My original plan before writing an article about Dr. Ontok was to interview him personally. Although we were in contact through Instagram in the past months, he was told by his superior to limit his interviews to protect any classified information from being posted online. Before I’m allowed to do an interview of him, I still have to write a letter and send it to their main headquarters. I thought it was a long process so I said to myself, “Why not ask his closest batchmates in medschool, instead?” And so I did.
While finding oneself operating at the emergency room would be considered a bad dream for most medical students, doing the exact same thing in the battlefield could only be called a total nightmare.
However, this seemingly isn’t the case for Dr. Abdul-Azis Ontok, who couldn’t care less about machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and air strikes while he tries to keep injured soldiers alive.
The 32 year-old, Philippine Army resident neurosurgeon from Zamboanga, who happens to be a Mindanao State University College of Medicine alumnus and the valedictorian of his Class 2009, became an instant hit on social media after he posted a photo of him last July 15, 2017 while he was on duty in the embattled city of Marawi. The photo bears the message: “From Marawi with Love“ — a move that has since then touched numerous hearts.

I am not a photographer. I am just a military surgeon who takes photos spontaneously, point & shoot, just to have something for my Instagram… @tataynitala, @pearly_sherl, @malelico, and @theena.patelo encouraged me to submit my shots to a photo contest and this won 2nd place. ✌️😁📸

Much has been written online regarding the handsome and well-built doctor, but what do his closest batchmates have to say about him?
Dr. Rogene Esparcia, one of his best buds in medschool, revealed a handful of information that would demonstrate just how different Dr. Ontok was few years ago.
“First day of class, I already hated him for being stubborn. He looked conceited and he was really intimidating. He wasn’t a hunk back then but rather a bit chubby with a beer belly. He was the campus crush and he really enjoyed the attention”, Dr. Esparcia said. “He was the youngest in our batch that’s why most of the time he did many childish acts”.
Despite the initial evaluations of him, Dr. Ontok easily recovered from those bad first impressions. “He loves to hug everyone and he always wears his big smile, which brightens everyone’s day. To sum it all up, he’s a very brilliant student with a cheerful heart”.
One thing people will be envious about Dr. Ontok is the fact that whilst he aced every exam he took, he really lived his medschool life. At one point, the viral doctor was hooked to online gaming. “Abs, as we fondly call him, was not the typical nerdy, intelligent valedictorian that you would expect. If there’s no correlates class, we used to go to Klasmeyts Internet Café (in Iligan) to play DOTA. His favorite hero at that time was Sandking“.
Dr. Ontok is also a certified musicophile. Dr. Esparcia shared, “He’s not a typical alpha male who listens exclusively to rock music. Believe it or not, Pussycat Dolls was on his playlist”.
Surely, he wouldn’t be the valedictorian for no reasons. Asked about Dr. Ontok’s academic performance before, Dr. Esparcia replied, “He sometimes didn’t sleep at all, especially when an exam was coming up. He knew how to balance and manage his time well that’s why he was consistently ranked no. 1 in most of our modular exams.”
As a batchmate and comrade in the army, Dr. Jan Miranda recalled, “We were the only ones from MSUCOM who would go into bars to have a drink completely dressed in uniforms with our nameplates on.” Though such behavior may seem inappropriate, it was during those drinking sessions when they laid out their plans together post-medschool. “Actually, it was I who gave him the idea of becoming a military doctor one day, hence both of us ended up in the military. He went to Neurosurgery while I decided on Orthopaedics.”

One would wonder what motivates Dr. Ontok and Dr. Miranda to continue saving lives in such adverse conditions. Dr. Miranda’s answer made sense. “Your profession as a doctor is already considered a service. But being a military doctor gives a higher level of service to our country. Why stay in the military and get a salary of only ₱45,000 when you can earn more in private hospitals? One operation there is double, even triple our pay. However, we will still opt to stay as a sacrifice and service to the people. How much more if you put your life in danger at ground zero within 1 km radius from the enemies? That’s why I salute him.”
Both of Dr. Ontok’s best friends joked about his celebrity status. When Dr. Ontok was invited by ABS-CBN Lifestyle for a photo op, Dr. Esparcia texted him, “Wow! You’re at par with Marlon Stockinger!”. Dr. Miranda teased him, “Parekoy, be back in one piece because if not, it might be the end of your celebrity career”, to which Dr. Ontok replied, “G*go!“.
But kidding aside, Dr. Miranda aims to convince more graduates from MSUCOM to serve the people.
Dr. Ontok may be popular on social media for his looks, but he makes use of that status in all the best ways possible. Through Instagram, he displays optimism and spreads awareness of the condition of our armed forces in the hopes of gaining renewed appreciation that they deserve and to encourage people to give back.
Doctors in an active field area have a tough job and it takes a toll on these people. As a senior clerk, I can never imagine how it feels to be in his boots, waving at people going to the front line only to receive them later on stretchers.

Hi,
Been writing articles on the web for quite a length of time now, but I've never written any serious blog that people will find worth reading. So here's my first! I just want to hear your thoughts about my blog entitled, "Why am I Extremely Fond of Redheads?". If you see anything that is not accurate, I'll be very happy to review it and make some necessary changes. Thanks! I really admire redheads btw!

Real life Star Wars. Laser Towards Milky Ways Center. The color of the laser is precisely tuned to energize a layer of sodium atoms found in one of the upper layers of the atmosphere — one can recognize the familiar color of sodium street lamps in the color of the laser.
This layer of sodium atoms is thought to be a leftover from meteorites entering the Earth’s atmosphere. When excited by the light from the laser, the atoms start glowing, forming a small bright spot that can be used as an artificial reference star for the adaptive optics. Using this technique, astronomers can obtain sharper observations. For example, when looking towards the center of our Milky Way, researchers can better monitor the galactic core, where a central super massive black hole, surrounded by closely orbiting stars, is swallowing gas and dust.
Taken with a wide angle lens, this photo covers about 180° of the sky.

I want you all to look very closely at this woman. Her name is Lizzie Velasquez, 21 years of age, and weighs about 55lbs(or 25.4ish kg), has nearly 0% body fat, and isn’t anorexic.
She suffers from a rare and undiagnosed syndrome that prevents her from putting on weight, and has to eat every 15 minutes in order to stay alive. She has about 60 small meals a day, consisting of between 5,000 and 8,000 calories. She was born four weeks prematurely and doctors found there was minimal amniotic fluid protecting her in the womb. Genetic experts could not diagnose her illness, and her case fascinated doctors all over the world. Now she is part of a study run by Professor Abhimanyu Garg in Dallas. Garg believes Velasquez may have Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome which causes accelerated ageing, and fat loss from the face and body.
Lizzie has said, “I weigh myself regularly and if I gain even one pound I get really excited. I eat every 15-20 minutes to keep my energy levels up. I eat small portions of crisps, sweets, chocolate, pizza, chicken, cake, doughnuts, ice cream, noodles and pop tarts all day long, so I get pretty upset when people accuse me of being anorexic. When I meet new people I have to say: ‘Hi, I’m Lizzie and I have this rare syndrome, I am NOT anorexic’.”
Please don’t feel like she’s lucky that she is this way.
I think we need to take time out of our days to be happy for what we have, cherish our bodies, and be thankful for them. I’m not gonna throw out some form of a guilt trip on this saying you should be thankful for what you have because you could be this and so on;
What I do want all of you to come from this is that if this woman can smile constantly with a body like her own, we should be able to do that too, regardless of everything.
I’m not Lizzie, and I don’t know how you could get in contact with her, but I am here to help any of you in any form, regardless of if you’re a lady or a gentleman.
Smile today; you’re wonderful. <3
BE BRAVE! JOIN THE REVOLUTION!
