At which extent a new band/artist can generate revenue from this massive online music publishing machine?
Technological advancement in the music business has enforced on artists pure entrepreneurship skills need. Which connote that the DIY (Do It Yourself) model is at an expansive cost and high risk for newcomer artists.Though it might not account for cash money.
On the 1st of August 2017, Tombra Robert Group was releasing his first Extended Play (EP) record entitled Color of Nature. This EP of three tracks was digitally launched through various web platform from social media to others web music streaming services available online today.
This is a clear instance of a shift from the physical configuration to the digital format in the music industry. While years back, it could have been for some thousands of dollar bills, the Tombra Robert Group single-handed manages to make it on a DIY model with an almost free cash investment.
Let me put it simply here: Either you paid it in cash or not, your level of investment will ultimately determine the outcome.
But what does it take for a band/artist to run a music career in the digital age on DIY model?
#1- Music business minimum literacy
Everything answers to understanding. The more illiterate new artists are about the minimum of this industry (both music education and business), the less revenue they will attract. Digital free online music publishing services are not created for an escape.
The Tombra Robert Group is a band of jazz young talented musicians freshly graduated from the popular Music Society of Nigeria School, known as Muson School of music.
The MUSON School of Music was established in 1989 to offer music training and diploma courses for children and adults interested in learning how to sing or play any musical instrument. Thousands of students have attended the school since 1989.
#2- Not fame first, but a clear vision/calling first
Back to his hometown on November 2016, after the London Jazz Festival, one of the world’s largest and most ambitious festival, Robert invited three of his schoolmate around a coffee table on the campus to pitch to them his vision.Which gave birth to the Tombra Robert Group.
“Music came to me in term of sound. The way people listen to music is different from mine. I’m always looking for something rare in the sound,…”Robert said.
Over a century, the music industry has successfully produced amazing celebrities all around the world with strong and lasting global influence. They are incredibly talented and passionate artists. In fact hard-working even. But all of those celebrities was made by a vision bearer. Which was in most case other entrepreneurs (Maybe a talent agent, a publishing company, record label…) bearing a clear vision to serve a specific need for a specific market.
Where there is no vision, talent will surely perish. (Proverbs 29:18)
On a DIY model, band/artist need first to have a clear vision and carry it out by themselves. It’s all about service. Servicing life with sound and melody.
Every success in business/startup relies much on the vision bearer/founders’ abilities.
Tombrapade Robert is the drummer, lead of the band, manager bearing the vision and named the group after his name. This is exactly what a startup would call CEO and Founder.
#3 — Value delivery
Some years ago, while the physical configuration was still dominant in the music industry, only one good song can carry 5 to 10 less significant songs along to the market. We called it an album.Today, it is the single life which means for artists live in single sales. However, you generate more money from live performance. People might like your music but they will only pay for your value per single. This value can effectively be delivered on live performance.
While chatting with Robert Tombrapade, he said “I’m hoping to record again. But for now, we are backing into a tour for this first EP.”
DIY model is demanding. Will you also be your own booking or road show agent? Maybe. But there are also booking service available online.
For a new band/artist, the extent of revenue you can generate from this online massive music publishing machine is a function of the leverage you have built offline.

If you do like Asa the musician, you will definitely prefer Bumzy music
Well, I’m not going to talk about Asa, you already know her. Asa is just the only Nigeria voice from Paris, France. She is just la star. But one thing you might like to know about her is her commitment. In 2015 while Asa was challenged to re-record the “Bed of Stone”, she has to drive 18 hours from Nashville to New York in search for inspiration. And she found it. Though she sounds simple in her melodies, she invests a lot of energy to get that out. “Simplicity is not at the beginning; it’s the result of a long process of perfection.” On the 12th of July 2017, Bumzy, a single woman from Nigeria was awarded the best contemporary singer 2017 by Muson School. When I approached her and asked her impressions, she answered “I really appreciate it because I deserve it.” It is like that I get to know Bumzy. Bumzy’s videos are going viral through her social media pages. Some weeks ago, she shared 3 videos on which she covered 3 popular Asa’s songs: Ife, Moving on, Eyo, Bamidele. Hundreds of views were recorded in few days. Bumzy discovered herself into music through Asa’s noiseless breaking-through career. These whole things started years back in the Western of Africa in Nigeria when Bumzy was 11 years old. Nigeria is the largest country in West-Africa, the most populous in Africa and surpassing U.S of America as world’s 3rd most populous country by 2050 according to The World Population Prospects 2017. Bumzy’s full name is Olubunmi Adewumi Felicia from a Yoruba family. Olubunmi joined the choir at Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, her church, first time at 12 years old. She was already at high school. In her whole Senior Secondary School, she was the only one to attend to the music classes and sat for the WAEC music exam. When she was to study music in 2010 at the University of Lagos, her dad was strictly opposed. She took days to convince her dad to give a try to music art. The only time sir. Adewumi, her dad, could agree was when she told the Asa story of success. “Asa is my role model,” she said. Sir Adewumi fell in love with Asa music, her moral, and the image she reflects outside which is very important for Yoruba culture. In 2014, Bumzy got graduated with a bachelor degree in music art. In 2015, she got admitted to Muson School of Music for the diploma course. Then she started a professional music career as a vocalist musician. The only thing that differentiates Bumzy is the focus and her commitment. She rehearses almost every day. In February 2017, she became a piano instructor at Jasmine house school of music. She purposes to do like Asa, a different music. She decided to do music therapy. Bumzy is a successful upcoming voice from Nigeria who believes that success is about impacting life. A good music has an order of values for Bumzy: 1-   The lyrics: This is the core content of a song. A good music starts with a good content. 2-    The voice: I prefer a cool and calm voice within the range of the contralto. 3-    The melody: This is the catchy part of the music. It takes a good voice to bring out the sweetness of a melody. Melodies attract. 4-    The beat: it’s the aliveness of the music. It could be groovy, sad or lively. I prefer moderate speed (Andante) 5-    The arrangement: this is the sync, the harmony between voices and melody. It adds color to the melody. “If you are talented and you are hiding it in disguise of being shy or humble, then you are selfish.” She ends with. Bumzy has featured five songs so far. You should look forward to her first single.

The birthday: That day Qadowsh music always happens
Did you ever find out why we are so immersed with music everywhere those days?
In our daily move, we are consciously or unconsciously connected to melody and sound all around. Music is everywhere. As music industry is growing fast and more demanding, musicians more like entrepreneurs are pushed to develop strong business capacity to stay stand in the game. For a female voice in music today, it seems more challenging to build a strong career without persistent dedication. But it’s worth to fight that fight. Here is ADERAYO ADEDURO, a young female Nigerian voice known as Qadowsh.
ADERAYO ADEDURO is a music addicted girl since day one when she was born in Nigeria.
Professionally into music for over 10 years today, Qadowsh music journey started from her primary school at Gobe state. She became school prefect in secondary school because she could sing better and easier than her mates. By the time she completed her secondary school, she traveled back from the north of the country Nigeria (West-Africa) to the south in Lagos state. ADERAYO ADEDURO then applied and got admitted to a voice training class at Vocal Plus Academy to improve her voice skill and music talent. This was 2004. Vocal Plus Academy was just one year old. The school started in 2003 on the mainland at Lagos. It was a modest neighborhood school of music with only one room. A family startup with the aim to train and raise voices for Nigeria music market. They featured basically gospel and contemporary music. When Qadowsh joined the school in 2004, she could not finish the curriculum before she volunteered to serve the school. She started by teaching and coaching junior students. There was a drive in her for which the school could not resist for long. Some months later, Vocal Plus Academy administration accepted Qadowsh on the board of lecturers. She was the youngest worker in the academy. She could also generate some side money to satisfy her wants. Till date, Qadowsh is still teaching with Vocal Plus Academy. At the end of her training courses at Vocal Plus Academy, ADERAYO ADEDURO enrolled at the University of Lagos for high level study in music. 5 years later, she was out with a Bachelor degree in Music. In 2012, she was still on the University of Lagos campus. On the 9th of August, it was her birthday. That day, Qadowsh music happens. She released her first recorded song entitled “Mojubare”. It came out that day to celebrate the goodness of God according to her. For which she was also privilege to tour on some local church stages with success. This first release stirs up her zeal to invest more in her music. Some month later, she releases another one and today she has five recorded tracks on the market. She started a diploma course at Muson School of Music at Lagos after she graduated from the University of Lagos. Along her tracks, Qadowsh mention her admission to Muson School of Music as a key step stone on her way to become the woman of her dream. But it was challenging at the beginning at Muson School of music. The demand on her to shift from her gospel and contemporary music background, to classical music and Jazz world. Though she has the gift, she has to put some extra effort to make it. And she did it. In 2015, at Foursquare Gospel Church, on the 9th of August, her birthday, it happens again. ADERAYO ADEDURO is now a single woman. Christian believer and vocalist musician. She conceived, organized, financed and held her first personal concert. For the first time I could notice a full responsible event coming from an upcoming female singer. This was a bootstrap for the growing career. The purpose was to make people worship God on her birthday. The concert was a self-made event which strengthens her entrepreneurial inheritance from the Nigeria lineage. Thus, in 2016, on her birthday again, the 2nd edition held at TAC AKOKA. This year 2017, the third edition is coming on the 9th of August, the birthday, with a lot of new added substances. “You get to see people come into the kingdom through your songs. I know a lot of people come through my recital. So the opportunities are huge.” And she goes on “I want to scale my music from just performing in church to others open platform. I’m happy when people can look at me and get inspired” Qadowsh music ministry is to worship and praise. She wants to have a Ph.D degree in music and own her school of music in Africa. For all of us, things happen every day. Some might pass while some stay stick forever. For Qadowsh, it always happens on her birthday.

MakeItWork: 17 years after and still on...
The discovery series are our weekly reach out to young talented underground artists on their way to success. We walk them along through community enlightens and exposure, marketing support, professional connection, mentoring and content(lyrics) empowering from the bottom to the top.
For long, we keep receiving different people from different background, differents cultures with diverse talent, diverse perspective with differents aims. However, I was hooked by the radical zeal of this particular professional musician I met some days ago. His name is John Paul Wayout.
For the first time, I was privileged to hang out with this so hidden man in his own self-made music recording studio.
There are 17 years ago, John Paul was called by music. “Music got into me, not I got into music,” he said. For 17 years, John Paul Wayout has written, sang and recorded over 20 songs. And still, the adventure was full of disappointment, financial breakdown and up, challenges and victories as well.
This could sound nice but how it could happen?
In the mid belt of Nigeria, Benue state (the 9th most populous state in Nigeria), traditional dances have won acclaim at national and international cultural festivals. The most popular of these dances include Ingyough, Ange, Swange and more.Â
John Paul was born in Benue state. His mother’s family lineage has for generations been distinguished for their natural dance and music gift. John Paul’s mom has spent her lifetime in traditional music and dance. She successfully made it in many Christian choirs in churches at Benue state. John inherited that gift from his mother at church.Â
In 1999, John Paul Wayout was still very young when he discovered his calling for music. He then took it seriously and desired to make it a profession. He so prioritized his passion for music, then separated himself from his family, carried himself away to join friends and engaged his new adventure on a single note. Therefore, no financial covering could not be expected from his parent side into his so-called rebellious-carried-away career.Â
John Paul Wayout was the only one and the first in his family to look up and far in the music industry. He wanted to make his music modern ways and at a global scale. He started up in Benue state. John survived with friends from place to place. A bird without wings. There were more opportunities at Lagos state. John flew down to Lagos with no contact but a strong want to succeed. This burning desire made room to his hunger. From friend to friends, John quickly got into Lagos large music business. He took his first job from a small record label to make his living. Three years later, he worked out from that job.Â
However, while working with that record label, he was privileged to meet many young artists coming up singers. One of John’s unforgettable opportunities was to meet the famous veteran Nigeria singer Zaaki Azzay. Azzay is a popular 90s rapper and UN ambassador. He was so exceptionally known for his trademark torchlight symbol. Azzay always carries along a torch-light at public events and on stage. For John Paul, Azzay is the all-time best rapper in Nigeria. “He gave me hope and encourages me. From there I started making my way in… Then I keep it up till date” John Paul said about his meeting with Zaaki Azzay.Â
Singer and vocalist, John Paul, have collaborated with many fellow singers and some are today popular in the global music scope. He found this music business really profitable. John was able to pattern his way of music product. He is still very careful to just appear on events. It so remains very difficult for John to meet someone who understands the kind of music he is into and packages it for a market.Â
For 12 years in this music business, John Paul has recorded and backed up over 20 tracks. For which none of them has ever been enlisted in any playlist either on a radio or a popular public playlist. It’s so sad!!! I was very concerned when I ask John “why so?” With energy, he returns to me with his loud voice: “I didn’t understand the call, and wasted my energy and time in circular music without success. Now I got to discover my feet in classical gospel music”. How?Â
In 2015, John Paul got a blessed contract to write, sing and record a full album for a local church. 6000 copies of this album for the first time sold in a few moments. Paul Wayout is actually recording a new full gospel album for very soon.

MakeItWork series: The untold story of Temidayo Balogun, saxophonist musician
He started playing music as a teenager at his dad's church while he was still at primary school.Â
Born in Nigeria, Temidayo Balogun got introduced into music through Akunba drum by his late father years back.
In 2008, his father's church has grown to a large assembly. Then they decided to buy a new keyboard for the choir. But, who's gonna play the keyboard? His dad decided to hire a professional musician to train the choir members to play that particular musical instrument.
Though Temidayo was the drummer at that time, he also expressed the interest in participating to that initiation class.
And appetite comes while eating. Temidayo got his vision for music on this occasion.
His family did not definitely agree with his choice for music, but his mum took the risk to send him to Peterking College of Music at Badagri in Lagos state; Far away from the home for 3 years. Temidayo went to study saxophone at Peterking college of music. He discovered the jazz music culture. He kept his dream alive and still on the go for deeper insight till date. While away, his dad left(departed to heaven). This could be very challenging and hard for the young growing Christian musician.
But with faith and hope in God, In 2015, after he graduated, he got admitted to Muson school of music at Lagos to continue his musical curriculum. Temidayo's vision is to reach out jazz music to people. Because he believes that there's a market for jazz music in Nigeria. “Jazz is all about culture. I'm working to bring Yoruba culture into jazz. There's an opportunity for jazz music in this country “ he said. Well, things are getting better in Nigeria these days. People are more open to a different kind of music.
He's planning a trip abroad in the next coming years to further study in music and projects roll out his first album soon.

To close a sale of 15000 CD on one event spot in 2016 as part-time singer, with the first album, this is a performance that trigger attention.

David Ola Samuel started music at 13 years old in his daddy's church in Nigeria. He recently moves into music business last year 2016 with his first album entitled “Joy for Praise”.

Node.js & Africa market: Extended conversation on @Sideway
“Faster code vs slower Internet: How useful could Node.js be for the African market in terms of performance? What does the African development market even look like?”
#Pliby: Â Â Hi everyone! Happy near 2017 and welcome.Â
#Conv: Â Happy new year to everyone
#Pliby: Â Thank you for your interest for this subject. I'm so sorry, we couldn't linked a video presentation to this conversation. However, I'll start by introducing first the African marketAfrica is a such a lovely place and very diversify. And the African tech market is very fragmented
#Pliby:  1- Start looking at it from the north, we definitely will notice an existing market in Egypt: the Cairo tech ecosystem. A very vibrant startup hub with 33,300,000 internet users, 37% internet penetration and 93,670,000 mobile phone users. It’s an internet economy very promising with a pool of young talented developers. Remember, it’s a country of 90 million populations.
2- Move on to the East of Africa, we have a really fascinating tech market. Today well known as Silicon Savannah. Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya has transformed into a technology epicenter. A fast growing startup scene; an ecosystem constantly reinventing their offering; with a wave of new young motivated entrepreneur emerging. Kenya has 26 tech hub and incubator, 31,985,048 internet users, 69.6% internet penetrations. In 2015, Kenya tech startup funding landscape was $47.4 million dollars.
Nairobi’s tech scene could be worth as much as $1 billion by 2019 according to Bloomberg report.
3- By the south of the continent, we have the South Africa market. It’s one of the most mature market in Africa being active in this tech industry over a decade right now. So we numbered 51 tech hub and incubators in South Africa, with 26,841,126 internet users, 49% internet penetration and their tech startup funding landscape in 2015 was $54.6 million dollars.
#Conv:Â And what's happening in the West?
#Pliby: 4-  In the West part of Africa, there is an outstanding dominion of Nigeria. It’s so obvious in number and his serious concern about profitability. So you could understand the wave of profitable service oriented tech companies emerging in. Nigeria has 92,699,924 internet users, 51,1% internet penetration, 167,371,945 (in 2014) mobile phone users, 23 tech hubs/incubators. Nigeria tech startup funding landscape in 2015 was $49.4 millions.
#Conv:Â Is there something unique about node that's different from other technologies when it comes to the African market?
#Pliby:Â Well, maybe not really. But there some plus for node.js technology when it come to the African market. If there's something remarquable about the internet in Africa, it's how slow it is from place to place. And still very expensive in some country. When you think of it, and you mind Africa market, Performance must be in the first place for your service; for Whatever it could worth.Something very fast, lightweight and efficient.
#Conv: Â Do more African startup use US or European hosting or are there local web hosting companies available? Is the landscape similar to the US where AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and a few other cloud providers dominate?
#Pliby: Â Almost all African startup use US or European hosting for their services. But the landscape are not really similar to the US.For some other reasons basically the cost.Africa has just some few dominant startup and a large number of small startup. So when it comes to hosting, most startup go for cheap hosting plan and easy to setup based on the developer competences.Developer community in Africa are growing via tech hubs and some open resources online. So most often, people wave for easy and fast solution than everything. In Africa, we have more php experienced developers than any other language. But the large number have at least a basic knowledge in javascript. Which is already a very good to start with some basics of Node.js
#Conv:Â Node is lightweight, can run on cheaper hardware than traditional tech such as C#, java, etc. Can this help in rural communities who generally have very limited internet access, if at all.
#Pliby: For there’s a wave of such growing USSD apps in many country in Africa today which serves all feature phone in rural community who do not even have internet access at all. In particularly Nigeria and Kenya: Banking services, mobile payment, gaming, education... All those apps rely on a web API which could be easily and effectively develop with Node.js. Fast delivery and Cheap.Â

The likes of discovery; Â The drive at Khulatech.
For long ago, so far in Benin republic in west Africa, it’s a common believe that a perforated water jug could still preserved his content only if fitted fingers are sticked through the holes. That just expresses Love which is where KHULATECH stand on.
It’s an amazing drive of technology and startup and idea blowing at Khulatech at Cotonou. An experience you couldn’t imagine unless you get in.Â
Located by the ocean coast at Cotonou, it’s a three floor lovely building wherein every need is intend to become a product. The likes of Discovery you might have to experience.
And getting through, Khulatech is launching soon a massive project of data collection all over the country. The project intend to design a complete API to expose those collected content to developers and startups in the hub for use.Â
We have a very interesting debate around the choice of technologies.  The project will definitely rely on Node.js and microservices. For it’s fast, reliable and scalable.
And by the way, a training is going to be hold in for developers within the hub on Javascript language, Node.js technology and the new full stack.
We are excited and appreciate. Thank Boris, thank Joane. Sing along with us the likes of discovery now.Â
