Protohouse

The Protohouse project was developed in the Architectural Association School's Design Research Lab within the 'behavioral matter' studio of Robert Stuart-Smith. The Protohouse investigated the architectural potential of the latest Selective Laser Sintering technologies, testing the boundaries of large scale 3D printing by designing with computer algorithms that micro-organize the printed material itself. Research prototypes were generously supported by Materialise, with additional support from VoxelJet, and Sirris.

SoftKill ProtoHouse at the 3D Printshow, London 2012
19th-21st October 2012, The Brewery, London, EC1Y 4SD
2012 has seen 3D printing emerge into the wider public consciousness, growing from a niche technology to a gamechanger, a technology that is set to redefine how we produce, consume and live our lives in the future. The 3D Printshow represents a future-facing approach to creating live events. Combining the public's desire for future tech, gadgets and science with interactivity and education, underpinned with a love for aesthetics, art and design, it promises to be a fully immersive experience for anyone curious about the future of manufacturing, creativity and personalised products. Presenting interactive experiences, seminars and workshops with some of the brightest minds in the 3D printing world; the show will look at all parts of the process, from conception to design, software to hardware, materials to finished products. The show aims to captivate and entertain, but also to deepen the public understanding of what 3D printing has made achievable in the world of bespoke production. Featuring exhibition pieces across a variety of disciplines; from established icons to this year's up and coming names. The show will feature 3D printing in the realms of fashion, architecture, art, music, medicine, design, software, travel, furniture and home life.

Matter聽is聽redistributed along principal lines of stress while聽structural agency is embedded聽through a procedural based logic of connections. What emerges is a thick layer of a聽porous, fibrous construct.聽 Dissolving geometry through an abstract material articulation, resulting in a non-geometrical structure that is聽materially efficient, with a high degree of transparency and stiffness, while being extremely articulated, tactile, and ornate.

SoftKill algorithm combines the empirical and real-time character of a particle-spring setup with the computational model of finite element analysis found in typical Topological Optimization methods. Particles in a volume are redistributed(either added or removed) through calculating spring force on particles. Subsequently a non-mathematical method is used to trace directionality and structural flow through the structure. Agents are launched in a tension and compression vector field and seek their path between the origins of the applied forces, displaying direction in the structure, forming lines of stress.

Embedding agency within a system of matter redistribution along principal lines of stress results in highly optimised and refined fibrous geometry. Work on embedding division strategies within a process of topological formation.
