Singer, poet, guitarist, Los Angeles native, Dez Hope has been performing his unique brand of soulfully charged Acoustic-Hip Hop for over a decade. Dez is often referred to as the “Chicano Bob Dylan with Beats” and refers to his own music as "Folk-Hop". Through years of inspiring and exuberant performances, he has become one of the more revered and respected independent solo artists in Los Angeles. This is my aunt Irene aka Aunt Puggy. Growing up, she had a pug nose and got that nickname. Not a flattering nickname to say the least but that's what we call her. My aunt didn't have an easy childhood. She was the third of seven Hernandez siblings, my mom was the fourth. She got picked on a lot and my mom defended her. She's lived in a nursing home for several years and I think they had her heavily medicated because, every time I visited her, she barely spoke. I felt deep pangs of guilt cuz it felt like she was slowly dying in there and I wasn't sure what I could do. This year, however, I showed up to pick her up and take her to my sister's for Christmas and she exclaimed, "My Joey!" And she's lost over 100lbs. She's more energetic than ever and I'm gonna do my best to get her out of that nursing home as much as I can while I'm home. I know my mom is looking down, reminding me how important it is to hold on to our loved ones and appreciate them while they're still with us. #MerryChristmas #HappyHolidays (at Jefferson Park)

The times I crashed today: -When I saw that my friend was ahead of me and I was worried that I wasn't going down the hill fast enough. I crashed. -When I panicked and skipped a step instead of staying calm and letting the board move naturally. I crashed. The times I flew today: -When I put on my "Snowboarding" mix - Foals, The 1975, Tribe Called Quest, Van Halen, etc and enjoyed the ride. -When I dug in and committed to the turn. -When I reminded myself that I knew what I was doing. The main lesson I remembered: -Look in the direction you want to go and your board will naturally go in that direction. So don't look down. Always look up! The Say Word Slam Team was in the house, Def Sound was our guest DJ and a perfect mix of new students and regulars! So gifted. I'm very proud of the safe and supportive space that we've created! Oh, the fun that was had last night at Mortified Portland! For those unfamiliar, Mortified is an awesome live show/TV series where people share from their childhood diaries, journals, their songs, poetry etc without a single word being changed. It was me and these five women and every single one of them were brave and awesome last night! What a perfect time to attend a show that reminds you that all pain is temporary!
