitted to a hospital. But even there she does not give up. Because how do you find the strength to fight with an enemy who is also your best friend?
review: This was Milou van der Horst’s very first book. She wrote it when she was only 16 years old and first recovered from her eating disorder.
The book is very touching and gives you a perfect insight into the life of a teenager with an eating disorder. The book contains only 135 pages, but we get both a clear picture of what life is like for the main character Femke and how her environment reacts and deals with this eating disorder. Because you never have a mental disorder alone. You may as well try to hide it from the world, it will always have an influence on the people around you and the people who are closest to you.
A simple written but very moving book. Ideal for teenagers or for people who do not know how to talk about the topic with a teenager / young person and want to learn more about it.

Review #25: Gezien De Feiten by Griet op de Beeck
Tumblr media
pages: 94
book cover: The insight was fresh, it still evaporated. Olivia straightened her black dress and looked at her daughter. The eyes swollen, the nose red around the wings of all that rubbing with paper tissues, a lick of missed snot shiny on her upper lip. Roos had a hard time, Olivia wish she could do something. Rose grabbed her arm, caught her, and carried her through the aisle. The coffin disappeared into the hearse, and they remained in the draughty hall of the church. Olivia had never been so happy that people can not read each other's thoughts.
review: This is the second book I read from Griet Op De Beeck. Her first book (Many Heavens above the seventh) I read as the first book in this challenge and it became one of my most annotated books that I have. The expectations were roughly the same with this book and it was a very nice story. The reason that I have only given a rating of 2 stars is mainly because of the daughter's role. That really spoils everything and gave nothing of satisfaction throughout the story. I understand that the character had to be brought out clearly, but it was too dominant, so that the end came very brutally and did not come out to its fullest.

Review #24: Verloren by Milou van der Horst
Tumblr media
pagina’s: 201
back cover: When Demi hears that her best friend Lieke has disappeared without a trace, her thoughts are running wild. Panic, sadness and powerlessness take possession of her, because Demi knows that Lieke has sometimes thought of suicide. Lately it did not go well with her anyway. Would she really ...?
review: I read Verloren (Lost) for the first time when it was only recently released and I was in the middle of a difficult period. The main reason I wanted to read this book at the time was because I was just diagnosed with Borderline and I wanted to learn more about it. The story was therefore super recognizable and I had to cry several times.
This was the first time that it felt like someone knew perfectly what I was going through. Because I was in the role of the main character (Lieke), I imagined that my best friend was in the role of Demi. This gave me more understanding for what she was experiencing because she was so close to me and saw everything that I was going through.
We are now 6 years further and by coincidence I saw this book on the bookfair in Ghent. I remembered how beautiful I thought the book was and decided to take it home right away. It certainly made me realize how much I grew as a person and how grateful I am to be able to lead this life.
I therefore recommend anyone who is interested in this subject or who knows someone with this diagnosis to read the book. It reads very smoothly but still brings a lot of information at the same time. Please read the trigger warnings first!

Review #23: Breuklijn bij Ludo Enckels (Dutch)
Tumblr media
pagina’s: 176

Review #22: If You Find Me (Als Je Mij Vindt) by Emily Murdoch
Tumblr media
pages: 240
back cover:  A broken-down camper hidden deep in a national forest is the only home fifteen year-old Carey can remember. The trees keep guard over her threadbare existence, with the one bright spot being Carey's younger sister, Jenessa, who depends on Carey for her very survival. All they have is each other, as their mentally ill mother comes and goes with greater frequency. Until that one fateful day their mother disappears for good, and two strangers arrive. Suddenly, the girls are taken from the woods and thrust into a bright and perplexing new world of high school, clothes and boys. Now, Carey must face the truth of why her mother abducted her ten years ago, while haunted by a past that won't let her go…a dark past that hides many a secret, including the reason Jenessa hasn't spoken a word in over a year. Carey knows she must keep her sister close, and her secrets even closer, or risk watching her new life come crashing down.
review: I read this book years ago for the first time and I loved it. Reading it for the second time didn’t change a thing about that.
This book is dark, emotional, funny, sad, twisted, romantic,... everything in one. A story which dragged my heart along the ground without once feeling cliche or overdone.  If You Find Me is a wonderfully inspiring story that brings us past the unimaginable horror of inhibits and makes it about hope instead. It really makes you think about how good we have it in our own lives and how ‘spoiled’ we actually are.
Will absolutely recommend this book to anyone 15years and older!!
I just want to make sure to tell you that there are a lot of triggers in this book, so I will list them down below.
Trigger warning: sexual abuse, rape, abandonment, abusive relationships, drug abuse, alcoholism, animal death, murder, child abuse, death, domestic violence, gun use, incest, kidnapping, mental illness (bipolar dissorder)
