Feel a bit silly asking this, but I feel weirdly seen by your blog. I'm not academically gifted, I have really strong ADHD (and some other things) which causes me to forget most of what I read, but I love the study of literature and am happiest writing. I can't afford college at this time, and worry that once I'm able to afford it, there will be no point in pursuing academics because I've struggled so much in the past.

What is your relationship to studying, and can you or any peers relate to what I've said? I love learning more than anything but my brain feels incompatible with it.

Hello there, dear anon. I hear what you’re saying, and I am curious to see if I can help in any way. To be honest, I don’t think anyone needs a uni level education to study, read, and enjoy literature. Neither do they need one to write! If you have the time, you can watch free videos about literature and how to study it deeper! Otherwise, the best way to become a better reader is to do just that: read. :) I have read so many books at this point that I can interconnect and juxtapose so many books to each other, therefore exploring themes, intentions, writer styles, and interpretations.

There is always purpose in academia. I think people these days worry that academia (especially concerning literature) is dwindling. Although that may feel true, I do not think that is the case. Readers fade and surge over the reads. I am sure past scholars used to think that no one would read in the future, and we think that about our future too. But something I have been thinking about a lot recently is people and their passions and hobbies. I think it is so beautifully odd that people feel drawn to certain things. For example, the other day I saw a man talking about how he loved to play the organ as a child, and now plays the organ professionally! Isn’t it so wonderfully odd that someone adores this old, complicated instrument? In the same way, I absolutely adore classical poems, which is odd to explain to the everyday person. In the same way, there will always be readers. There will always be writers. There will always be art, and books, and poems, because we are human. And humans are creatures overflowing with creativity—it’s in our bones. In that way, the study of academia, books, and general literature may fade and surge, but more humans will be born, and they will be drawn to books in the same way that we are drawn to them now. I think this is inevitable, and it gives me hope as a writer, a scholar, and a poet.

You will struggle at points during uni, or in life in general. But that shouldn’t deter you from learning and seeking knowledge. There’s nothing wrong with going slow and learning through failure. The important thing is your ambition and your passion. Think of it like a pet who you love. You may get upset at the pet when they tear up your favorite socks, but you still love it. For me, I love literature and learning so much that I can’t hate it for long. I read, study, and write because I have to. It is not a want. It is a need. I think that is how you know you’re meant for something.

I do not think you are incompatible with learning. I think a main flaw in the education system is how it only really teaches in one way, to one set of people. So the people that don’t fit into this group are made to feel excluded, or even unable of learning. But that is ridiculously far from the case. Everyone learns differently. Some people are more visual learners, others are oral learners. My sister can memorize a script in no time, meanwhile can’t understand a poem to save her life. Meanwhile it takes me forever to memorize anything, but I adore dissecting a poem down to its core. You have to be patient with yourself. If you aren’t understanding something, it is probably the form by which the material is being presented to you that is making things complicated. Test things out—watch videos, read summaries, talk to your friends about the material. Find a way to learn that works for you. No one is the same as anyone else, and I think that is wonderful. It’s the argument about asking a fish to climb a tree—it cannot do that. But it can swim, and swim outstandingly.

If you love to learn, then learn! Just learn in a way that is compatible with you. :) Try not to get discouraged when things don’t start working out immediately. Take time, have grace with yourself, and your ambition will always bring you back. I hope this helps some, anon. 🖤🦇
