I just think that they had such a missed opportunity with how they could have approached the end of this season so here's how I wish they'd done it
push the lab storyline to 8x17 and 8x18 (I know but just go on a journey with me here)
this possibility gives multiple storylines more time to breathe
maddie's post-kidnapping arc could have been drawn out beyond just a single episode
we could have seen more of eddie and chris in texas with some much needed discussions about shannon and kim
we could have gone without bringing fucking gerrard back in a pathetic attempt at redemption that no one is buying
we could have seen more of buck and ravi building a good foundation as partners
so that brings us to the lab arc
everything pretty much goes the same except we finally get the one thing that 911 has yet to do – a cliffhanger season finale
bobby revealing that he's sick is the last scene of the season, whether he reveals it to buck or athena or both
that leaves plenty of open-ended storylines leading into s9 that they can use to build excitement and audience engagement with promo and interviews leading up to the season
will bobby survive? will eddie come back to los angeles? will chim have any lasting effects of the virus? will some or all of them possibly face charges for defying the government/military?
the hiatus gives tim and co the chance to gauge reaction to bobby possibly dying instead of fully committing to what seemed to be a very impulsive decision on tim's part
if they really want to explore a 118 without bobby, we can come back in 9x01 with bobby in a coma or they can still choose to be ridiculous and kill him off but at least it might be thought out a little better (no I don't know how he medically ends up in a coma but I know that they created a super virus so I'm sure they could figure out a way to put him in a coma about it)
eddie obviously comes back to los angeles with christopher's full participation in that conversation and we get actual roommates!buddie because people playing hot potato with housing in this economy is so ridiculous
but if bobby is out of the picture (coma or dead) that leaves the captain position open and honestly I've been a captain hen supporter but I don't hate captain chim because he's grown so much since the last time he was in that position
then they need a new paramedic and with buck and ravi doing well as partners, that leaves a perfect opportunity for eddie to become a paramedic
if bobby is in a coma, they can literally bring him back whenever they want and it's not a closed door that may well screw over the show entirely
and that can introduce such a delicious storyline if chim is thriving as captain and bobby wakes up from comaland in the way that all tv characters magically do without any physical or neurological deficits
it brings about a wonderful arc of should bobby return to the 118 or should he retire?
oh hello I just introduced multiple VERY INTERESTING storylines for season 9
I conclude this by saying fuck you tim for all of your many sins

would love it if they could hire a writer that actually gives a damn about giving eddie diaz a real storyline that doesn't recycle what we've already seen over and over again

I feel kinda the same way I did about the s6 finale if I'm being honest
there were a few moments that made me remember why I've loved this show for so long but as a whole the episode was incredibly underwhelming and did very little to conclude a season full of storylines that wrapped too quickly or just didn't go anywhere
